A PC needs a wireless network adapter to connect to Wi-Fi. If Device Manager shows no wireless adapter, add compatible Wi-Fi hardware—most directly, a USB Wi-Fi adapter. If an adapter is already present, troubleshoot its driver or device state before buying anything.
Check whether your PC already has Wi-Fi hardware
- In Windows, open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters and look for an adapter with “wireless” in its name.
Microsoft describes a wireless network adapter as hardware that connects a device to a wireless network. If one appears, Wi-Fi hardware is present; investigate whether its driver is installed and whether the device is enabled instead of assuming the PC needs a new adapter. If none appears, the PC may lack wireless hardware. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi guidance explains the hardware requirement and how to connect.
Choose a way to get online

Set up a USB Wi-Fi adapter
- Choose an adapter whose manufacturer lists support for your version of Windows. Check the required USB interface, supported bands and Wi-Fi standards, and installation instructions.
- Install the adapter according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Windows may detect it automatically, or it may need a driver.
- If the driver is missing and the PC cannot get online, download the driver from the adapter manufacturer on another device. Copy it to a USB flash drive, transfer it to the PC, and install it there. This can resolve a driver issue, but it cannot replace missing Wi-Fi hardware.
- Once Windows recognizes the adapter, open the network controls, select your Wi-Fi network, choose Connect, and enter the network password. Labels and menus can vary by Windows version.

Use a wired connection or phone hotspot instead
Ethernet when the PC is near the router
If you do not need wireless networking, a wired connection may be simpler. When the PC has no Ethernet port, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter can provide one. Connect it to the PC, then run an Ethernet cable to an available port on the router. This is a wired network connection, not Wi-Fi. See Microsoft’s connection guidance.
Phone hotspot for temporary access
If your phone and plan support hotspot use, enable the hotspot on the phone and connect the PC using a supported method. The shared connection uses mobile data, so check your plan’s allowance and charges first. Microsoft describes ways to use a phone as a mobile hotspot.

Secure the Wi-Fi connection
Use WPA3 security when both the router and the PC’s wireless hardware support it. Do not assume a particular adapter supports WPA3; check its specifications and the router’s settings. Microsoft provides guidance on making a Wi-Fi network more secure.
