To color a 7 Days to Die server-browser description, edit the ServerDescription property in serverconfig.xml (or the matching setting in your hosting panel). Put a six-digit hexadecimal color in square brackets immediately before the text, then use [-] when that colored section should end.
For example, this makes “Welcome” red while leaving the rest in the default color:

What controls the text shown in the server browser?
The listing text comes from the ServerDescription property in the server configuration. The XML element normally looks like this:

<property name="ServerDescription" value="Your description here"/>The property name is part of the server’s configuration format. You should change only the text inside the quoted value attribute unless you already understand the rest of the file. Do not remove the element, rename it, or place the description outside the quotation marks.
When the server starts, the game reads that value and uses it for the description visible to people browsing available servers. A color code is formatting text inside the value; it is not a separate XML property.

Colors use a six-digit hexadecimal value enclosed in square brackets:
[RRGGBB]The six characters represent red, green and blue components. The commonly demonstrated red value is FF0000, so the opening code is [FF0000]. Place the code directly before the characters you want colored.
End the colored run with [-]. This restores the server browser’s default text color for everything that follows.
<property name="ServerDescription" value="[FF0000]Welcome[-] to my server"/>In that example, only “Welcome” receives the red formatting. The phrase “to my server” follows the reset code and uses the default color.

You can apply the same pattern to separate parts of one description:

There is no published official table in the available references that limits you to a named set of colors, and there is no authoritative color-count figure to rely on. Test colors for contrast in the actual server browser instead of assuming that every value will look equally readable on every interface.
Prepare before changing the configuration
A configuration edit is small, but a malformed XML line can prevent the server from loading the setting correctly. Use this short preparation checklist:
- Know whether you manage a local or dedicated-server file yourself or use a hosting control panel.
- Stop the server before editing. This prevents a running process from overwriting your change when it shuts down or saves settings.
- Keep a backup copy of the original configuration, or at least copy the original
ServerDescriptionline somewhere safe. - Use a plain-text editor. A word processor can add formatting characters that do not belong in XML.
- Decide which words should be colored and where the color should return to normal.
Do not assume that a color edit requires changing another server setting. The formatting belongs in the description value itself.

Method 1: Edit serverconfig.xml on a self-managed server
- Stop the server. Use your normal service command, launcher, or server-management method and wait until the process has completely stopped.
- Open the configuration file. Locate
serverconfig.xmlin the directory used by your dedicated server and open it in a plain-text editor. - Find the property. Search for
ServerDescription. The line begins with<property name="ServerDescription". - Edit only the value. Keep the property name, quotation marks, opening tag and closing
/>intact. Replace the existing description text betweenvalue="and the final quote. - Insert the opening color code. Put a six-digit hexadecimal value in brackets immediately before the words to color, such as
[FF0000]Welcome. - Close the colored section. Add
[-]after the colored words if later text should use the default color. - Save the file. Confirm that the editor did not add a second extension such as
.txtor change the file into a rich-text document. - Start the server again. The new value is read when the server loads its configuration.
- Check the listing. Open the server browser and inspect the description. If the old text remains, allow for the listing to refresh and verify that the server actually restarted with the edited file.
Minimal red welcome message

<property name="ServerDescription" value="[00FF00]Co-op server[-] | [FFFF00]New players welcome[-] | [FF0000]Read rules first[-]"/>Each new opening code applies to the text that follows it, and each [-] ends that run. Keeping a reset code between segments makes the intended boundaries explicit and prevents a later phrase from inheriting an earlier color.
Method 2: Change the setting in a hosting control panel
Many managed hosts expose the same XML property through a form rather than requiring direct file access. The control-panel sequence documented in a guide updated July 6, 2026 is:

- Stop the server from the hosting panel.
- Open Config, then choose Game Settings.
- Navigate to the entry beginning
<property name="ServerDescription". - Edit the quoted text next to
value=. For example, enter[FF0000]Welcome[-] to my server. - Save the configuration.
- Start the server.
- Inspect the server-browser listing after the restart.
The panel may display the setting as a text box instead of showing the complete XML line. In that case, enter only the description value; do not paste a second <property> element into a field that already represents the value. If the panel presents the full line, preserve its surrounding XML and edit the quoted value just as you would in the file.
Can the description contain line breaks?
A community example for version 2.0 reported that the sequence nn produced blank lines in the server-browser description. The example was:

That behavior comes from a community post, not a complete formatting specification, so treat it as an observation rather than a guarantee for every game version, server build or browser interface.
If you use line breaks, keep the backslash and the letter n exactly as shown inside the value. Do not insert literal paragraph markup or HTML. Start with a short test description so you can confirm how your current server and browser render the escape sequence before rewriting a long rules block.
Unicode symbols were also reported as inconsistent in that community example. Characters that display correctly in one client may be missing or rendered differently in another, so plain text is the dependable choice when a rule or contact detail must be readable by everyone.
Why HTML color tags do not work
Do not wrap the description in HTML such as:
<font color="red">Welcome</font>In the cited Fun Pimps forum discussion, an HTML attempt caused the description to appear blank. The moderator directed the user to the square-bracket color syntax instead. The server-browser description is not an HTML document; adding tags can make those tags invalid content or interfere with how the setting is parsed.

Use [RRGGBB] and [-], not HTML elements, CSS names, or a web-style color attribute.
Self-managed file versus hosting panel
Both methods change the same ServerDescription value. The practical difference is how you reach it and how you restart the server.

Neither method changes the color syntax. The same bracket code belongs in the description value.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The description is blank
- Remove any HTML tags such as
<font>and restore bracket color syntax. - Check that the opening and closing quotation marks around
valueare present. - Confirm that the property still ends with
/>. - Restore the backed-up original line, restart the server, and then reapply only the color code if the blank result disappears.
The color does not appear
- Confirm that the color has six hexadecimal characters, for example
[FF0000], with no missing bracket. - Make sure the code is inside the quoted
value, immediately before the intended text. - Verify that you edited the configuration used by the running server rather than a template or a different instance.
- Stop and start the server after saving, then refresh the browser listing.
Everything after one word has the same color
Add [-] where the colored run should end. Without the reset marker, subsequent text can remain part of the same colored span.
The old description still appears
- Check that the server was actually stopped before the edit and restarted afterward.
- Reopen the file or panel setting and verify that the saved value contains the new text.
- Refresh the server browser and allow its listing to update.
- If multiple server instances exist, confirm that the listing you are viewing belongs to the instance whose configuration you changed.
The line-break example displays the characters literally
The nn behavior is a community observation tied to a version 2.0 example, not an unconditional promise. If your server shows the backslashes and letters instead of creating spacing, remove the escape sequences and use a shorter single-line description. Do not replace them with HTML paragraph tags.
The file will not save or the server will not load
- Revert to the backup line and confirm that the XML remains well formed.
- Look for an accidental unescaped quotation mark inside the value.
- Ensure that the description remains on the intended property and that no neighboring XML was deleted.
- Save as plain text using the original filename and extension.
Choosing colors for readability
The formatting feature does not make every color a good choice. Very bright values, dark values on a dark interface, or combinations with little contrast can make a rule harder to read. Use color to signal a small number of categories—such as a welcome heading, a rules warning or a server mode—and keep the actual instructions in ordinary text.
- Preview the complete phrase, not just the six-digit code.
- Check the result in the server browser where players will read it.
- Keep critical rules understandable even if color is unavailable or rendered differently.
- Use a reset code between differently colored sections.
- Avoid relying on symbols or unusual Unicode characters for essential information.
No complete official palette or description-length limit is established in the available references. That means you should not promise a particular number of supported colors or a maximum character count. If a long description is truncated or wraps unexpectedly, shorten it and prioritize the server name, play style and most important rule.
Safe editing checklist
- Server stopped: the process is not running while the file or panel setting is changed.
- Correct property: you edited
ServerDescription, not a similarly named setting. - Valid color code: the opening marker is a six-digit value such as
[FF0000]. - Reset included:
[-]appears after each colored segment that should end. - XML preserved: quotation marks, property name and closing tag remain intact.
- No HTML: the value contains bracket syntax rather than
<font>or other markup. - Saved correctly: the original filename and plain-text format are preserved.
- Restart completed: the server was started after saving.
- Listing checked: the final appearance was verified in the server browser.
What the supported evidence does—and does not—establish
The documented, repeatable part is the ServerDescription setting and the bracket color format: a six-digit hexadecimal value in square brackets starts a colored run, and [-] ends it. The restart-and-check workflow is necessary because the server reads the configuration when it starts.
Line breaks using nn, automatic centering and Unicode behavior come from a community version 2.0 example rather than a complete official formatting reference. Test those features on your own server before depending on them in rules or announcements. The available references also do not publish a definitive palette or character limit, so avoid presenting either as a fixed specification.
