Most free desktop media players can load an external subtitle file without changing the video. For a quick menu-driven setup, use VLC: open the video with the external-subtitle option and select the file. mpv accepts a file with --sub-file and can auto-load a precisely matching filename, while MPC-HC can load SRT, ASS, or SSA files automatically when they share the video’s folder and base name. If subtitles are early or late, apply a fixed delay; if the error grows throughout playback, correct the subtitle’s frame rate or retime the file. Garbled characters usually require an encoding change, and image-based or permanently burned-in subtitles have limits that text subtitles do not.
Choose the right way to load subtitles
Your best method depends on whether you want a graphical interface, command-line control, or automatic filename matching. The following differences describe documented workflows and controls, not benchmark results.
| Player | Typical loading method | Timing controls | Useful strengths | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VLC | Open the media with the external-subtitle option, or add a subtitle file during playback | Keyboard delay adjustment in 50 ms steps and a numerical synchronization control | Easy menus, subtitle-track selection, text encoding and appearance settings | Burned-in subtitles cannot be disabled; image-based subtitles cannot be styled like text |
| mpv | --sub-file on the command line, or automatic exact filename matching |
--sub-delay=
for a fixed offset and --sub-fps=<rate> for frame-based timing |
Deep control over timing, subtitle paths, and primary or secondary tracks | Command-line workflow is less approachable; image-based subtitles cannot have their styling or position changed |
| MPC-HC | Automatic same-folder, same-base-name loading, or Play → Subtitles → Load Subtitle | Manual subtitle controls are available, but the documented workflow emphasizes loading and track selection | Simple Windows workflow for SRT, ASS, and SSA files | Automatic loading depends on the exact folder and base filename |
Load an external subtitle file in VLC
Method 1: choose the subtitle while opening the video
- Start VLC and choose Media → Open File.
- Select the video you want to play.
- Enable the dialog’s external-subtitle option, then use Browse to select the subtitle file.
- Open the media. VLC should display the selected track when the first subtitle event is reached.
This method is useful when the subtitle file has a different name or is stored in another folder. Common text formats such as SRT, ASS, and SSA can carry timing and, in some cases, styling information; the file must still be a format VLC recognizes.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Method 2: add a file during playback
- Play the video in VLC.
- Open the subtitle menu and choose Add Subtitle File (the wording can vary slightly by desktop build).
- Browse to the subtitle file and confirm the selection.
- If more than one track is now available, use Video → Subtitles Track to choose the one you want.
Adding a file during playback does not permanently alter the video. It associates the subtitle with the current VLC session, so you can try another file without remuxing or re-encoding the video.

Adjust VLC subtitle timing
If every subtitle appears the same amount too early or too late, use VLC’s fixed delay control. During playback, press h or g to adjust subtitle delay; VideoLAN’s official documentation specifies a 50 ms adjustment step. One key moves the subtitles in one direction and the other reverses it, so watch a spoken line and keep the direction that brings the text closer to the dialogue.
For a precise value, open VLC’s track-synchronization controls and enter a subtitle-track synchronization value. A positive or negative value represents a constant offset. This is appropriate when the first subtitle is wrong by two seconds and later subtitles remain wrong by approximately two seconds; it cannot repair a delay that changes over time.
Load subtitles in mpv
Open a specific external file
Launch the video with the subtitle file supplied explicitly:
mpv --sub-file=movie.srt movie.mp4
If either filename contains spaces, quote the complete path using your shell’s normal quoting rules, for example mpv --sub-file="My film.srt" "My film.mp4". The mpv manual describes --sub-file as adding a subtitle file to the list of external subtitles.
Use mpv’s automatic filename matching
mpv’s default exact auto-loading looks for subtitle files associated with the video filename. A practical arrangement is:
movie.mp4movie.srt
Keep both files in the expected folder and change only the extension. A subtitle with a different base name may not be loaded automatically, even if it describes the same film. mpv also has configurable subtitle paths, so a custom configuration can change where it searches; when a file is missing, verify both the configured search path and the name match.

Correct a constant offset in mpv
Use --sub-delay=
with a positive or negative number. For example, mpv --sub-delay=2.5 movie.mp4 applies a 2.5-second fixed offset, while mpv --sub-delay=-1.0 movie.mp4 applies the opposite direction. The sign determines which way the subtitle track moves; test it against a clearly spoken line rather than guessing.
Handle multiple tracks
mpv supports primary and secondary subtitle IDs and runtime cycling. This is useful when a file contains a full translation, a forced-only track, or subtitles for a different language. Cycle through the available tracks while the video is playing, then confirm the selected track’s language and forced status in the on-screen information. Labels are not standardized across releases, so a track named “forced” should still be checked against the actual scenes.
Load subtitles in MPC-HC
Automatic same-name loading
MPC-HC can automatically load SRT, ASS, or SSA when the subtitle is in the same folder as the video and has the same base name. For example:
Episode01.mkvEpisode01.ass
Do not rename only part of the base name or place the subtitle in a neighboring folder. If Windows hides extensions, enable visible file extensions in File Explorer before checking the names; otherwise a file that appears to be Episode01.srt might actually be Episode01.srt.txt.
Load a file manually
- Start playback in MPC-HC.
- Open Play → Subtitles → Load Subtitle.
- Select the SRT, ASS, or SSA file.
- Use the subtitle controls to select the loaded track if more than one is available.
When the subtitle file is not detected
Detection failures are usually a path, filename, extension, or format problem rather than a timing problem. Work through these checks in order:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Confirm that the file exists. Open it in a text editor. A conventional SRT contains numbered entries, time ranges, and caption text. If the file is empty or unreadable, obtain a valid copy before changing player settings.
- Check the extension. Use a format supported by the player. An extension hidden by the operating system can create a second extension, such as
.srt.txt. - Place the files together. Put the subtitle beside the video when relying on automatic loading.
- Match the base name exactly. Change only the extension for the simplest arrangement. Punctuation, spaces, episode numbers, and extra release tags can prevent exact matching.
- Try manual loading. In VLC, use the external-subtitle option or Add Subtitle File; in MPC-HC, use Play → Subtitles → Load Subtitle; in mpv, specify
--sub-file. If manual loading works, the file is probably valid and the automatic search or naming rule is the issue. - Check the player’s search location. mpv’s subtitle paths are configurable. A custom configuration can cause it to search a different folder than the one you expect.
- Look for a track that is already present. The file may have loaded, but another embedded or external track may be selected. Open the player’s subtitle-track list and choose the intended language.
Fix subtitles that are uniformly early or late
A uniform error means the subtitle timing is shifted by a constant amount. Pick a scene with unmistakable speech, pause the video just before the line, and adjust the subtitle until the caption appears at the intended moment. Then check a later scene to confirm that the offset remains approximately the same.

VLC fixed delay
Press h or g during playback to change the delay in 50 ms steps. For a larger or exact correction, use VLC’s numerical track-synchronization control. Keep the value with the correct sign; reversing the sign moves every caption the wrong way.
mpv fixed delay
Apply --sub-delay=
. Use decimals for fractions of a second, such as 0.250 for 250 ms. A fixed delay is session-specific unless you save it in your mpv configuration.
Do not confuse a constant offset with drift
If the first subtitle is correct after an adjustment but captions become increasingly early or late, a larger fixed delay will only make one part of the video better. Move to the drift procedure instead of repeatedly changing the offset.
Fix subtitles that gradually drift out of sync
Progressive drift means the timing error changes as playback continues. A common cause is a frame-based subtitle whose assumed frame rate does not match the video. For example, a subtitle timed for one frame rate can start close to the dialogue and then separate farther from it as the frame count accumulates.
Test the frame-rate explanation in mpv
mpv exposes --sub-fps=<rate>, which changes the speed of frame-based subtitles. If the subtitle was authored for a known frame rate, start mpv with that rate, for example mpv --sub-fps=25 movie.mp4. Compare the beginning, middle, and end of the program. The correct rate should reduce the error across the whole timeline, not merely move one scene into place.
This option is specifically relevant to frame-based subtitles. A time-coded file with incorrect timestamps will not necessarily be repaired by changing the frame-rate setting.

Retiming or resaving the file
When the source and video use different frame rates, or when the subtitle contains malformed timestamps, use a dedicated subtitle editor to retime and resave the file. Set synchronization points near the beginning and end, choose the correct source and target timing basis, and preview several points between them. Save a new copy so the original remains available for comparison.

If the error is nonlinear, individual timestamps may be damaged and require editing rather than one global setting.
Fix garbled subtitle characters
Boxes, accented letters rendered incorrectly, or messages about failed subtitle conversion usually indicate an encoding mismatch. In VLC:
- Open Tools → Preferences.
- Choose Subtitles/OSD.
- Change Default encoding to the encoding used by the subtitle file.
- Save the preference and restart VLC before testing again.
VideoLAN’s official FAQ specifically recommends changing Default encoding from this page when characters are wrong or subtitle conversion fails. If you do not know the original encoding, try the likely encoding used by the subtitle’s language, then verify names, punctuation, and accented characters throughout the file. Avoid repeatedly saving an already damaged file in different encodings; keep an untouched copy and convert a duplicate with a subtitle editor when necessary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose the correct language or remove duplicate subtitles
A video can contain embedded subtitle tracks in addition to an external file. Multiple tracks may represent different languages, a full translation, commentary, or a forced-only track used for signs and dialogue in another language.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- In VLC, open Video → Subtitles Track and select the intended entry.
- In mpv, cycle through the available tracks or choose the primary and secondary subtitle IDs.
- In MPC-HC, select the desired subtitle track after loading it through the subtitle menu.
“Forced” and language labels depend on how a release was authored. Treat the label as a clue, then watch a scene that should contain translated signs or foreign dialogue to verify that the selected track behaves as expected. If two caption sets appear simultaneously, disable one track before changing timing or styling; otherwise you may be correcting the wrong file.

Fix subtitle appearance, placement, and styling
Text subtitles
Text subtitles are rendered by the player, so VLC can expose controls for font, size, color, alignment, and encoding. Use those settings when captions are too small, poorly contrasted, or positioned over important image content. ASS and SSA files can also carry styling instructions, but the final appearance still depends on the player’s renderer and settings.
Image-based subtitles
VobSub, DVD, Blu-ray/PGS, and DVB subtitles are image-based rather than ordinary editable text. mpv’s manual notes that image-based subtitles cannot have their styling and position changed for fundamental reasons: the player is displaying prepared pixels, not laying out characters. You may be able to choose a track or adjust a general display setting, but you cannot treat these captions like an SRT and change individual letters, fonts, or line breaks.
Permanently burned-in subtitles
Burned-in subtitles are part of the video image itself. VLC’s FAQ states that they cannot be disabled. Selecting another subtitle track or changing subtitle preferences affects external or embedded tracks, not text already encoded into every video frame.

Use a reliable subtitle-file workflow
A small amount of organization prevents most loading and synchronization problems:
- Keep the original video and subtitle together while testing.
- Use the same base name and change only the extension when automatic loading is desired.
- Make a backup before converting encoding or retiming.
- Check the first, middle, and final sections after any timing change.
- Record whether the problem is a constant offset, progressive drift, wrong language, or unreadable characters; each symptom requires a different fix.
- When a file works in one player but not another, try manual loading in the second player before editing the file. The difference may be search-path or renderer behavior rather than damaged timestamps.
Quick diagnosis table
| Symptom | Likely cause | First action | If that fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| No subtitles appear | Wrong path, name, extension, or unselected track | Put the files together, match the base name, and load the file manually | Verify the format and the player’s configured subtitle search path |
| Every line is early or late by about the same amount | Constant offset | Use VLC’s 50 ms keyboard adjustment or mpv’s --sub-delay |
Enter an exact numerical synchronization value |
| Sync starts correctly and worsens | Frame-rate mismatch or damaged timestamps | Test mpv’s --sub-fps for a frame-based file |
Retiming or resave the subtitle in an editor |
| Accents or symbols are wrong | Encoding mismatch | Change VLC’s Default encoding under Tools → Preferences → Subtitles/OSD | Convert a duplicate with a subtitle editor after identifying the source encoding |
| Two caption sets overlap | Multiple embedded or external tracks selected | Choose one language or track in the player’s subtitle menu | Check whether one track is forced-only or commentary |
| Font or position cannot be changed | Image-based or burned-in subtitles | Determine whether the captions are text, image-based, or part of the video | Use a text track when available; burned-in captions cannot be disabled |
When a subtitle editor is the better solution
Player controls are ideal for a temporary constant offset, but editing is preferable when you need a corrected file for repeated playback or sharing. Use an editor when timestamps drift, the file has malformed entries, the source and target frame rates differ, or the encoding must be converted permanently. Preserve the original, save the corrected version under a new filename, and verify synchronization at multiple points before replacing the working copy.
For one-off viewing, VLC’s delay controls or mpv’s command-line options are faster. For a subtitle that will be used across devices or players, a properly retimed and correctly encoded file avoids repeating the same workaround.
