To add storage to a mini PC, first identify its exact model and check the manufacturer’s manual for an available M.2 slot, a 2.5-inch SATA bay, and the drive types and sizes each supports. If there is no suitable internal connection—or you would rather not open the case—use external storage through a data-capable USB port and a compatible drive or enclosure.
Decide whether you need a second drive for files, a larger replacement for the Windows boot drive, or portable or multi-drive storage. Those are different jobs: a second drive normally gives you another volume rather than making the existing C: drive larger, while replacing the boot drive requires a backup and a migration or fresh installation.
Choose the right kind of storage upgrade
Mini PCs vary considerably. The same case size does not guarantee the same internal slots, storage protocol, drive length, capacity limit, or installation hardware. Start with the exact model name and revision, then use its official support page or manual to determine what fits. As Jason Weng puts it in GMKtec’s mini PC SSD upgrade guide, “A mini PC SSD upgrade starts with the exact storage slot, not just the capacity on the box.”
There are three common routes: install an M.2 SSD in a compatible slot, fit a 2.5-inch SATA drive if the chassis has a bay, or attach storage externally. The best choice depends on the model and whether your priority is internal fit, easy installation, portability, or several drives for a larger library.

Check internal compatibility before buying
Do not buy a drive based only on a phrase such as “M.2 slot” or “SSD support.” Those labels do not tell you whether a particular drive will work. Confirm each of the following against the manual or official specification for your exact mini PC.
- Slot availability: Find out whether a second slot is actually free. A computer may have only one M.2 connection, already occupied by the boot drive.
- Protocol: Determine whether the slot accepts NVMe over PCIe, SATA, or a specified type. M.2 describes a family of physical formats; it does not make SATA and NVMe drives interchangeable.
- Physical length: Check the supported form factor, such as 2280 or 2242, and verify that the mounting point and chassis clearance accommodate it.
- Capacity limit: Use the model’s stated support rather than assuming a drive of any capacity will be recognized. A published maximum is specific to that computer.
- Thermal and physical clearance: Check whether the manual specifies a heatsink or other thermal provision and whether the installed drive can fit without interfering with the cover or other components.
- Bay hardware: For a 2.5-inch drive, check the bay height, cable or connector, and whether a tray or cable is included. The fact that a chassis has room does not guarantee the necessary connection hardware is present.
The distinction between M.2 protocols can matter even when two drives appear physically similar. GMKtec’s guide describes different examples: an M.2 2242 SATA expansion slot and an M.2 2280 PCIe slot. A 2242 NVMe drive is not a like-for-like substitute for the SATA drive in that example. Check the specification for your own machine rather than using either example as a universal rule.
Manufacturer examples: specifications are model-specific
Minisforum lists its NAB6 Lite with one M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 SSD slot supporting up to 2 TB and one 2.5-inch SATA 3.0 expansion slot. These specifications apply to the NAB6 Lite, not mini PCs as a category; consult the NAB Series product page for that model’s stated configuration.

Physical fit also varies by model. The ASUS PN62/PN62S manual specifies support for 7 mm and 9.5 mm 2.5-inch HDDs or SSDs. ASUS notes that its illustrations are for reference and slots can vary by model, so do not treat those drive-height limits as applicable to other mini PCs. Check the PN62/PN62S user manual if you are working with one of those computers.
Option 1: Add an internal M.2 SSD
An M.2 drive can be a compact way to add internal capacity, provided there is a compatible free slot. Before ordering, match the slot’s protocol and drive length, confirm capacity support, and account for any mounting or thermal requirements. A drive that fits the connector but uses the wrong protocol or length is not a safe choice.
- Identify the full model and revision. Look for the label on the mini PC, its original documentation, or the manufacturer’s support page. Avoid relying on a similar model’s specifications.
- Locate the storage specification. In the manual, identify the available M.2 slots and note which one is occupied, if any. Record the supported protocol, length, capacity, and any clearance or thermal requirements.
- Choose the drive to match. Compare the drive’s specification with every relevant slot requirement. If the manual does not establish compatibility or a capacity limit, do not assume support from the M.2 label alone.
- Prepare for service. Back up important files, shut down the computer, disconnect power and peripherals, and follow the model’s service instructions for opening the case. If you are not comfortable working inside the chassis, use external storage instead.
- Install and secure the drive. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for access and mounting. Do not force a drive, connector, or cover if the parts do not align; recheck the drive length, slot type, and installation steps.
- Set up the new volume. Once the operating system recognizes the drive, initialize or format it if necessary, then select it in the operating system or application settings where you want new files stored. The exact process depends on the operating system and the drive’s state.
If the slot is occupied by the current Windows drive, adding storage there is not the same as adding a second drive. A model with no free compatible M.2 slot may still support a 2.5-inch bay or external storage, so check all available options before deciding that a boot-drive replacement is necessary.

Option 2: Add a 2.5-inch SATA SSD or HDD
A documented 2.5-inch SATA bay provides another internal expansion route. A SATA SSD is a solid-state option for an internal data drive; an HDD can serve as a bulk-storage choice. They are not identical performance or physical choices, so check the individual drive specifications for the characteristics you need. The available sources do not establish comparable measured speeds or current prices for these options.
Before buying, verify that the mini PC has the bay and supports a drive of the intended height. Also check whether you need a SATA cable, proprietary connector, mounting tray, or other hardware, and whether it comes with the computer. A drive that meets the height limit can still be unusable if the required connection or mounting part is missing.
- Confirm the bay and connection. Use the official manual to verify that the exact model supports a 2.5-inch SATA drive and to identify any required cable, connector, or tray.
- Match the drive dimensions. Confirm the supported height as well as the 2.5-inch form factor. Do not apply the PN62/PN62S manual’s 7 mm and 9.5 mm allowance to other models.
- Check what is already installed. Determine whether the bay is empty and whether any included cable or mounting hardware is available before purchasing additional parts.
- Install using the model’s service procedure. Back up important files, power down and disconnect the computer, and follow its instructions for opening and reassembling the chassis.
- Prepare the volume for use. If the operating system does not already present the drive as a usable volume, initialize or format it as appropriate and choose it in the relevant storage settings.
Do not infer a supported bay from a product photograph or another computer in the same product family. The manufacturer’s documentation for the precise configuration is the deciding reference.

Option 3: Use an external SSD or USB enclosure
External storage is the direct option when the mini PC lacks a suitable internal slot, you want to avoid opening it, or you need a drive that can be moved between computers. You can use an external SSD or put a separate drive in a compatible USB enclosure. For an enclosure, check that it supports the installed drive’s physical size and interface, including whether that drive is SATA or NVMe.
Check the computer’s USB port as well as the enclosure. A USB-C connector’s shape alone does not establish that it supports data or indicate its data capability. GMKtec recommends checking both the enclosure’s drive support and the mini PC’s USB connection in its compatibility guidance. Throughput depends on both sides of the connection, so do not choose based on a drive or enclosure specification alone.

- For several drives or a large library: Consider a direct-attached storage (DAS) enclosure. Compare the interface, bay count, supported drives, cooling, acoustics, and budget before choosing one.
TerraMaster’s guide to expanding mini PC storage discusses those DAS selection factors and hybrid enclosures that hold SSDs and HDDs. That is vendor-authored guidance, not an independent comparison of particular enclosures. A multi-bay enclosure is most relevant when the need is more than a single extra drive; for one portable drive, it may add unnecessary hardware and setup.

Adding a data drive is different from replacing the Windows boot drive
If the mini PC has a free compatible slot, installing another physical drive normally gives the system a separate volume for files. It does not automatically enlarge the existing Windows C: drive. You can direct supported applications or folders to the new volume through their own storage settings, but an application may not let you move every component after installation.
Replacing the drive that contains Windows is a migration task. Plan for a backup and either a supported cloning process or a fresh operating-system installation. Simply copying the Windows folder to another drive is not a substitute for a supported migration. GMKtec also cautions that some vendor migration utilities have eligibility rules.
- Back up important data first. Keep a separate copy of files you cannot afford to lose before changing the boot drive.
- Confirm the destination is supported. Check the computer’s slot or bay requirements and make sure the replacement drive is compatible.
- Choose a migration route. Use a cloning utility only if it supports your source and destination drives and your system’s eligibility requirements. Otherwise, plan for a fresh operating-system installation and restoration from backup.
- Verify source and destination before cloning. Selecting the wrong disk as the destination can erase its contents. Read the utility’s drive identification carefully before starting.
- Complete setup and verify access. After migration or installation, confirm the system boots and that important files and applications are available before relying on the old drive as your only copy.
Set up a newly added drive
A physically installed or connected drive may need operating-system setup before files can be saved to it. If it already contains data, do not format it until you have confirmed that you do not need those files: formatting can remove access to existing contents. For a blank drive, initialize or format it when required by the operating system, then select the resulting volume in system or application settings.

The exact menus depend on the operating system, drive state, and whether the drive is new or contains a prior file system. The available model and vendor guidance does not establish one universal set of setup steps, so use the instructions for your operating system rather than applying a menu path intended for a different version or drive condition.
Common compatibility and installation mistakes
- Buying by “M.2” alone: Recheck protocol and length. M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe are not automatically interchangeable.
- Assuming every USB-C port is suitable: Confirm that the port supports data and check the connection capability on the mini PC and storage device or enclosure.
- Assuming every 2.5-inch drive fits: Check supported drive height, bay availability, and required cabling or mounting hardware for the exact model.
- Expecting another drive to expand C:: A second physical drive normally creates a separate volume. If the goal is a larger boot volume, plan for a supported boot-drive replacement and migration.
- Formatting a drive without checking it: Determine whether it contains needed files before initializing or formatting it.
- Opening the chassis without a backup or service instructions: Protect important data first and follow the computer maker’s power-down and access procedure.
- Assuming a listed capacity is universal: A stated limit belongs to the specific model and configuration whose manufacturer published it.
How to decide among the options
Use the intended job to narrow the choice, then verify compatibility. For working files that should stay inside the computer, a free supported M.2 slot or 2.5-inch bay may suit. For a drive you want to connect without opening the case, consider external storage. For several drives and a large library, a DAS enclosure may be more appropriate than a single external drive.
- Need more room for apps or project files? Decide whether a separate data volume is acceptable. If so, an added internal or external drive may work; check whether the applications you use support storing data or installations there.
- Need more space on the Windows boot volume? Adding a second drive alone does not do this. Check whether the existing boot drive can be replaced and plan a backup plus supported migration or fresh installation.
- Want to avoid opening the mini PC? Check for a data-capable USB connection and match the drive or enclosure to that connection.
- Need storage for a large media collection? Compare a single drive with a multi-bay DAS by supported drive types, bay count, connection, cooling, acoustics, and budget.
- Comparing cost or expected speed? Check current local prices and the manufacturers’ specifications for the exact drive, port, and enclosure. The available guidance does not establish a universal throughput figure or current price comparison.
The most reliable order is to identify the exact mini PC, decide whether the job is adding a data volume or replacing the boot drive, and only then compare capacity, interface, installation effort, portability, and cost. This avoids buying a drive that cannot connect or solve the storage problem you actually have.
