You can reduce the risk of losing your music by confirming it is safely stored on your computer—and making a separate backup—before trying to install games. The steps depend on whether you have a Zune HD or a non-touchscreen Zune, and the historical Marketplace and update services may no longer work.
First, identify your Zune and protect your music
Zune HD and non-touchscreen Zune players used different game-installation routes. Do not follow one model’s steps on the other. Before changing or updating the player, make sure your music exists somewhere other than the device.
- Check the model. Establish whether the player is a Zune HD or a non-touchscreen Zune.
- Check the computer collection. Connect the player and open the Zune software. Confirm that the music you want to keep exists in the computer’s collection and can be found as files outside the player.
- Recover music from the player if necessary. If a track exists only on the Zune, try reverse syncing it before installing anything. In the archived instructions, the route is Device > Music, then right-click the music and choose Copy to my collection. Verify the copied files are in the computer collection before continuing. This recovery is not guaranteed for every device or account state.
- Make a second backup. Copy the computer music folder to separate storage, such as an external drive. Do not treat the Zune itself or the Zune collection as your only copy.
Microsoft’s archived migration answer says reverse syncing does not cover podcasts, friends, or channels, and that Zune Marketplace videos cannot be backed up to CD or DVD. Do not assume every item on the player can be recovered this way. Microsoft’s archived Zune collection migration guidance

Use the game-installation route for your model
Zune HD: select apps in the Zune software and sync
Microsoft’s archived 2011 answer describes choosing Zune HD apps in the Marketplace section of the Zune software and syncing them to the player. If an app does not sync, check the software’s Sync Options. This is a historical procedure, not confirmation that Marketplace access or app downloads still work today. Non-touchscreen Zune: use Player Update
The same archived answer gives this route for a non-touchscreen player: connect it, open Settings > Device > Player Update, and choose Install Games. These are historical instructions; they do not establish that the update service remains available or that installing games is risk-free for a particular device.
If Zune software cannot detect the player
Community documentation reports that Microsoft decommissioned a server used by Zune software for device communication and describes Windows workarounds. Treat these as third-party guidance, not official current support. Some workarounds involve network or registry changes, which can affect system behavior; do not apply them unless you understand the change and have a way to reverse it. What about archived Zune HD game packages?
A community guide describes installing archived app or game packages from the local Applications directory on a Zune HD. These are unofficial files: the guide does not establish the provenance or integrity of every archive, and the method is specific to Zune HD. Before you connect or buy anything
- If you need a sync cable, match it to the exact Zune model; compatibility across models is not established by the cited manual.
- Confirm your computer has the music files and a separate backup before attempting a player update or unofficial installation.
- If a historical service or download is unavailable, do not assume a third-party package is authentic or safe simply because it is described as a Zune game.
