To add a Steam Workshop map, stop the Project Zomboid server, identify the map’s Workshop ID, Mod ID, and folder name, then place those values in the server’s configuration: the numeric ID in WorkshopItems=, the activation IDs in Mods=, and the map folders in the singular Map= entry. Separate map folders with semicolons, put Muldraugh, KY last, start the server with Steam integration enabled, and use the console to confirm that the download and mod loading succeeded.
What the three server settings do
A Workshop map uses three related but different identifiers. Confusing them is the most common reason a map downloads but does not appear in game.

These values are normally shown in the map author’s Workshop description. Copy the spelling and capitalization exactly. A Workshop title such as “Example County” is not necessarily the Mod ID or folder name.
Before you edit the server
Confirm the game and server build
Project Zomboid’s Build 41 and Build 42 configurations can differ. A map made for one build may not support the other, and configuration labels or installation instructions can change. Check the map page for its supported build and read any author-specific setup notes before changing the server.

Make sure you have the right access
You need permission to stop the server and edit its dedicated-server settings. A self-hosted installation usually exposes an INI file. A control-panel host may put the same settings behind a web editor or store them in a provider-specific directory. Do not assume that a panel’s “Mods” field is the same as a local file path; use the panel’s documented server-configuration editor.
Back up the configuration
Stop the server completely, then make a copy of the current INI file before editing it. A backup lets you restore a known-good configuration if a typo prevents startup or causes maps to load incorrectly. Never edit a live file while the server process is still writing to it.
Find the server INI file
Dedicated-server settings are commonly reported under Zomboid/Server/<servername>.ini. Typical locations are:
- Windows:
C:Users<username>ZomboidServer - macOS or Linux:
~/Zomboid/Server/
The exact location is not universal. A panel host can keep the file elsewhere, and a server created with a custom name will use that name in the filename. If you cannot find it, use the panel’s configuration page or search for the INI associated with the server name you start. Do not create a second file in a guessed directory: the server will continue using the original file.
Collect the map’s identifiers and dependencies
Workshop ID
The Workshop ID is the numeric item ID in the map’s Steam Workshop address or description. Put only that number in WorkshopItems=. If you install more than one Workshop item, separate their numeric IDs using the delimiter already used by your server template; do not add labels, quotes, or Workshop URLs.

Mod ID
The Mod ID is a short identifier supplied by the author, often in a section headed “Mod ID,” “server installation,” or “required mods.” A map can have a different Mod ID from its Workshop ID. Add the map’s Mod ID to Mods=, along with every required dependency. Dependencies can include a tile pack, a bridge package, a parent map, or several map modules.
Map folder name
The folder name belongs in Map=. It is usually listed separately from the Mod ID. Treat it as case-sensitive: BedfordFalls and bedfordfalls are different strings to the server. Some Workshop maps contain several folders, such as a main area plus north, south, or west extensions. Add every folder the author says is required.
Check the author’s current instructions
Map metadata can change, and an older forum example may no longer match the current Workshop upload. Use the live Workshop description for the IDs and folder list. If the description supplies a complete server INI line, compare it with your existing file rather than blindly replacing unrelated settings.
Edit the configuration safely
- Stop the server. Use the server console or control panel’s stop command and wait until the process is fully offline.
- Open the active INI file. Confirm that its filename matches the server instance you actually launch.
- Update
WorkshopItems=. Enter the map’s numeric Workshop ID. Add other Workshop IDs required by the map author. - Update
Mods=. Enter the map’s Mod ID and all required dependency Mod IDs. Use the separator expected by the existing file, normally semicolons, and do not insert commas between IDs. - Update the singular
Map=key. Enter the exact folder name. For multiple folders, separate entries with semicolons and no spaces. - Keep the vanilla map last. The final entry should remain
Muldraugh, KY, after all custom map folders. - Save the file without changing its format. Do not add quotation marks around values or create a second
Mapkey. - Start the server with Steam integration enabled. Do not use the
-nosteamlaunch option when relying on automatic Workshop downloads.
A minimal pattern looks like this (replace the example values with those from the current map page):
WorkshopItems=1234567890
Mods=ExampleMap;ExampleTiles
Map=ExampleMap;Muldraugh, KYThe comma in Muldraugh, KY is part of the vanilla folder name. It is not a separator. Do not use commas between custom map folders or Mod IDs.

Handling maps with several folders
Large maps are often split into modules. The author may list a main folder and additional regions that must all appear before the vanilla map. A reported 2021 example used:
Map=BedfordFalls;North;South;West;Muldraugh, KYThis demonstrates the syntax, not a universal current configuration. Verify that the map still uses those folder names and that every module is required. Leaving out one module can produce an incomplete map or a map that fails to load. Conversely, adding a folder that belongs to a different release can create conflicts.
Start the server and verify the download
Read the startup console
On the first start after the change, watch the console or server log. You should see messages indicating that Steam Workshop items are being downloaded or updated, followed by mod-loading messages. A successful download does not by itself prove that the map is active; the Mod ID and Map entry must also be accepted.
Check for identifier errors
Stop and correct the configuration if the console reports an unknown Workshop item, missing Mod ID, missing folder, or malformed list. Compare each value character by character with the Workshop description, including uppercase letters, underscores, and numbers.

After the server finishes loading, connect with a client using the same game build and the required Workshop subscriptions. Use the in-game map or travel to the area where the custom map should connect. If the server loads but the area is missing, return to the troubleshooting checks below rather than adding random IDs.

Troubleshooting a map that does not appear
1. Recheck Mod ID and folder spelling
Start with the two values most often confused: the Mod ID in Mods= and the folder name in Map=. They are not interchangeable, and folder names are case-sensitive. Remove extra spaces and ensure that the active INI file—not a backup or similarly named file—contains the change.
2. Confirm every required module is present
If the author lists separate north, south, west, bridge, or tile folders, include all of them in the required lists. A reported map setup worked only after all of its required map folders were added before Muldraugh, KY. Treat that as a diagnostic pattern, not a guarantee that every map uses the same modules.
3. Check list syntax
Use semicolons between map folders and do not put spaces around them. Do not use commas as separators. Keep one singular Map= key containing the complete folder sequence. A second Map= line can override or confuse the first, depending on the server build.
4. Put the vanilla map last
Some host documentation states that Muldraugh, KY must be the final Map entry for other maps to load. A forum report also described a custom map failing when it was not at the end of the Mod list. Sources differ on how strict the Mod-list ordering rule is, so use the map author’s order when provided, while preserving Muldraugh, KY as the final Map entry.
5. Verify Steam integration
If the server starts with -nosteam, automatic Workshop retrieval will not work as expected. Remove that option for a Steam Workshop installation, restart, and look for download messages. If a panel has a Steam toggle, enable it before restarting.

6. Distinguish download failure from load failure
A download error means the server could not obtain the Workshop item; check the numeric Workshop ID, Steam connectivity, and the server’s ability to reach Steam. A load error after a successful download usually points to a wrong Mod ID, missing dependency, wrong folder case, or an unsupported build.
When file copying is mentioned
Installation advice is inconsistent. Some hosting guides instruct administrators to copy map folders from a local computer into the server’s mods directory over FTP and, in some cases, add spawn-region entries. A developer reply in a 2024 Workshop discussion, written before Build 42, said that copying was not necessary for that setup. That reply does not establish a rule for every map or Build 42 server.

Use this order of operations:
- Follow the current map author’s server instructions first.
- Try the INI-based Workshop installation with Steam integration enabled.
- If the Workshop item downloads but the map still cannot load, check the server’s downloaded Workshop and mod directories and the console for a missing-file error.
- Only then use the author’s documented FTP-copy procedure, if one exists. Copy the exact folders and preserve their names and case.
- Add spawn-region settings only when the map author or your host specifically documents the required entries. Do not invent spawn coordinates or copy settings from an unrelated map.
Do not mix an obsolete copied version with a newer Workshop version unless the author explains how to avoid duplicate files.
Build 42 considerations
Build 42 instructions need extra caution. One single-source guide reports that each Mod ID may require a backslash prefix, but that behavior has not been independently confirmed. Do not add backslashes to a production server solely because of that claim. Check the map’s Build 42 instructions, test the exact syntax on a disposable or maintenance server, and use the startup log to see whether the IDs are recognized.
Build 42.19 guides and Build 41 guides may show different key names, locations, or dependency rules. Never merge snippets from both versions without checking the map author’s current notes. If the server ignores a value that worked in Build 41, treat the build change as a likely cause and verify the current configuration format before trying file copies.
