You can add a participating U.S. driver’s license or state ID from the Wallet app, but only if your issuing state or territory supports ID in Wallet and your iPhone meets Apple’s requirements. Check Apple’s current ID in Wallet list first, then scan your card and complete the identity checks. Your state’s issuing authority—not Apple—decides whether the request is approved.
Check whether your state supports ID in Apple Wallet
Apple’s digital-license feature is controlled by each issuing jurisdiction. It is not available nationwide, and appearing on an older list does not guarantee that a state still participates. Before opening Wallet, check Apple’s live ID in Wallet list.
At the time of writing, Apple lists these participating U.S. states and territory:

What state participation does—and does not—mean
Participation means the issuing authority has established an enrollment path that Wallet can use. It does not mean every resident is automatically eligible, every device qualifies, or every business accepts the resulting credential. A state can appear on Apple’s page while imposing a higher device or software minimum, and an individual request can still be delayed, denied or sent back for more information.
Confirm your iPhone, Apple Watch and account meet the requirements
Apple’s general baseline is an iPhone 8 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later, running the latest operating system that the device supports. You also need biometric authentication, a properly secured Apple Account and a U.S. device region.

Read the state-specific footnote
Apple’s general requirements are not the complete compatibility test. The participation page identifies higher requirements for Arkansas, California and Puerto Rico. Apple’s support guidance also warns that device and operating-system exceptions can vary by jurisdiction. Read the footnote for your state immediately before setup; do not assume that an iPhone meeting the general baseline qualifies everywhere.

Prepare the card and your surroundings
Use the actual card issued by the participating authority. Clean the camera lens, place the card on a plain, neutral surface and use bright, even lighting without glare. You will need to photograph the front and back, so leave enough space for the entire card to fit in the frame. Blurry text, reflections, cropped edges or a damaged card can prevent the scan from being accepted.
Have your Apple Account credentials available, make sure the phone has a reliable internet connection and remove anything that could obscure the card or your face. Enrollment is easier when you are not switching between apps, moving through a dark room or trying to complete the process while traveling.
How to add the license in Wallet
Enrollment starts on the iPhone even if you intend to add the ID to a paired Apple Watch. Keep the phone unlocked and connected while you complete every prompt.
- Open Wallet. Launch the Wallet app on the compatible iPhone.
- Start a new card. Tap the Add Card button.
- Select the identity option. Tap Driver’s License or ID Cards.
- Choose the issuing jurisdiction. Select your state or Puerto Rico from the list. If it is missing, verify the live participation list rather than choosing a different jurisdiction.
- Choose where to store it. Select iPhone only, or select iPhone plus the paired Apple Watch. The Watch is optional; you do not need one to use the ID on iPhone.
- Scan the front. Follow the on-screen frame to photograph the front of the license. Hold the phone steady until Wallet confirms the image.
- Scan the back. Turn the card over and capture the reverse side in the same way. Retake either image if Wallet reports that text is unclear or the card is out of frame.
- Complete the identity check. Follow the prompts for a Live Photo or selfie. Apple may also ask you to move your face or head in specific ways to show that the person enrolling is present.
- Authenticate and submit. Use Face ID or Touch ID when prompted. This authorizes sending the enrollment request to the issuing authority for review.
What to expect during scanning
Wallet may ask you to reposition the card, change the angle or try a capture again. That does not necessarily indicate a problem with the license. Keep the card flat, make sure all edges remain visible and avoid overhead light reflecting from holograms or glossy laminate. Do not substitute a photocopy, screenshot or photograph displayed on another screen; the requested document is the current physical card.
How to pass the Live Photo or selfie check
These checks are designed to compare the person enrolling with the identity document, so presentation matters. Stand against a plain background with even light on your face. Remove sunglasses, masks, hats and other accessories that obscure facial features. Keep the iPhone at the requested distance and hold it steady while following movement prompts. If the capture fails, improve the lighting and background before trying again instead of repeatedly submitting a poor image.

Follow only the movements shown on screen and complete them at a normal pace. A bright window behind you, a strong shadow across your face or a moving camera can make a good license scan unusable for the identity step.
Why the request may not be approved immediately
Submitting the scans does not create an instant approval. Apple states that the issuing authority, not Apple, makes the decision to approve or deny a request. The authority can request additional information or apply its own verification steps. Apple does not promise one approval time for every state, so a pending request should not be interpreted as an error or as an approval guarantee.
If a state asks for information, respond through the Wallet flow and read the request carefully. Apple cannot change the authority’s decision, correct a record in the state database or guarantee that a resubmission will be accepted.

What you can do after approval
After the authority approves the enrollment, the ID appears in Wallet on the device or devices you selected. Its usefulness depends on the organization accepting the credential, not merely on the fact that it is present in Wallet.

When a compatible reader or service requests information, Wallet shows what data is being requested. You review the request and authorize sharing with Face ID or Touch ID. A participating state does not require every business, website or checkpoint to accept the digital credential.
Present only the information requested
The presentation screen is not the same as handing over the entire physical card. Review the fields the reader or service requests before approving. If the request is unexpected, asks for more information than necessary or comes from an unfamiliar service, stop and verify the organization before authorizing it.
Keep your physical license with you
ID in Wallet is not a replacement for a physical ID. Apple specifically notes that the physical card may still be needed, including for use with law enforcement. It can also be required at a location that has no compatible reader, at an airport checkpoint that does not accept digital IDs, or wherever staff policy requires the physical document. Treat the Wallet version as an additional way to present identity, not as permission to discard or leave the card behind.

The same caution applies when crossing jurisdictions or using the ID for an unfamiliar service. A state’s participation in Apple’s program does not establish acceptance everywhere its residents travel.

Privacy and security during presentation
Apple says the ID data is encrypted. Apple and your state issuing authority cannot see when or where you share information from the Wallet ID. The person presenting the credential controls each disclosure: Wallet displays the requested information before sharing, and biometric authentication authorizes the transaction.
These protections do not change the acceptance rules. A business or agency still decides whether to accept the credential, and the issuing authority still controls enrollment and the underlying license record. Keep iPhone passcode and Apple Account protections enabled because they protect access to the device and its Wallet contents.
Do not send screenshots of the Wallet ID as a substitute for an in-person presentation. Use the Wallet request and authorization screen when a supported reader, app or website asks for information.

Apple’s support article limits an ID to one iPhone and one paired Apple Watch per Apple Account at a time. The Watch must be paired with the iPhone that holds the credential. If you replace your iPhone, Apple describes transferring the ID through Setup Assistant while setting up the new device. Follow the Setup Assistant prompts rather than trying to create a second independent enrollment; the issuing authority may need to verify the transfer.
If you selected iPhone only during enrollment, you can use the credential on that iPhone without owning an Apple Watch. Choosing iPhone plus a paired Watch places it on both devices, but it does not expand acceptance to locations that do not support ID in Wallet.
When preparing to move phones, keep the old iPhone available until Setup Assistant finishes and the credential appears on the new device. Do not erase the old phone first unless Apple’s transfer instructions for your situation tell you to do so.
Troubleshoot common enrollment problems
The Driver’s License or ID Cards option is missing
- Check Apple’s live participation list and confirm that your issuing state or territory is included.
- Verify that the iPhone is an iPhone 8 or later, the software is up to date, Face ID or Touch ID is configured, two-factor authentication is enabled for the Apple Account and the device region is United States.
- Read the state-specific footnote. Arkansas, California and Puerto Rico have higher requirements than Apple’s general baseline.
- If the jurisdiction has recently changed its participation status, wait for Apple’s list and the issuing authority’s systems to reflect the change rather than selecting another state.
The card scan will not complete
- Put the card on a neutral background under even, glare-free lighting.
- Keep all four edges visible and hold the phone still until the capture finishes.
- Clean the camera lens and retake both sides if any text is blurred, cropped or reflected.
- Use the current physical card. A photocopy, screenshot or an image displayed on another screen is not the document Wallet asks you to scan.
The selfie or movement check fails
- Remove sunglasses, masks, hats and other accessories that cover your face.
- Use a plain background and balanced light, avoiding a bright window behind you.
- Keep your head and phone steady and perform each requested movement slowly and fully.
- If the prompt continues to fail, close the attempt, correct the lighting or background and start the identity check again.
The request is pending, denied or asks for more information
The issuing authority controls this decision. Read every additional-information prompt and provide what the authority requests through the Wallet flow. Apple cannot override a state review or guarantee approval. If the authority denies the request, contact that authority for the reason and any appeal or correction process it provides.

Apple recommends trying again later or contacting the issuing authority. Before retrying, confirm that the device still meets the current state requirements and that your internet connection is stable. Repeated attempts will not bypass an outage or a state-side review.

The ID is not accepted where you expected
Acceptance is location-specific. Verify that the TSA checkpoint, business, organization, app or website supports ID in Wallet before presenting it. At an airport, look for checkpoint signage and keep the physical card available in case that checkpoint does not participate.

Can I add a license from a state that is not on Apple’s list?
No supported enrollment path is available until that issuing jurisdiction participates. Check Apple’s live list because participation can change.
Do I need an Apple Watch?
No. You can select iPhone only. An Apple Watch Series 4 or later is an optional destination when it is already paired with the iPhone.

No. The issuing authority reviews and approves or denies the request. Apple supplies the Wallet enrollment and presentation system.
Can I leave my physical license at home?
You should not rely on the Wallet copy alone. Apple says the physical ID may still be required, including during law-enforcement interactions and at locations that do not accept digital IDs.
Can I use the Wallet ID at any airport?
No. Apple describes acceptance at eligible TSA checkpoints, not every checkpoint. Confirm the specific checkpoint before travel.

Will changing my iPhone region make an unsupported state work?
No. A U.S. device region is a requirement, but it does not make an unlisted issuing jurisdiction eligible.
Can I use a photo of my license for enrollment?
No. Wallet asks you to scan the current physical license, front and back. A photocopy, screenshot or image on another screen is not a substitute.
What if I lose the iPhone that holds my Wallet ID?
Use Apple’s device-security and account protections, and contact the issuing authority if you need help with the credential. The Wallet ID does not replace the physical card, so keep that card available.
Can a business keep or copy the information from my Wallet presentation?
Wallet shows the information a supported reader or service requests, and you authorize the disclosure. Review the requested fields and the organization’s policy before approving.
Can I add the ID directly to Apple Watch?

What should I do if my state denies the request?
