Put the escape sequence n inside the quoted server.description value. Use nn wherever you want a blank line between paragraphs. Keep the complete value on one physical configuration line; pressing Enter inside the quotes creates a real newline in the configuration file and can break parsing.
server.description "Welcome to our vanilla server.nnWipes every Thursday.nNo VIP pay-to-win."After saving, apply the setting with server.readcfg when your host supports that command, or use the hosting panel’s save-and-restart workflow. Then reopen the server information view and confirm that the line breaks are rendered.

What server.description controls
server.description is the text shown in Rust’s server connection or information view. Facepunch’s server guide describes +server.description as the “Description shown on server connection window.” The value is parsed as one quoted setting, so the visible paragraph breaks are represented by escape sequences rather than physical line breaks in the file.
This distinction explains why pressing Enter usually causes trouble. The configuration parser expects the quoted value to remain on one line. A backslash followed by a lowercase n is interpreted when the description is displayed, producing a line break for players.

Use the correct escape sequence
One new line
Insert n at the point where the next line should begin:
server.description "Welcome to our vanilla server.nWipes every Thursday."The two sentences appear on separate lines in the server information view, while the configuration entry itself remains one physical line.
A blank line between paragraphs
Use two consecutive escape sequences, nn, to leave an empty line between blocks of text:
server.description "Welcome to our vanilla server.nnWipes every Thursday.nNo VIP pay-to-win."The first sentence forms its own paragraph, followed by a blank line, then the wipe and rule information on subsequent lines.
Keep the characters literal
Type a backslash and the letter n. Do not replace them with an actual line break, a forward slash, or an uppercase N. The maintained Rust configuration example specifically documents n as the notation for a new line.

Step-by-step: edit a self-hosted server.cfg
- Stop editing in the right place. Open the active Rust server’s
server.cfg, or identify the startup command that suppliesserver.description. If you run more than one server identity, make sure you are changing the configuration used by the identity players actually join. - Write one quoted value. Begin with
server.description, add a space, and place the entire description inside one pair of quotation marks. Keep the value on one physical line in the file. - Mark each visual break. Add
nfor an ordinary line break andnnbetween paragraphs. Do not press Enter inside the quoted value. - Check the quotes and slashes. The opening and closing quotation marks must both be present. Each intended break must contain a backslash immediately followed by lowercase
n. - Save the file. The current ConVar reference states that the setting persists in
server.cfgand applies at runtime. The line break is stored as the two-character escape sequence inside the quoted value, not as a real newline. - Reload the configuration. At a host that supports it, run
server.readcfgfrom the server console. That command reloads the configuration without requiring a full restart. If your setup does not expose the command, use the panel’s documented save/restart process. - Verify in the client-facing view. Reopen the server information or connection window and look for the expected breaks. Test from a fresh server-list or information view rather than relying only on the text in your editor.
Editing a startup command or hosting panel
Some administrators do not edit a file directly. A launch command, control panel field, or environment-specific configuration may set server.description instead. The syntax is unchanged: supply one quoted value and put the literal n escape where the displayed text should move down.

Startup command
When the description is supplied as a startup argument, keep the argument’s value together and preserve the quotation marks required by your shell or launcher. A conceptual value looks like this:
+server.description "Welcome to our vanilla server.nnWipes every Thursday."The exact surrounding command depends on your launcher. Do not add a physical newline merely to make a long command easier to read unless the launcher explicitly supports continuation syntax; the description value itself still needs to be one quoted setting.
Control panel field
In a panel, enter the same literal characters in the field that maps to server.description:
Welcome to our vanilla server.nnWipes every Thursday.nNo VIP pay-to-win.Save the setting, then follow the panel’s apply, reload, or restart action. Panels differ in whether they expose server.readcfg, so use that command only when the host documents console access and support for it.

Formatting patterns that work well
Decide what each line is for before writing the final value. A short, predictable layout is easier to scan in the server browser’s information view than a single dense block.

Keep the content factual and current. Useful material includes the wipe schedule, rates, rules, region, Discord or community details, and support instructions. If a schedule changes, update the description at the same time as the server configuration so players do not rely on stale information.
Description text versus browser tags
Use prose in server.description and use server.tags for discovery filters. Facepunch lists tags such as weekly, monthly, vanilla, pve, roleplay, and creative, along with region values such as NA, EU, and OC. Tags are configured as a comma-separated server.tags value.
server.tags "weekly,vanilla,pve,EU"Do not try to create browser filters by placing tag words or comma-separated values in the description. Players may read those words, but the server browser uses the separate tags setting for filtering.
Applying changes without losing them
When server.readcfg is available
- Save the edited
server.cfgor the panel field that writes it. - Open the Rust server console provided by your host.
- Run
server.readcfg. - Wait for the reload to complete, then reopen the server information view.
The hosting documentation cited for this procedure describes server.readcfg as a way to update the server without a restart. Whether it is exposed depends on the host and panel.

When a restart is required
If the command is unavailable, use the panel’s save-and-restart workflow or restart the dedicated server through your normal administration process. Avoid editing a file while a panel is simultaneously rewriting it; save through the system that owns the active configuration, then restart or reload through that same system.
When the change appears to revert
If the description returns to its old text after a restart, the running instance may be loading a different server.cfg, a startup argument may be overriding the file, or the panel may maintain its own field. Confirm which source sets server.description, update that source, and apply the change again.

The description stays on one line
- Confirm that every intended break is written as a backslash followed by lowercase
n:n. - For a paragraph gap, use two escapes with no physical newline between them:
nn. - Make sure the value is enclosed in balanced quotation marks.
- Reload with
server.readcfgwhere supported, or perform the host panel’s required restart. - Reopen the server information view after the reload; an already-open view may still show the previous text.
Pressing Enter breaks the configuration
A real newline inside the quoted value changes the configuration’s structure. Remove the physical line break, place the entire value on one line, and insert n at that position instead. Save the corrected line before reloading.
Only part of the description appears
Check for an early closing quotation mark. A quote inside the text can terminate the value before the rest of the description is read. Keep the opening and closing delimiters paired and verify that the active configuration contains the complete text.
The updated text never appears
First verify that you edited the configuration for the server identity players are viewing. Then confirm that the save actually reached the active file or panel field, apply server.readcfg if available, and otherwise restart through the host. A successful edit to an inactive identity will not change the public server information.

Paragraph spacing looks different than expected
Use one escape for a single line transition and two for a blank line. Additional escapes create additional empty lines, so inspect the sequence carefully when spacing is excessive.
Design a description players can scan
Put the server identity first
Start with the server’s gameplay identity, such as vanilla survival, player-versus-environment, roleplay, or creative play. This gives a reader immediate context before operational details.
Separate schedule and rules
Place wipe timing and important rules in their own paragraph. A compact pattern is:
Vanilla survival.nnWipes every Thursday at 18:00 UTC.nNo VIP pay-to-win.nnCommunity support: join our Discord.The exact schedule, time zone, and community channel should match the server’s real operation. The escape sequences control presentation; they do not validate or update the facts you type.
Keep tags out of prose-only instructions
Describe what players need to know in the description and configure browser filters separately in server.tags. This keeps the information window readable while allowing players to find the server by its supported tags and region.
Self-hosted files versus managed hosting panels
The line-break syntax is the same in both arrangements. The practical difference is where you edit and how you apply the change.

Choose the editing path that owns the active configuration. Mixing a panel-managed field with a manually edited file can make one change overwrite the other.
