Use the DayZ Central Economy (CE), not an admin-spawn menu, to make modded items appear as normal loot. Install the mod on the server, copy its supplied economy XML into a separate folder inside the active mission, register those files in the mission-root cfgeconomycore.xml, then tune the item’s types and spawnabletypes entries. Restart the server and read the CE logs before judging spawn behavior.

What controls modded loot in DayZ

DayZ Standalone’s Central Economy is a server-side system. It reads XML files from the active mission folder, tracks how many copies of each item exist, and schedules replacements over time. A client can display an item in an administrator menu without that item being configured for natural loot; menu visibility and CE registration are separate systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The CE works from two related definitions:

  • types data sets the population target, respawn threshold, lifetime, restock delay, counting rules, and eligible location tags.
  • spawnabletypes data describes what a spawned parent entity may contain, such as magazines, optics, clothing attachments, cargo, and randomized damage or quantity ranges.

The most update-resistant arrangement is to leave the stock db/ files alone. Put each mod’s economy files in its own mission subfolder and register that folder through cfgeconomycore.xml. This keeps custom work identifiable, prevents a vanilla update from overwriting it, and makes it easier to disable one mod without rewriting the whole economy.

Prerequisites and compatibility checks

Install the mod on the server

Add the mod to the server’s startup mod list in the same way you install any other server-side DayZ mod. If the author supplies a key file, copy it to the server’s keys/ directory. Follow the mod’s own ServerFiles or installation notes: filenames, required XML files, and dependency order differ between mods.

The classname in an economy file must be registered by the server-side mod actually loaded at startup. If the XML refers to a classname from a missing or incompatible mod, the CE cannot create that item even when the XML syntax is valid.

Back up before editing

Stop the server or use a maintenance window, then make a dated copy of the entire active mission folder. Keep a second copy of the original cfgeconomycore.xml. XML parse errors can prevent expected economy data from loading, and a backup is faster than reconstructing a working configuration.

Know which mission is active

Typical paths look like mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplus/, but the exact folder depends on the map and your startup parameters. The mission selected at launch is the one whose economy files matter; editing a different map’s mission folder has no effect.

Understand the mission-folder layout

Inside an active mission, core economy files are normally under db/, while configuration files beginning with cfg are at the mission root. A simplified layout is:

mpmissions/
└── dayzOffline.chernarusplus/
    ├── cfgeconomycore.xml
    ├── cfggameplay.json (if used by your setup)
    ├── db/
    │   ├── economy.xml
    │   ├── events.xml
    │   ├── globals.xml
    │   ├── types.xml
    │   └── cfgspawnabletypes.xml
    └── nightpatrol_ce/
        ├── np_types.xml
        └── np_spawnabletypes.xml

The names in this example are illustrative. Use the filenames supplied by the mod and reference those exact names in the registration block. Simply dropping an extra XML file into db/ does nothing unless the CE is told to load it.

Step-by-step: register a mod’s loot files

1. Create a dedicated CE folder

Under the mission root, create a folder named for the mod, such as nightpatrol_ce/. Copy the mod’s population file (for example, np_types.xml) into it. If the mod includes a spawnable-contents file, copy that too. Keeping files separate avoids editing the very large vanilla economy file, which is approximately 23,000 lines in the directory-structure reference used for DayZ configurations.

2. Open the mission-root registration file

Edit cfgeconomycore.xml in the mission root, not a similarly named file inside an unrelated mod directory. Retain the existing vanilla rootclass entries. Add a ce block for your folder:

<economycore>
    <classes>
        <rootclass name="DefaultWeapon" />
        <rootclass name="DefaultMagazine" />
        <rootclass name="Inventory_Base" />
        <!-- retain every other existing vanilla rootclass entry -->
    </classes>
    <ce folder="nightpatrol_ce">
        <file name="np_types.xml" type="types" />
        <file name="np_spawnabletypes.xml" type="spawnabletypes" />
    </ce>
</economycore>

Do not duplicate the outer <economycore> element if the file already has one. Insert the ce element inside that existing root. The folder name is relative to the mission root, and the file names are case-sensitive on many server hosts.

3. Match each file to a supported type

The type attribute tells the CE how to parse a file. Supported types documented for the economy include types, spawnabletypes, globals, economy, events, and messages. Game version 1.28 documentation also supports randompresets. Do not label a population file as spawnabletypes, or the reverse; a syntactically well-formed XML file can still be ignored or rejected when its schema type is wrong.

4. Validate the XML before restarting

Check that every opening tag has a closing tag, attributes use straight quotation marks, and there is only one document root. Remove smart quotes introduced by a word processor. If you maintain several mods, give each folder and filename a unique name so an administrator can identify the source of an error immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a correct types entry

A population file contains one type block per classname. A representative structure is:

<type name="NP_PatrolRifle">
    <nominal>12</nominal>
    <lifetime>7200</lifetime>
    <restock>0</restock>
    <min>4</min>
    <quantmin>30</quantmin>
    <quantmax>100</quantmax>
    <cost>100</cost>
    <flags count_in_map="1" count_in_player="0" count_in_cargo="1" count_in_hoarder="1" />
    <category name="weapons" />
    <usage name="Military" />
    <value name="Tier3" />
</type>

Use the values supplied or recommended by the mod author as your starting point. The important fields mean:

Element or attribute What it controls Practical effect
name Exact server classname Must match the class exposed by the installed mod, including capitalization.
nominal Target population The CE attempts to maintain this many counted copies under the selected flags.
min Respawn threshold When the counted population falls below this level, replacement scheduling can begin.
lifetime Seconds an untouched item may remain Shorter values recycle abandoned loot sooner; they do not force an immediate spawn.
restock Restock delay in seconds Controls the delay used when the CE schedules replenishment.
quantmin/quantmax Quantity range for stackable or liquid items Values are percentages for many item types; follow the mod’s schema for exceptions.
cost Spawn cost weighting Higher-cost entries can compete differently for event or loot resources.
flags Where copies count Map, cargo, hoarder, and player-inventory flags determine whether those copies satisfy the target.
category, usage, value Classification and location eligibility They connect an item to building types and map tiers defined by the server’s limits files.

nominal is not a guaranteed number of items visible at once. The CE counts copies according to the flags, excludes or includes locations accordingly, and replaces items on its own schedule. A high nominal value can therefore make an item common over time without producing a pile of copies immediately after a restart.

Put loot in the intended locations

Usage tags select building groups

Tags such as Military, Police, Town, or other names supplied by the map’s limits definitions determine which location groups are eligible. A weapon tagged only for military usage will not naturally appear in ordinary residential buildings.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Value tags select tiers

Value tags such as Tier1 through Tier4 restrict an item to economic tiers. The exact valid names are defined by the server’s limits-definition files and can vary with the map or mission. If you invent a tag that is not declared there, the item may be rejected or have no eligible location.

Test location logic systematically

  1. Confirm the item’s usage and value names exactly match declared limits.
  2. Choose a small, known area containing the corresponding building group and tier.
  3. Restart, allow the CE to run, and check several eligible buildings rather than one room.
  4. If nothing appears, temporarily use a broad, valid usage/tier combination to distinguish a registration problem from an overly narrow location rule.

Add magazines, optics, attachments, and cargo

A types entry defines that an entity can spawn; it does not tell the CE what is inside it. To make a rifle appear with a magazine, optic, clothing attachment, or cargo, add a matching block to the registered spawnabletypes file. A simplified pattern is:

<type name="NP_PatrolRifle">
    <attachments chance="1.0">
        <item name="NP_RifleMagazine" chance="1.0" />
        <item name="NP_RedDot" chance="0.35" />
    </attachments>
    <cargo chance="0.25">
        <item name="BandageDressing" chance="1.0" />
    </cargo>
    <damage min="0.0" max="0.35" />
</type>

Use the exact element names and nesting supplied with your game version or mod template; the example demonstrates the relationship, not a universal drop-in schema. Attachment classnames must also be provided by loaded mods. If the parent weapon appears empty, check this file first: adding more population entries will not create contents.

Use random presets for shared pools

When several weapons should draw from the same magazine or optic pool, use a random-preset definition if the mod provides one. This avoids repeating long item lists and lets you change one pool instead of editing every weapon block. Register the preset file with the supported randompresets type where your server version accepts it.

Control quantity and damage deliberately

Attachments can be configured with probabilities, while cargo may have its own chance and quantity rules. Damage ranges prevent every high-value item from being pristine. Keep the range narrow while testing so you can distinguish a successful spawn from a deliberately damaged result.

Root classes and custom categories

Most modded items inherit from standard roots such as Inventory_Base, DefaultWeapon, or DefaultMagazine. They normally need no new root-class declaration. A mod that introduces a hierarchy outside those roots must declare the genuinely new root class in the classes section of cfgeconomycore.xml.

The same principle applies to custom category, usage, and value tags. Declaring a tag in a types file does not create it. The corresponding limits-definition files must know that tag and map it to eligible locations or tiers. Add only names required by the mod; unnecessary custom classes and tags increase the chance of conflicts with another economy package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart and verify the server-side CE

  1. Stop the server cleanly after saving the XML files.
  2. Start it with the intended map and mod list.
  3. Read the server-side CE logs for XML parse, unknown-class, registration, or limits-definition errors.
  4. Visit a controlled test area that matches the item’s usage and value tags.
  5. Check both the parent item and its expected attachments or cargo.
  6. Leave the server running long enough for the CE’s restock and lifetime behavior to be observable; a single immediate check is not a population test.

The CE continuously compares counted copies with nominal and min. It can remove untouched items after their lifetime expires and schedule replacements. Because this state is maintained on the server, clients cannot inspect the CE database directly; logs, controlled observations, and repeat restarts are the practical verification tools.

Troubleshoot the symptoms that matter

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Item appears in an administrator menu but never as world loot Unregistered file, wrong classname, or disabled economy subsystem Verify the exact classname, confirm the folder and file are inside a <ce> block, and check economy.xml has the dynamic and building subsystems enabled.
XML loads but no copies appear Usage/value tags have no eligible locations, or the CE has not reached a restock cycle Check limits definitions, broaden to a valid test tier, and allow the server to run through its scheduling interval.
Item spawns in unexpected buildings Overly broad or incorrect usage/value tags Map the item to the intended building group and tier; remove tags that are not needed.
Weapon is present but empty No matching spawnabletypes entry Add the parent classname and its attachment/cargo definitions to the registered spawnable file.
Loot is far too common or rare Population and counting settings do not match the design Tune nominal, min, lifetime, restock, and flags together. Remember that copies in map, cargo, hoards, or player inventory count only when their flags are enabled.
A vanilla update removes custom loot Custom entries were inserted into stock db/ files Move additions to a dedicated registered folder and restore the untouched vanilla files.
Two mods behave unpredictably Duplicate classnames or overlapping definitions Use unique classnames where possible and inspect load order. When registered files define the same name, the last-loaded entry wins.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Tune abundance without destabilizing the economy

Start with a small population

Begin with a conservative nominal and a lower min while testing. This reduces the time needed to identify a malformed location rule and limits the effect of a typo that accidentally makes a rare weapon common. Raise the target only after the item appears in the correct places and the logs remain clean.

Understand counting flags before changing numbers

If count_in_cargo and count_in_hoarder are enabled, players can remove many copies from the map while those copies still satisfy the target. If those flags are disabled, the CE may keep replacing items even though players have stockpiled them. Choose flags based on whether you want a total-world quota or a visible-ground quota.

Use lifetime and restock as pacing controls

lifetime controls how long an untouched item may remain, while restock affects when replenishment is scheduled. Reducing both can create rapid turnover, but it can also make loot disappear before players reach it. Adjust one variable at a time and observe several complete cycles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare two installation approaches

Decision area Dedicated registered files Direct edits to vanilla files
Installation Create a mod folder and register each file in cfgeconomycore.xml. Paste entries into stock db/ files.
Update resilience Custom files remain separate when vanilla files are replaced. Changes can be overwritten or become difficult to merge.
Population tuning Each mod’s nominal, min, lifetime, restock, and flags are easy to audit. All mods and vanilla entries are mixed in one large file.
Attachments and cargo Registered spawnable definitions stay beside the mod’s types file. Parent and content definitions may be scattered across stock files.
Conflict handling Unique names and visible load order make collisions easier to locate. Duplicate entries are harder to attribute after merges.

Direct edits can work on a private test server, but the separate-folder method is safer for a persistent server because it preserves a clean baseline and makes rollback explicit.

Maintain a multi-mod server

  • Give every mod a unique mission subfolder and descriptive filenames.
  • Keep a change log listing the classname, intended locations, population values, and date of each change.
  • After a DayZ or map update, diff the stock mission files against your backup rather than blindly copying old files over the new mission.
  • Recheck custom root classes and limits definitions when a mod changes its inheritance tree or location tags.
  • When disabling a mod, remove or comment its registration block only after removing references to its classnames from other spawnable files.
  • Restart and read logs after every XML change; do not batch unrelated edits when diagnosing a failure.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make loot spawn by editing only the client?

No. The CE runs on the server and reads the server’s active mission files. A client-side menu or local file does not change server population rules.

Why does copying a mod’s XML into db/ have no effect?

The CE loads additional files only when they are registered under a mission-root <ce> element in cfgeconomycore.xml. The filename’s presence in db/ is not registration.

Do all modded items need a new root class?

No. Items inheriting from Inventory_Base, DefaultWeapon, or DefaultMagazine generally use existing roots. Declare a new root only when the mod’s hierarchy truly falls outside those classes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my item in the right building type but the wrong map tier?

Its value tag is selecting a different tier from the one you intended, or the tag is mapped differently in that mission’s limits definitions. Check the declared tier names rather than guessing from the item’s appearance.

How long should I wait after a restart?

There is no single universal delay. The CE compares population, lifetime, and restock settings continuously. Inspect logs, verify that the server has completed its startup cycle, and test over enough time to include the configured scheduling interval.
