To add a non-Steam game to your Steam Deck, install or make the application available on the Deck first, then use Steam in Desktop Mode to add it to your library. The entry is only a shortcut: it does not install the game, provide updates, or verify that you own it. Afterward, set up controls from that title’s library details in Gaming Mode.
Before you start: have the application ready
The Steam add-to-library process selects an application or program already available on your Deck; it does not download or install the game. Steam describes the result as “only” a shortcut in the Steam client. Adding an entry also does not establish ownership or make the application compatible. - Open the Steam client. In Desktop Mode, select Add a Game at the lower-left of the client, then choose Add a Non-Steam Game. Select the installed application from the list and add it. Steam also documents the route Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library, where you can browse for a program. Labels may differ slightly by client version. Pick a layout based on what the application expects and what you need to do:
- Gamepad-first layout: suited to games designed around controller input.
- Mouse-and-keyboard emulation: may be more practical for launchers or games that rely on a cursor, keyboard shortcuts, or text entry. A launcher may still require mouse or touchscreen input.
- Community layout: a starting point to try if you do not want to build a layout yourself. Shared layouts are not guaranteed to suit your game version, preferences, or setup.
SteamOS desktop applications and games can access the Deck’s inputs while Steam is running, but that does not guarantee every non-Steam game or launcher will work with a controller. Steam Support: Steam Deck and Steam Machine Desktop: FAQ

Troubleshoot launch and input problems
Check whether the application can run on Steam Deck
Steam advises checking that a non-Steam application supports Arch Linux. Compatibility is application-specific, so a library shortcut alone is not evidence that the program will launch correctly. Some launchers need mouse or touchscreen navigation even when the game itself supports a controller. Steam Deck – Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide
Test the Deck’s inputs
If buttons or controls seem faulty, open Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Controller Inputs. Use the test to distinguish an input issue from a layout or application issue. Steam Deck – Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide

Try a compatibility tool only when appropriate
For a library entry that is unstable or will not launch, Steam documents forcing a compatibility tool such as Proton for that specific entry. Treat this as a troubleshooting option, not a universal fix: the right setting depends on the application. Steam also recommends closing or disabling third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode and restarting when a non-Steam application is unstable. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need a dock for setup?
No. The add-to-library and control-layout steps work handheld, and a dock is optional. If you prefer a larger screen or external keyboard, mouse, controller, or Ethernet connection, Steam says a variety of USB-C docks and hubs work with the Deck. Choose one to match the ports, power pass-through, display resolution and refresh needs, and cable compatibility of your setup; Steam’s guidance does not certify a specific model. Display behavior can depend on the display and connection. Steam Support: Docking the Steam Deck
