The best way to add breadcrumbs depends on your theme. A block-theme site can place WordPress’s native Breadcrumbs block in a post, page, template, or template part without code. A site using Yoast SEO can enable breadcrumbs in Yoast SEO → Settings → Advanced → Breadcrumbs, then place them with a block, shortcode, or PHP. Whichever method you choose, check the visible trail separately from BreadcrumbList structured data: a breadcrumb bar on the page does not by itself prove that Google can read valid markup.
Choose the right breadcrumb method first
Breadcrumbs are a linked path—usually from the home page through a section or taxonomy to the current page—that helps visitors understand where they are. On WordPress, there are two supported implementation paths covered here:
- WordPress core Breadcrumbs block: the most direct no-plugin route for sites using block themes and the Site Editor.
- Yoast SEO breadcrumbs: useful when Yoast is already installed, especially on classic themes that need shortcode or PHP placement.
Do not select a method only because it is familiar. Confirm which editor your theme uses, where the trail must appear, whether archives and error pages are included, how much coding you can maintain, and how you will verify structured data.
| Decision point | WordPress core Breadcrumbs block | Yoast SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Insert the block or add it in the Site Editor. | Enable breadcrumbs in settings, then use a block, shortcode, or PHP. |
| Best fit | Block themes and editor-led sites. | Sites already using Yoast, including classic themes. |
| Site-wide placement | Assign the block to a template or template part. | Use a supported theme integration or place the call in theme templates. |
| Coding | None for normal block insertion. | None with the block or shortcode; PHP is needed for many classic-theme placements. |
| Archive coverage | Core documents category, tag, author, date, search, 404, and eligible custom-post-type archives. | Coverage depends on the integration and the theme templates where output is placed. |
| Schema work | Validate the site’s resulting structured data separately. | Yoast documents JSON-LD output using BreadcrumbList and ListItem objects. |
| Maintenance | Keep the edited templates assigned to the page types you intend to cover. | Review direct theme edits after updates because an update can overwrite them. |
How to add breadcrumbs with the WordPress Breadcrumbs block
Use this route when your site has a block theme and the Site Editor. The block can be placed on one item or assigned to a template so that every page using that template receives the trail.
#1 Best Overall
Add breadcrumbs to one post or page
- Open the post or page in the WordPress editor.
- Select the + block inserter and search for Breadcrumbs. You can also place the cursor in the editor and type
/breadcrumbs. - Insert the Breadcrumbs block where visitors should see it, normally above the page title or near the top of the content layout.
- Publish or update the content, then open the public URL in a logged-out browser to check the rendered trail.
This placement affects only the item you edited. It is appropriate when a landing page needs a trail but you do not want to alter the site-wide template.
Place breadcrumbs across a site with the Site Editor
- Open Appearance → Editor to enter the Site Editor.
- Open Templates and choose the template that actually renders the content type you want to cover. You can also open Patterns and edit a template part used in several templates.
- Insert the Breadcrumbs block in the desired location, such as the header-area template part immediately above the content title.
- Save the template or template part.
- Check that the block is assigned to every relevant template. A breadcrumb added to a single post template will not automatically appear on a search-results or 404 template.
Template assignment is the main source of surprises with a block-theme implementation. A site can appear to have breadcrumbs on posts while silently omitting pages, archives, search results, or 404 responses because those views use different templates.

Configure the trail’s appearance
The block settings let you show or hide the home item and the current-page item, choose a separator, and style colors, typography, dimensions, and borders. Keep the visual hierarchy understandable: separators should be easy to distinguish, links should look interactive, and the current location should not be mistaken for another link if you have chosen to display it as plain text.
After styling, inspect a long post title, a nested page, and a narrow mobile viewport. Breadcrumbs should wrap or contract without pushing the main heading off-screen. If the trail is missing on a particular view, return to the Site Editor and identify the template used by that URL rather than inserting duplicate blocks into individual content items.
Views the core block can cover
WordPress documents breadcrumb support for category, tag, author, and date archives; search results; 404 pages; and custom post types whose archive can appear in the trail. That documented capability does not remove the need to test your own templates. Confirm each view with a representative URL, because a custom template can omit the block even when the site supports that type of breadcrumb.
How to add breadcrumbs with Yoast SEO
Yoast provides a dashboard setting and several placement methods. This is often the practical choice for a classic theme or for a site that already relies on Yoast’s SEO output.

Enable the breadcrumb feature
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Yoast SEO → Settings → Advanced → Breadcrumbs.
- Turn on the breadcrumb feature.
- Configure the available appearance options and save the settings.
The setting is available directly when the theme supports Yoast breadcrumbs. If your theme does not declare support, use the Yoast Breadcrumbs block, the shortcode, or a documented theme integration instead of assuming that enabling the setting will place visible output automatically.
Insert the Yoast Breadcrumbs block
- Open the post, page, or template in the editor.
- Use the block inserter and search for Yoast Breadcrumbs.
- Insert the block at the required location and save.
This approach avoids PHP and is suitable when your editor exposes the block. For a site-wide result, place it in a template or template part that is used by all the page types you intend to cover.
Use the shortcode
Yoast supports the shortcode Home » Blog » . In the block editor, place it inside a Shortcode block. In the classic editor, insert the shortcode where the trail should appear, then preview the public page to make sure WordPress renders the breadcrumb instead of displaying the shortcode text.
Place breadcrumbs in a classic theme with PHP
For a classic theme, Yoast documents this function call:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →if ( function_exists( 'yoast_breadcrumb' ) ) {
yoast_breadcrumb( '<p id="breadcrumbs">','</p>' );
}
- Back up the site and the theme files before editing.
- Open the template that renders the content type, commonly
single.phpfor posts orpage.phpfor pages. - Place the call where the breadcrumb should appear, often just above the page title. The correct location varies by theme markup.
- Save the change, clear any page cache, and test a public post and page.
Direct edits to a theme file can be overwritten by a future theme update. Prefer a permanent, theme-supported integration where one is available, and keep a record of the file and location you changed. If a redesign changes the template structure, recheck the function call rather than assuming the old location still exists.
Declare theme support when appropriate
A theme can declare support with:
add_theme_support( 'yoast-seo-breadcrumbs' );
Yoast says this enables breadcrumb rendering and a Customizer component for themes that support it. The declaration belongs in the theme’s setup code and should be maintained as part of the theme rather than pasted into an unrelated content field.
Visible breadcrumbs and Google structured data are separate checks
A breadcrumb trail that visitors can see and the structured data that search engines parse are related, but they are not the same deliverable. You need both a useful visible hierarchy and valid, accessible markup if you want Google to consider breadcrumb information.
What Google requires before it can use breadcrumb markup
Google Search Central describes BreadcrumbList structured data as a way to help Google categorize page information in search results. The page must be accessible to Google: it cannot be blocked by robots.txt, marked noindex, or restricted behind a login. Google can process more than one breadcrumb trail when a page has multiple valid navigation paths.

Even valid markup may not produce a breadcrumb rich result for every query or page, so do not remove a visible trail merely because a search preview does not show one.
What a BreadcrumbList contains
Yoast states that its breadcrumb output uses JSON-LD in the page source with BreadcrumbList and ListItem objects. Yoast’s developer documentation identifies the key schema concepts as an @type of BreadcrumbList, an @id, and an itemListElement array representing the hierarchy.
The important quality check is agreement. The names and order in the JSON-LD should describe the same path visitors see. A stale category, an incorrect position value, or a URL that does not resolve to the linked crumb can make the machine-readable trail disagree with the page.
Validate after publishing
- Open the published URL while logged out and confirm the visible breadcrumb links, labels, order, and destinations.
- View the rendered page source or use your structured-data testing workflow to locate the
BreadcrumbListJSON-LD. - Check that the page is crawlable and that the markup contains the expected hierarchy,
@id, anditemListElementdata. - Repeat the check on a post, a page, a category or tag archive, a search result, and a 404 page when those views are part of your design.
Do not treat the presence of a block or shortcode as proof that the structured data is valid. Conversely, do not treat valid JSON-LD as a substitute for a visible navigation aid.

Troubleshoot common breadcrumb problems
The Breadcrumbs block does not appear in the inserter
First determine whether the site is running a block theme and whether you are editing a context where the block is available. If you are using a classic theme, use the Yoast block, shortcode, or PHP integration instead. Also check that the editor has loaded the current WordPress components rather than an outdated cached screen.
Breadcrumbs show on posts but not pages or archives
Different URLs can use different templates. In a block theme, inspect the template assigned to each missing view and add the block there or in a shared template part. In a classic theme, identify the PHP template responsible for that view; placing the function only in single.php will not cover a page template or a custom archive template.
The shortcode prints as text
Make sure the exact shortcode is Home » Blog » and that it is inside a Shortcode block or the classic editor’s shortcode-aware content area. If it still prints literally, verify that Yoast is active and that the breadcrumb feature is enabled.
The PHP call causes an error or displays nothing
Use the function_exists guard shown in Yoast’s example so the template does not call an unavailable function. Confirm that the code is in a PHP template, not in a visual text block, and that Yoast is active. A blank result can also mean the call is in a template that does not render the URL you are testing.
Two breadcrumb trails appear
Duplicate output usually means the trail was added in more than one layer—for example, a template part and an individual post, or a theme’s built-in integration and a PHP call. View the page source and inspect the layout to identify each insertion, then keep one intentional placement for that template.
The hierarchy or labels are wrong
Check the page’s parent relationship, assigned taxonomy, archive settings, and custom-post-type configuration. For a block-theme site, verify that you are viewing the intended template. For Yoast, review the breadcrumb settings and the integration that supplies the output. Test a page with a long or nested path to expose ordering problems.
Best Value
Structured-data tests report a mismatch
Compare the JSON-LD trail with the visible links one item at a time. Correct the template or integration that generates the wrong label or URL, then retest the rendered source. A valid-looking visual trail cannot compensate for inaccessible pages, a noindex directive, or a hierarchy that the markup does not represent.
Breadcrumbs disappear after a theme update
Recheck any file edited directly in the theme. Updates can replace those files, so restore the function through a supported integration or reapply the change using the theme’s maintained customization path. After restoring it, test every template type again instead of checking only the home page.
Pre-launch checklist
- The chosen method matches the site’s theme and editor.
- The trail appears in the intended location without pushing the title or content out of alignment.
- Home, intermediate sections, and the current location use clear labels and working links.
- The block or PHP call is present on every template type you intend to cover.
- Posts, pages, archives, search results, custom-post-type archives, and 404 pages have been checked where applicable.
- There is only one visible breadcrumb trail per page.
- The public page is accessible to crawlers and is not blocked by robots.txt, noindex, or a login wall when you expect Google to process it.
- The rendered source contains the expected BreadcrumbList structure when your implementation provides it.
- The visible trail and JSON-LD hierarchy agree.
- A theme-update or template-change procedure exists for maintaining the placement.
Which approach should you use?
Use the core block when you have a block theme
Choose the native block when you want editor-managed placement, no PHP, and a straightforward Site Editor workflow. It is especially convenient when you want to reuse a template part and cover the archive and error templates that you deliberately assign.
Use Yoast when it already powers your SEO setup
Choose Yoast when the plugin is already active, when you need its documented JSON-LD output, or when a classic theme makes a shortcode or PHP integration more practical than converting templates. The block and shortcode avoid coding; PHP gives the most precise classic-theme placement but requires maintenance.
Use a deliberate validation process either way
Neither method eliminates template testing. Confirm where the trail renders, inspect representative page types, and verify structured data independently. That combination gives visitors a reliable navigation path and gives search engines a correctly described hierarchy without assuming that either outcome is automatic.
