To add a widget to a Samsung Galaxy Home screen, touch and hold an empty area, tap Widgets, choose a widget and any available style or size, then tap Add. You can drag supported widgets to new positions, resize them with the on-screen handle, combine compatible widgets into a stack, or remove them without uninstalling the underlying app.
What a Galaxy widget does
A widget is an at-a-glance panel that shows information or exposes an app function without requiring you to open the app first. Depending on the app and phone, examples can include weather, SmartThings routines, email, Camera controls, Samsung Notes, Spotify, or YouTube. These are examples rather than a guarantee that every Galaxy model, software version, or app provides the same widget.
Widgets occupy space on a Home screen panel. Their availability, appearance, settings, resize behavior, and supported locations depend on the app, your Galaxy model, One UI version, and sometimes your region.

How do I add a widget to my Galaxy phone?
- Go to the Home screen panel where you want the widget.
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen. Do not press an existing app icon or widget.
- Tap Widgets.
- Browse the suggested widgets or scroll through the list. You can select an app to see the widgets it makes available.
- Choose the widget, then select a displayed variant or size if the picker offers one.
- Tap Add. If the widget opens a setup screen, complete the requested choices, such as an account, location, calendar, playlist, or SmartThings routine.
- When the widget appears, touch and hold it and drag it to the exact open area you want, then release.
The picker may show several versions of one widget. A weather app, for example, might offer a compact temperature panel and a larger forecast panel. Select the version that fits the space you have; you can change its position or, where supported, its size later.

How to move and arrange Home screen widgets
Touch and hold the widget until it lifts from the grid, drag it to an open position, and release. If you drag it to the edge of the display, continue holding it while the phone moves to the next Home screen panel, then place it there. This lets you group related information, such as placing a calendar beside a to-do widget, without opening the apps.
On newer One UI releases, including Samsung’s One UI 7 guidance, the same long-press and drag gesture is used to move widgets between positions or panels. The menu appearance and exact animation can differ by device and software version.
Before moving a large widget, make sure the destination has enough consecutive grid space. If the widget will not drop, move another icon or widget first, or place the widget on a different panel with more room.

Only widgets designed for resizing display a resize outline, dots, or a corner handle. To resize one, touch and hold it, then use the control that appears:
- On interfaces showing resize dots or an outline, drag the available edge or dot until the widget reaches the required width or height.
- On One UI 7-style interfaces that show a corner control, touch and hold the corner and drag it to change the dimensions.
Release the control when the widget fits. If no handle or outline appears, that widget does not support resizing on that phone or in that version of the app. The available sizes can also be limited by the Home screen grid, so a widget may enlarge in one direction but not another.

How to remove a widget without deleting its app
- Touch and hold the widget.
- Tap Remove.
Removing it takes the panel off the Home screen; it does not uninstall the app or delete the app’s settings. You can add the widget again later through Widgets. If the widget contains personal configuration, such as a selected account or playlist, the app may ask you to choose those options again when you add it.
How to create and manage a widget stack
A widget stack combines multiple compatible widgets in one Home screen space. This is useful when you want several panels available without dedicating a large area to each one.
- Touch and hold an existing widget.
- Choose Create stack.
- Select another widget and its available variant.
- Tap Add to place it in the stack.
- Swipe left or right across the stack to switch between the widgets it contains.
To change the contents later, touch and hold the stack and choose Edit stack. Use that screen to add or remove items. The exact stack controls can vary by One UI release. Samsung’s US support guidance states that automatic rotation is unavailable on One UI 6.1.1 or higher, so do not expect a stack to change widgets automatically unless your specific software provides that control.

A widget that appears on the Home screen is not automatically available on the Lock Screen or Always On Display. Each location has its own supported widget list.
Adding Lock Screen widgets
For a Galaxy phone running One UI 7 or later, use this sequence:

- Wake the phone and press and hold an empty area of the Lock Screen.
- Tap Add Widgets.
- Select one or two available widgets.
- Tap Done.
Samsung’s One UI 8 instructions for the Galaxy S25 describe rearranging Lock Screen widgets by pressing and dragging them left or right. Other models may show different editing controls. If the option is absent, check the phone’s software version and model-specific Lock Screen editor rather than assuming the feature is broken.
Adding widgets to Always On Display
Always On Display support is more restricted than Home screen support. Samsung’s Australian guidance covers Australian-variant devices on One UI 6.1 or later and requires Always On Display to be enabled in Settings for widgets to show there. The names and location of the controls can differ in other regions and on other models.
Open the phone’s Lock Screen and Always On Display customization area, look for the widget controls supplied for your device, and add or remove only the listed options. If Always On Display is disabled, enable it first and then revisit the customization screen.
Optional third-party Lock Screen customization
Samsung’s UK widget guidance points to Good Lock and its LockStar module as an optional route for third-party Lock Screen customization. This is not a universal feature: Galaxy Store availability, model compatibility, country, and One UI version can all affect whether it appears. If you use this route, check that Good Lock and LockStar are available for your exact phone before relying on them.
What to do when you cannot add, move, or delete a widget
Turn off the locked Home screen layout
A locked Home screen layout prevents changes to widget and icon positions. Touch and hold an empty Home screen area to open Home screen settings, find Lock Home screen layout, and turn it off. Return to the Home screen and retry the add, move, resize, or remove action. Samsung support pages note that the wording and path can vary by software version and region.

The Widgets button or a widget is missing
- Swipe through every Home screen panel first. The widget may have been moved to another panel rather than deleted.
- Open the Widgets picker and search the app’s section. A widget can disappear if the app or device no longer supports it.
- Check for updates for both the Galaxy phone and the underlying app, then restart the phone.
- Open the underlying app directly. If the app itself fails, fix its sign-in, permission, network, or account problem before troubleshooting the widget.
- If the app opens normally but its widget is still missing or unusable, Samsung advises contacting the app developer because widget behavior is supplied by the app.
The widget will not move or drop into place
Confirm that the Home screen layout is unlocked and that the destination has enough grid space. Move an icon or another widget out of the way, then drag the widget again. For a move between panels, keep holding the widget at the screen edge until the next panel appears before releasing it.
The widget cannot be resized
Look for a resize outline, dots, or corner handle after a long press. If none appears, resizing is not supported for that widget on your device or in that app version. Choose a different variant from the Widgets picker instead of forcing the gesture.
The widget is blank, stale, or does not respond
Open the app to confirm that its data loads, then check the app’s account, permissions, and connection. Install available app and system updates and restart the phone. A widget can also be limited by the app’s own battery, background-data, privacy, or location settings. If the app works while the widget remains faulty, contact the app developer; Samsung cannot change an app’s widget implementation.

Samsung publishes the same basic Home screen workflow across its support materials, but labels and available features are not identical everywhere. One UI 7 guidance describes long-pressing and dragging a widget corner to resize. One UI 7 or later adds the documented Lock Screen widget editor, while One UI 8 guidance for the Galaxy S25 adds a specific left-right drag method for rearranging those widgets. Widget stacks are supported on compatible software, but automatic rotation is unavailable on One UI 6.1.1 or higher according to Samsung’s US support article.

A practical way to organize a Galaxy Home screen
Keep frequent information on the first panel
Place the widgets you check several times a day on the first Home screen panel, leaving enough empty grid space for their largest useful size. Weather, calendar, reminders, or music controls are common examples, but the right choice depends on the apps you actually use.
Use additional panels for occasional tasks
Move less frequently used widgets to another panel rather than shrinking every widget until its text is difficult to read. Drag the widget to the display edge, wait for the next panel, and release it in an open area.
Use stacks when the information is related
Combine widgets that you consult in the same context, such as calendar and tasks, so they share one footprint. Keep unrelated or highly interactive widgets separate if swiping through a stack would slow you down.

Leave space for touch targets
A widget that technically fits can still be awkward if icons or other widgets are pressed accidentally. After arranging the panel, test each widget’s buttons and swipe areas in normal use and move neighboring items if the controls are hard to hit.
