To let a React dialog finish its exit animation, keep its DOM node mounted after the dialog enters the closed state. With Radix Dialog, CSS keyframe animations are the simplest documented route: style both the open and closed states and let Radix wait for the CSS animation before unmounting. If a JavaScript animation library such as Motion must control removal, use Radix’s forceMount support and keep the library’s presence boundary mounted around the child that is exiting.

Why a dialog disappears before its exit animation

An exit animation needs an element to animate. If your render logic removes the dialog as soon as its visibility state becomes false—for example, {open && <Dialog.Content />}—React removes the content from the DOM. The browser then has no element on which to play a closing animation.

The solution is to separate two events that are often treated as one:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Closing: the dialog’s state changes from open to closed. This should update its behavior and provide the signal for the exit effect.
  • Removal: the exiting DOM is finally unmounted after the animation system has finished its work.

Whoever owns removal timing must be able to observe the closed state and retain the relevant node until its exit completes. Radix can do this for CSS animations. With Motion or another JavaScript animation library, the library’s presence lifecycle needs to own the delay, rather than losing its child at the same time as the dialog.

This distinction answers the common question, “Why does my dialog disappear before the transition finishes?” The close-state change is not itself a promise to keep the DOM around. If an application conditional, a parent component, or the dialog primitive removes the node immediately, there is no closing frame for an animation to render. Pick one presence mechanism, then make sure the component it tracks survives the state change long enough to receive and finish its exit.

Choose who controls removal

Start by deciding which system should own the interval between “closed” and “removed.” Avoid having both the dialog primitive and an animation library compete to unmount the same element.

Approach Who controls removal timing Best fit Key requirement
Radix with CSS keyframes Radix observes the CSS animation and suspends unmount until it finishes. A straightforward enter-and-exit effect tied to the dialog’s open and closed states. Keep Radix’s presence lifecycle in charge; define animations for the closed state as well as the open state.
Radix with Motion or another JavaScript animation library The animation library’s presence lifecycle controls when exiting children are removed. When the animation system needs to control exit timing or coordinate more complex effects. Use Radix forceMount on the relevant parts, and keep the presence boundary mounted outside the condition that removes an exiting child.

Radix’s animation guidance distinguishes CSS animations from JavaScript animation libraries: it documents waiting for CSS animations before unmount and provides forceMount so consumers can delegate mounting and unmounting to an animation library. Do not assume that a plain CSS transition gets the same documented unmount handling as a CSS animation.

In practice, the choice is about ownership as much as visual style. If a simple fade or movement is tied to Radix’s open and closed states, CSS keeps the lifecycle close to the primitive and avoids adding another system to coordinate. If Motion needs to sequence or coordinate more complex effects, let Motion own the exit lifecycle explicitly. The extra integration work is worthwhile only when that control is useful: every part that Radix might otherwise remove early needs a clear owner.

Use CSS keyframes with Radix Dialog

For a typical dialog that only needs to fade or move in and out, start with CSS keyframes. Radix exposes data-state values of open and closed on dialog parts, so you can give each state its own animation. Apply the effect to both overlay and content if both should leave the screen together.

1. Let the dialog state drive its lifecycle

Keep the dialog’s content inside the Radix dialog structure rather than removing the entire content with an application-level conditional the instant open becomes false. The change to the closed state should reach the dialog parts so they can run their exit animation; Radix’s built-in presence behavior can then defer unmounting until the CSS animation finishes.

In practical terms, conditionally rendering the dialog’s open state is not the same as conditionally removing its animated DOM. Let the dialog’s open state change, but do not bypass its presence lifecycle by removing the very node that needs to animate. The Dialog API also exposes forceMount on the portal, overlay, and content; for the CSS route, the normal Radix lifecycle is generally the simpler option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When reviewing a component, trace the state change through the whole tree: identify what changes the dialog from open to closed, then identify which condition actually removes the portal, overlay, and content. It is the latter condition that can cut off the effect. If your component conditionally renders a parent around the entire Radix structure, changing an inner part’s CSS cannot preserve a node whose ancestor has already been removed.

2. Define open and closed animations

Use the state attributes on the overlay and content. This is the illustrative pattern in Radix’s animation guidance; adapt class names, keyframe definitions, and duration to the project:

.DialogOverlay[data-state="open"],
.DialogContent[data-state="open"] {
  animation: fadeIn 300ms ease-out;
}

.DialogOverlay[data-state="closed"],
.DialogContent[data-state="closed"] {
  animation: fadeOut 300ms ease-in;
}

The open rules provide the entrance effect; the closed rules provide the exit effect. Define fadeIn and fadeOut keyframes in your stylesheet, or substitute the project’s existing keyframe names. The 300ms duration above is an example from the documented pattern, not a required value or a recommendation for every interface.

Check the rendered element and selector together. The selector must target the Radix part that carries the state attribute; a class-name typo or a selector aimed at a wrapper instead of the part can leave the closed animation un-applied. Also make sure the closed rule describes an actual CSS animation. A visual transition may change styles, but Radix’s documented unmount suspension is specifically for CSS animations, so do not rely on transition timing to delay removal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Keep the overlay and content coordinated

If the content fades out while the overlay is removed immediately, the result can look like a broken or abrupt close even though the content animation itself works. Give both parts compatible closed-state animations and check the complete sequence together. Their durations and easing do not have to be identical, but the visual effect should make sense as one dialog exit.

Also check whether the content’s exit effect depends on the overlay remaining visible. For example, a panel that slides away while the backdrop fades can use different keyframes, but both parts still need a closed-state animation if both are expected to animate out. The key lifecycle point is unchanged: the parts must remain mounted long enough for their own CSS animations to finish.

Test the overlay and content as separate participants rather than assuming that a working panel effect proves the entire dialog is correct. A backdrop that remains after the panel is gone, or a panel that snaps away while the backdrop fades, usually means one part lacks a matching closed-state rule or is being removed by a different condition. The intended result can use different effects, but both should have an exit path and a lifecycle that lasts through that effect.

Use Motion when its presence system needs to control exit

Motion’s AnimatePresence is designed to retain removed children while their exit animations run. Its documented pattern places a conditional animated child inside an AnimatePresence wrapper and gives the child an exit target. For a dialog, the wrapper itself must remain rendered when visibility changes; if the wrapper and child are removed together, there is no presence boundary left to manage the exit.

Assign one owner for each part

Radix normally manages presence for its dialog parts. If Motion must determine when those parts leave, use Radix’s forceMount support on the portal, overlay, and content that need to remain available, then let Motion’s presence lifecycle manage the animated children. Do not leave a part to Radix’s normal removal timing while expecting Motion to animate it after it has disappeared.

The component structure matters. The presence boundary must be outside the conditional that removes the animated child, and the immediate child tracked by AnimatePresence needs a stable, unique key. The Motion documentation describes this presence pattern; Radix’s Motion integration guidance explains the role of forceMount when an animation library needs control over enter and exit.

Conceptually, the structure should work like this:

  1. Keep the dialog’s root and the relevant portal or presence wrapper in the rendered component tree.
  2. When the dialog closes, change its open state so Radix updates the dialog’s state and behavior.
  3. Keep each part that Motion will animate mounted with Radix’s forceMount option.
  4. Let a stable-keyed Motion child inside a still-mounted AnimatePresence receive an exit target and remain until Motion finishes.
  5. Coordinate overlay and content so each has an exit path and neither disappears before the other’s intended effect.

This is a lifecycle pattern rather than a drop-in component: the exact JSX depends on how the project composes Radix parts and Motion elements. In particular, do not assume that placing an AnimatePresence somewhere inside the dialog automatically gives it ownership of every Radix part. Verify which component is the presence boundary’s direct child and which system is responsible for unmounting it.

Think of forceMount as handing responsibility over, not as a complete animation by itself. It allows the relevant Radix part to stay mounted for the animation system, but Motion still needs a child it can track, an exit target, and a presence boundary that remains in the tree. For a composite dialog, decide whether overlay and content are separate animated children or are coordinated under a shared child, then confirm that the chosen boundary tracks what should actually leave.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep keys stable

Motion needs to distinguish the child that is leaving from a new child that may be entering. Give the immediate child a stable, unique key. If it represents a single dialog, use an identity that stays consistent for that dialog; avoid an unstable list index when the child is part of a changing list. Without a suitable key, the presence system may not recognize the intended child removal and exit.

When diagnosing a missing exit, inspect the direct child of AnimatePresence, not just a deeper Motion element. The boundary tracks its immediate children. If that child has no stable identity, or its key changes unexpectedly during the close, Motion may treat the rendered element as a different child rather than the one that should exit.

Watch nested presence boundaries

An inner AnimatePresence does not automatically guarantee that its exit will run if an ancestor removes it. Motion documents that nested exit animations do not automatically propagate unless configured to do so. If an animated dialog part is nested under another conditional or presence boundary, check the full ancestor chain: the inner boundary cannot manage an exit after it has itself been removed.

This is why moving an animation wrapper deeper into the component is not always a fix. The boundary needs to outlive the child it retains. If a parent condition removes that boundary at the same time as the dialog, correct the parent’s structure or choose a presence owner that remains mounted through the exit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check accessibility and close behavior

An exit effect is visual retention, not a reason for the closed dialog to keep behaving as an open one. Radix Dialog documents modal and non-modal modes, focus management for modal dialogs, title and description support for assistive technology, Escape-to-close behavior, and focus callbacks. Its implementation distinguishes closed content from an open modal for focus trapping and outside pointer-event handling. Verify behavior as well as appearance.

  • Focus: close the dialog with its usual controls and confirm focus returns to the trigger or follows the application’s intended focus behavior.
  • Background interaction: while the exit is visible, check that the page does not remain unintentionally blocked or interactive. The pixels can remain briefly without the dialog retaining its open modal behavior.
  • Keyboard close: test Escape where the dialog supports it, and confirm that the visual exit and resulting focus behavior both occur.
  • Overlay and content: confirm they exit together as intended, rather than leaving a backdrop, panel, or invisible interactive layer behind.
  • Assistive-technology labels: retain the dialog’s title and description support when changing how its children are mounted.

These checks are particularly important when introducing forceMount: the option changes who controls presence, so the animation architecture must not accidentally turn a visual exit into a dialog that still traps focus or intercepts interaction as if it were open.

Run the checks using more than one close path if the dialog has them. A close button, Escape, and any application action that changes the open state should all produce the intended state change. Confirm that focus behavior follows the closed state while the exit remains visible, and that neither the departing content nor an overlay creates an unintended interaction layer during the delay.

Troubleshoot an exit that does not run

The dialog vanishes immediately

Look for a conditional that removes the content, portal, or root at the same moment the open state changes. If application logic removes the animated node before it receives or completes its closed-state animation, neither CSS nor a child-level exit target can rescue it. For Radix CSS animations, preserve the normal dialog presence flow; for Motion, place a still-rendered AnimatePresence around the conditional child and use forceMount where Radix would otherwise remove the part too early.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The CSS entrance works but the exit does not

Check that the closed-state selector matches the actual Radix part and that it defines a CSS animation, not only an open-state animation. Radix’s documented unmount suspension is for CSS animation support; the documentation does not establish equivalent handling for a plain transition. Also verify that no ancestor conditional removes the element before its closed state can be observed.

Motion does not retain the child

Check the three common presence mistakes documented by Motion: the AnimatePresence boundary is itself inside the branch being removed; the immediate child lacks a stable unique key; or a parent removes a nested presence boundary before its exit can propagate. Fix the boundary or key at the level where the actual animated child is tracked.

One part exits and the other snaps away

Treat the overlay and content as separate lifecycle participants. Confirm that each part that needs an exit remains mounted, has an exit animation, and is governed by the intended presence owner. With Motion, do not assume that controlling one part automatically coordinates the other. With CSS, define closed-state animations for both parts you expect to animate.

The animation appears but the dialog still behaves as open

Separate the visible exit from interaction behavior. Check focus trapping, outside pointer events, focus return, and keyboard handling after the state changes. Radix’s dialog implementation documents that closed-but-animating modal content is not treated as open for focus trapping and outside pointer-event handling; custom presence arrangements should preserve the intended behavior rather than keeping a dialog active simply to retain its pixels.

The Radix Dialog API reference for version 1.2.0 documents forceMount on the portal, overlay, and content. Your installed package may differ, so verify the component API and test its behavior instead of assuming that a prop or lifecycle detail is identical across versions. This is especially important when changing which system controls presence in an established dialog.

A short implementation review

Before shipping, trace one complete close from state change to final removal. Confirm that the dialog reaches its closed state, that the intended animation system sees the correct child, and that no ancestor removes the presence boundary first. Then check both overlay and content, not just the element most obvious in the visual effect.

  • For the CSS route, confirm open and closed state selectors exist for every part that should animate and that the closed rules use keyframe animations.
  • For the Motion route, confirm AnimatePresence remains rendered, its direct child has a stable unique key, and the relevant Radix parts are force-mounted for Motion to control.
  • For either route, confirm focus, Escape behavior, background interaction, and the dialog’s title and description support remain correct after closing.

If any of these checks fails, fix ownership or structure before adjusting duration or easing. A longer animation cannot solve an element being removed before its exit starts, and a visually smooth exit is not sufficient if the dialog remains active when it is closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add an exit animation to a React dialog?

Keep the dialog part mounted long enough to receive a closed-state animation. With Radix, the straightforward documented route is to define CSS keyframe animations for both data-state="open" and data-state="closed" and let Radix manage presence. If Motion must control removal, keep AnimatePresence mounted around the conditional child and use Radix forceMount on the relevant parts.

Why does my dialog disappear before the transition finishes?

A conditional such as {open && <Dialog.Content />} removes the node as soon as the state turns false. The element must remain in the DOM for its exit. Also, Radix documents waiting for CSS animations, not equivalent unmount handling for a plain CSS transition.

How do I stop a dialog from unmounting before its exit animation?

Choose a single owner for removal timing. For Radix CSS keyframes, let its normal presence lifecycle observe the closed animation instead of removing the content through an outer conditional. For a JavaScript animation library, keep its presence boundary mounted and use forceMount where Radix would otherwise remove the animated part.

Do I need forceMount for Radix CSS animations?

Usually not for the CSS route. Radix’s documented CSS animation behavior can suspend unmount until the animation finishes. forceMount is useful when a JavaScript animation library needs to take control of mounting and unmounting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Motion’s exit animation not run?

Check that AnimatePresence itself is not inside the conditional branch being removed, that its immediate child has a stable unique key, and that an ancestor is not removing a nested presence boundary before its exit can run. Use forceMount on the relevant Radix parts when Motion needs control of their exit.

Will a closed-but-animating Radix dialog keep trapping focus?

Radix’s implementation distinguishes closed content from an open modal for focus trapping and outside pointer-event handling. Still test focus return, Escape behavior, and background interaction in your own composition, particularly when using forceMount.

The Bottom Line

For a simple Radix dialog exit, use CSS keyframe animations on the open and closed states and let Radix manage presence. If Motion needs to own removal, keep AnimatePresence mounted, give its child a stable key, and use forceMount on the relevant Radix parts. In either case, retain the visual exit without retaining unintended open-dialog behavior.
