To add a resource to a RedM server, place its folder in the server’s resources directory, confirm that the folder contains a current fxmanifest.lua, add ensure <folder_name> to server.cfg, put any dependencies earlier in the file, then perform a full restart and read the console. The same rules apply whether you upload files manually or use a hosting control panel.
What a RedM resource is
A resource is a packaged RedM feature: a script, map, user interface, framework component, database wrapper, or shared library. RedM discovers resources as folders inside the server’s resources directory. The folder is not loaded merely because it exists there; the server must also be instructed to start it from server.cfg.

Every resource needs a manifest. The manifest tells the server which files belong to the resource, which game it targets, and which version of the resource system it expects. For current RedM resources, that manifest is normally named fxmanifest.lua.
Before you install anything
Get the correct server access
You need access to the server files and to server.cfg. A hosted server may provide a web file manager, an upload-and-extract control, or FTP/SFTP access. A self-managed server requires access to the directory where the RedM server artifacts and configuration files are stored.

Back up the configuration
Save a copy of server.cfg before editing it. Keep the original resource archive as well, so you can restore the package if an update replaces files or introduces a configuration error.
Inspect the download before uploading
- Look for a top-level resource folder rather than a documentation-only archive.
- Check that the resource folder contains
fxmanifest.lua. If it contains only an older__resource.lua, treat that as an outdated package and check its documentation before using it. - Read the package’s dependency list. Frameworks, database wrappers, and shared libraries must be available and started before scripts that use them.
- Note the exact folder name, including capitalization. You will copy that spelling into
server.cfg.
Choose an upload method

Both methods produce the same result: one resource folder inside resources, with its manifest directly inside that folder. Bracketed group folders such as [core] and [scripts] are commonly used to organize resources; the server scans those groups automatically. The name you place in ensure is still the actual resource folder name, not the name of the bracketed group.
Install the resource step by step
1. Place the resource folder in the resources directory
- Open the server’s
resourcesdirectory. - Upload the resource folder, or upload its ZIP archive and extract it there through the control panel.
- Open the resulting folder and confirm that
fxmanifest.luais inside it. - Check for accidental nesting. A common packaging mistake is
resources/resource-name/resource-name/fxmanifest.lua; the loadable folder is the one that contains the manifest, so move that folder up one level if necessary.
Keep the folder name unchanged unless you also intend to change every configuration reference to it. RedM treats the name used in configuration as case-sensitive.
2. Validate the manifest
Open fxmanifest.lua in a text editor. A RedM manifest identifies the game as rdr3 and includes an fx_version declaration. The Cfx.re documentation states that fx_version is mandatory for RedM.

game 'rdr3'The snippet above is a common shape for a RedM manifest, not a complete manifest for every resource. The resource author’s file may also declare client scripts, server scripts, shared scripts, files, data files, or dependencies. Do not delete those declarations while changing the game target.

Older RedM repositories may contain an rdr3_warning line left over from the platform’s prerelease period. Do not copy that legacy line into a new resource unless the current resource documentation specifically requires it. Likewise, CfxLua now uses Lua 5.4 and the lua54 manifest switch is deprecated; adding it to a new manifest is unnecessary.

3. Add the resource to server.cfg
Open server.cfg and add an ensure line containing the exact resource folder name:
ensure resource-nameReplace resource-name with the folder name that contains fxmanifest.lua. The name is case-sensitive, so ensure MyResource and ensure myresource are different references. Do not include the ZIP filename, a path such as resources/, or the name of a surrounding bracket group.

You can place the line near related resources, but its position matters because resources start in the order their ensure lines appear.
4. Put dependencies first
A resource that calls a framework, database wrapper, or shared library cannot reliably start before that dependency. Put each prerequisite earlier in server.cfg, then place the script that consumes it below those lines.

ensure my-redm-scriptThe names in this example are placeholders for the actual folders supplied by your resource packages. If the resource documentation lists a required dependency, install that dependency as a separate resource and use its exact folder name in its own ensure line.
Dependency order is not a substitute for installing the dependency. If the required folder is absent, misspelled, or has its own manifest error, moving lines around will not fix the failure.

5. Save and perform a full restart
- Save
server.cfg. - Stop the RedM server completely rather than relying on a partial reload.
- Start the server again with the normal launch method supplied by your host or operating system.
- Watch the startup console until the resource has either started or reported an error.
A full restart catches packaging and dependency problems that a hot reload can hide. The console normally identifies the failing resource and gives a useful cause, such as a missing dependency or a Lua file and line number.

Successful startup
A successful start should show the resource being discovered and started without an error associated with its name. If the resource has an in-game command or visible feature, test that feature after the server finishes starting; a startup message alone does not prove that every function works.
Manifest or packaging errors
If the console says that no valid manifest was found, inspect the folder layout first. The manifest must be named exactly fxmanifest.lua and must be in the resource’s top-level folder. A ZIP left unextracted, a double-nested folder, or a typo such as fx-manifest.lua prevents detection.
Dependency errors
If the console names a missing resource, install that dependency, confirm its folder name, and place its ensure line before the dependent resource. If the dependency is present but fails first, fix that earlier failure before troubleshooting the script that uses it.

Lua syntax errors
A syntax error normally includes the affected Lua file and line number. Open that exact file and line, restore the original package if you edited it, and check whether the downloaded version is compatible with the server build and its stated dependencies. Avoid deleting lines at random: a change that removes one syntax error can create a different runtime failure.

Hosted panels versus manual servers
Hosting interfaces change the file-transfer step, not the RedM loading model. In both environments you still need the same three conditions: a correctly placed folder, a valid manifest, and a matching ensure entry.
- Control panel: Use its upload and extract controls, then verify the resulting directory visually. Some panels extract beside the archive; others create a folder named after the archive.
- Manual file access: Extract locally or on the server, transfer the resource folder, and confirm permissions and the final path using the tools available on that machine.
- Either method: Edit the actual
server.cfgused by the running instance. A server can have multiple configuration files, and changing an unused copy has no effect.
Safe checklist for every resource
- Read the resource’s installation notes and dependency list.
- Back up
server.cfg. - Place the extracted folder in
resourcesor a scanned bracket group. - Confirm that
fxmanifest.luais directly inside that folder. - Confirm the manifest targets RedM with
game 'rdr3'when it is a RedM-only resource. - Copy the exact, case-sensitive folder name into an
ensureline. - Put framework, database, and shared-library dependencies earlier in the file.
- Save the configuration and perform a full restart.
- Read the console and resolve the first reported failure before investigating later symptoms.
What not to change casually
Do not rename a resource folder without updating every configuration reference that uses its old name. Do not remove manifest declarations simply because the file looks unfamiliar, and do not add deprecated switches such as lua54 to modern packages. If a resource requires a particular manifest value, dependency, or load order, follow that resource’s own documentation rather than replacing its settings with a generic example.
Why the console is the final authority during installation
Folder placement and configuration can be checked before launch, but only the running server can reveal whether the complete dependency chain and Lua files load together. The startup console connects a failure to a resource name, missing dependency, manifest problem, or file-and-line syntax error. Capture that first error when asking for support; later messages are often consequences of the original failure.

Cfx.re’s resource documentation covers RedM alongside FiveM and supplies the manifest rules, including rdr3, the required fx_version declaration, the multi-game syntax, and the deprecation of older manifest conventions. Hosting-panel screens and exact current fx_version choices can vary, so use the resource’s release notes and the current Cfx.re documentation when a package specifies a value not shown in this guide.
