Core Keeper dedicated servers do not install mods from a Steam Workshop or mod.io subscription. To mod a server, stop it, back up its worlds, download each mod’s files, extract them into the server’s local Mods directory, install any dependencies, and give players a matching mod set and game build. Add one mod at a time so a failed update can be isolated without putting the only copy of your world at risk.
What the server actually needs
A dedicated server reads mod files from its own installation and data folders. A subscription made in a player’s Steam or mod.io account affects that player’s client, not the separate server process. Even if you already have a mod installed on your gaming PC, download a separate copy for the server.
Every mod also has a scope. A client-only mod belongs on players’ computers. A server-side mod belongs on the dedicated server. A mod marked for both client and server requires files in both places. Read the mod’s download page and installation notes before copying anything; do not assume that a mod described as “working in multiplayer” is server-side.
Mod support and folder layouts can change with Core Keeper patches. The paths below are the community-consistent locations for current dedicated-server installations, but check the game’s current official documentation and the mod’s own instructions after an update.

Before you install anything
Confirm that the vanilla server works
Start the unmodified server and join it once. This gives you a known-good baseline. If the vanilla server already fails, adding a mod will make the cause harder to identify. Record the game build shown by the server and by the players who will connect.
Stop the process cleanly
Stop the dedicated server before creating folders, replacing files, or changing a mod. Editing a live world can leave files partially written. Wait until the server process has exited rather than copying files while it is still saving.

Back up the worlds folder
Copy the server’s worlds directory to a separate location before every mod change. Keep at least one untouched backup from the last known-good state. A backup on the same disk is useful for quick recovery, but a second disk or remote location protects you from disk failure as well as from a bad mod.
Check the mod’s requirements
- Read whether the release is for your Core Keeper build.
- Identify whether it is client-only, server-side, or required on both sides.
- List every dependency named by the author and download the compatible version of each one.
- Check whether the release supports your server operating system. Reports that some Windows-only components do not load on Linux exist, but this behavior is not established for every mod; verify it with the specific mod’s documentation.
- Note any configuration instructions. Guides disagree about a single universal configuration location, so do not create a
Save/modsorDedicatedServer/modsdirectory unless the mod author explicitly requires it.
Find the dedicated server’s Mods directory
Windows
Inside the dedicated server installation, open:
CoreKeeperServer_DataStreamingAssetsMods
The directory name is exactly Mods. Treat the capitalization as significant, especially when moving a server between operating systems or using scripts that distinguish upper- and lower-case names.

Community installation guidance places the directory at:
(installdir)/CoreKeeperServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Mods

If the folder does not exist
Create a directory named Mods under CoreKeeperServer_Data/StreamingAssets. Do not put it beside CoreKeeperServer_Data, inside the worlds folder, or in a player’s local game profile. If the installation has more than one server copy, use the folder belonging to the executable that actually launches the world you are modifying.

Install a mod step by step
- Stop the server. Confirm that its process has exited and that no save operation is still running.
- Back up the worlds. Make a dated copy of the worlds folder and keep the previous known-good copy until the new setup has been tested.
- Open the server’s data path. Navigate to
CoreKeeperServer_DataStreamingAssetsModson Windows or(installdir)/CoreKeeperServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Modson Linux. - Create the folder when necessary. The directory must be named
Mods, with that capitalization. - Download the release archive. Use the source named by the mod author. Downloading a client subscription alone is not sufficient; the server needs its own local files.
- Read the package instructions before extracting. Some archives contain a ready-to-copy mod directory; others contain files that must be placed according to the author’s layout. Follow that release’s instructions rather than guessing from the archive name.
- Extract into a uniquely named subfolder. Give each mod its own directory, using a recognizable name and version if that makes maintenance easier. Avoid overwriting an existing mod until the backup and rollback copy are secure.
- Install dependencies. Repeat the same process for every library or framework listed as required. A missing dependency can prevent the main mod from loading even when its own files are present.
- Install the corresponding client files. For a client-and-server mod, each player must install the client component as directed by the author. A server-only mod does not automatically install anything for players.
- Start the server with only this change. Wait for the process to finish loading, then connect with one test player before adding another mod.
- Check the result. Confirm that the server reaches its normal ready state, the test player can join, and the mod’s documented feature appears. Stop and restore the backup if the world fails to load or behaves unexpectedly.
Keep every player on a compatible setup
Multiplayer compatibility is a set-matching problem. The server must have the server-side portion of every required mod. Each player must run the client-side portion where the mod requires it, and everyone must use a compatible Core Keeper game build.
- Give players the exact mod names and versions you installed; “I subscribed to it” is not enough to establish a matching file set.
- Have players remove obsolete copies before installing a replacement, so two versions of the same mod are not loaded together.
- When an author lists load-order or dependency requirements, share those instructions with every player.
- Test with one player first. A successful local launch does not prove that a client with a different build or mod version can connect.
Workshop and mod.io: what they are and are not
Both Steam Workshop and mod.io are player-facing ways to obtain releases. Neither one, by itself, feeds files into a standalone dedicated-server installation. The operator still has to download the server copy and extract it into the server’s local Mods directory.

This distinction explains a common failed installation: a player sees a mod in the subscribed list, while the server has no corresponding directory and therefore starts vanilla. The remedy is not another subscription; it is a manual server download and extraction, followed by the client installation required by the mod.
Updating and removing mods safely
Updates are manual
Manually installed server mods do not update themselves. Check the mod’s release page after every Core Keeper patch and before inviting players back. A game update can change behavior even when the mod’s files have not changed.

Use a staged update:
- Stop the server and back up the worlds and the current mod directories.
- Record the currently working mod names and versions.
- Read the new release notes and dependency requirements.
- Replace one mod at a time, retaining the old folder outside the active
Modsdirectory for rollback. - Start the server and test the world before changing the next mod.
- Distribute the same updated client files to players when the mod requires client installation.
Remove a mod
Stop the server, back up the worlds, and move the mod’s subfolder out of the active Mods directory instead of deleting it immediately. Start the server and test on a copy of the world first. Some mods add content that a world may continue to reference after the files are removed; the mod author’s removal guidance takes precedence over a generic uninstall.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The server starts, but the mod does nothing
- Confirm that the files are under the server’s
CoreKeeperServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Modspath, not only in a client profile. - Check the directory spelling and capitalization: it must be
Mods. - Inspect the extracted archive for an extra nesting level. If the author supplied a folder that should be copied as one unit, preserve that layout; if the instructions require the mod files directly in the named subfolder, remove only the unnecessary wrapper folder.
- Verify that the mod is intended to run on a dedicated server rather than only on a client.
- Confirm that the release matches the server’s Core Keeper build.
The server refuses to load after adding a mod
Stop the server, move the newest mod folder out of the active directory, and restore the last known-good world backup if needed. Start the vanilla or previously working set. If it works, add the suspect mod again only after checking its dependencies and compatibility notes. This one-change rollback is more reliable than removing several folders at once.
Players cannot join or are disconnected
- Compare the server’s game build with each player’s build.
- Compare the complete mod list and versions, not just the number of installed mods.
- Install client files for every mod marked as client-and-server.
- Check dependencies on the client as well as on the server when the author lists them for both sides.
- Test with a single player using a clean, matching client setup to separate a server problem from a local client conflict.
A Linux server does not load a mod that works on Windows
First verify the mod’s operating-system support. Some community reports describe Windows-only components being skipped on Linux, but that is not a universal rule for all Core Keeper mods. Check the author’s current documentation, then test the mod by itself on a backed-up world. Do not assume that changing the folder name or permissions will make a Windows-only component portable.
An update breaks a previously working world
Stop testing on the live world. Restore the pre-update world backup and the previous mod versions, then confirm that the old combination loads. Once the server is stable, test the new game build and each mod update separately. Keep the rollback copy until players have successfully joined and the world has been backed up again.

A maintainable server layout
Use names that let you identify a mod without opening every archive, and keep a simple text record of the active versions, dependencies, game build, and date of the last successful test. Store retired versions outside the active Mods folder so the server cannot accidentally load duplicate copies.
A practical change routine is:
- One change per maintenance window.
- One dated world backup before the change.
- One test join after the server starts.
- One rollback path that does not require reconstructing the previous download.
This routine matters more than the download source. The server only sees the files present in its local directory, and a bad combination can affect the world even when every individual mod appears trustworthy.

What to verify when documentation conflicts
Do not rely on an old guide for volatile details. Workshop availability has been described differently by community guides, and configuration-folder advice is inconsistent. Before publishing or applying a version-specific setup, verify the current official modding documentation, the dedicated-server release notes, and the individual mod’s installation page. The stable principle is that subscriptions do not install server files; the exact folder and configuration behavior should be confirmed for the game build you are running.
