Godlike.Host offers hosted CS 1.6 servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Use YaPB, an open-source bot for Counter-Strike 1.6, and install it either as a standalone game DLL or as a Metamod plugin. On Windows, its installer detects your Half-Life installation and writes the required loader entry. On Linux, you extract the package into cstrike and edit one loader file. After a map loads, run yapb add from the server or client console to add a bot.
What you need before installing
YaPB fills Counter-Strike servers with computer-controlled players and supports both listen servers and HLDS dedicated servers. This guide uses the Counter-Strike 1.6 game directory, normally named cstrike. Condition Zero uses a different directory, czero; do not apply the Linux paths below to a Condition Zero installation.

- A working Counter-Strike 1.6 installation with a server that can start and load a map.
- Permission to write files inside the Half-Life installation directory.
- The current YaPB package for your operating system from the project’s official release location.
- A compatible 32-bit HLDS environment. YaPB documents that only a 32-bit binary is available because Valve dropped support for 64-bit HLDS.
Decide how YaPB will be loaded before copying files. The choice matters when your server already uses Metamod extensions.
Standalone or Metamod: which loading method is right?

The YaPB installation guide recommends the Metamod method when mods such as AMX Mod X are installed. That keeps bot loading in the same chain as the rest of your server extensions. If no Metamod installation exists, standalone loading is the shorter documented route.

Install YaPB on a Windows server
Windows installations can be performed on either a listen server or a dedicated server. The installer needs the directory that contains the Half-Life executable, not merely a shortcut or a parent folder.
- Download the current YaPB Windows installer from the official project release location.
- Run the installer.
- When it asks for the destination, click Browse and select the folder containing
hl.exeorhlds.exe. Select the actual Half-Life directory in which thecstrikefolder resides. - Click Install.
The installer chooses the loader configuration based on what it finds. If Metamod is detected, it adds YaPB to addons/metamod/plugins.ini. If Metamod is not detected, it patches liblist.gam so the game loads yapb.dll as its game DLL.
Stop the server before installing or changing the loader file. After installation, start HLDS, load a map, and proceed to the verification steps below. If the server was running while files were changed, restart it so the DLL is loaded from a clean process.
Install YaPB on a Linux HLDS server

/usr/Steam/steamapps/common/Half-Life/cstrikeUse the exact path for your own Steam installation if it differs. Extract the YaPB TAR.XZ package into the cstrike directory so the resulting addons/yapb tree is inside the game directory.
Linux standalone installation
- Stop HLDS.
- Extract the YaPB TAR.XZ package into
/usr/Steam/steamapps/common/Half-Life/cstrike. - Open
cstrike/liblist.gam. - Find the existing Linux game-DLL line:
gamedll_linux "dlls/cs.so" - Replace its value with:
gamedll_linux "addons/yapb/bin/yapb.so" - Save the file and restart HLDS.
Keep the setting as one active gamedll_linux line. Leaving the original line active as well can make it unclear which library the server is loading.

- Stop HLDS.
- Extract the YaPB TAR.XZ package into the
cstrikedirectory. - Open
cstrike/addons/metamod/plugins.ini. - Append this Linux plugin entry on its own line:
linux addons/yapb/bin/yapb.so - Save the file and restart HLDS.
Use this method when Metamod is already responsible for loading AMX Mod X or other server plugins. Verify that the path is relative to the cstrike directory; adding an absolute filesystem path or omitting addons/yapb/bin/ prevents Metamod from finding the library.
Start the server and add your first bot
YaPB commands become useful after the server has loaded a map and a player slot is available. Open the dedicated-server console, or use the client console if your setup permits client-issued server commands, then run:

yapb addYaPB’s usage commands allow you to set a bot nickname, difficulty, personality, team, and team class. The exact arguments and ordering are defined by the YaPB version’s usage guide, so use the command’s documented syntax rather than guessing flags from a different release. The project also provides a fill command for adding a selected number of bots with chosen settings.

If yapb add reports that no slot is available, remove a bot or increase the server’s configured player capacity before trying again. A successful command should create a player entry and show no YaPB library-load error in the server console.
Make sure the map has waypoint data
YaPB bots navigate using map waypoint or graph data. Official maps commonly have the data they need, but a custom map may not. A bot can appear in the scoreboard yet fail to move, choose sensible routes, or leave its spawn if the map has no usable graph.

- Test the installation first on a map known to have YaPB waypoint data.
- If bots work on that map but not on a custom map, treat the map’s graph as the likely cause rather than reinstalling the DLL.
- Obtain compatible waypoint data for the exact map version, or create the map’s waypoints using YaPB’s waypointing tools and documentation.
- Reload the map after adding or changing graph data so the server reads the new files.
Waypoint coverage is separate from the server’s plugin configuration: a correctly loaded bot library still needs navigation data to play a map reliably.

Verify the installation systematically
Check the installation in this order so a missing file, wrong loader, and map-data problem are not confused with one another.
- Check the directory. YaPB’s files should be under the server’s
cstrikedirectory, including theaddons/yapbpath created by the package. - Check the loader. Standalone Linux installations must point
liblist.gamtoaddons/yapb/bin/yapb.so. Metamod installations must containlinux addons/yapb/bin/yapb.soinaddons/metamod/plugins.ini. On Windows, confirm the installer either added the Metamod entry or patchedliblist.gamforyapb.dll. - Check the architecture. The server must run in the documented 32-bit HLDS environment; a 64-bit-only setup cannot load YaPB’s available binary.
- Load a map. Bot commands are meaningful after the game has initialized a map.
- Run the command. Enter
yapb addwith an open slot. - Read the console. Confirm that a bot joins and that no library-load error, missing-file message, or architecture error appears.
- Test navigation. Observe the bot on a map with known waypoint or graph data before diagnosing custom-map behavior.
Troubleshoot common failures
The server starts, but yapb add is unknown
YaPB was not loaded into the running game process. Stop the server and recheck whether you edited the correct game directory. On Windows, the installer must target the folder containing hl.exe or hlds.exe. On Linux, verify the active loader: a standalone installation belongs in liblist.gam, while a Metamod installation belongs in addons/metamod/plugins.ini. Restart HLDS after correcting the file.
The console reports that a library cannot be loaded
First check the path and filename exactly. Linux requires addons/yapb/bin/yapb.so; Windows standalone loading uses yapb.dll. Then confirm that the files are under cstrike, not one directory above it. A 64-bit HLDS process is another likely cause because YaPB documents only a 32-bit binary. Install or launch a compatible 32-bit server build before testing again.

Metamod loads, but YaPB does not
Open cstrike/addons/metamod/plugins.ini and confirm the YaPB line is present, uses the Linux prefix on Linux, and is not commented out or misspelled. If the server uses AMX Mod X or other Metamod plugins, keep YaPB in this same plugin list rather than also patching liblist.gam; loading it through both paths can create conflicts.

This usually indicates missing or incompatible waypoint/graph data for the current map. Compare behavior on a map known to include YaPB graph data. If only the custom map fails, install or create graph data for that map and reload it.
No bot appears after the command
Check the available player slots first. yapb add cannot add a player when the server is full. Use yapb removebots to free slots, or adjust the server’s player-capacity setting, then issue the add command again. Also ensure the map has finished loading and that the console did not show a loader error earlier in the startup sequence.
Choosing a maintainable setup
For a clean HLDS installation with no plugin framework, standalone loading has fewer moving parts: one game-DLL setting on Linux, or the installer’s liblist.gam patch on Windows. For a server that already depends on Metamod, use the Metamod route so YaPB is managed with the rest of the extensions. That makes it easier to see all loaded plugins in one place and avoids replacing the game DLL independently of your existing stack.
Whichever route you choose, document the loader file, the YaPB package version, and the maps for which waypoint data has been installed. When you move the server to another machine, those three details explain most differences between a working and a non-working installation.
Operational checklist
- YaPB is installed inside the active Counter-Strike 1.6
cstrikedirectory. - The server is running a compatible 32-bit HLDS environment.
- Exactly one loading method is configured: standalone through
liblist.gamor Metamod throughplugins.ini. - The server has been restarted after installation or configuration changes.
- A map is loaded and has usable YaPB waypoint or graph data.
- At least one player slot is free.

Once these checks pass, you can use YaPB’s documented options for names, difficulty, personality, team, team class, and fill counts to tailor the server without changing the underlying installation.
