To update the icon beside your site in Bing results, publish the new favicon where your website serves it, make sure Bingbot can reach it, and use Bing Webmaster Tools to check discovery and notify Bing about changed URLs. These steps can help Bing recrawl your site, but they do not guarantee when—or whether—the new icon will appear.
Bing’s general webmaster guidance covers crawlability, discovery, and indexing tools, but the guidance cited here does not set a favicon-specific file format, size, or HTML-markup requirement. The only specific file recommendations discussed below come from a Microsoft Q&A Independent Advisor, not from a formal Bing policy.
How the favicon update reaches Bing
A favicon is a small icon associated with a website. For Bing to show a new one, the updated file must be published and accessible to the crawler, and Bing must revisit the relevant site resources. A change on your server does not itself force a search result to update: Bing’s discovery and indexing systems determine what they can process and when they refresh their results.

It helps to separate the work into two questions. First, is the site actually serving the new icon at the location the site uses? Second, can Bing reach the changed URL and revisit the relevant resources? A successful upload answers neither question on its own. Checking the public file and crawler access before submitting URLs gives you a clearer diagnosis if the search result still shows the old icon.
Choose a favicon file and location
Bing’s general guidance cited here does not establish a required favicon format, minimum dimensions, or required location. A Microsoft Q&A Independent Advisor recommended placing the icon in the site’s root directory, using ICO, PNG, GIF, or JPG, and making it at least 16×16 pixels. The answer was published August 29, 2025, and should be treated as community troubleshooting advice rather than an official Bing requirement.
If you already have a working favicon, the least disruptive update is usually to replace the file at the location your site currently serves. If you change its name or location, also update the site configuration or page references that point to it. The appropriate place to do that depends on how your site is built or managed; the sources cited here do not prescribe CMS-specific settings or HTML markup for Bing.
The root-directory suggestion is a practical recommendation from the Q&A answer, not a statement that Bing will ignore an icon elsewhere. Likewise, the listed formats and minimum dimensions are not a guarantee of display. If you keep your existing path, you avoid changing the location your site points to; if you use a new path, make sure the site points to that new location before asking Bing to revisit it.
- Use a stable, publicly reachable URL for the icon.
- If you follow the Q&A advisor’s recommendation, put the file in the site root and use one of the listed formats at 16×16 pixels or larger.
- Do not treat those format, size, and location recommendations as Bing’s published technical specification.
- Do not assume a rule you have seen for Google Search automatically applies to Bing.
Update the favicon and check that it is served correctly
- Identify the icon your site currently uses. Check your site’s existing configuration or page references and note the favicon URL. If your website platform manages the favicon for you, use its site-icon setting rather than uploading an unrelated image. The goal at this stage is to identify the file and URL that the live site actually uses, not merely a copy stored in your account.
- Prepare and publish the replacement. Upload the new file to the intended location, or update it through your site platform. If you keep the same URL, verify that the URL now serves the replacement rather than an older cached or deployed file. If you use a new URL, make sure the site points to that location. If the site continues to use the old location, changing a different file will not update the icon it serves.
- Check the public URL. Open the favicon URL as a visitor would and confirm that it loads. If the file is missing, inaccessible, or still the old image, resolve that deployment or URL issue before asking Bing to recrawl. This check distinguishes a site-side problem from a delay in Bing’s crawl or display.
- Check access for crawlers. Review robots.txt and any other access controls that could prevent Bingbot from fetching the icon or relevant site resources. Bing’s general guidance emphasizes crawlability; the Microsoft Q&A advisor also specifically recommends checking robots.txt for the favicon. If access is blocked, submitting a URL does not remove the restriction.
- Inspect and notify Bing. In Bing Webmaster Tools, use the available URL inspection and submission controls to investigate or notify Bing about the changed URLs. If your site uses IndexNow, it can provide automated notification of added, updated, or deleted URLs.
- Allow time for a recrawl. Check again after Bing has had an opportunity to revisit the relevant pages and resources. Neither the support guidance nor the community answer provides a guaranteed favicon refresh time.
Before you submit, make sure you know which URL changed. If you replaced the favicon at its existing URL, that file URL is part of the change; if you changed a page reference or moved the file, the affected site URL may also matter. Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow deal with URL discovery and notification. They do not repair a missing file, change your site configuration, or make a blocked resource crawlable.
Ways to notify Bing about a change
The options differ in how you send a change notification, not in whether Bing must show the new icon. Bing’s URL-submission guidance recommends IndexNow for automated notification, while also documenting manual submission options. Ordinary recrawling remains possible without a notification, but you have less direct control over when Bing revisits a URL.

A notification is about a URL change. It does not certify that the icon is valid, accessible, or selected for display. Check the file and crawl access even if your submission succeeds.
For a one-off update, the normal recrawl path may be enough if you are willing to wait. Manual submission gives you a way to investigate or notify Bing about a URL through Webmaster Tools. IndexNow is the automated option for sites set up to send notifications when URLs are added, updated, or deleted. These are different ways to prompt discovery, not different levels of assurance that a favicon will appear.
Choose the route that fits your site’s workflow: no notification for a minor update, a manual check when you want to investigate a specific changed URL, or IndexNow when automated notifications are part of your setup. Whichever route you choose, first confirm the live file and crawl access. A notification about the wrong URL—or about a URL that still serves the old file—will not solve the underlying site issue.
Why Bing may still show the old favicon
A stale icon does not identify one cause by itself. Work through the checks below in order, starting with the live site rather than assuming Bing has a special favicon error.
The replacement was not deployed at the URL the site uses
Confirm that the icon’s public URL loads and contains the new image. If the file was renamed or moved, confirm that the site now references the new location. A successful upload to a hosting account is not enough if the public page still points somewhere else.

Bingbot cannot fetch the icon or relevant resources
Review robots.txt and access restrictions for the favicon and the site resources Bing needs to crawl. If a crawler cannot reach a resource, it cannot process it. Fix the restriction, then use Bing Webmaster Tools to inspect or notify Bing about the relevant changed URL.
Do not check only whether the page opens for you. A resource may be available to a visitor while a crawler is restricted by site rules or other access controls. Bing’s general guidance emphasizes crawlability and reliable processing of resources, so resolve access problems before interpreting a stale result as a display issue.
Bing has not recrawled the changed resources yet
Indexing and discovery take time. Bing support says a newly published or substantially revamped site may take a couple of weeks to be discovered and shown. Separately, the Microsoft Q&A Independent Advisor estimated that a favicon refresh may take several days or weeks. Neither statement is a favicon-specific guarantee or service-level deadline, and neither establishes an average refresh time.

These timeframes are broad expectations, not a countdown. A URL submission or IndexNow notification can support discovery, but no source cited here promises a particular date for the new favicon to show. If the icon is still stale after a short wait, repeat the file and access checks rather than assuming the notification failed or that a particular wait period guarantees an update.
The file advice is not an official Bing specification
If the file is reachable but Bing still does not show it, remember that the ICO, PNG, GIF, or JPG and 16×16-or-larger recommendation comes from the Q&A advisor. The Bing guidance cited here does not confirm that a particular format, dimension, or location will make Bing display the icon. Avoid treating compliance with that advice as proof that Bing must select the file.
A search-engine rule was carried over from Google
Google publishes its own favicon documentation, but Google-specific instructions are not evidence of Bing requirements. If you have adjusted the icon based on a Google rule, do not assume that doing so explains what Bing is showing. Keep the Bing diagnosis focused on the live icon, crawl access, and Bing’s own discovery and submission tools.

How to investigate with Bing Webmaster Tools
- Open your site in Bing Webmaster Tools. If it has not been added there, use the service’s site setup and verification process before relying on its site-specific diagnostics.
- Inspect the relevant URL. Use the available inspection feature to investigate the homepage or other changed URL associated with the update. Review the information Bing provides about its ability to access or process the URL.
- Submit or notify Bing about the change. Use the available manual URL submission controls, or send an automated IndexNow notification if your site is configured for it. Choose the URL that actually changed; submitting a different page does not correct an inaccessible icon file.
- Recheck the site and Bing’s status. If the icon remains stale, first confirm the public file and crawl access again. Bing’s tools can help investigate URL discovery and indexing, but they do not guarantee a favicon refresh or a specific display date.
The exact controls available can vary as Bing Webmaster Tools changes. Use the current options shown for your verified site rather than relying on a fixed button name or path that may no longer match the interface.

Inspection and submission have related but different purposes. Inspection helps you investigate what Bing reports about a URL. Submission or an IndexNow notification tells Bing that a URL has changed. Neither replaces testing whether the public file loads, and neither makes a blocked URL accessible. If you have changed both the file and the site reference, consider which URLs are relevant to those changes rather than submitting an unrelated page.

Do not assume that a Google-specific format, dimension, or markup rule also applies to Bing. When to contact Bing support
If the live icon is correct, the relevant resources are crawlable, and you have used the available inspection or submission tools, the Microsoft Q&A advisor suggests contacting Bing Webmaster Support if the issue persists. Include the affected site and favicon URL, what you changed, and what you have already checked so support can investigate the specific case. Contacting support still does not create a guaranteed refresh deadline.
Before escalating, summarize the facts that help separate a site-side problem from a crawl or display delay: the URL that serves the icon, whether that URL now shows the replacement, whether you moved or renamed it, what you checked in robots.txt and other access controls, and which changed URLs you inspected or submitted. This information is more useful than simply reporting that the result looks wrong, though it cannot ensure a particular outcome or response time.
