To add a typical Windrose mod to a dedicated server, stop the server, back it up, and upload the mod to the folder that matches its format. Put .pak files in R5/Content/Paks/~mods. Mods built for UE4SS (usually Lua mods) require the UE4SS loader in R5/Binaries/Win64/, with each extracted mod folder under R5/Binaries/Win64/ue4ss/Mods.
These are manual community-mod installations, not Steam Workshop subscriptions. A server mod may also require every player to install the matching client component. Test one change at a time, keep a backup, and expect a game update to disable or break a mod.
Before you install anything
Windrose does not currently have a reported official Steam Workshop integration or a built-in mod manager. Hosting guides describe Workshop as a possible future feature rather than an available installation method. The practical route is therefore a file upload through your host’s file manager or an SFTP client.

- Format: a packaged Unreal file ending in
.pak, or an extracted folder intended for UE4SS. - Side: server-side, client-side, or both. A client-only visual or interface change belongs on each player’s game, not on the server.
- Dependencies: some UE4SS mods need the UE4SS loader, a particular loader version, another framework, or a configuration entry.
Do not assume that a mod described as “single-player” will work on a dedicated server. One host guide specifically reports that SML is marked solo-only on its Nexus page; putting it in a server ~mods folder has no effect.
Make a recoverable backup
Use your host’s backup function if it has one, or download a copy of the server files before changing them. At minimum, preserve the current R5 directory, your save data, configuration files, and any existing mod folders. There is no built-in rollback for a bad community mod, so the backup is what lets you return to the last known-good state.
Schedule downtime
Stop the server completely before uploading or replacing files. A running process can keep a file locked, load only part of an upload, or overwrite a change when it shuts down. Tell players when the server will be unavailable and do not let anyone connect until you have completed a test start.

The two common methods are not interchangeable. A .pak is a packaged game asset and uses the game’s Paks directory. A UE4SS mod is loaded by a separate framework and uses the binaries directory plus a configuration file.

Install a .pak mod on the server
This is the simpler route when the mod author labels the package as server-compatible.
- Back up the server. Save a provider backup or download the relevant files before making a change.
- Stop the server. Use the host control panel’s Stop or Shutdown action and wait until the status shows that the process has exited.
- Open the files. Launch the host’s file manager or connect with SFTP using the credentials supplied by the host.
- Open the Paks directory. From the server’s game installation, navigate to
R5/Content/Paks/. - Create the mod directory. Inside
Paks, create a directory named exactly~mods, including the tilde and using lowercase letters. If it already exists, do not create a second similarly named directory. - Upload the package. Put the downloaded
.pakfile directly insideR5/Content/Paks/~mods. Do not leave it inside a ZIP archive and do not add an extra level such as~mods/MyMod/MyMod.pakunless the mod’s own instructions explicitly require that layout. - Check the filename and transfer. Wait for the upload to finish and confirm that the file size in the host panel matches the download. A partial transfer can look like a valid file but fail at startup.
- Start the server. Start the process from the host panel and wait for it to reach its normal running state.
- Test with one mod first. Join with a test account or have one player check the feature. Do not upload a batch of packages on the first attempt; one-at-a-time testing tells you which file caused a failure.
When a pak does not load
Stop the server and check the path character by character. The required path is R5/Content/Paks/~mods, not the local PC’s game directory and not a folder named mods without the tilde. Confirm that the package is a .pak, not a ZIP or a nested archive. If the path and file are correct, remove the newest package, restore the backup if necessary, and check the mod page for a required game build or dependency. Community pak mods are described as experimental and can stop working after a Windrose update.
Install UE4SS (Lua) mods
UE4SS mods use a loader that injects the framework when the server starts. Installing only the mod folder does nothing if the loader is missing.
Install the loader once
- Stop and back up the server. Keep a copy of the original
R5directory so the loader can be removed cleanly. - Obtain the UE4SS package required by the mod. Use the version and installation notes on the mod’s page. Do not mix files from unrelated loader releases.
- Extract the loader. Place the extracted UE4SS files in
R5/Binaries/Win64/, next to the Windrose game executable. Do not put the whole downloaded archive one level deeper than that directory. - Start the server once. This first launch allows the loader to create its folders and log. Then stop the server again before adding individual mods.
- Check for a UE4SS log. Look in the UE4SS directory for the log file. Its presence is the basic indication that the loader started; it does not prove that every mod is compatible.
Some hosts offer a package called Windrose+ that bundles UE4SS. One hosting guide says its servers deploy as vanilla by default, so that package may have to be enabled before UE4SS mods can load. The exact control-panel label and availability depend on the host; if no package is offered, use the manual loader layout above.
Add each mod folder
- Extract the downloaded mod. Keep the folder structure supplied by the author. A ZIP file itself is not a UE4SS mod.
- Open the UE4SS Mods directory. Navigate to
R5/Binaries/Win64/ue4ss/Mods. - Upload the extracted folder. Place the mod’s folder directly in
Mods. Avoid accidental double nesting such asMods/Example/Example/<files>unless the author documents it. - Edit the mods list when required. Some guides require an entry in
mods.json. One source reports that the entire file must be enclosed in square brackets, making it a JSON array; malformed JSON prevents mods from loading. Preserve commas, quotation marks, brackets, and the exact property names expected by the loader or mod author. - Disable without deleting. If the configuration format includes an enabled or disabled setting, change that entry to disabled and restart rather than deleting the folder. The precise field name is mod-specific, so follow the mod’s instructions instead of inventing a new key.
- Restart and inspect the log. Start the server, wait for it to initialize, and read the UE4SS log for loader or dependency errors before asking players to join.
Protect mods.json
Make a copy of the file before editing it. Use a plain-text editor that does not add rich-text formatting. A valid JSON array has one opening square bracket at the beginning and one closing square bracket at the end; entries are separated by commas, and text values use straight double quotation marks. A single missing comma or bracket can stop all UE4SS mods from loading. If the server stops recognizing every mod immediately after an edit, restore the backup and add entries one at a time.

Server-side and client-side requirements
“Installed on the server” does not mean “available to every player.” Mods can change authoritative game behavior on the server, alter assets that must be present on a client, or affect only a player’s interface.

Players may not need local files, but they still need a compatible game build.
- Client-side only: install it in each player’s own Windrose installation. Do not copy it into the dedicated server unless the author explicitly says it has a server component.
- Both sides: install the server component in the correct server folder and give every connecting player the matching client files and version.
Several hosting guides warn that every player needs the same mods on their client unless the mod page identifies it as client-side only. Treat a connection error, missing asset, or unexpected behavior as a possible client/server mismatch before changing unrelated server settings.
Coordinate versions with players
Record the exact mod filenames and versions in your server’s information message or community channel. When you update a package, update the clients at the same time. If one player has an older package, remove that package temporarily and verify that an unmodded client can connect; this isolates synchronization problems from server installation problems.
Testing and rollback procedure
A disciplined test prevents a broken package from becoming a long outage.
- Start from the backed-up, working server.
- Install one package or one UE4SS folder, never a large batch.
- Start the server and wait for the normal ready state.
- Check the UE4SS log when using UE4SS; for a pak, verify the file is in the exact Paks path.
- Connect with a test player and exercise the feature the mod claims to add.
- Watch for crashes, missing assets, disconnects, abnormal CPU or memory use, and errors immediately after joining.
- Stop the server if anything fails, remove the newest change, and restart.
- Only after the test succeeds should you announce the mod to the rest of the players.
If removing one file does not restore the server, stop testing and restore the complete backup. Do not keep layering new packages onto an unknown state.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The server starts, but nothing changes
- For a pak, confirm the file is directly under
R5/Content/Paks/~mods. - For UE4SS, confirm the loader is in
R5/Binaries/Win64/and that a UE4SS log is created. - Check whether the mod is marked solo-only or client-side only.
- Verify that the package targets the current Windrose build and has all stated dependencies.
All UE4SS mods stopped loading
Inspect mods.json first. Restore the last known-good copy if the file was recently edited, then add one entry at a time. Confirm that the file has the required outer square brackets and valid commas and quotation marks.
The server crashes after adding a mod
Stop the server, remove the last mod added, and restart. If the crash remains, restore the backup rather than deleting random files. A game update can make previously working community packages incompatible; check the author’s compatibility notice before reinstalling.
Players cannot connect after the install
Ask whether the affected players have the required client-side files and the same mod version. Test an unmodded client. If an unmodded client connects but a modded one does not, compare the client package and dependencies; if nobody connects, roll back the server change and review the server log.
The host panel has no file manager
Use SFTP with the credentials supplied by the provider, or ask the provider where the server’s R5 directory is exposed. Do not upload files into a generic home directory and assume the game will scan it; the folder must be inside the actual Windrose installation.

Updates, support, and mod safety
Community packages are not covered by a guaranteed compatibility promise. Hosting documentation describes pak mods as experimental, and the studio is reported to warn that future patches may invalidate mods and that bug reports involving modded clients or servers may not be investigated. Those policy details are based on a fan-wiki summary of a studio FAQ, so check the current official FAQ before relying on them for a support decision.

A Steam discussion summary attributes a post to a developer identified as “Daedric” saying dedicated servers and future modding support were planned with technical feasibility in mind. The post date and exact wording were not confirmed in the available material, so it should not be treated as a current release commitment. There is likewise no confirmed date for Workshop support.
After a Windrose patch
- Keep the server stopped until you know whether the host has updated the game files.
- Read each mod author’s compatibility notes.
- Copy the updated server files and your mod configuration into a fresh backup.
- Test with all mods removed if the vanilla server will not start.
- Reintroduce pak and UE4SS mods one at a time, beginning with the least dependent package.
- Tell players if a temporary unmodded period is necessary.
Optional mod-management tools
A third-party utility called CertiFried is reported by one hosting guide to detect the Windrose game folder, download and install Nexus mods, and create backups before changes. It is not an official Windrose tool, and the report comes from a single source rather than an independent test. If you use any manager, keep your own backup and confirm the resulting files still match the documented server paths. Manual installation remains the clearest way to understand and undo a change.
What official support means for a server owner
At present, manual installation should be treated as community practice rather than a first-party feature. No built-in modding tools or official Workshop workflow are established in the available information. The developer’s reported position allows players to use mods at their own discretion on dedicated servers or in solo play, while compatibility with future patches is not guaranteed. That means you, not the host or developer, need to maintain backups, track versions, and decide when a mod is safe for a shared world.
If a mod page does not clearly state its format, side, dependencies, and supported game version, do not install it on a live server. Ask the author for those details or test it on a disposable server first.
