To use Starknet, install a wallet that supports Starknet—Starknet’s own wallet materials highlight Argent and Braavos—then create or import an account, unlock the wallet’s network selector, and choose the required Starknet network (usually mainnet or a named testnet). Confirm the network shown in the wallet before connecting a decentralized application (dApp) or signing anything. Do not add Starknet to MetaMask as a conventional EVM custom RPC: MetaMask does not natively support Starknet, although Starknet’s getting-started guide describes a Starknet Snap route.
1. Choose a wallet that actually supports Starknet
Starknet accounts use Starknet’s own account model, so wallet compatibility matters. The official Starknet ecosystem guide lists Argent and Braavos as wallet options. Both are designed to create and manage Starknet accounts rather than treating Starknet as an ordinary Ethereum-compatible network entry.
Argent and Braavos are the documented starting points
Either wallet can be a reasonable starting point, but the available platforms, security features, recovery process, supported dApps, and setup screens can change. The sources available for this guide do not establish a current feature-by-feature winner. Use the wallet’s current official download page and install only the extension or mobile application published through an official channel.

Why MetaMask is different
MetaMask does not natively support Starknet as an ordinary EVM network. Adding a Starknet RPC URL in MetaMask’s usual “custom network” form is therefore not the correct procedure. Starknet’s getting-started documentation describes a Starknet Snap as an alternative MetaMask route. A Snap-based flow has its own installation and approval prompts; follow the current instructions from the Starknet or Snap provider rather than copying EVM network settings.

2. Install the wallet and create or import your account
The exact screens differ between Argent, Braavos, and their browser or mobile versions. The sequence below describes the decisions you need to make without assuming a particular button label.
- Obtain the wallet from an official source. Check the publisher name, application identity, and permissions before installing. Avoid search-ad advertisements, unofficial browser extensions, and links sent in private messages.
- Choose create or restore. Select the option to create a new Starknet account, or use the wallet’s restore/import path if you already have a compatible recovery phrase or key. Never paste a recovery phrase into a website, chat, support ticket, or form.
- Record the recovery phrase offline. Write the words down in the order displayed and store the record where others cannot photograph or copy it. Do not store the phrase in a screenshot, cloud note, email draft, or password manager unless you have deliberately accepted the additional exposure risk.
- Set the wallet’s local protection. Create the requested password, PIN, or biometric unlock. This protects the installation on that device; it is not a replacement for the recovery phrase.
- Complete any account-deployment prompt. A newly created Starknet account may need to be deployed on-chain before it can perform certain transactions. The wallet should explain whether deployment is required and what funding or approval is needed. Do not assume Argent and Braavos request deployment at the same point or charge the same amount.
- Write down the account address separately. Confirm the full address when copying it and keep a record of which wallet and network it belongs to. An address displayed on one network selector is not proof that a transaction was sent on another network.
If you are restoring an existing account, verify that the restored address matches a previously trusted address before moving assets. A successful restore of the wrong account is still the wrong account.
3. Understand Starknet mainnet and testnets before switching
A wallet can show the same account interface while pointing at different Starknet networks. Mainnet is the production network where transactions and assets have real value. A testnet is used for development and testing; its tokens are not a substitute for mainnet funds and may be distributed through test faucets or other test-only mechanisms.

- Use mainnet only when the dApp and the assets you intend to use are explicitly on mainnet.
- Use the exact testnet named by the tutorial or dApp; “testnet” is not always a single universal environment.
- Expect separate balances and transaction histories on different networks.
- Never infer a network from an address alone. Confirm the active network indicator and the dApp’s network notice.
4. Switch the wallet to the required Starknet network
Wallet interfaces change frequently, and the available sources do not establish a reliable, current click-by-click path for every Argent or Braavos release. The safe procedure is therefore based on the shared controls: the wallet’s network selector or network settings.
- Unlock the wallet. Open the browser extension or mobile app and authenticate locally.
- Open network settings or the network selector. Look for the control that displays the current network name, or for a settings area containing network choices. The exact label and position vary by wallet and device.
- Select the intended Starknet network. Choose mainnet or the specifically named testnet required for your task. If the network is absent, do not substitute a similarly named network; use the wallet’s current documentation or the dApp’s supported-wallet instructions.
- Approve the change. Some wallets ask you to confirm the switch. Read the network name in the confirmation prompt before accepting.
- Verify the result inside the wallet. After the selector closes, check that the active network indicator changed and that the account address and balance view belong to that network.
- Connect to the dApp only after verification. Reload the dApp if it was already open, choose its connect-wallet control, and approve only a request that names the network you selected.
Changing the selected network changes where subsequent dApp interactions are directed; it does not move tokens, deploy an account, or bridge assets. Those are separate operations.
5. Verify the network before signing or sending
StarkGate’s guidance emphasizes being on the correct mainnet or testnet, and supported wallets can vary by device. Make a short verification pause part of every transaction workflow.

6. Fund the account and handle deployment separately from network switching
You can switch a network with no funds at all. Funding becomes necessary only when the operation requires a balance—for example, paying transaction costs, deploying an account, or using a dApp.

Transfer from another compatible source
If you already hold assets on Starknet, send them to the exact Starknet account address shown by the wallet. Confirm that the sending service supports Starknet and that you selected the same network on both sides. A transfer sent on a different network may not appear in the balance you are viewing.
Use StarkGate when you need an Ethereum–Starknet bridge
StarkGate is documented as a bridge for ETH and ERC-20 tokens between Ethereum and Starknet. Bridging is optional funding context, not a prerequisite for opening the network selector or changing the active network. Before approving a bridge transaction, verify the source network, destination network, token contract, amount, recipient account, and any displayed waiting or finalization steps. Use the bridge’s current interface for the network pair you need; a Sepolia bridge page, for example, is for a test environment rather than mainnet funds.
Understand account deployment prompts
Starknet wallet setup can include deploying the account on-chain. Deployment timing is wallet-specific: one wallet may prompt during creation, while another may wait until the first transaction. Follow the current prompt, check which network is active, and confirm the funding requirement before signing. Do not treat a deployment prompt as evidence that the network switch failed.

7. Connect to a Starknet dApp after switching
- Open the dApp using a trusted address and check which Starknet network it announces.
- Set the wallet to that network before pressing the dApp’s connect control.
- Select your Starknet wallet when the wallet chooser appears.
- Review the connection request, including account address, network, and requested permissions.
- Approve only if every detail is expected. If the dApp reports a wrong network, stop and switch in the wallet rather than approving a prompt that you do not understand.
- For each transaction, inspect the recipient, token, amount, and network again. A previous approval does not make a later transaction safe automatically.
8. Troubleshoot common problems
The Starknet network is not listed
Confirm that you installed a Starknet-compatible wallet version and that you are viewing its Starknet account mode rather than an EVM-only account. Check the wallet’s current documentation for supported networks and device limitations. Do not invent an RPC entry or select a similarly named chain.

MetaMask shows no Starknet option
This is expected for native MetaMask support. MetaMask does not treat Starknet as a normal EVM custom network. Use a dedicated Starknet wallet, or follow the currently maintained Starknet Snap instructions if you specifically need a MetaMask-based workflow.
The dApp says “wrong network” after you switched
Read the dApp’s required network name exactly. Testnets are not interchangeable. Switch to that precise network, then refresh the dApp or disconnect and reconnect the wallet. If the required network is unavailable in the wallet, stop rather than signing on a substitute network.
The balance is empty after changing networks
Network balances are separate views. Confirm the account address, token type, and network used for the original deposit. If you bridged or transferred recently, check the sending transaction and the bridge’s status using its current interface. Do not repeat the transfer solely because the wallet view is empty.
The wallet asks for deployment
Read the deployment explanation and confirm the active network. Fund the account only through a route that explicitly supports that network, then approve the deployment if you understand the transaction and its required balance. A deployment requirement can be normal for a new account.

The wallet and dApp show different accounts
Compare the complete addresses, not shortened prefixes. Disconnect the dApp, select the intended account in the wallet, verify the network, and reconnect. If the address still differs, do not sign or send funds.
A bridge or transfer is pending
Record the transaction identifier, confirm that you are checking the correct source and destination networks, and use the bridge or wallet’s current status information. Avoid submitting a duplicate transaction until you know whether the original is finalized, failed, or awaiting a required step.
9. Security checklist for Starknet wallet use
- Install only from an official wallet distribution channel.
- Keep the recovery phrase offline and private; anyone who obtains it may control the account.
- Use a unique device password or PIN and keep the device’s operating system and browser updated.
- Verify the full account address and active network before every transfer, bridge approval, and signature.
- Reject unsolicited “support” requests asking for the recovery phrase, private key, or remote access.
- Test a new transfer with a small amount when the destination and network are unfamiliar.
- Remember that testnet tokens and mainnet tokens are different environments; never assume a testnet balance has monetary value.
- Disconnect dApps you no longer use and review wallet permissions where the wallet provides that control.
10. What you should remember
The reliable workflow is: choose a Starknet-compatible wallet, protect its recovery information, complete any wallet-specific account deployment, select the exact mainnet or testnet required, verify the network and address, and only then connect to a dApp or move assets. Argent and Braavos are the official ecosystem’s prominent wallet choices in the available guidance. MetaMask requires a Starknet Snap-style route rather than an ordinary EVM custom network. StarkGate can help move ETH or ERC-20 tokens between Ethereum and Starknet, but bridging and network switching remain separate actions.
