Start with the mini PC’s exact manufacturer, model number, and revision—not just its brand or case design. That identifier determines whether RAM is replaceable, which SO-DIMM specification the system accepts, whether storage can be added or must replace an existing drive, and which M.2 length and interface fit. Find the matching specification sheet and service manual before buying anything.
Mini PCs do not share one universal upgrade standard. The checks below show how to establish compatibility, prepare for service, install components safely, and verify the result without assuming that another model in the same product family uses the same parts.
1. Identify the exact mini PC before shopping
Read the model label on the underside or rear of the computer, or use the operating system’s system-information panel. Record the complete model designation, generation or revision, and any configuration suffix. A family name alone is insufficient: two visually similar systems can use different memory generations, M.2 lengths, slot counts, or motherboard layouts.
Find the authoritative documents
- Search the manufacturer’s support site for the complete model identifier.
- Open the technical specifications page for that exact configuration.
- Download the service or maintenance manual, not only a marketing overview.
- Check any qualified-vendor or compatibility list supplied for memory and storage.
- Note regional or configuration differences, because a model sold with one processor or memory type may have different limits from another revision.
Do not infer compatibility from a retailer listing, a forum post, a similar enclosure, or a component that worked in another mini PC. Use those sources only as leads, then confirm every specification against the manufacturer’s documentation for your machine.

2. Determine whether the RAM can be upgraded
Socketed memory versus integrated memory
Open the documentation first to see whether the computer has removable SO-DIMM sockets. Some mini PCs use one or two sockets; others solder memory directly to the board. Integrated memory cannot be removed or expanded by inserting a module.
Apple’s Mac mini support information, for example, separates generations with integrated memory that cannot be upgraded from models with different installation requirements. That is a model-family example, not a rule for every mini PC. Your exact manual controls.
Record every RAM requirement
Write down these values before selecting a module:
- Module form factor, normally SO-DIMM in compact computers, but verify it.
- Memory generation, such as DDR4 or another generation specified by the maker. Different generations are not interchangeable.
- Number of physical sockets and how many are already occupied.
- Maximum total memory and maximum capacity per socket.
- Supported operating speed, not merely the speed printed on a module.
- Voltage, rank, density, and channel or configuration requirements when the manual or qualified list specifies them.
- Whether the manufacturer lists a particular module or kit as qualified.
Rated speed is not guaranteed operating speed
A memory listing can advertise a higher rated speed than the mini PC will actually use. ASUS’s qualified-memory list for the PN51-S1 includes a module rated at 3200 while identifying 2666 as the supported speed in that system. The module’s label therefore does not establish the computer’s operating frequency. Use the PC’s documented supported speed and expect the system to run at the limit its firmware and processor support.

Do not assume that installing two modules automatically doubles the supported capacity. A board may have two sockets but a lower total limit, or it may accept different maximum capacities per socket. A Crucial compatibility listing for the HP Elite Mini 600 G9 (DDR4), accessed in 2026, identifies a 64GB maximum; that figure applies to that listed system, not to mini PCs generally.

3. Map the storage design before opening the case
Decide whether you are adding or replacing a drive
Determine whether an empty connector or bay exists. If the machine has an available slot, a second drive may be added; if it has only one slot, upgrading storage means replacing the existing drive. Some systems also combine a 2.5-inch bay with an M.2 connector, while others provide only one M.2 position. The service manual should show the board layout and supported combinations.
Check M.2 length and interface separately
M.2 describes a physical card format, not one universal protocol. Confirm the slot’s supported length, keying, interface, and protocol, such as PCIe NVMe or SATA, plus any capacity limit and clearance around the card.
| Documented example | What it establishes | Why it cannot be generalized |
|---|---|---|
| HP Elite Mini 600 G9 (DDR4), Crucial compatibility listing accessed 2026 | Two M.2 2280 slots and PCIe Gen4 x4 capability; the same listing identifies a 64GB memory maximum. | Those dimensions, interface, and capacity apply to the listed model and configuration only. |
| ASUS PB60S user manual, published 2018 | Describes installation of an M.2 2242 SSD. | A 2242 requirement is not interchangeable with a 2280 slot, and the manual does not establish compatibility for other ASUS models. |
A drive can be electrically compatible yet physically too long, or the correct length but use an unsupported protocol. Treat length, interface, keying, capacity, and screw position as separate checks.

Check the existing drive and data plan
Before removing a boot drive, decide how its files and operating system will be preserved. Back up personal data to a separate destination. For cloning, migration, encryption, and recovery-media instructions, follow the computer maker’s documentation and the operating system’s recovery guidance; there is no single process that applies to every mini PC.

4. Read the service procedure and prepare safely
Follow model-specific disassembly instructions
Screw locations, bottom-cover clips, antenna cables, drive brackets, and board shields vary widely. The exact manual should identify the cover-removal sequence and any cable that must be disconnected. Never force a panel because another model opened differently.
The ASUS PB60S manual recommends professional supervision for upgrades and describes grounded static precautions. Apple recommends an anti-static wrist strap for memory work on Mac mini. These are manufacturer-specific instructions; use the precautions stated for your own computer and seek qualified service when the maker advises it.
Prepare a controlled workspace
- Shut down completely, disconnect the power adapter and peripherals, and wait for the system to cool.
- Use a clean, stable, non-carpeted work surface and keep screws organized by location.
- Use the screwdriver size specified by the service instructions.
- Control static with the method recommended by the manufacturer; an anti-static wrist strap is an optional aid when the manual calls for or supports one.
- Handle modules and drives by their edges, never by contacts or components.
- Photograph cable routing before disconnecting anything that the manual permits you to remove.
5. Install or replace RAM
- Confirm the exact module specification against the machine’s qualified list or manual immediately before opening the case.
- Power down, unplug the mini PC, and open the cover using the documented sequence.
- Locate the SO-DIMM socket. If replacing a module, release the side latches and slide the old module out by its edges.
- Align the new module’s notch with the socket key. The notch prevents insertion in the wrong orientation; do not force it.
- Insert the module at the angle shown in the manual, then press it down until both retaining clips engage.
- If installing two modules, follow the manual’s recommended socket order and pair requirements.
- Inspect the latches and module alignment, reconnect any documented cables, and close the case before reconnecting power.
If the computer fails to start, powers on and off repeatedly, or reports less memory than expected, shut it down and reseat the module. Recheck generation, capacity, voltage, socket order, and the system’s documented maximum before trying another part.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems6. Install or replace an M.2 SSD
- Verify the slot’s length, keying, interface or protocol, supported capacity, and clearance from the exact manual.
- Back up data and prepare the operating-system recovery or migration method before removing a boot drive.
- Open the case and locate the documented M.2 socket and retaining screw or bracket.
- Remove the retaining screw, if present, and insert the SSD into the socket at the specified angle.
- Press the free end down onto the standoff and secure it with the correct screw. Do not bend the card or overtighten the fastener.
- If the computer has an existing drive, follow the manual’s instructions for moving any thermal pad, shield, bracket, or cable.
- Close the case, reconnect power, and use the manufacturer’s recovery, cloning, or operating-system installation procedure as appropriate.
When adding a second drive, check in advance whether the system needs a bracket, cable, thermal pad, or firmware setting. When replacing the only drive, the hardware installation alone will not restore your files or operating system.

7. Verify recognition after the upgrade
Check memory
Enter the firmware setup if the model provides a memory summary, or use the operating system’s system-information tool. Confirm that the installed total matches the module configuration and that no warning appears. The exact menu path differs by manufacturer and operating system, so use the model’s support instructions rather than a generic key combination.
Check storage
Confirm that the new SSD appears in firmware or the operating system’s disk utility before relying on it. A newly installed blank drive may need initialization, partitioning, formatting, or an operating-system installation according to the platform’s documentation. If replacing a boot drive, verify that the recovery or cloned environment starts and that important files open.
8. Troubleshoot by symptom
The mini PC does not power on or repeatedly restarts
- Disconnect power and reseat the RAM, checking notch alignment and both retaining clips.
- Test one module at a time only if the manual permits that diagnostic approach.
- Recheck that the module generation, voltage, capacity, and supported speed match the exact model.
- Inspect for a cable left disconnected during reassembly.
- Stop and seek professional service if the manual warns against user replacement or if physical damage is visible.
Less RAM is reported than expected
- Check whether part of memory is reserved by integrated graphics or other firmware functions.
- Confirm the system’s maximum total and per-slot limits; two sockets do not prove that every capacity combination works.
- Verify that both modules are fully latched and that the operating system is reporting the same amount as firmware.
The SSD is absent
- Confirm that the drive’s length and keying match the slot and that the protocol is supported.
- Reseat the card and reinstall the retaining screw without overtightening.
- Check whether the slot is disabled when another connector or bay is populated, as specified by the manual.
- Look for a required firmware setting, bracket, cable, or thermal component.
- Test the drive in the documented supported configuration; do not assume that a drive working in another computer will work in this one.
The system sees the SSD but cannot boot
Restore the operating system or apply the documented cloning and boot-configuration procedure. Confirm that the new drive contains a valid system installation and that firmware boot settings match the installation mode. Use the computer maker’s recovery documentation and the operating system’s instructions for the exact platform.

When two modules appear similar, compare all of these fields rather than choosing the larger number printed on the package:
| Comparison field | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Form factor | Is it the exact module size and socket type required by the mini PC? |
| Memory generation | Does it match the generation specified for the board? |
| Capacity | Does each module stay within the per-slot limit, and does the total stay within the system limit? |
| Operating speed | Is the speed supported by this computer, rather than merely rated on the module? |
| Voltage and configuration | Do rank, density, voltage, and pairing requirements match the documentation? |
| Qualified-list status | Is the exact part or an explicitly equivalent specification listed by the manufacturer or a qualified vendor? |
The available model evidence does not support a universal recommendation for a particular capacity or speed. The compatible specification for your computer is the deciding factor.
Quick Recap
10. Compare storage choices correctly
| Comparison field | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Slot availability | Is there an empty connector, or must the existing drive be replaced? |
| Physical length | Does the card match the documented 2242, 2280, or other length and standoff position? |
| Interface and protocol | Does the slot support the drive’s PCIe/NVMe or SATA interface and stated generation? |
| Capacity support | Does the manual or qualified list state a limit for this model? |
| Installation hardware | Are a screw, bracket, cable, thermal pad, or shield required? |
| Data handling | Will you add a data volume, clone the old boot drive, or reinstall the operating system? |
