To add a clickable link to a YouTube video description, edit the video in YouTube Studio, paste the complete URL into the Description field, and save the change. For the URL to work as a clickable link, the video must be a long-form video and your channel must have YouTube’s advanced features enabled.
Links in YouTube Shorts descriptions are not clickable. YouTube has made that distinction deliberately to reduce spam and scam attempts, so changing the URL’s formatting will not create a workaround.
How to add a clickable link to an existing YouTube video
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Content from the left-hand menu.
- Click the video’s title or thumbnail.
- Paste the full URL into the Description field. For example:
https://www.example.com/product - Click Save.
YouTube’s description field allows up to 5,000 characters. The URL should be a normal, complete web address, including https:// where appropriate. You do not need to write HTML or Markdown around it.

Pasting a web address into the description is only the editing step. Clickability depends on two additional conditions:

| Condition | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Video type | The link must be in a long-form video description. URLs in Shorts descriptions are non-clickable. |
| Channel access | Your channel must have the advanced feature called Add clickable links to your long-form video description and posts. |
| Destination | The linked page must comply with YouTube’s external-links and Community Guidelines policies. |
In other words, a URL can look exactly like a web address and still fail to become clickable if it is in a Short or your channel does not have the required feature access.
Check whether clickable links are enabled
You can check advanced-feature access from YouTube Studio on a computer:
- Open YouTube Studio.
- Click Settings.
- Select Channel.
- Open Feature eligibility.
- Look under Advanced features.
- Confirm that the status shows Enabled.
The Feature eligibility page identifies clickable links in long-form video descriptions and posts as an Advanced feature. YouTube may provide advanced access based on sufficient channel history, valid-ID verification, or video verification.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Access is not necessarily permanent. YouTube says creators must continue following its Community Guidelines and maintain a positive channel history. Active Community Guidelines violations can restrict advanced features, including the ability to use clickable description links.
Do you need to be monetized?
No. YouTube lists monetization and clickable links as separate feature categories. The current feature requirements do not say that a channel must be in the YouTube Partner Program before it can add clickable links to long-form descriptions.
You can upload videos without automatically having advanced-feature access, however. If the URL remains plain text after you save the description, check Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility rather than assuming monetization is the problem.

How to format a description link
YouTube’s documented method is simply to place the URL directly in the description. You can put it on its own line with a useful label:
Get the full guide here:https://www.example.com/full-guide
You can also place a short explanation before the address:
Download the free checklist:https://www.example.com/checklist
There is no documented requirement to use an HTML anchor such as <a href="...">, and YouTube does not document Markdown link syntax for this purpose. Use the actual URL in the Description field instead.
YouTube documents text-formatting controls such as bold, italic, and strikethrough, but those controls do not replace the URL. Formatting the words around an address does not make a Shorts description link clickable.
Why your YouTube description link may not be clickable
1. The video is a Short
This is the most important limitation. URLs in Shorts descriptions are classified as non-clickable. Adding https://, removing it, shortening the address, or writing the address as “example dot com” does not change that rule.

2. Advanced features are not enabled
Open YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility and inspect the Advanced section. If clickable links are not enabled, follow the verification or channel-history options YouTube presents there.
3. You edited the wrong link location
A link in the channel profile is not the same as a URL in a video description. The paths are different:
| Link location | Studio path |
|---|---|
| Video description | Content → video title or thumbnail → Description → Save |
| Channel profile | Customization → Profile → Links → Add link → PUBLISH |
Changing a profile link will not add a link to an individual video’s description, and editing a video description will not change the links shown on your channel profile.

4. The change was not saved
After pasting the URL, click Save. If you leave the page before saving, the description may retain its previous version. Also check for invalid characters or other text-entry problems if YouTube does not accept the description.
5. YouTube removed or blocked the destination
YouTube may remove a link if it cannot verify that the destination is safe. A link that leads to prohibited or deceptive content can also cause the video metadata—or, depending on the violation, the video itself—to be removed.
External-link rules you should check before publishing
A clickable URL must not send viewers to content that violates YouTube’s policies. The external-links policy applies broadly: it covers clickable URLs, URLs shown as ordinary text, obfuscated addresses such as “dot com,” and verbal instructions directing viewers to a prohibited site.

Examples of prohibited or dangerous destinations include:
- Phishing pages or sites designed to steal login details
- Malware, unwanted software, or deceptive downloads
- Pornography or child sexual abuse imagery
- Unauthorized access to paid content
- Terrorist fundraising or recruitment
- Certain regulated goods
- Deceptive sites that create serious risks for viewers
- Other content prohibited by YouTube’s Community Guidelines
Depending on the circumstances, a policy violation can lead to a warning, strike, feature restriction, content removal, or channel termination. Three Community Guidelines strikes within 90 days may result in channel termination.
How to add several useful links
For a long-form video, put the most important destination near the top of the description so viewers do not have to expand a large block of text. A simple structure works well:
Download the resources mentioned in this video:https://www.example.com/resourcesRead the complete tutorial:https://www.example.com/tutorialSubscribe for more videos.
Keep the labels specific. “Download the resources” tells viewers what will happen; “Click here” does not. Before publishing, open each destination in a browser and confirm that it works, uses the intended domain, and does not redirect to an unexpected page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How many channel profile links can you add?
Channel profile links are a separate option when you want a small set of destinations to be available across your channel. YouTube allows up to 14 channel profile links. The first link is displayed prominently near the Subscribe button; viewers can access the remaining links by choosing to see more links.
Add them through YouTube Studio → Customization → Profile → Links → Add link → PUBLISH. Use a video description link when the destination is specific to one video, and use a profile link when it should be available across the channel.

YouTube’s current feature table lists clickable links as an Advanced feature and lists monetization separately. It does not state that joining the YouTube Partner Program is required.
Do I need HTML or Markdown to create the link?
No. Paste the complete URL directly into the video’s Description field in YouTube Studio, then save. YouTube does not document an HTML-anchor or Markdown command for description links.

The Bottom Line
For a long-form video, go to YouTube Studio → Content → select the video → Description, paste the URL, and click Save.
