To add llms.txt to WordPress, publish a Markdown file at your site’s root, or use a plugin that generates and serves it there. Then open the public file URL to confirm it works. The file follows an optional community proposal: it can help readers and AI systems find useful public content, but it does not control crawler access or guarantee search rankings, citations, or AI visibility.

What llms.txt does—and what it does not do

The llms.txt proposal describes a Markdown index of useful content. It is a discoverability convention, not an access-control file: listing a page does not make private content public, and leaving a page out does not prevent crawlers from accessing it. Use authentication, server rules, and your robots policy for access and crawler controls.

The convention remains optional. One WordPress plugin listing says no major search engine or LLM provider has officially announced that it seeks llms.txt files; treat that as the listing’s stated caveat, not a guarantee about every provider’s behavior. There is no basis here to promise ranking improvements, citations, or greater visibility.

What the v2 proposal expects

The proposal allows a file at the site root or a subpath. Its contents cover URLs under that path; when multiple llms.txt files apply, agents should use the most specific one. Check the live proposal before publishing because this is an evolving community convention.

The proposed structure is intentionally simple:

  • An optional byte order mark (BOM).
  • A required H1 naming the project or site.
  • An optional blockquote with a concise summary.
  • An optional preamble with no headings.
  • Zero or more H2 sections, each containing lists of Markdown links.

Include only useful, public pages. Prefer canonical URLs and clear link text; avoid treating the file as a complete sitemap or a place to expose content that should remain private.

Choose how to create and serve the file

You can write and upload the Markdown yourself, or use a WordPress plugin. A plugin’s generation method matters: some write a physical file, while others serve generated content through a rewrite rule or WordPress. Confirm the plugin’s current settings, requirements, output path, and update behavior on its directory page before relying on it.

Plugin options documented for WordPress

Plugin What the cited listing or proposal describes Important checks
Yoast SEO The llms.txt proposal names Yoast SEO as a WordPress integration that generates and maintains llms.txt. Check the current plugin settings and available controls on the proposal and the plugin’s current documentation.
AIOSEO The proposal names AIOSEO as a WordPress plugin with an llms.txt generator. Verify current output, scope controls, and update behavior before enabling it.
Project LLMs.txt – AI SEO & llms.txt for WordPress & WooCommerce Its WordPress.org listing says it can generate /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt. It lists WordPress 6.4+ and PHP 8.1+ requirements, root write access for physical-file mode, and optional WooCommerce 7.0+ for product support. Check whether you want a physical file or another serving mode, and verify the current version and settings in the listing.
Website LLMs.txt Its WordPress.org listing describes a rewrite rule serving /llms.txt and an uploads-folder copy for hosts where the root cannot be written. The retrieved directory result reports version 8.6.2, 40,000+ active installations, and WordPress 5.8+; these are time-sensitive listing details, not evidence of effectiveness. Confirm the current compatibility information and that the rewrite or uploads-based serving method works with your host and caching setup.
CrawlBrief for LLMs.txt Its WordPress.org listing claims support for v2 discovery metadata, Markdown alternates, and corresponding HTTP Link metadata. Verify current implementation and compatibility before relying on these features.

The official proposal names Yoast SEO and AIOSEO as integrations, while the other feature details above come from the respective plugin listings. These sources do not establish a comparable current feature matrix or a definitive ranking of all five options. Choose based on your site’s needs and confirm each plugin’s current implementation; none is presented here as independently tested.

Questions to check before activating a plugin

  • Does it create a physical file or serve generated content dynamically?
  • Does it require permission to write to the site root?
  • Can you control which public content appears, and exclude non-public material?
  • Does it create only an index, or also full Markdown exports?
  • How does it update the file when pages change?
  • Does it support any v2 discovery or alternate-format behavior you specifically need?
  • Do its WordPress, PHP, or optional WooCommerce requirements match your installation?

Add llms.txt to WordPress and verify it

  1. Choose the content. Select a concise set of canonical, public URLs that are genuinely useful to someone navigating your site.
  2. Prepare the Markdown. Follow the v2 order: site-name H1, then optional summary blockquote, optional unheaded preamble, and optional H2 sections with Markdown link lists.
  3. Publish it at the intended path. For a root file, the expected public address is https://your-domain.example/llms.txt. If you use a subpath, keep its scope in mind: the proposal applies the file to URLs beneath that path.
  4. Check the plugin or upload method. For physical-file generation, ensure the plugin or deployment process can write to the required location. For rewrite-based serving, make sure the rule resolves correctly on your host.
  5. Open the public URL. Confirm it returns the intended Markdown rather than a login page, unrelated HTML, an error, or stale cached output. Follow several links to ensure they resolve to canonical public pages.
  6. Recheck after changes. When you change the selected pages or plugin settings, revisit the URL and confirm that the served file reflects the intended content.

How to interpret Lighthouse’s llms.txt audit

Chrome for Developers’ Lighthouse documentation says the audit flags a page if a server error occurs while retrieving llms.txt. If the file is absent and returns 404, the audit is Not Applicable because providing the file is optional at the moment. A 404 is therefore not a failure to meet a required SEO standard.

The audit checks retrieval; it is not documented as a search-ranking test. If you run it, read the result in context:

  • Not Applicable after a 404: Lighthouse did not find an optional file. Add one only if you want to publish the convention.
  • Server error: investigate the URL, hosting response, plugin route, rewrite rules, and any caching or security layer that may interfere with retrieval.
  • Successful retrieval: still inspect the Markdown itself and confirm that its links are useful and public.
