Godlike.Host offers hosted 7 Days to Die servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Install the 7 Days to Die build of Oxide/uMod that matches both your server operating system and current game build, copy it into the existing dedicated-server folder, then verify it with oxide.version. After that, place unchanged plugin .cs files in the server’s plugins directory and check the console for compilation results. Hosted panels may offer a one-click installer; with a local or remote server, you perform the same file replacement through the server folder, FTP, or a file manager.
What Oxide (uMod) does on a 7 Days to Die server
Oxide, distributed through the uMod project, is a server-side modding framework. It provides the hooks, plugin loader, permissions system, and console commands that allow C# plugins to extend a 7 Days to Die dedicated server without changing the game client for every player. Players normally connect with an unmodified client unless a particular plugin or mod has additional requirements.
The framework is tied to the game’s server build and to the operating system running that server. A package intended for Windows is not a substitute for the Linux build, and a framework compiled for an older game build can stop loading after a 7 Days to Die update. Treat the uMod 7 Days to Die download page as the compatibility authority each time you install or update.
Before you install
Confirm that you have a dedicated server
Oxide/uMod must be installed on the dedicated-server installation, not in a single-player save or in a client-only game directory. You need administrator or file-transfer access to the folder that contains the server executable and its existing data directories.

Identify the operating system and access method
- Windows self-hosted: you can stop the service and copy files directly into the server directory.
- Linux self-hosted: use the Linux-specific uMod package and copy it into the directory used by the Linux server process.
- Remote server: use FTP, SFTP, SSH-based file transfer, or the provider’s file manager, depending on what the provider supplies.
- Managed hosting: the control panel may have an “Install uMod,” “Install Oxide,” or similarly named action. Labels differ, so follow that panel’s instructions and confirm the result in the console.
Schedule downtime and make backups
Stop the server cleanly before replacing framework files. Back up the entire server directory if storage allows, and at minimum copy the world saves, server configuration, permissions data, and any existing oxide or umod directories. Keep the backup outside the live installation so an overwrite or failed update cannot destroy the only copy.
Check the game build
Record the current 7 Days to Die server build shown by your launcher, server manager, or provider panel. On the official uMod 7 Days to Die page, select the framework build whose notes match that game build and your operating system. Do not choose a package merely because it is the newest file in a download list.

Choose the correct uMod package
Open the official uMod page for 7 Days to Die and review the available Windows and Linux downloads. The page lists framework versions, game-build notes, and separate Linux guidance. “Download the version specific to your game” is the practical rule: compatibility is more important than the package’s publication date.

Download the archive to a temporary location first. Do not unpack it over an unrelated game directory, and do not mix files from Windows and Linux packages. If the uMod page includes a release note or patch note for your game build, read it before copying anything.
Install Oxide/uMod on a self-hosted or remotely managed server
1. Stop the server
- Warn connected players and stop the 7 Days to Die server through its console, service manager, or hosting panel.
- Wait until the process exits and the panel reports that it is stopped. Do not replace DLLs or other framework files while the server is still running.
- Confirm that your backup contains the current saves and configuration.
2. Locate the existing server installation
Find the directory that already contains the dedicated-server executable and the game’s server files. This is the destination for the uMod package. It is not necessarily the same directory as your Steam client installation or your save-game folder. On a remote system, the provider’s file manager normally opens at a home directory; navigate to the folder used by the server startup command.

3. Extract and merge the framework files
- Extract the downloaded archive to a temporary folder.
- Open the extracted package and identify its top-level files and directories.
- Copy those contents into the existing 7 Days to Die server directory.
- When prompted, allow files and folders to merge with the installation. Choose replacement only for the files supplied by the matching uMod package; do not delete your world saves or unrelated server configuration.
- On Linux, preserve the permissions and ownership required by the account that launches the server. If the provider uses a panel, upload through its file manager rather than changing ownership blindly.
The framework is installed by placing its files alongside the existing server files. It is not installed as a client-side mod and does not belong in a player’s local game folder.
4. Start the server and watch the startup log
Start the server using the same service, script, or panel command you used before installation. Leave the console visible during startup. A successful load normally produces Oxide/uMod initialization messages before or during the plugin-loading phase. Warnings about individual plugins are handled separately; first establish that the framework itself starts.
5. Verify with oxide.version
After the server reaches its normal ready state, run:
oxide.versionRun the command in the server console or, if your permissions allow it, in the game chat. The response should identify the installed Oxide/uMod version. No response, an unknown-command error, or a command that is echoed without a version usually means the framework files are in the wrong directory, the package does not match the operating system, or the server did not actually restart with the replaced files.
Install plugins after uMod is working
Use a compatible, documented plugin source
Choose plugins that state support for your current 7 Days to Die game and uMod/Oxide build. Review the plugin’s dependencies, permissions, configuration instructions, update history, and known issues. A plugin that worked on an earlier game build may need a revised release even when its filename looks unchanged.

Upload the original .cs file
- Download the plugin file from its source and leave its filename unchanged unless the author explicitly instructs otherwise.
- Ensure the extension is exactly
.cs. A browser or text editor can accidentally save it as.cs.txt; enable file-extension visibility to check. - Upload the file to the installation’s
oxide/pluginsdirectory. Some layouts useumod/pluginsinstead; use the directory that exists in your installation and is identified by its framework documentation. - Keep the file as plain text. Do not paste it into a configuration file, wrap it in a ZIP archive, or change its encoding unless the plugin documentation requires a particular encoding.
Oxide detects plugin changes and compiles plugin files automatically, so a full server shutdown is generally not required for an initial plugin upload or an update. On a busy production server, schedule changes anyway: a compile error can remove a feature or create unexpected behavior while players are online.
Confirm that the plugin loaded
Read the server console after uploading the file. A successful compile normally produces a plugin-loaded message. Many plugins also create a configuration file, data file, or language file under the corresponding configuration or data directory. Check those files only after the console shows that the plugin loaded; their absence can indicate a compile failure or a plugin that creates files only after its first use.
If the plugin exposes a command, test it with the permissions required by its documentation. Avoid assuming that an installed plugin is enabled for every player: permissions, groups, and configuration can independently prevent a command from working.
Installing through a hosted control panel
Managed 7 Days to Die hosting can reduce file-transfer work. A panel may provide a one-click uMod/Oxide installer, an “Install” button beside the server type, or a mod-management page. The exact labels and available versions vary by provider.

- Use the panel’s uMod/Oxide installation action, selecting the operating system or server version if the panel asks.
- Start the server and open its live console.
- Run
oxide.versionand record the returned version. - Use the panel’s file manager or FTP to open
oxide/pluginsorumod/plugins, then upload unchanged plugin files.
A panel installer does not remove the need for compatibility checks. Confirm that the provider’s supported framework build matches the current game build, and ask the provider which directory and restart procedure it expects. Some providers automatically reinstall or replace framework files during game updates; others leave that task to you.

Self-hosted versus hosted installation

Choose self-hosting when you need complete control over files, backups, startup arguments, and update timing. Choose managed hosting when reliable file access, panel automation, and provider assistance are more valuable than direct operating-system control. In either case, the verification command and plugin directory are the same concepts.

oxide.version returns nothing or an unknown command
- Confirm that you copied the package into the directory used by the running server, not a similarly named backup or client folder.
- Check that the package matches Windows or Linux. A Windows archive will not initialize a Linux server.
- Stop and restart the server after copying files; a process that never restarted is still using the old installation.
- Review startup output for missing libraries, permission errors, or a framework initialization failure.
- If a panel performed the installation, ask which server instance and path the panel targeted.
The plugin is ignored
- Verify that the file ends in
.cs, not.cs.txt, and that it was not renamed with an extra extension. - Place it directly in
oxide/pluginsorumod/plugins, not one level deeper in a plugin-named subfolder. - Check that uMod itself responds to
oxide.versionbefore diagnosing the plugin. - Read the console for a compile message, dependency warning, or syntax error.
- Upload the original file again if a text editor changed its contents or encoding.
The plugin reports missing dependencies
Install the dependency named by the plugin author, using a release compatible with the same game and framework build. Load order is normally handled by the framework, but a dependency that is absent, disabled, or incompatible can prevent the main plugin from compiling. Do not silence the error by editing source code unless you understand the plugin’s dependency contract.
A plugin worked before a game update and now fails
- Check the official uMod 7 Days to Die page for a framework build matching the new game build.
- Check the plugin’s compatibility notes and update history.
- Back up the current installation and replace the framework files with the matching build.
- Restart the server and run
oxide.version. - Update or replace the plugin with a release that supports the new framework, then test each plugin individually.
Do not assume that a framework update alone repairs every plugin. Plugins compile against APIs that can change when the game or framework changes.

Linux startup fails after installation
Recheck that you downloaded the Linux-specific package, copied it into the actual Linux server directory, and preserved the service account’s access to the files. Review the launch log for executable permissions and missing shared libraries. If the provider manages the process, have it confirm the operating system and startup path rather than uploading a Windows archive as a guess.
The server will not start after replacing files
Stop the service, restore the backed-up framework files and configuration, and confirm that the original server starts without plugins. If it does, the selected uMod package is likely incompatible with the game build or operating system. Recheck the uMod release notes before trying another replacement. Keep the world-save backup untouched while troubleshooting.

Update and maintenance routine
Game updates make framework compatibility a moving target. Use this routine whenever 7 Days to Die updates or a plugin author publishes a compatibility notice:
- Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly.
- Back up saves, configuration, permissions, the current framework directory, and plugin files.
- Open the official uMod 7 Days to Die page and select the build for the new game version and operating system.
- Replace the framework files in the existing server directory, preserving saves and unrelated configuration.
- Start the server and run
oxide.version. - Read the complete startup log for framework warnings.
- Check every plugin’s compatibility, dependencies, and configuration changes.
- Upload updated plugin files one at a time and verify each load message.
- Test essential commands, permissions, world interaction, and player access before announcing that maintenance is complete.
Keep a short change log containing the game build, uMod version, plugin versions, date, and any configuration edits. That record makes rollback and diagnosis much faster when a later update introduces a failure.
Verification checklist
- The dedicated server was stopped before framework files were replaced.
- A backup of saves and configuration exists outside the live directory.
- The selected package matches the server’s operating system and current game build.
- The package was merged into the directory containing the running server files.
- The server starts without framework initialization errors.

Directory names can differ between package layouts and hosting panels. Follow the directories created by the framework in your installation rather than creating several competing plugin folders.
What a successful installation looks like
The server starts from its normal launch command, the console shows uMod/Oxide initialization, and oxide.version returns a version. A plugin copied unchanged into the recognized plugins directory then produces a load or compile message, and any documented configuration file appears in the appropriate configuration directory. If those signals occur in that order, the framework is installed correctly and remaining problems are specific to plugin compatibility, permissions, dependencies, or configuration rather than to the initial uMod installation.
