You can add Yahoo Mail to Outlook with Yahoo’s browser-based sign-in, so you usually do not need to type your Yahoo password into an old-style mail server form. The exact steps depend on whether you use New Outlook for Windows or classic Outlook.
Use automatic setup first. If classic Outlook cannot detect Yahoo’s settings, configure the account manually as IMAP. IMAP keeps messages and folders synchronized between Outlook and Yahoo Mail, while POP does not provide the same two-way folder synchronization.
Before you begin
Have these details ready:
- Your complete Yahoo email address, including
@yahoo.comor your account’s actual domain. - Your regular Yahoo password for Yahoo’s browser-based authorization screen.
- Access to your Yahoo two-factor authentication method, if enabled.
Microsoft’s current Yahoo-specific setup instructions cover Outlook for Microsoft 365 and New Outlook for Windows. Classic Outlook troubleshooting also applies to Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, Outlook 2021, Outlook 2019, and Outlook 2016.
Add Yahoo Mail to New Outlook for Windows
New Outlook uses Yahoo’s authorization page rather than asking you to enter the Yahoo password directly into a generic IMAP dialog.

- Open Outlook.
- Select View > View settings. You can also choose File > Account info.
- Select Accounts > Your accounts.
- Select Add Account.
- Enter your Yahoo email address and select Continue.
- On the Sync your Yahoo account screen, select Continue.
- A browser tab titled Sign in using your Yahoo account opens. Sign in to Yahoo and complete two-factor authentication if prompted.
- Review Yahoo’s permissions request and select Agree.
- If the browser displays a message saying that
https://outlook.office.comwants to open the application, select Open. - Back in Outlook, select the folder for the Yahoo address, then select Inbox.
Give Outlook time to synchronize the mailbox. Large Yahoo accounts may take longer to display all messages and folders.
If “Your accounts” is missing
If Accounts > Your accounts is not present, you may be using classic Outlook rather than New Outlook. Close the settings window and follow the classic Outlook instructions below.
Add Yahoo Mail to classic Outlook automatically
Automatic setup is the preferred option in classic Outlook because Outlook can use Yahoo’s supported sign-in process and populate the server settings for you.

- Select + Add Account.
- Enter your Yahoo email address and select Connect.
- When the Yahoo sign-in window appears, sign in and complete any two-factor authentication prompt.
- On Yahoo’s permissions screen, select Agree.
- When Outlook reports that the account was successfully added, select Done.
- If Outlook offers Set up Outlook Mobile on my phone, too and you do not want to configure the mobile app, clear that option.
- Select the Yahoo folder in the navigation pane, then select Inbox.
If Outlook does not complete setup, do not keep retrying the same password indefinitely. The problem may be the authentication method, a blocked app-password feature, or an incorrectly detected account configuration. Use manual IMAP setup or the troubleshooting sections below.
Configure Yahoo Mail manually as IMAP
Use manual setup when automatic setup fails or Outlook cannot detect Yahoo’s settings. IMAP is the appropriate account type when you want messages, deletions, read status, and folders to synchronize with Yahoo Mail.

- In classic Outlook, select File > Add Account.
- Enter the Yahoo email address.
- Select Advanced options.
- Turn on Let me set up my account manually.
- Select POP or IMAP.
- Enter the requested password and select Connect.
- If setup fails, select Change Account Settings.
- Correct the server, port, encryption, or authentication values using the table below, then select Connect.
- Select Done after the account is added successfully.

For outgoing mail, make sure My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is enabled if Outlook presents that option. Use the same full Yahoo email address for outgoing authentication.
Should you use your Yahoo password or an app password?
The answer depends on which sign-in screen Outlook displays:

The claim that Yahoo always requires an app password for Outlook is outdated. Microsoft added Yahoo IMAP OAuth support beginning with Outlook build 16308.10000 in the Office Beta and Current Channel (Preview), and reported that Yahoo OAuth reached 100% of the Current Channel on August 2, 2023. In an OAuth flow, enter the regular Yahoo password—even if you have already generated an app password.
For a traditional IMAP connection, Yahoo’s current guidance is to use an app password. In Yahoo Account Security, look for Generate app password and create a password for Outlook or another mail application. Copy the generated value into Outlook; do not add spaces unless Yahoo explicitly shows them as part of the value.
Previously configured accounts may ask you to authenticate again after Outlook gains or switches to Yahoo OAuth. If the prompt is Yahoo’s browser-based OAuth prompt, use the normal Yahoo password.

Fix common Yahoo setup problems
Outlook keeps rejecting a correct password
A correct Yahoo password can fail when Outlook is using traditional IMAP authentication and Yahoo requires an app password. Check which type of prompt you are seeing before changing the password.
Also check these common causes:
- Caps Lock is enabled.
- The username is misspelled.
- You entered only the part before
@yahoo.cominstead of the complete email address. - You changed the Yahoo password online but did not update the saved Outlook credentials.
- The Yahoo password has expired under the provider’s password policy.
- You entered an app password into a Yahoo OAuth prompt. OAuth requires the regular Yahoo password.
Yahoo says the app-password feature is unavailable
Yahoo’s App Password Generator can display “Sorry, this feature is not available right now!” Microsoft documented that this occurred frequently shortly after a Yahoo account was created. For many users, the restriction stopped after approximately two weeks, although some accounts remained affected.
If you cannot generate an app password, use an Outlook build or channel that supports Yahoo OAuth and complete the browser-based Yahoo authorization instead. This avoids the traditional app-password requirement.
Outlook never asks for a password
When using classic Outlook’s manual IMAP setup, first check that Require logon using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is unchecked. Yahoo’s IMAP setup does not use that Outlook option.
If Outlook still skips the password prompt, recreate the account through Windows Control Panel:

- Open Windows Search, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select Mail.
- Select Email Accounts….
- On the Email tab, select New.
- Enter your name, complete Yahoo email address, and password in both Password and Retype Password.
- Select Next and complete the on-screen setup.
- Select Finish.
Existing messages or folders are missing
Check that the account was added as IMAP, not POP. POP does not provide the same two-way mailbox and folder synchronization, so existing Yahoo folders may not appear as expected.
If the account is already configured as IMAP, allow synchronization to finish and compare Outlook with Yahoo Mail in a web browser. A message or folder that exists online but not in Outlook usually indicates an account-type, folder-subscription, or synchronization problem rather than a missing Yahoo message.
Outlook is offline or cannot receive mail
If classic Outlook’s status bar says Working Offline, select Send/Receive > Work Offline to turn offline mode off. Also check your internet connection and compare the account’s incoming and outgoing settings with Yahoo’s current values.
If messages are stuck in the Outbox, treat that as a sending or Outbox problem. Recheck the SMTP server, port, encryption, and authentication settings rather than repeating the account-addition steps.
Remove Yahoo Mail from Outlook
New Outlook
- Open View > View settings, or choose File > Account info.
- Select Accounts > Your accounts.
- Beside the Yahoo account, select Manage.
- Select Remove.
- Choose whether to remove it from this device or, if offered, all devices.
Removing the account from Outlook does not delete the Yahoo mailbox or its messages.

Classic Outlook
- Select File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
- Select the Yahoo account.
- Select Remove.
- Select OK if prompted, then select Close.

FAQ
Can I add Yahoo Mail to Outlook without an app password?
Yes. If Outlook opens Yahoo’s browser-based authorization page, sign in with your regular Yahoo password and approve access. An app password is mainly needed when Outlook uses traditional IMAP authentication instead of Yahoo OAuth.
Why does Outlook keep asking for my Yahoo password?
Check that you are using the complete Yahoo email address, that Caps Lock is off, and that Outlook has the current password. If the account uses traditional IMAP authentication, replace the normal password with a Yahoo-generated app password. If Yahoo OAuth is displayed, use the regular Yahoo password instead.
Why are my Yahoo folders not showing in Outlook?
The account may have been added as POP instead of IMAP. Remove and re-add it as IMAP so Outlook can synchronize Yahoo messages and folders in both directions.

What are Yahoo’s incoming and outgoing mail servers for Outlook?
Use imap.mail.yahoo.com on port 993 with SSL/TLS for incoming mail. Use smtp.mail.yahoo.com on port 465 with SSL/TLS or port 587 with STARTTLS for outgoing mail. Authentication is required.
Does removing Yahoo from Outlook delete my Yahoo emails?
No. Removing the account only removes its Outlook connection from the selected device or devices. The Yahoo mailbox remains available through Yahoo Mail.
