To add a legal streaming service to Kodi, install Kodi from an official source, open its built-in add-on catalogue, choose a video add-on for the service you want, and select Install. Then launch the add-on and complete any provider sign-in or subscription step it requires. Kodi is the player and media-centre software; it is not a streaming subscription and does not supply a single Netflix-style catalogue.
What “adding a streaming service” means in Kodi
Kodi’s reference application is a media centre and player. It does not include paid streaming memberships, television channels, or a universal library when you install it. Team Kodi’s own guidance puts the distinction plainly: “As supplied, reference Kodi does not ship with any media at all, nor are any media-providing addons pre-installed.” You add access by installing an individual add-on that connects Kodi to a broadcaster or service.
The official Kodi repository contains video add-ons that can stream internet content. The catalogue is not static: available entries depend on your Kodi version, the add-on maintainer, the provider’s service, and your country. An add-on appearing in Kodi does not guarantee that every programme is available in your region, that the provider still supports the client, or that the add-on replaces the provider’s own application.

- A supported device and internet connection: Kodi runs on multiple operating systems and device platforms. A computer, compatible television device, or other supported hardware is optional; Kodi does not require one particular box, remote, or brand.
- The official Kodi application: Download it through the Kodi Foundation’s official download route or a platform source identified there.
- A current Kodi version: Add-on availability is version-specific. The examples in this article come from the Omega (version 21) directory.
- Provider credentials when required: Have a free account, paid subscription, or television-provider login ready if the selected listing requires one.
- Permission to use the service in your territory: A provider may license programmes only in particular countries. Kodi cannot legitimately turn a regional service into a worldwide catalogue.
There is no universal Kodi subscription fee and no mandatory hardware purchase for this setup. You pay separately only when the chosen service requires an account or subscription, and you remain subject to that provider’s pricing and terms.

Install the reference Kodi application
Use the official download route and a stable release for ordinary viewing. Menu wording, remote controls, and the add-ons offered can vary by platform and release. Avoid installers or “fully loaded” packages that bundle unknown repositories. They can change Kodi’s configuration, include unsupported software, or provide streams without the necessary rights.
Check your Kodi version
Open Settings and look for the system-information or version screen; the exact path differs slightly by skin and platform. The official catalogue checked for this guide is the Kodi Omega line, version 21. If you use an older or newer release, an add-on shown in the Omega directory may be absent, renamed, incompatible, or temporarily unavailable.
Have the provider details ready
Some add-ons work without a separate account, while others require a free account, a paid subscription, or an existing television-provider login. Keep the credentials for the service you chose available, and confirm that the service is offered in your country before troubleshooting Kodi. Installing an add-on does not create a subscription or bypass a paywall.
How to install an official video add-on
1. Open Kodi’s add-on area
- Start Kodi and select Add-ons from the home screen.
- Choose the option to browse or download add-ons. Depending on your version and skin, it may be labelled Get More, Download, or appear as an open-box icon.
- Select the Video add-ons category.
This is Kodi’s in-app catalogue, not a random website list. It shows the add-ons available to your installation and repository configuration. The catalogue supports installation inside Kodi and can deliver updates through the repository.
2. Read the listing before installing
Open an add-on’s detail page and check its description, maintainer, supported Kodi versions, country or region notes, and any account or subscription requirement. Look for whether it provides live channels, on-demand programmes, or both. Treat a listing’s availability as a starting point: broadcaster rights and online services can change after an add-on is published.
Some entries use the word unofficial. In the official Kodi repository, that generally describes the relationship between the add-on client and the named provider; it is not a statement that the provider endorses the Kodi add-on. Read the listing and the provider’s terms rather than inferring approval from the catalogue’s presence.

3. Select Install
- On the detail page, select Install.
- Allow Kodi to install any dependencies that the add-on identifies.
- Wait for Kodi’s confirmation notification, then return to the video add-ons list.
Official-repository add-ons can receive updates through Kodi. Automatic updating does not mean that a provider will maintain the add-on indefinitely, so revisit the detail page if playback stops after a service changes its website or authentication system. Do not replace a missing dependency with a ZIP file from an unknown site.

4. Launch the add-on and authenticate
- Open Add-ons and select the installed video add-on.
- Choose the programme, channel, or service section you want to watch.
- If prompted, follow the add-on’s sign-in or activation instructions. Enter credentials only in the add-on’s documented sign-in flow.
A successful installation does not itself grant access to subscription content. If the provider requires a paid plan, you must hold that plan separately, subject to the provider’s terms and territory. Some services use a browser activation code rather than asking for a password directly in Kodi; follow the method described by the listing.
5. Test playback and record the limitation
Play one live item and one on-demand item when both are offered. Note whether the add-on asks for a login, rejects your country, or reports that a programme is unavailable. These observations distinguish a Kodi installation problem from a provider-rights or account problem. A single missing episode can be a rights restriction even when other titles play normally.

The Omega directory lists a mixture of public broadcasters, children’s programming, sports and other internet video services. The entries below are examples, not a guarantee of availability on every device, in every country, or for every account.

Regional broadcaster entries appear alongside these examples. Because the catalogue and provider websites are volatile, open the individual detail page immediately before installation and read its current maintainer, status, territory, and authentication notes.

When several listings appear to serve the same audience, compare them on practical rather than purely descriptive criteria:

- Access model: Separate free viewing, a free account, and a paid subscription. The add-on may be free to install while the content remains paywalled.
- Content type: Decide whether you need live television, on-demand episodes, films, children’s programmes, sports, or a combination.
- Version support: Compare the listing’s supported Kodi versions with the version shown in your installation.
- Maintenance: Check the last update or status information shown by Kodi. A working installation can still fail later if a provider changes its authentication or playback system.
- Source relationship: Read whether the client is an official provider application, a community-maintained client, or marked unofficial. That label describes the relationship; it is not a substitute for checking the provider’s own terms.
Official repository versus third-party repositories
Team Kodi says its official repository is vetted and audited. It also states that third-party repositories are not made, supported, or endorsed by Team Kodi. In its September 21, 2019 guidance: “As the name suggests, these third party addons and repos are neither produced by, supported by nor endorsed by Team Kodi.”
For a legal-streaming setup, stay with the repository that Kodi provides and avoid instructions that tell you to enable unknown sources. A web page calling an add-on “official” does not make it part of Kodi’s official repository. Some third-party add-ons provide pirated media, according to Team Kodi; installing one can create copyright, security, privacy, and account risks.
The repository label also does not settle the legal status of everything you watch. Team Kodi distinguishes the reference application from user-selected add-ons and content. Whether a particular stream is lawful depends on the service’s rights, your location, your account, and your use. Treat this guide as a setup explanation, not a legal opinion for your jurisdiction.
What to do when an add-on does not work
The add-on is missing from the catalogue
- Check the installed Kodi version and compare it with the add-on’s stated support.
- Return to the Video add-ons category rather than searching an old web tutorial.
- Update Kodi only through the official distribution route, then check the catalogue again.
- Accept that an entry may have been withdrawn or may not be published for your platform or region.
Installation fails or a dependency cannot be installed
- Confirm that Kodi can reach the internet and that your device has available storage.
- Retry from the add-on’s detail page so Kodi can show the specific dependency error.
- Restart Kodi and check for a normal repository update.
- Do not solve a dependency error by downloading a replacement ZIP from an unknown site; that changes the trust model of the installation.
Playback fails after installation
- Test another programme in the same add-on. One unavailable title may reflect programme rights rather than a broken installation.
- Check whether the provider requires you to sign in again or maintain a paid subscription.
- Confirm your device date, time, and internet connection; authentication tokens can fail when the clock is wrong.
- Read the current add-on description for service-status or version notes.
- If the provider’s website or application is also unavailable, wait for the provider to restore service instead of repeatedly reinstalling Kodi.
You see a country or territory message
Do not assume that changing a Kodi setting grants rights to a catalogue licensed for another country. Check the service’s stated territory and account terms. If your country is not listed, choose a service that officially operates there or use the provider’s supported application.
The add-on asks for credentials unexpectedly
Stop and read the add-on’s detail page. Some services legitimately require an account; others may use an activation code rather than asking for a password directly in Kodi. Never provide credentials to an add-on obtained from an untrusted repository, and avoid reusing a password if the sign-in flow does not clearly belong to the provider or documented client.
Keeping the setup reliable
Update deliberately
Kodi can update official add-ons through its repository. Review an add-on after an update if its sign-in flow, menu, or playback behaviour changes. Keep Kodi itself on a supported stable release unless you specifically need a newer version for a documented compatibility reason. When an update removes an entry or changes its requirements, read the new detail page instead of assuming your account has failed.

Keep a small inventory
Record each installed add-on, the service account it uses, its territory, and whether it is live or on-demand. This makes it easier to remove an abandoned client and prevents you from confusing a provider outage with a Kodi problem. Also note whether the service is free, account-only, or subscription-based so another household user does not mistake installation for entitlement.

Streaming services can limit simultaneous devices, recording, redistribution, or playback outside a home country. Installing a Kodi client does not waive those conditions. Read the provider’s current terms and privacy information, especially before entering an account that you also use on other devices.

No. Kodi offers a common interface for the add-ons available to your version and platform, but it is not a universal hub. A service may have no Kodi add-on, may restrict its client to certain countries, may require a subscription, or may support only its own application. Use Kodi when the service’s current official-repository add-on meets your needs; otherwise use the provider’s supported app or website.
Is Kodi legal?
The software itself is a general-purpose media centre. Team Kodi’s published guidance separates that reference software from the add-ons a user chooses and the media those add-ons deliver. The practical question is therefore not simply whether “Kodi” is legal, but whether the particular add-on and stream are authorised for your location, account, and use.
