To add optical audio to a computer, first check whether it already has an optical S/PDIF output. If it does, connect that output to an optical input on your receiver, DAC, amplifier, or soundbar, then select the matching playback device and input. If it does not, a compatible sound card or external audio device may provide one—but confirm that its optical port supports S/PDIF output, not just optical input or ADAT.

Check whether your computer has optical S/PDIF output

Look at the computer’s rear connections and consult the manual for its exact model. The manual may call the port “Optical S/PDIF” or “Digital Optical Out.” A TOSLINK-shaped connector by itself does not prove that it is an S/PDIF output: optical ports can serve other protocols or be inputs. Dell’s Aurora R9 back-panel documentation is one model-specific example of a computer with an optical port; it is not evidence that all PCs include one.

If the computer has an optical output

Connect it to an optical input on the receiving device with a TOSLINK cable. The GIGABYTE Z590-series manual describes routing S/PDIF output to an external decoder. The receiver, DAC, or soundbar must have a compatible optical input.

If the computer has no optical output

A cable cannot create an output the computer’s hardware does not provide. Consider an internal sound card, a documented motherboard S/PDIF header with a compatible bracket, or an external USB audio device. The exact model’s documentation needs to confirm S/PDIF output, port direction, protocol, operating-system support, and any required driver or mode setting.

Choose an upgrade path that matches your computer

Path What to verify
Use the existing computer output Exact-model manual confirms optical S/PDIF output; receiving device has optical input; both devices support the required format.
Install an internal sound card Compatible expansion slot, case fit, operating-system driver, optical output rather than input, and whether a separate adapter is required.
Use a motherboard S/PDIF header and bracket The exact motherboard manual documents the header, pinout, compatible bracket, output routing, and whether the signal is optical or coaxial.
Use an external USB audio device Documentation confirms optical S/PDIF output, not ADAT or input-only operation; check mode, sample rate, driver, and OS compatibility.
Use another digital connection Both the computer and receiving device support the same alternative connection, such as HDMI or USB, and the audio can be routed through it.

Internal sound card or header

An internal card is an option for a desktop with a compatible slot, but confirm its optical connection and driver support before buying. The ASUS Xonar DG SI manual documents an S/PDIF output that requires a separately purchased optical adapter and TOSLINK cable. This is a legacy example: check current availability and compatibility rather than assuming either.

A motherboard’s internal S/PDIF header may also be usable with a compatible bracket when the exact board manual documents it. Output arrangements differ: the GIGABYTE GA-F2A88X-UP4 manual, for example, describes S/PDIF configuration. Do not assume a header exists or that it provides optical rather than coaxial output.

  • 【Attention】 - The USB SPDIF adapter is unidirectional, it transmits audio signals from USB to SPDIF ONLY. CAN NOT be used for transmitting audio signal from optical to USB.

External USB audio device

Some interfaces have optical digital connections, but their mode and direction matter. Focusrite’s Digital I/O Modes guide explains that optical operation can depend on the selected mode. Its Scarlett 16i16 4th Gen hardware guide lists ADAT as eight channels at 44.1/48 kHz and four channels at 88.2/96 kHz for that model. Those are model-specific ADAT details, not a promise of S/PDIF output from every optical port.

Connect the devices and select the right outputs

  1. Confirm the ports. Use the computer’s exact manual to identify an optical S/PDIF output and the receiving device’s optical input. Do not treat an optical input or ADAT port as an S/PDIF output.
  2. Check any new hardware. For a card or header, confirm the slot or pinout, output direction, adapter or bracket requirements, and driver compatibility. For a USB device, verify its optical mode and supported protocol.
  3. Connect the cable. Run a TOSLINK cable from the computer’s optical output to the receiver, DAC, amplifier, or soundbar’s optical input.
  4. Select the computer output. In the operating system’s sound settings or audio control panel, choose the digital/optical playback device. On Windows, Microsoft’s sound troubleshooting guidance includes selecting the intended playback device as the default; labels vary by hardware and driver.
  5. Select the receiving input. Use the receiver or soundbar controls to choose the optical input connected to the computer.
  6. Choose a supported format. Set a sample rate and bit depth accepted by both endpoints, and ensure the source audio uses a format the receiver can decode. Consult the device manuals for supported settings.

Understand the limits of optical surround sound

Optical S/PDIF does not guarantee discrete multichannel audio. In its FAQ updated 28 November 2023, MSI says ordinary DAC decoding supports two channels; for 5.1, the amplifier or DAC must support Dolby Digital (AC-3) or DTS decoding, and the source audio must also provide compatible 5.1 audio. That is MSI’s guidance on motherboard optical output, not a guarantee that every computer, application, or receiver will pass or decode surround sound.

Cubilux USB C to SPDIF Transmitter, Unidirectional Type C to Optical Audio Output Adapter with 192KHz/24bit DAC for MacBook Pro/Air, Laptop, Computer
  • [Convert USB Port to SPDIF Transmitter] – Cubilux S/PDIF Output Adapter lets you transmit the optical audio signal from the USB Type C port of computers to soundbars, home audio system, external DAC or amplifier to enjoy 5.1 surround sound.
  • [For Output ONLY] – This converter cannot be used in the opposite direction, not for receiving SPDIF signals from source devices like DACs/AMPs, not for recording audio.
  • [Support 5.1 & Stereo Audio, NOT for 7.1] – This adapter can output stereo optical signal without any setup or software, and with a media player to decode 5.1 files and proper setting, it can output 5.1 surround sound, but this adapter does NOT support 7.1 surround sound due to the limitation of the USB port.
  • [NOT for Partial-Featured USB Port] – This adapter is designed for computers and is not compatible with devices that devices with only partial-featured USB ports, such as TVs, Car USB ports, speakers’ USB ports, etc.
  • [Crystal Clean Hi-Res Sound] – The USB Type C to TOSLINK Connector delivers crisp and clear sound from 48 KHz/24-bit to 192 KHz/24-bit with great clarity and rich audio details.

If your goal is 5.1, check all three points: the computer and its driver can send the required encoded signal, the content is available in a compatible format, and the receiving device can decode it. A stereo PCM signal will not become discrete 5.1 merely because it travels through an optical cable.

Troubleshoot a silent optical connection

  • No optical device appears in sound settings: Confirm the computer actually has an output, install the appropriate driver, and check that the device is enabled. A port may be input-only or intended for another protocol.
  • The computer plays sound through another device: Select the digital output as the playback device or default output.
  • The receiver shows no signal: Check that the cable runs from output to input and that the receiver is set to the matching optical input.
  • The receiver detects a signal but produces no usable audio: Select a format supported by both endpoints and the source. For multichannel playback, verify encoded content and receiver decoding support.
  • An interface’s optical port does not work as expected: Check the product documentation for S/PDIF versus ADAT, input versus output, and any required mode selection.

For another digital route, ASRock’s older setup guidance discusses HDMI as well as S/PDIF; the right alternative depends on the ports and routing supported by both devices.
