Add a keyword in the Mac Photos app by selecting a photo, opening its Info window, typing in the keyword field, and pressing Return. To find that keyword on your iPhone, turn on iCloud Photos on both devices, use the same Apple Account, and let the library finish syncing. Then open the photo’s Info panel on iPhone to view or edit its keywords, or search Photos for the term.

What photo keywords do—and what syncing requires

Keywords are tags or labels attached to photos and videos. They give you another way to describe an item besides its file name, date, place, people, or album. Apple describes keywords as labels that help you find photos more easily. A keyword can identify a subject (bird), a project (renovation), a trip (Kyoto-2026), or a use (website).

You can apply one keyword to one item, or apply the same keyword to a selection of items. Once the term is attached, Photos can use it in search. The Mac is especially useful for a large tagging session because you can select many items and maintain a reusable vocabulary. The iPhone is convenient when you need to tag or check one item away from your Mac.

For a keyword added on the Mac to appear on the same item on your iPhone, both devices need access to the same iCloud Photos library. Turn on iCloud Photos on the Mac and iPhone, sign in with the same Apple Account, and allow the library to finish updating. A keyword edit can take time to propagate. A cable-based Finder photo sync is a different process and should not be treated as synchronization of one iCloud Photos library’s keyword metadata.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Add a keyword to photos on your Mac

Tag one photo

  1. Open Photos on your Mac.
  2. Click the photo you want to tag.
  3. Click the Info button in the toolbar.
  4. In the Info window, click Add a Keyword or the existing keyword field.
  5. Type the term and press Return. Photos may suggest terms that you have used previously.
  6. Close the Info window.

The keyword is now part of that photo’s metadata in the Photos library. You do not need to create a separate album or rename the file to make the term searchable. If you want more than one descriptor, repeat the process for each keyword.

Apply the same keyword to several photos

  1. In Photos, select the first item.
  2. Hold the appropriate selection key while clicking additional photos, or select a continuous range as appropriate for your view.
  3. Click Info.
  4. Enter a keyword in the Add a Keyword field and press Return.
  5. Check the selection and the Info panel before closing it.

When multiple items are selected, the entered term is applied to that selection. This is useful for tagging an entire event, a set of scans, or a group of images destined for the same project. Selection mistakes are the main batch-tagging pitfall: verify the count and thumbnails before committing a term, particularly when the selection spans several dates.

Remove a keyword from one item

Select the photo, open its Info window, click the keyword you want to remove, and press Delete. This removes the label from that item; it does not delete the photo, move it to Recently Deleted, or remove any other keywords. If the same term is on other photos, those items are unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Keyword Manager for repeated tagging

For occasional edits, the Info window is enough. If you tag regularly, open Window > Keyword Manager in Photos on Mac. Keyword Manager is designed for assigning existing terms quickly and for keeping your keyword vocabulary consistent.

With photos selected, click a keyword in Keyword Manager to assign it. Click an assigned keyword again to remove it from the current selection. This lets you toggle several labels without reopening each item’s Info window. It is particularly efficient when a group needs a combination such as a location term and a project term.

Choose Edit Keywords in Keyword Manager to maintain the list. You can:

  • Add a new keyword to the vocabulary.
  • Rename an existing keyword.
  • Remove a keyword from all photos.
  • Assign or change a keyboard shortcut for a term.

Be careful with the scope of the remove command. Removing a keyword from all photos changes every item carrying that term, while clicking a keyword to remove it from a selection changes only the selected items. If a term is already used widely, renaming or globally removing it is a library-wide decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create a Quick Group

Drag frequently used keywords into Quick Group in Keyword Manager. Quick Group creates a short list of terms that are easy to pick during tagging, and those terms also appear in the Filter By menu. A Quick Group does not create a duplicate copy of a keyword and does not move photos; it is a convenient way to expose the terms you use most.

Use a stable naming scheme before you build a large vocabulary. For example, decide whether a project is written as Website or website, and use one form consistently. Consistency makes search results predictable and prevents a library from filling with near-duplicate labels. Photos does not automatically merge differently spelled terms just because they refer to the same subject.

Turn on iCloud Photos on both devices

On the Mac, enable iCloud Photos for the Photos library you want to use. On the iPhone, enable iCloud Photos in the Photos settings. Both devices must be signed in to the same Apple Account, and the Mac must be using the library associated with that account. If you have more than one library on the Mac, confirm that you are editing the library intended to be available on the iPhone.

iCloud Photos keeps the cloud library up to date across devices. That is the mechanism that carries the keyword edit from Mac Photos to iPhone Photos. It is not enough for an image to exist in two places as two independent copies. A file exported on the Mac and separately imported on the iPhone is not necessarily the same library item, and its metadata behavior can differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After adding a keyword, allow the library to update. Sync time depends on the amount of pending library activity and the devices’ account and network conditions. Check the Photos sync status rather than immediately repeating the edit. Repeating an edit before the first change has propagated can create duplicate-looking terms or make it harder to tell which copy you are inspecting.

What does not count as the same sync?

Finder’s cable-based photo synchronization is a separate workflow. It can place photos on a device, but it should not be described as the supported route for synchronizing keyword metadata in one iCloud Photos library. The same caution applies to manually synced folders, exported files that are re-imported separately, and third-party cloud services: their behavior is not established as equivalent to one shared iCloud Photos library.

View, add, or edit keywords on iPhone

  1. Open Photos on the iPhone.
  2. Open the photo or video you want to inspect.
  3. Tap the Info button, or swipe up on the item to reveal its information.
  4. Tap Add Keywords and enter a term.
  5. If the item already has keywords, tap Edit in the keyword field to change them.
  6. Tap Done.

The Info panel is useful for checking whether a Mac edit has arrived. If the term is listed there, the metadata is attached to that iPhone item even if you have not yet searched for it. You can add another term without replacing the existing ones, or edit the keyword field when you need to change the item’s labels.

Apple’s current iPhone Photos guidance covers keywords on photos and videos. The exact placement of controls can change with a major iOS release, but the Info or swipe-up panel is the place to look for the item’s metadata.

Manage the keyword vocabulary on iPhone

For library-level cleanup, open Collections, use the profile control, and choose Manage Keywords. Apple’s guidance describes options to favorite, rename, or delete a keyword. These controls manage the keyword list rather than just editing one photo. Treat rename and delete actions as vocabulary changes: review the scope before confirming, especially for a term used on many items.

Search by keyword on Mac or iPhone

Search on Mac

Click the Photos search field and type the keyword. Photos suggests searches as you type, which can help you choose the existing term rather than creating a spelling variant. The Mac guide also says that multiple words separated by a space can be used to search for multiple keywords.

You can use Filter By for terms placed in Quick Group. Filtering is helpful when you have a small set of high-use labels and want to narrow a view without typing the complete term each time. If a search returns unexpected items, inspect their Info windows: the term may be present as a keyword alongside other metadata that also matches the search.

Search on iPhone

Tap Search in Photos and enter the keyword. Apple’s guide identifies keyword results with an Aa marker, helping distinguish a keyword match from other search categories. Tap a result to open the matching item.

If the keyword is missing from the results, open one expected photo, swipe up or tap Info, and verify that the term is actually attached. Then check iCloud Photos and the sync status. Search indexing and cloud updates can lag behind an edit, so allow the library to finish updating before concluding that the keyword failed.

Troubleshoot a keyword that is missing on iPhone

  • Verify the Mac edit: Reopen the photo’s Info window and confirm that the keyword appears. If it is absent, add it again and press Return.
  • Verify the selected items: For a batch edit, make sure the intended photo was selected. A keyword is applied only to the items selected when you enter it.
  • Confirm the account: Check that the Mac and iPhone use the same Apple Account. Different accounts can show different iCloud Photos libraries.
  • Confirm the library: If the Mac has more than one Photos library, make sure the active one is the iCloud Photos library connected to the iPhone.
  • Check iCloud Photos: It must be enabled on both devices for this cross-device library workflow.
  • Wait for synchronization: Look at the Photos sync status and allow pending updates to complete. A delayed result is not proof that the metadata was discarded.
  • Inspect the exact item: Open the same photo in iPhone Photos and inspect Info. A separately imported copy may look identical but be a different library item.
  • Search the exact term: Try the spelling shown in the Info panel. Near-duplicate spellings, punctuation, or spacing can produce different searches.
  • Do not substitute Finder sync: A cable-based Finder transfer is not the documented equivalent of iCloud Photos library synchronization for keywords.
  • Check the iPhone index: If Info shows the term but Search does not, give Photos time to update its search index and try again.

Can you add keywords on iCloud.com?

Apple’s iCloud Photos interface on iCloud.com also documents adding and editing keyword metadata. This can be useful when you are working from a browser rather than the Mac app or iPhone. Keyword search on iCloud.com requires Data Access and Search to be allowed in the relevant account settings.

iCloud.com is another interface to the cloud library, not a separate tagging system you should expect to behave like an independent folder. For a Mac-to-iPhone workflow, the essential setup remains one iCloud Photos library, the same Apple Account, and enough time for updates to complete.

What happens to keywords when you export?

Apple’s 2026 Camera and Photo Technologies Group Lab session says keywords appear in IPTC metadata when an item is exported. IPTC is a standard metadata container used by many photo-management and publishing tools. If the receiving application preserves and reads IPTC fields, the exported file can carry the keyword with it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That statement does not guarantee that every destination will display the term. Some services strip metadata, some show only selected IPTC fields, and some hide metadata even when it is present. If a keyword matters outside Photos, inspect the receiving workflow rather than assuming that an export will look identical everywhere.

Developer limitation: PhotoKit keyword queries

The same Apple developer session explains that keywords can be viewed and edited in the iOS Photos Info panel, searched in Photos, and reflected in IPTC metadata on export. It also states that there is currently no PhotoKit-level API for fetching or querying assets based on these keywords.

For ordinary Photos users, this means the app interface is the supported way to add, edit, and search. For developers, it means an app should not promise a PhotoKit keyword-query feature based on that session’s statement. The session discusses iOS 27, so this API limitation is version-sensitive and should be checked again when Apple changes the platform.

Mac or iPhone: which workflow is better?

Task Mac Photos iPhone Photos
Apply one keyword to many selected items Select the items and enter the term in the Info window, or use Keyword Manager. The cited iPhone guidance describes item-level entry, not a comparable batch workflow.
Reuse an established vocabulary Keyword Manager supports adding, renaming, removing, shortcuts, and Quick Group. Manage Keywords supports favoriting, renaming, and deleting terms.
Tag one item quickly Open Info and enter the term. Open Info or swipe up, then add or edit keywords.
Search Use the search field; use Filter By for Quick Group terms. Use Search; keyword matches are marked “Aa.”
Work while away from the Mac Requires the Mac Photos library. Use the iPhone’s own Info and Search controls once the library is available.

Do you need to buy anything?

No camera accessory, external drive, keyboard, or photo-organizing guide is required. The workflow uses Photos and iCloud Photos features built into Apple’s devices and services. If the library exceeds the iCloud storage available to the Apple Account, additional storage may become a separate practical requirement, but there is no product purchase needed specifically to create or search keywords. Avoid treating an accessory as a prerequisite for this task.

Practical keyword habits

Use terms that answer questions you are likely to ask later: what is shown, where it was taken, which project it belongs to, or how you plan to use it. Keep labels short enough to recognize in search, and reuse an existing term when it already expresses the idea. A consistent vocabulary makes Keyword Manager, Quick Group, Mac search, iPhone search, and exported IPTC metadata more useful.

For batch work, tag in logical groups and verify a sample afterward. For a single edit, confirm the term in the Info panel before closing it. These checks prevent two common errors: assigning a label to the wrong selection and searching for a spelling that is not actually attached.

How do I search for a keyword on iPhone?

Open Photos, tap Search, and enter the term. Apple identifies keyword matches with an Aa marker.

Can I edit keywords directly on iPhone?

Yes. Open the photo or video, tap Info or swipe up, tap Add Keywords, or tap Edit in the existing keyword field, then tap Done.

Are keywords included when I export a photo?

Apple’s 2026 developer session says keywords appear in IPTC metadata on export. Whether another app displays them depends on that app’s metadata support and whether it preserves the fields.

Can an app query the Photos library by keyword through PhotoKit?

The Apple developer session discussed here says there is currently no PhotoKit-level API for fetching or querying assets based on these keywords. That statement is version-sensitive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I manage the keyword list on iPhone?

Yes. Apple’s current guidance places Manage Keywords under Collections and the profile control, with options to favorite, rename, or delete terms.

The Bottom Line

For the cleanest Mac-to-iPhone workflow, add keywords in Mac Photos, use Keyword Manager for batch work and vocabulary control, enable iCloud Photos on both devices with the same Apple Account, and wait for the library to finish syncing. On iPhone, use Info to verify or edit a term and Search to find matching items. Finder transfers and separately imported copies are not substitutes for syncing one shared iCloud Photos library.
