To add an app to Android Auto, install a version that explicitly supports Android Auto from Google Play, open it once on your phone, then choose which supported apps appear in Android Auto’s launcher. On your phone, open Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto > Customize launcher. From there, hide or show supported apps and drag them into your preferred order. Exit and restart Android Auto before checking the car display.
Installing an ordinary phone app does not automatically make it available in Android Auto. The app needs an Android Auto interface, and your phone, account, Android version, data connection and vehicle must meet Google’s current compatibility requirements.
What “adding an app” means in Android Auto
Android Auto is integrated into compatible Android phones, so you do not normally download a separate Android Auto application for the car screen. The app you want to use must itself support Android Auto. Google maintains a list of compatible categories and apps in its Android Auto-compatible apps guide.

Compatible apps can provide a driving-optimized interface for media, messaging, news and other supported functions. A regular Android app may work perfectly on the phone but still be absent from the car launcher because its developer has not supplied an Android Auto experience, the app is unavailable in your region, or the listing is not available to your Google Account.

Google notes that you must be signed in to a Google Account and have personalization enabled to see the full set of compatible apps in Google Play. Availability can also change when an app, Android, Android Auto or Google Play listing is updated.
The launcher is therefore a filter and an organizer, not an app installer. Installing an app puts it on the phone; Android Auto only exposes the portion of the installed catalog that has a supported car interface and is available to that account and device. Customize launcher then controls visibility and order within that supported set.
Check compatibility before installing anything
Android Auto projection depends on more than the app. Confirm the connection method you plan to use and the vehicle or stereo’s support before troubleshooting the launcher.
| Connection | Phone requirements | Vehicle and connection requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Wired Android Auto | Google’s current getting-started page specifies Android 11.0 or later and an active mobile-data plan. Android Go edition devices are not supported. | A compatible vehicle or stereo and a high-quality USB data cable. Google recommends a cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet), with no hub or extension. |
| Wireless Android Auto | A compatible phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. Google’s current page describes wireless projection as compatible with phones running Android 11.0. | A vehicle or stereo that supports wireless Android Auto. Confirm compatibility with the vehicle manufacturer. |
Google’s requirements can vary by device, Android release, region and help-page locale. Check the live Android Auto getting-started requirements and your vehicle maker’s compatibility list if your phone or car was released near a minimum-version change.
Wired and wireless are separate compatibility paths. A phone that works over USB is not automatically guaranteed to project wirelessly, and a vehicle that supports wireless projection still needs a phone meeting the wireless requirements. Android Auto is unavailable on Android Go edition devices, so changing launcher settings cannot overcome that platform limitation.
How to add an app to Android Auto
1. Find an Android Auto-compatible app
- Open Google Play on the Android phone you will connect to the car.
- Use Google’s compatible-apps page to browse supported apps, or search Google Play for the service you need and verify that its listing supports Android Auto.
- Make sure you are signed in to the Google Account used on the phone and that personalization is enabled if compatible listings appear incomplete.
Do not assume that an app belongs in the launcher merely because it is installed. Compatibility is an app-level requirement; Android Auto does not expose every application on the phone.
If several versions of a service appear in Google Play, check that you are installing the current listing for the intended account. Google’s compatible-app page is a useful starting point, but individual listings can change or disappear, and availability can be limited by country or account.
2. Install and open the app on the phone
- Install or update the compatible app from Google Play.
- Open it on the phone while the phone is still disconnected from the car.
- Complete any initial setup, account sign-in or permission prompts.
- For media services, sign in before starting Android Auto. Some services may require their own subscription or premium account; that requirement belongs to the service, not to Android Auto generally. Google’s media-listening guidance covers this sign-in step.
Opening the app once helps finish its setup and confirms that the installed package is the one associated with your account. It does not bypass Android Auto compatibility checks.
If the app asks for a subscription, trial or premium tier, handle that on the phone before connecting. Android Auto does not turn a free phone installation into a paid service, nor does it provide a universal subscription; any billing, account limits or premium features come from the individual app.

3. Open Android Auto’s launcher controls
- On the phone, open Settings.
- Choose Connected devices.
- Open Connection preferences.
- Tap Android Auto.
- Select Customize launcher.
Manufacturers sometimes rename or rearrange Settings categories. If you cannot find the path, use the Settings search field and search for Android Auto, then open the result that leads to its phone settings.
These controls are on the phone, not normally in the vehicle’s touchscreen menus. If you are already connected, it is still usually easier to make the change on the phone, then restart the projection session so the car reloads the list.

The Customize launcher screen lists apps and launcher options that Android Auto can use. Select the checkbox or visibility control for a supported app if it is hidden. To change its position, press and hold the app name or its drag handle, then move it up or down. Google’s developer documentation describes this screen as the place where users can hide launcher items and drag app names to reorder them: App launcher | Design for Driving.
Your phone may show fewer controls than the developer documentation illustrates, because the exact screen depends on Android and the phone maker’s Settings interface. You can only reorder or hide items that Android Auto exposes; you cannot add an unsupported phone app manually.
Changing the order affects the Android Auto launcher only. It does not rearrange the phone’s home screen, change Google Play’s order, or uninstall an app. Hiding an item likewise leaves the app installed on the phone, so you can restore it later from the same screen.
5. Exit and restart Android Auto
After changing visibility or order, leave Android Auto on the phone and disconnect or close the current projection session. Reconnect the phone, or start Android Auto again, so the car display reloads the launcher configuration. Google specifically advises exiting and restarting Android Auto for launcher changes to appear.
6. Confirm the result on the car screen
- Connect the phone by USB or start a supported wireless projection session.
- On the car display, tap the Android Auto app-launcher button.
- Look for the newly enabled app and verify that the icons appear in your chosen order.
- Open the app and complete any service-specific sign-in that remains.
If the app is absent after a restart, use the troubleshooting branches below rather than repeatedly reinstalling unrelated apps.
Why an installed app is missing from the launcher
The app does not support Android Auto
This is the most common explanation. Check the app’s Google Play information and Google’s compatible-apps page. If no Android Auto support is listed, installing, updating or moving the app in Customize launcher will not make it appear. Compatibility can also be withdrawn or limited by the developer, Google Play region or account.
The app is hidden in Customize launcher
Return to Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto > Customize launcher, enable the app if it is listed, then exit and restart Android Auto. If the labels differ on your phone, search Settings for “Android Auto.”

The app has not completed first-run setup
Open the app on the phone, sign in and dismiss its setup prompts before reconnecting. This is particularly important for media apps, for which Google advises signing in on the phone before starting Android Auto. A service can also require a paid account even though Android Auto itself does not charge a separate app fee.

Unused-app controls disabled it on a Samsung phone
Google’s troubleshooting guidance says Samsung’s unused-app battery controls can temporarily disable an app. Open the app on the phone to re-enable it. If it remains unavailable, look in battery settings for Auto disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep and turn that control off for the app. Samsung’s menu wording varies by One UI and Android version; if you cannot locate the setting, use the phone manufacturer’s support instructions. Google documents this case in Find an app that is not on the app launcher.
Google Play is showing an incomplete compatible-app list
Verify that the phone is signed in to the intended Google Account and that personalization is enabled. Google says those conditions are needed to see all compatible apps. A listing may still be unavailable because of country, account, device, age-rating or developer distribution restrictions.
The projection session is using an old launcher state
Disconnect the phone, close or exit Android Auto, then reconnect and open the launcher again. A change made while a session is active may not render until Android Auto starts a new session.
The app or Android Auto was updated
An update can change compatibility, visibility or the way an app is listed. Recheck Google Play, open the updated app on the phone, and revisit Customize launcher instead of assuming the previous arrangement was preserved. If the app is no longer offered for your account or region, no launcher setting can restore it.
Wired Android Auto connection checks
A cable problem can look like an app problem because the car may start an incomplete or unstable Android Auto session. For wired projection, use a short, high-quality USB data cable matched to the ports on both the phone and vehicle. Google recommends a cable under 1 metre (3 feet), without a hub or extension, and suggests trying the phone manufacturer’s cable. The guidance is in My Android Auto app isn’t working.
- Use a cable that supports data, not a charge-only lead.
- Connect directly to the vehicle’s Android Auto USB port; do not insert a hub or extension.
- Try another suitable cable if the connection drops, repeatedly reconnects or never starts projection.
- Inspect and gently clear debris from the phone and vehicle ports; do not force a connector.
- Update the phone and the compatible app, then restart the phone and the car’s infotainment system before testing again.
When comparing replacement cables, check connector type at both ends, verified data support and a length under 1 metre where practical. USB-IF certification can be an additional quality signal when it is listed, but the essential point for this troubleshooting step is a compatible, reliable data cable. A better cable can stabilize an existing wired connection, but it cannot add an unsupported app, change launcher order or make an incompatible vehicle support Android Auto.
Wireless Android Auto checks
Wireless projection requires more than Bluetooth pairing. The phone must meet Google’s current wireless requirements, including 5 GHz Wi-Fi support and an active data plan, and the car or stereo must support wireless Android Auto. If the vehicle supports only wired projection, a wireless phone setting cannot create wireless support.
- Confirm wireless Android Auto support in the vehicle or stereo documentation.
- Keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled on the phone when beginning the pairing process.
- Use the phone that meets the current Android version and data-plan requirements.
- If wired projection works but wireless does not, treat that as a wireless compatibility or pairing issue rather than an app-launcher issue.
Google’s getting-started page is the appropriate reference when requirements change between Android releases or vehicle models. A wireless adapter is not a universal fix: the phone and vehicle still have to support the wireless projection path.

How to organize the launcher for daily use
Put frequently used apps first
After enabling the apps you actually use, drag the most important ones toward the top of Customize launcher. This changes the order shown in the car’s launcher; it does not rearrange the apps on the phone’s home screen or uninstall anything.
Hide supported apps you do not need
Use the visibility controls in Customize launcher to remove clutter from the car display while leaving the app installed on the phone. If an app disappears after an Android or app update, check this screen again because an update can reset visibility or introduce a new launcher item.
Keep the list limited to compatible interfaces
There is no supported method to force a standard phone interface into Android Auto. Restricting the launcher to apps with Android Auto support avoids confusing entries that cannot open correctly on the vehicle display.
Allow for account and region differences
Two phones with the same Android version can show different compatible apps because Google Play availability, account settings, subscriptions and country restrictions differ. Compare the account and region before treating a missing listing as a software fault.

- Open the app on the phone and confirm that you can sign in and use it normally.
- Check Google Play for an available update and install it.
- Open Settings and search for “Android Auto” if the documented menu path is not present.
- In Customize launcher, verify that the app is enabled and placed where you want it.
- Exit Android Auto completely and disconnect the phone.
- Restart the phone and, where practical, restart the vehicle infotainment system.
- Reconnect using a direct, short data cable for wired testing, or follow the vehicle’s wireless pairing process.
- Open the launcher on the car display and test the app.
If the app remains missing after this sequence, the remaining cause is usually compatibility, account or regional availability, an app-specific restriction, or a vehicle/phone requirement rather than the launcher order itself.
What Android Auto does not change
Android Auto does not mirror every phone app, install software onto the vehicle, or convert an unsupported app into a supported one. The car display receives the Android Auto interface provided by the phone and approved app integrations. That is why a cable, a launcher reorder or a subscription cannot substitute for developer support.
Likewise, Customize launcher is not a general-purpose permission manager. It controls the supported entries Android Auto offers. If an app is absent from that screen altogether, first investigate compatibility, account, region and device restrictions; there is no hidden “add any app” command.
Quick checklist
- The app is listed as supporting Android Auto.
- You are signed in to the intended Google Account and personalization is enabled.
- The app is installed, updated, opened and signed in on the phone.
- The phone meets Google’s current wired or wireless requirements.
- The car or stereo supports the connection type you are using.
- The app is enabled in Customize launcher.
- Android Auto has been exited and restarted after the change.
- A wired connection uses a direct, high-quality data cable shorter than 1 metre when possible.
- Unused-app battery controls have not disabled the app.

How do I change the order of Android Auto icons?
On the phone, open Settings, search for Android Auto if necessary, choose Customize launcher, then press and hold an app name or drag handle to move it. Exit and restart Android Auto before checking the car display.
Can I add an unsupported phone app manually?
No. Android Auto only shows apps with a supported Android Auto interface. Customize launcher can hide, show and reorder exposed items, but it cannot create compatibility for a regular phone-only app.
Does Android Auto itself require a subscription?
Android Auto does not impose a general app subscription. Individual media services may require their own subscription or premium account, and you should sign in on the phone before starting Android Auto.
Why did an app disappear on my Samsung phone?
Samsung’s unused-app battery controls can temporarily disable an app. Open the app to re-enable it, or look for Auto disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep in battery settings and adjust that control.
Is a special cable required?
Only wired connections need a cable. Use a compatible, high-quality USB data cable, preferably under 1 metre (3 feet), connected directly without a hub or extension. A cable cannot make an incompatible app or vehicle work.
Why does wireless Android Auto fail when wired works?
Wireless projection has separate requirements, including a compatible car or stereo, a compatible phone with 5 GHz Wi-Fi support and an active data plan. Wired compatibility does not guarantee wireless compatibility.
Why do two phones show different Android Auto apps?
Google Play listings can differ by Google Account, personalization settings, country, device, age-rating or developer distribution. Check those factors before treating the difference as a launcher error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Bottom Line
Install only an app that supports Android Auto, open and configure it on the phone, then use Customize launcher to show, hide and reorder it. Restart Android Auto before judging the result. If it is still missing, check compatibility, account and region availability, Samsung unused-app controls, and the separate wired or wireless connection requirements.
