To add mods safely, stop the dedicated server, download each Workshop item with SteamCMD, place client-required folders on -mod and server-only components on -serverMod, install the matching signature keys, and keep the Altis Life 5.0.0 mission and extDB3 layout intact. Test one mod at a time with a matching client before enabling a larger set.
Plan the change before stopping the server
Mod installation is a file-layout and startup-parameter change, not just a Workshop subscription. Begin by recording the server’s current executable, installation root, startup script or hosting-panel command, active configuration file, and profile directory. This gives you a known rollback point if a dependency or Workshop update breaks the mission.
Make a complete backup
server.cfgorconfig.cfg, including network, mission, password, and signature settings.- The entire
MPMissionsdirectory and any custom mission files. @life_serverand@extDB3, including their configuration and binary files.- The Altis Life database, exported with the database engine’s normal backup method.
- Profile directories and recent RPT logs, which provide the baseline for troubleshooting.
Stop the server before downloading, replacing, or moving content. When introducing several mods, work in a staging copy of the installation. A staging copy lets you identify a bad dependency or incompatible update without taking the live database or mission offline repeatedly.
Choose the correct loading parameter
Arma 3 has two separate mod lists. The distinction determines whether players must install an item and whether the Launcher presents it as required.

Do not put a server-only package on -mod. Doing so can make players receive an unnecessary mod prompt or cause them to search for files they should never load. Conversely, a package that supplies models, scripts, or weapons used by the mission belongs on -mod; clients need those files to render and execute the content.
Use relative mod folders located within or below the Arma 3 installation when relying on the official -mod behavior. Keep the final client list in a document that includes exact folder names, Workshop IDs, dependencies, and the version policy.

Identify a compatible Workshop release
Open the mod’s official Workshop page and release notes before downloading it. Record the numeric value after ?id=; that is the Workshop ID SteamCMD requires. Also record:
- Required frameworks, such as CBA, and the order or compatibility notes supplied by the publisher.
- Whether the item is client-required, server-only, or split into separate client and server packages.
- Whether the archive contains a
Keysdirectory and signed addon files. - The release or version tested with your Altis Life 5.0 mission and any stated minimum Arma 3 version.
A similar name is not proof of compatibility. Check the item’s actual dependencies and release notes, particularly when a mission framework expects an older API or a specific signed build.

The downloaded files are placed in Steam’s Workshop content tree beneath the Arma 3 app ID. Expose the content to the server as an @ModName directory in or below the Arma 3 installation, either by copying or by creating the folder structure required by your hosting panel. Preserve the mod’s internal Addons, Keys, and configuration files; do not flatten the contents into the server root.

Bohemia Interactive’s server-browser integration can associate a server mod with its Workshop page when the mod root contains a meta.cpp file. A minimal file is:
protocol = 1;
publishedid = 123456789;Replace 123456789 with the item’s actual Workshop ID. With this metadata, the Launcher can identify the item and offer activation or download assistance before a player joins. It does not remove the need to load the folder on the server or to satisfy dependencies.
Build the startup command
Add client-required folders as a semicolon-separated list after -mod, and keep server-only folders in a separate -serverMod list. Adapt the executable, configuration filename, and paths to your installation.

./arma3server_x64 -config=server.cfg -mod=@CBA_A3;@YourClientMod -serverMod=@life_server;@extDB3;@YourServerToolDo not copy the trailing punctuation from an example into a folder name. Check spelling and capitalization against the directories on disk. If a panel has separate fields for client and server mods, enter each list in its corresponding field rather than combining them into one text box.
Check load order and dependencies
Keep prerequisite frameworks before the packages that use them, following the mod publisher’s instructions. A missing framework can look like a broken mission even when the newly added folder is present. If you change the list, save the exact command in your deployment notes so a later restart does not silently omit an item.
Preserve the Altis Life 5.0.0 file layout
Altis Life RPG 5.0.0 has files that must remain where the framework expects them. The AsYetUntitled framework guide identifies extDB3 as required for version 5.0.0. A typical Windows-oriented layout is:

life_server.pbo belongs in @life_server/Addons. The playable mission remains Altis_Life.Altis.pbo in MPMissions. Adding a mod must not replace, rename, or move either PBO. If you maintain multiple maps, keep each map’s mission file distinct and select the intended one in the server configuration.
Install the map-specific SQM
For 5.0.0 and later, copy the SQM for the chosen map from the framework’s SQMs directory into the mission directory and rename it exactly mission.sqm. The filename is significant: leaving a map-specific source name in place can prevent the mission from loading the expected terrain and objects.

Configure extDB3 without exposing credentials
Keep extdb3-conf.ini with @extDB3 and configure the database connection there. Store database credentials outside public repositories and outside backups shared with players. On Windows, confirm that the extDB3 DLL matches the server architecture and that the process can read the configuration. On Linux, apply the equivalent file permissions and library requirements for the extDB3 build you installed.
Install signature keys when enforcement is enabled
With verifySignatures = 2, the server checks that client addons are signed by a key it trusts. Inspect every enabled mod’s Keys directory and copy each public .bikey file into the server’s root keys directory. Keep the mod’s signed PBO and other addon files intact; copying a key does not make an unsigned or modified addon valid.

Restart after adding or removing keys. A client using an unsigned build, a modified PBO, or a release signed by a key absent from the server can be kicked with an addon-signature error. The safest workflow is to distribute the same signed release that you tested, rather than allowing players to mix Workshop revisions.
Synchronize every player’s client
Publish a required-mod list containing the exact display name, folder name, Workshop ID, dependency order, and version policy. Players should subscribe through Workshop or import a launcher preset/modset, then allow the Launcher to download and activate the list before connecting.
The server and every client must load compatible versions of all items on -mod. Items on -serverMod should not appear in that player-facing list. If you use Bohemia Interactive’s Workshop metadata support, the Launcher can pair a server mod with its Workshop item and offer a subscribe or download prompt, but players still need to accept dependencies and restart the game when the Launcher requests it.

Define an update policy
- Automatic updates: convenient for new fixes, but a publisher’s breaking change can arrive before you test it.
- Pinned or staged updates: copy the new build to staging, test the mission and database connection, then promote it to live.
- Rollback: retain the previously working mod folder and backup so you can restore the startup list and files together.
Record the date and version of each approved client mod. This makes a join failure diagnosable instead of leaving players to guess which Workshop revision is active.

Test in a controlled sequence
- With the server stopped, verify the new folder name, its internal
Addonsdirectory, dependencies, and any suppliedKeysdirectory. - Add only one new mod to the appropriate parameter. Leave the known-good Altis Life and extDB3 entries unchanged.
- Copy its
.bikeyfiles tokeysif signature verification is enabled. - Start the server and confirm it reaches mission selection or automatic initialization without an immediate configuration or addon error.
- Read the newest RPT log for missing addons, dependency failures, signature messages, and extDB3 connection errors.
- Connect with a clean client profile that has exactly the required client modset. Test spawning, mission initialization, database-backed actions, and any feature supplied by the new mod.
- Only after that test passes, add the next mod and repeat the sequence.
A clean client profile helps distinguish a server deployment problem from stale client cache files or an old local mod version. Keep the successful RPT log with your deployment notes as a baseline.
Troubleshoot by symptom

Choose Workshop, manual files, or managed hosting
The deployment method changes who handles downloads and permissions, but it does not change the need for correct parameters, signatures, and Altis Life files.

For a self-managed server, SteamCMD is repeatable and auditable. For a managed server, verify the panel’s file paths and backup behavior before moving an existing Altis Life installation; a convenient mod manager is not a substitute for preserving life_server.pbo, the mission PBO, the map SQM, and the database configuration.
Operational checklist for future mod changes
- Stop the server and create a dated backup of configuration, missions, server mods, database, profile, and logs.
- Confirm the Workshop ID, dependencies, client/server classification, tested version, and presence of signed keys.
- Download app
107410content with SteamCMD and expose it as a correctly named@ModNamefolder. - Put client-required content only on
-mod; put administration, persistence, and database components only on-serverMod. - Keep

A reliable Altis Life 5.0 server keeps the mission framework stable while treating each mod as a controlled deployment: identify the exact Workshop release, place it in the correct parameter, satisfy signatures, synchronize clients, and retain a tested rollback. That process prevents most join kicks and preserves extDB3-backed gameplay when the mod set changes.
