To add a widget, touch and hold an empty area of your Android Home screen, tap Widgets, choose an app, then touch and hold a widget preview and drag it onto a Home-screen panel. To resize it later, touch and hold the widget and drag the resize dots that appear. If no dots appear, that widget or your launcher does not support user resizing.
You can move a widget by dragging it, remove it from the Home screen by dragging it to Remove, and leave the app installed. Widget choices and controls come from each app and can differ with your Android version, phone manufacturer, and launcher. The Google Search bar has a separate customization screen in the Google app.
What an Android widget is—and why the controls differ
A widget is an app-provided component that places live information or controls on a Home-screen panel. A clock, calendar agenda, weather panel, music controls, note list, or search bar can all be widgets. Unlike an app icon, a widget may show content without opening the app, and some widgets support scrolling or direct controls.

Installing an app does not guarantee a particular widget style, size, or set of controls. The launcher—the software that manages your Home screen—also determines which gestures and resize behavior are available. Android version and phone maker can change menu labels and appearance, so a path described here may look slightly different on another handset.

How to add a widget to an Android Home screen
Use the Home-screen Widgets menu
- Go to the Home screen panel where you want the widget, or plan to move it there after placing it.
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen. Do not press an app icon or an existing widget.
- Tap Widgets.
- Scroll through the list, or tap an app name to see the widget designs that app provides. A single app may offer several shapes and information layouts.
- Touch and hold the desired widget preview. Android displays your Home-screen panels while you continue holding it.
- Drag the widget to an open position and lift your finger. If the panel is full, drag toward the left or right edge to move to another panel before releasing.
The widget is now an independent Home-screen item. Moving or removing it later does not uninstall the app that supplied it.
Open an app’s widgets from its icon
Some launchers expose an app’s widgets directly from its icon. Touch and hold the app icon, then tap Widgets if that option appears. Touch and hold a preview and drag it to the desired Home-screen position. If the icon menu has no Widgets entry, use the Home-screen long-press method instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose the right panel and position
Before releasing the widget, watch the placement outline. Other icons and widgets may shift to make room, but a panel with no available grid space will not accept the item. A smaller design is useful when you need a quick glance and want to preserve space for app icons. A wider or taller design can expose more content or controls, provided the app and launcher offer that size.

How to resize a widget
Check whether resizing is supported
- Touch and hold the widget already on your Home screen.
- Lift your finger without dragging it away. If resizing is available, an outline appears around the widget with dots or handles on its sides.
- Drag a side handle to make the widget wider or narrower. If handles appear on the top or bottom, drag those to change its height.
- Tap outside the widget to apply the new dimensions.
No dots or handles means that the widget, the launcher, or both do not offer user resizing. It is not a hidden setting you can enable from the standard Android widget menu. Return to the widget list and check whether the same app offers another design with a different fixed size.
What a larger or smaller size changes
Resizing changes the space reserved on the grid; it does not change the app’s underlying data. A compact widget may show one key value or a single row. A larger version can display additional rows, buttons, or a broader dashboard when the app has implemented those layouts. Google’s Android 12 guidance describes this as a way for larger widgets to expose more functionality.
After resizing, inspect the content rather than assuming every extra cell is useful. A calendar may reveal more appointments, while a search or shortcut widget may simply occupy more space. If the widget snaps back to its previous size, that is evidence that the implementation or launcher has a fixed size or minimum and maximum dimensions.

Move it to another Home-screen panel
Touch and hold the widget and drag it to the left or right edge. Keep holding until the next panel appears, then position it and lift your finger. This lets you place glanceable information on a primary panel while keeping larger dashboards on a secondary panel.
Remove the Home-screen item but keep the app
Touch and hold the widget and drag it to Remove, then release. Remove deletes only that widget instance from the Home screen. The app, its data, and any other widgets remain on the phone. Choose Uninstall only when you intend to remove the app itself. The labels can be close together, so read the destination before letting go.
Customize the Google Search widget
The Google Search bar has controls in the Google app rather than only in the launcher’s widget picker. First add the Search widget to the Home screen using the steps above. Then:
- Open the Google app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings.
- Tap Search widget.
- Select Customize widget.
Use the controls shown there to adjust the options available on your device, such as the bar’s visual treatment and other displayed elements. The exact look and available controls can vary between Android versions and devices. If you do not see Search widget, confirm that you are in the Google app rather than the launcher’s general settings, and check whether your device uses a manufacturer-specific Search widget.

Android version, manufacturer, and launcher differences
Android 14 and newer versus earlier releases
Google’s current support instructions include the explicit qualification that some steps work only on Android 14 and up. On an earlier version, the long-press gesture may open a different edit screen, or a launcher may place widget controls under a separate menu. The underlying concepts remain the same: open the widget picker, choose an app-provided design, place it, and use handles only when they are displayed.
Android 12 and Material You
Android 12 introduced redesigned widgets associated with Material You. Google wrote on October 28, 2021, that widgets can be resized and that larger sizes can expose more functionality. On select Android 12 devices, including Pixel 3 or later, widgets can dynamically change color as they move over the chosen wallpaper. This behavior depends on the device and widget implementation; it is not a universal setting for every widget or phone.
Launcher-specific behavior
The same app can present different placement grids, resize handles, or edit menus in different launchers. If a tutorial’s wording does not match your screen, look for the equivalent action after touching and holding an empty Home-screen area or the widget itself. Do not infer that a missing control is broken until you have checked whether the launcher supports that action.
Choosing among widget designs
When an app offers several previews, compare them by the job you want the Home screen to perform rather than by appearance alone.

| Decision factor | What to inspect | Useful choice |
|---|---|---|
| Information density | How much content is visible without opening the app | Use a compact design for one-value glances; choose a larger panel for several rows or a dashboard. |
| Resize support | Whether handles appear after placement | Choose a design that exposes handles if you need to tailor width or height. A fixed-size design cannot be forced to resize. |
| Interaction depth | Tap-only access versus scrolling or on-widget controls | Use a simple shortcut for fast launching; use a larger interactive design when you need to browse or control content from the Home screen. |
| Visual customization | Available colors, themes, and layout choices | Use the app’s own customization screen when one exists, as with the Google Search widget. |
| Refresh behavior | How often the app updates information and what data connection it requires | Check the app’s settings and permissions. Refresh timing is implemented by each app, not guaranteed by the widget picker. |
| Compatibility | Android version, phone manufacturer, and launcher behavior | Prefer a design that appears in your device’s own widget list and test its controls after placement. |
Troubleshooting common widget problems
The app is installed, but no widget appears
- Open the Home-screen widget picker and tap the app’s name; some apps group several designs under one entry.
- Confirm that you installed the app that actually supplies the widget. A related companion app may provide a different set of designs.
- Try the app-icon method: touch and hold the icon and look for Widgets.
- Check the Android version and launcher. An app can be installed while its widget is unavailable on a particular release or launcher.
The widget cannot be resized
- Touch and hold it, then lift your finger. Resizing requires visible dots or handles.
- If none appear, try another preview from the same app; designs can have different fixed dimensions.
- Do not confuse dragging the widget with resizing it. Dragging the body changes position, while dragging the handles changes dimensions.
- If a launcher limits the grid or the app declares a fixed size, there is no standard Android switch that overrides that limit.
There is no room to place the widget
- Drag it toward another Home-screen panel and wait for that panel to appear.
- Remove or move an existing icon or widget to create a contiguous open area.
- Choose a smaller design from the app’s widget list if the current preview exceeds the available grid.
The widget disappeared after you removed it
Remove deletes the Home-screen instance, not the app. Add it again from the widget picker. If the app itself was uninstalled, reinstalling it is required before its widgets can be added again.
The appearance does not match a tutorial
Compare the Android release, phone manufacturer, and launcher used in the tutorial with your device. Android 12 Material You styling, later Android changes, and manufacturer launchers can alter colors, previews, labels, and available handles. For the Search bar, use the Google app’s Settings > Search widget > Customize widget path instead of expecting every control in the Home-screen edit menu.
The widget shows less information than expected
Resize it if handles are available, then check whether the larger layout reveals additional rows or controls. If the content does not change, the app may use a fixed layout or reserve the extra space for visual padding. Open the app for the complete view; a widget is only the interface the app has chosen to expose on the Home screen.

A practical setup sequence
- Decide what you need at a glance: a single value, a list, or interactive controls.
- Open the widget picker and tap the relevant app to compare its previews.
- Place the smallest design that delivers the needed information, leaving room for normal icons and gestures.
- Touch and hold the placed widget to test for resize handles. Adjust only if handles are present.
- Move the widget to the panel where you will actually use it; drag to another panel if the primary panel becomes crowded.
- For the Google Search bar, finish visual adjustments in the Google app’s Search widget settings.
- If a control is missing, record the Android version, phone maker, and launcher before troubleshooting; those three details explain many differences.
These steps let you tailor the Home screen without deleting apps: add the app-provided design you need, resize only supported widgets, and use Remove when you want to clean up the layout while keeping the underlying app.
