A WordPress featured image is assigned to a post, page, or custom post type; your active theme or template decides where it appears and how it is cropped. To set one, open the item in the editor, use the Featured image control in the settings sidebar, and select or upload an image.
How do I add a featured image in WordPress?

Open the post or page in the WordPress editor. If the settings sidebar is closed, click the gear icon to open it.

In the sidebar, find Featured image and choose the option to select an image.

Choose an existing image from the Media Library or upload a new one, then confirm the selection.

Save or update the post or page. To change the image later, return to the same sidebar section and replace or remove it.
WordPress documentation describes featured images, also called post thumbnails, as images used in different ways depending on the theme. The image is associated with the content; the theme controls its presentation. WordPress: Page/Post Settings sidebar
Why can’t I see the Featured Image option?
The editor control depends on theme support and the post type. Its absence does not necessarily mean an image upload failed.

Classic themes
A classic theme must enable post thumbnails before the editor can offer the feature. Developers typically add add_theme_support( 'post-thumbnails' ) in the theme setup, before the init action; a common place is the theme’s functions.php file or an after_setup_theme callback. Support can also be limited to particular post types, so check whether the affected post type is included. Block themes and custom post types
Block themes enable post thumbnails automatically. A custom post type may still need thumbnail support enabled when the post type is registered. If you are not responsible for theme or post-type code, ask the site administrator or theme developer to check the relevant support rather than editing theme files blindly. Where does WordPress display the assigned image?
Setting a featured image does not, by itself, guarantee that visitors will see it in a particular place. The active theme or template determines whether it appears above a post, on an archive card, in a header, or elsewhere.

Classic theme templates
Theme developers can use the_post_thumbnail() to output a post’s featured image, or get_the_post_thumbnail() to retrieve its markup for use in a template. Block themes and Query Loops
In block templates, the Post Featured Image block displays the assigned image. It is commonly placed inside a Query Loop to show the image for each post in a list. Using it in site templates depends on the available Site Editor support. WordPress: Post Featured Image block

WordPress can create several image sizes, but the size used for a featured image is not necessarily the same as the general thumbnail setting. The theme can register a separate post-thumbnail size and specify its dimensions or crop behavior. The template then determines which size it requests.

Choose an image for the theme’s layout

Check the theme’s documented image dimensions or aspect ratio; WordPress does not establish one universal featured-image ratio.

Preview the image in the location where the theme uses it. A crop that looks acceptable above a post may cut off the subject on an archive card.

Check crop positioning and whether important details remain visible within the cropped area.

Use a source image with enough resolution for its display size. Enlarging a small image can make it appear soft.
When previously uploaded images need attention
If a developer changes or registers a theme image size, WordPress does not automatically recreate every earlier upload in that new size. Thumbnail regeneration may be needed for existing images. This is a maintenance step for a changed image-size setup, not a routine requirement every time an editor assigns a featured image. WordPress: add_image_size()
