To add tabs to a WordPress page with Elementor, open the page in the Elementor editor, drag the Tabs widget onto the canvas, and edit each tab’s title and content. Use Add Item for more tabs, then adjust orientation, alignment, styling, and responsive settings before saving or publishing.
The basic Tabs widget is listed in Elementor’s free widget set, so a Pro subscription is not universally required. You may need a plan that includes a particular advanced feature, however, especially when your tab panels contain nested Elementor widgets or other paid functionality.

Tabs divide related information into switchable panels. A visitor clicks a tab title, and Elementor displays that tab’s content without requiring a separate page. Elementor describes its widget this way: The Tabs widget allows you to organize and divide content into tabs horizontally or vertically.

Typical uses include product specifications, service details, grouped instructions, biographies, pricing-plan explanations, and frequently requested information. Tabs work best when every panel belongs to the same subject and each label clearly tells visitors what they will find.

Choose the right Elementor tab implementation
Elementor provides two useful approaches. The standard Tabs widget is intended for titles with text or basic content. Nested Tabs allow each panel to contain additional Elementor widgets and containers.

The nested approach is the better choice when a panel needs a button, image, icon box, multiple columns, or another structured layout. Elementor explains the feature and its responsive breakpoint in its Nested Tabs documentation.
Do you need Elementor Pro?
For a basic set of tabs, not necessarily. Elementor’s current pricing page places Tabs in the Free widget set: Elementor’s widget and plan information. Elementor Developers also states, Elementor Core is a free WordPress plugin.

That does not mean every tab design is available on every plan. The widget itself can be free while a widget you place inside a panel, a site-wide template feature, or another advanced option is plan-dependent. Check the current plan matrix for the exact feature you intend to use rather than assuming that all nested content requires Pro or that no nested content does.
- Use the free workflow when you need tab labels and text or basic content.
- Check paid-plan requirements when a panel needs an advanced Elementor widget or another Pro-only capability.
- Do not upgrade solely because you saw “tabs.” The basic Tabs widget is listed as free.
Install Elementor before creating tabs
If Elementor is not active, install it from WordPress’s built-in plugin installer or upload the plugin package, then activate it. The WordPress.org Elementor listing documents both installation routes and identifies nested elements as part of the editor’s capabilities.
- In WordPress, open the plugin installation screen.
- Use the built-in search to find Elementor, or choose the option to upload its package.
- Install and activate the plugin.
- Open an existing page or create a new page, then choose to edit it with Elementor.
The exact settings available after activation can change as Elementor evolves. If a feature is missing, first confirm that the plugin is active and that your selected plan includes the feature you are trying to use.

How to add a basic Tabs widget
These steps create a conventional text-oriented tab set.
- Open the page in Elementor. From WordPress, edit an existing page or create a new one, then launch the Elementor editor.
- Open the widget panel. Click the plus or add control used to view Elementor’s widgets.
- Insert Tabs. Find Tabs and drag it onto the page canvas. In editor experiences that use a named element instead of a widget, choose the applicable Tabs element.
- Edit the first item. In the Content panel, replace the default tab title with a short, descriptive label and enter the panel’s content.
- Add more panels. Select Add Item for each additional tab. Give every item its own title and content.
- Reorder or remove items. Use the item controls to put the panels in the order visitors should encounter them, and delete items you do not need.
- Set the presentation. Choose horizontal or vertical direction where that control is available, then set alignment.
- Style the widget. Use the Style and Advanced panels for colors, typography, borders, spacing, and responsive behavior.
- Preview and save. Check the page at desktop and mobile widths, activate every tab, then save or publish.
Edit tab titles and content clearly
Write labels that answer a question
A label should identify the panel without requiring visitors to guess. “Features,” “Specifications,” and “Installation” are clearer than “More” or “Details.” Keep the wording parallel: if one label is a noun, use nouns for the other labels rather than mixing sentences, dates, and vague terms.
Keep each panel focused
Put one closely related group of information in each panel. A long, mixed panel defeats the purpose of tabs and makes it harder to find a specific answer. If a panel grows into several unrelated sections, consider Nested Tabs with internal containers or a separate section on the page.
Add, remove, and reorder without rebuilding
Use Add Item to create a new panel rather than duplicating the whole widget. Reordering the item list changes the order of the visible tab titles and their associated content. Removing an item removes that panel from the tab set, so review the remaining order before publishing.
Put widgets inside a tab with Nested Tabs
The standard text field is not the right tool for a panel that needs several Elementor elements. Nested Tabs let a tab contain widgets and containers, including headings, icon boxes, countdowns, images, buttons, and other Elementor elements, as described in Elementor’s Nested Tabs guide.
- Insert or select a Nested Tabs widget. In the Elementor widget panel, choose the Tabs experience that supports nested containers, if it is available in your editor.
- Select the tab item you want to build. Work inside that item’s content area rather than placing widgets beside the tab widget.
- Add a container or widget. Insert the heading, image, button, icon box, countdown, or other element into the tab’s nested area.
- Configure each element normally. Edit its content, link, alignment, spacing, and responsive settings through that element’s controls.
- Repeat for other tabs. Each tab has its own nested content, so check that you are editing the intended item before changing a widget.
Some editor versions require the nested-elements capability to be activated before the nested layout is available. If Elementor presents a capability or feature prompt, enable nested elements in the editor’s settings, then return to the page and reopen the Tabs widget.

When standard Tabs are enough
Choose the standard widget when every panel is primarily text or basic content and you do not need separate Elementor elements inside the panels. It has fewer moving parts and is quicker to maintain.
When Nested Tabs are worth using
Use Nested Tabs when panel content needs its own layout, multiple columns, calls to action, media, or reusable Elementor components. The extra structure gives you independent controls, but it also means more elements to check at different screen sizes.
Change direction, alignment, and appearance
After the content is in place, select the Tabs widget and open its layout controls. Where offered, choose a horizontal row of titles or a vertical list. Adjust alignment so the tab labels match the surrounding design.
Use the Style panel to set the visual hierarchy between active and inactive titles and to control typography, colors, borders, and spacing. Use Advanced controls when you need additional margins, padding, positioning, or responsive overrides. Keep the active state visibly different from inactive titles so visitors can tell which panel is open.
Make changes at the breakpoint where they are needed instead of changing the desktop value blindly. A spacing adjustment that looks balanced on a wide screen can make a narrow tab label wrap or push content below the fold.
Turn tabs into an accordion on mobile
Nested Tabs documentation includes a responsive breakpoint at which the tabs can display as an accordion. This lets the desktop layout use tab titles while smaller screens show expandable panels in a vertical sequence. Open the Nested Tabs responsive controls, choose the breakpoint supplied by the editor, and select the accordion behavior. Then preview the page below that width.

- Open the Nested Tabs widget’s responsive settings.
- Choose the breakpoint at which the mobile presentation should change.
- Enable the accordion presentation for that breakpoint when the option is available.
- Preview at a width below the selected breakpoint.
- Open and close every panel to confirm that labels, content, spacing, and nested widgets remain usable.
The breakpoint is a design decision, not a universal device rule. Choose it where your labels or panel layout stop fitting comfortably, then verify the result on the actual page. If your editor does not show an accordion setting, confirm that you are using the Nested Tabs implementation and that its required capability is active.
Preview, save, and test before publishing
Do not judge a tab set only from the editor canvas. Use Elementor’s responsive preview and the published page to test the interaction visitors will use.
- Activate every tab title and confirm that the matching panel appears.
- Check that each title still describes its panel after reordering.
- Test links and buttons inside nested panels.
- Inspect long headings, images, and buttons at narrow widths.
- Verify that the active tab is visually distinguishable.
- Save or publish only after checking both desktop and mobile views.
After publishing, test the page in a normal browser window as well as the editor preview. This catches issues caused by the page’s live styling, cached assets, or other page elements that are not obvious while editing.
Standard Tabs versus Nested Tabs: a practical decision

This choice is about the content you need to build, not the number of tab titles. A five-item set can remain standard if every panel is simple; a two-item set may justify Nested Tabs if each panel contains a complete layout.

Troubleshoot common tab problems
The Tabs widget does not appear in the panel
Confirm that Elementor is installed and active, then search the widget panel for “Tabs.” If you are looking for a nested version, check whether nested elements are enabled in the editor. Also verify that the page is actually open in Elementor rather than the default WordPress editor.
New tabs are not showing
Open the widget’s Content panel and use Add Item. Make sure the new item was added to the current Tabs widget, not to a different element on the page. Give it a title and content, then save and preview.

A widget will not stay inside the panel
You may be editing a standard text-oriented Tabs widget. Switch to the Nested Tabs implementation, select the target tab’s nested content area, and insert the widget there. If Nested Tabs is unavailable, check the editor’s nested-elements capability and the plan requirements for the widget you want to insert.
The mobile layout is crowded
Shorten long labels, reduce excessive spacing at the mobile breakpoint, and test the widget at progressively narrower widths. If you are using Nested Tabs, choose an accordion breakpoint and inspect every expanded panel below it.

The tab changes but the content looks wrong
Check that each item contains the intended content and that no widget was accidentally placed outside the selected panel. Reopen the item list, verify the order, and activate every title in preview mode.
Changes are visible in the editor but not on the live page
Save or publish the page, reload the live URL, and test again. If the old layout remains, clear the relevant page or site cache and reload in a private browser window. Confirm that you edited the same page visitors are viewing.
Design and content practices that make tabs easier to use
- Use concise, specific labels that remain understandable without surrounding prose.
- Put the most important or most frequently requested panel first.
- Keep label lengths reasonably similar so the row does not jump as visitors scan it.
- Use consistent heading levels and spacing inside every panel.
- Do not hide essential information solely inside a tab when all visitors need to see it immediately.
- Check keyboard focus, link activation, and the visible active state in the published page, not only in the editor.
- For nested layouts, test each widget independently at desktop and mobile widths.
A repeatable workflow
- Decide whether the panels need only text or a full Elementor layout.
- Confirm Elementor is installed and active and check the plan for any advanced widget involved.
- Open the page in Elementor and insert Tabs or Nested Tabs.
- Create and name each item with Add Item.
- Place text in standard panels or widgets and containers in Nested Tabs.
- Set direction, alignment, typography, colors, borders, and spacing.
- Choose responsive behavior, including an accordion breakpoint for Nested Tabs when appropriate.
- Preview every panel at desktop and mobile widths.
- Save or publish, then test the live page.
Following that sequence keeps content decisions separate from styling and responsive adjustments, which makes a tab set easier to diagnose when something does not look right.
