Elementor gives you three useful places for custom CSS: an individual widget or container, one page, or the entire site. Use the narrowest scope that solves the problem. Elementor’s in-editor Custom CSS is plan-gated, but Elementor Free users can still add site CSS through WordPress at Appearance → Customize → Additional CSS.

This guide shows the exact paths, explains Elementor’s wrapper-and-class behavior, and gives responsive, hover, and troubleshooting examples that avoid unintentionally changing other parts of your site.

Choose the right CSS scope first

Decide how many elements should receive the rule before writing any CSS. A local rule is easier to control and less likely to create side effects; a global rule is more efficient when the same design treatment is intentional across the site.

Scope Where you enter it What it affects Plan or access note
Element Select a widget or container, then open its Custom CSS controls That widget or container and, when targeted, its descendants Elementor’s in-editor Custom CSS is not available on the Essential plan; it is included on higher plans according to Elementor’s Custom CSS documentation
Page Page Settings → Advanced → Custom CSS The current page Requires the in-editor Custom CSS feature
Site Elementor Editor → hamburger menu → Site Settings → Custom CSS The entire Elementor site Elementor identifies global Custom CSS as an Elementor Pro feature
WordPress Customizer Dashboard → Appearance → Customize → Additional CSS Site-wide CSS, including CSS that targets Elementor markup Available to Elementor Free users through WordPress

Elementor describes these three editor levels—individual widget, specific page, and global site—as separate choices based on the size of the change. The page level takes precedence over site-level CSS when selectors conflict, and element-level CSS takes precedence over both.

What you need before adding CSS

  • Administrator or an editor account that can edit the relevant Elementor template or page.
  • The exact widget, container, page, or site area that should change.
  • A short, distinctive class name if the rule will be reused. Use names such as feature-card or hero-heading, not a generic name such as blue.
  • A backup or staging copy for broad site-wide changes. A malformed declaration can affect every page that loads the stylesheet.

CSS changes presentation only. If the markup or content is wrong, fix the widget settings first. CSS should then handle visual details such as spacing, color, borders, sizing, alignment, and responsive adjustments.

Add custom CSS to one Elementor widget or container

Use element-level CSS when only one button, heading, image, column, container, or other component needs a change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the page in the Elementor Editor.
  2. Click the widget or container on the canvas. If it is difficult to select, open the Structure window and select it there.
  3. Open the widget’s Advanced settings and expand Custom CSS. Elementor’s current help also describes element-level Custom CSS controls under the Style tab for local classes, states, and device sizes; the label can therefore vary with the editor interface and element type.
  4. Enter a rule in the code area. Elementor’s local selector token represents the selected element’s wrapper.
  5. Click Update or Publish, then check the result at the relevant screen sizes.

Elementor documents this element workflow at Add custom CSS to an element.

Basic element-level example

selector {
  border-radius: 12px;
}

The rule rounds the selected widget or container without requiring a reusable class. This is the most contained approach when the treatment is unique.

Target a child inside the selected element

The selected element is usually an outer wrapper. A declaration aimed at that wrapper may not change the visible heading, image, icon, or link inside it. Add the child tag or class when the child owns the property:

selector h2 {
  color: #1769aa;
}

selector img {
  border-radius: 12px;
}

Use a descendant selector when the widget’s visible content is nested. For example, selector h2 reaches a heading inside the selected wrapper, while selector alone styles the wrapper itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hover and other states

Element-level CSS can style interaction states without changing the normal state:

selector {
  background-color: #1f5eff;
  transition: background-color .2s ease, transform .2s ease;
}

selector:hover {
  background-color: #1748c7;
  transform: translateY(-2px);
}

Apply hover rules only where a pointer interaction makes sense. For keyboard users, consider a matching focus rule when the element is interactive:

selector:focus-visible {
  outline: 3px solid #f5b700;
  outline-offset: 3px;
}

Device-specific rules

Keep a base rule outside a media query and override only what changes on smaller screens:

selector {
  padding: 32px;
}

@media (max-width: 600px) {
  selector {
    padding: 18px;
  }
}

Elementor’s documentation demonstrates the same media-query pattern for changing a property such as font color below 600 pixels. Preview the actual breakpoint used by your layout rather than assuming a phone width from a different design system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add CSS to one page

Page-level CSS is appropriate for a landing page, campaign layout, checkout variation, or another page-specific design that should not become a site-wide rule.

  1. Open the page in Elementor.
  2. Open Page Settings. Depending on the editor view, this is available from the page settings control in the editor toolbar.
  3. Choose Advanced, then open Custom CSS.
  4. Enter the rule and save the page.

Keep page rules scoped to a page wrapper, section class, or distinctive component class whenever possible. A broad selector such as h2 { ... } can affect every second-level heading on that page, including headings you did not intend to change.

Page-level example with a section class

.pricing-page .plan-title {
  letter-spacing: .02em;
  text-transform: uppercase;
}

This assumes the page or a containing section has the class pricing-page, and the title widget has the class plan-title. The extra ancestor makes accidental matches less likely.

Add global CSS to the entire Elementor site

Use global CSS only when the rule is deliberately part of the site’s design system: for example, a consistent focus treatment, a shared card style, or a brand-wide spacing convention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Elementor Editor.
  2. Click the hamburger menu in the editor.
  3. Choose Site Settings.
  4. Open Custom CSS.
  5. Enter the rule and save the site.

Elementor identifies this global Custom CSS feature with Elementor Pro. If the Custom CSS panel is missing, confirm the active plan and that you are editing with an account permitted to change site settings. Do not paste a page-specific selector into the global area unless you intentionally want that selector available across the site.

Global example

.site-card {
  border: 1px solid #d9dee8;
  border-radius: 14px;
  box-shadow: 0 8px 24px rgba(20, 31, 56, .08);
}

Assign site-card only to components that should share this treatment. A class-based global rule is safer than redefining every element of a native HTML type.

Use Elementor Free with WordPress Additional CSS

Elementor Free does not include the Custom CSS panel inside the editor. You can still add CSS through WordPress’s built-in Customizer.

  1. Save or update the Elementor page.
  2. From the WordPress Dashboard, go to Appearance → Customize.
  3. Open Additional CSS.
  4. Paste the rule into the editor.
  5. Click Publish, then view the page in a private or refreshed browser window.

This stylesheet is site-wide, so scope the rule with a class, page body class, or another reliable ancestor. Do not include Elementor’s local selector token in Additional CSS; that token is interpreted inside Elementor’s element-level editor. Replace it with a real selector.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free-user equivalent of the element example

.feature-card {
  border-radius: 12px;
}

.feature-card h2 {
  color: #1769aa;
}

Assign feature-card to the relevant widget or container, then add the CSS in Additional CSS. The same rule can be reused on multiple elements, which is useful when the page builder’s editor-level control is unavailable.

Assign classes correctly

Classes are the most maintainable way to reuse a rule and to target a specific Elementor component from Additional CSS or a global stylesheet.

  1. Select the widget or container.
  2. Open Advanced.
  3. Find CSS Classes.
  4. Enter the class name without a leading period, for example change-color.
  5. Write the period in the stylesheet selector: .change-color.

Elementor places that class on the widget’s outer HTML wrapper. Therefore, this rule styles the wrapper:

.change-color {
  color: green;
}

If the visible text is inside an h2, the heading may have its own color declaration and remain unchanged. Target the descendant:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
.change-color h2 {
  color: green;
}

The same principle applies to images, links, buttons, icons, and other nested nodes:

.change-color img {
  filter: grayscale(100%);
}

.change-color a {
  text-decoration-thickness: 2px;
}

Do not type .change-color in the CSS Classes field. The period belongs in CSS, not in Elementor’s class-name input.

Understand Elementor’s selector and wrapper behavior

Elementor’s developer documentation describes a wrapper-scoped selector mechanism that converts control values into CSS styles. In the element editor, selector is a convenient way to refer to the current element without inventing a class:

selector {
  margin-block-end: 24px;
}

selector .icon {
  width: 20px;
  height: 20px;
}

Use a class instead when the rule should be shared, moved to Additional CSS, or applied to several widgets. Use selector when the change is local to the element currently open in the editor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control overrides and specificity

When two rules set the same property, the practical order documented for Elementor is:

  1. Element-level CSS overrides page-level and site-level CSS.
  2. Page-level CSS overrides site-level CSS.
  3. Within the same scope, a more specific selector can beat a less specific selector.
  4. If specificity is equal, the declaration that appears later generally wins.

For example, a site rule may define a shared heading color:

.site-heading {
  color: #222;
}

A page rule can intentionally change it on one page:

.landing-page .site-heading {
  color: #b3261e;
}

An element-level rule on the heading can override both when the selected element’s local CSS sets the same property. Prefer a better-scoped selector over !important. Reserve !important for a deliberate exception after checking the actual winning declaration in browser developer tools.

Troubleshoot CSS that appears not to work

1. Confirm that the code is in the intended scope

Check whether you entered the rule in an element, page, site, or WordPress Customizer panel. A page rule cannot be edited from the site settings panel, and the selector token will not work in Additional CSS.

2. Check the class name and punctuation

The Elementor field should contain change-color; the stylesheet should contain .change-color. A typo, an extra space, or a missing period prevents a match.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

3. Inspect the outer wrapper

Use the browser’s developer tools to verify where Elementor placed the class. If it is on a wrapper but the property belongs to a nested node, add the descendant tag or class, such as .change-color h2 or .change-color img.

4. Look for a stronger declaration

In the browser’s Styles panel, find the declaration that is crossed out. That identifies the rule losing the cascade. Compare scope, selector specificity, source order, and whether an Elementor control generated an inline or highly specific declaration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Test the correct state and breakpoint

A rule under :hover will not appear in the normal state, and a media query with max-width: 600px will not apply on a wider viewport. Test keyboard focus separately from pointer hover and resize the preview to the breakpoint used in the rule.

6. Check whether the edited page is the page being viewed

Templates, headers, footers, popups, and theme areas can supply the visible element. If a widget is generated by a template, edit that template or scope the rule to the template’s class rather than changing an unrelated page.

7. Refresh the published stylesheet

Save or publish the change, reload the page, and test in a private window if the old result persists. A cached browser or optimization layer can continue serving an earlier stylesheet; purge the relevant cache according to the caching system used by the site.

Practical patterns you can adapt

Style one button without changing every button

Add primary-cta to the button widget’s CSS Classes field:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
.primary-cta .elementor-button {
  border-radius: 999px;
  padding-inline: 28px;
}

.primary-cta .elementor-button:hover {
  transform: translateY(-1px);
}

The descendant selector limits the declarations to the button markup inside that widget wrapper.

Keep an image inside a card from overflowing

.feature-card {
  overflow: hidden;
  border-radius: 16px;
}

.feature-card img {
  display: block;
  width: 100%;
}

The wrapper controls clipping and the child image receives the sizing rule.

Change a heading only on small screens

.mobile-heading {
  font-size: 42px;
}

@media (max-width: 600px) {
  .mobile-heading {
    font-size: 30px;
    line-height: 1.15;
  }
}

Assign mobile-heading to the heading widget. Keep the desktop declaration outside the media query so the component has a predictable base style.

A maintainable CSS workflow

  • Start with element-level CSS for a one-off adjustment.
  • Promote a rule to a class when two or more components need the same treatment.
  • Keep page-specific classes under page-level CSS instead of placing them in global CSS.
  • Use a naming convention that describes purpose, such as testimonial-card, checkout-note, or hero-title.
  • Group related declarations and add a brief comment when a rule depends on a particular Elementor structure.
  • Test desktop, tablet, mobile, hover, and keyboard focus states whenever the rule affects layout or interaction.
  • Inspect the rendered wrapper before increasing specificity or adding !important.

Which method should you use?

Your situation Best method Reason
One widget needs a unique border or spacing adjustment Element-level Custom CSS Smallest blast radius and direct access to selector
A landing page needs a different visual treatment Page Settings → Advanced → Custom CSS Keeps the change on that page while allowing several component rules
A design token or component style is shared across the site Site Settings → Custom CSS One source for intentionally global Elementor styles
You use Elementor Free WordPress Additional CSS with classes Provides site-wide CSS without the in-editor Custom CSS panel
The rule should be reusable in several places A named class plus the appropriate stylesheet scope Separates the reusable selector from a single widget instance

The reliable sequence is: choose the narrowest scope, identify whether the class sits on a wrapper, target the visible descendant when necessary, and then check which rule wins in the cascade. That approach works whether the CSS is entered in Elementor’s editor or in WordPress Additional CSS.
