To add a category in WordPress, go to Posts > Categories, enter a unique name, optionally set a slug, parent, and description, then click Add New Category. You can also create one from the Categories panel while editing a post. To delete a category, use Posts > Categories and click Delete; the category’s posts are not deleted. WordPress moves those posts to the site’s Default Post Category, so check that setting first under Settings > Writing.
What WordPress categories do
Categories group related blog posts into broad subjects, helping readers browse and helping you maintain a predictable site structure. A post can belong to more than one category, but WordPress requires every post to have at least one category assignment.
Categories can be arranged hierarchically. A top-level category can have child categories beneath it, such as Technology with WordPress and Web Hosting as children. Use a hierarchy when the parent is a meaningful broad topic and the child is a narrower branch, not simply to create extra navigation levels.
Each category has a name, a URL-friendly slug, an optional parent, and an optional description. Category names and slugs must be unique on the site. The name is what visitors usually see; the slug is used in URLs and should be short, readable, and stable.

Before you add or remove a category
- Decide whether the topic is broad enough to be a category. A category normally describes a recurring subject, not a one-off phrase.
- Check Posts > Categories for an existing category with the same meaning. Names and slugs cannot duplicate existing categories.
- If you plan to delete a category, identify the replacement category first and confirm the default setting under Settings > Writing.
- Remember that deleting a category does not delete posts, but it changes the category assignment of affected posts.
How to add a category from the WordPress dashboard
The dashboard method is the best choice when you are managing your site’s overall category structure. It exposes all category fields in one form and lets you create a parent-child relationship before assigning the category to a post.
- Sign in to the WordPress dashboard.
- Open Posts > Categories.
- In the Add New Category form, enter the category’s name.
- Optionally enter a Slug. Use lowercase words separated by hyphens, such as
web-design. If you leave it blank, WordPress generates one from the name. - Use the Parent Category menu if this should be a child category. Leave it at the top-level option for a standalone category.
- Enter an optional description. Depending on the theme, this text may appear on the category archive or be used as administrative context.
- Click Add New Category.
The new category appears in the category list and can be selected when you create or edit posts. If WordPress reports a duplicate, change the name or slug so it is unique.

Use a name that readers understand without additional explanation. Keep the slug aligned with that name unless you have a specific reason to preserve an established URL. Changing a slug later can alter the category URL, so avoid casual changes after the category is in use.
Creating a child category
To create a child, add the category normally, then select its parent in Parent Category before saving. For example, choose WordPress as the parent for a new Plugins category. The child remains a separate category and can be assigned to posts on its own.
How to add a category while writing a post
When a category is needed only while preparing a particular post, you can create it without leaving the editor.

- Open a new or existing post in the WordPress editor.
- In the settings sidebar, open the Categories panel.
- Check an existing category if it already describes the post.
- Click Add New Category when the required category does not exist.
- Type the new category name.
- Choose an optional parent category.
- Click the panel’s add button, then select the new category for the post if it is not selected automatically.
- Save or publish the post.
This quick flow is convenient for a one-off editorial decision. It provides the category name and parent choices, while the dashboard form is the better place to review slugs and descriptions or reorganize the complete taxonomy.

How to edit or rename a category
Editing changes the category record rather than creating a second category. Use it to correct a name, improve a slug, move a category within the hierarchy, or update its description.
- Go to Posts > Categories.
- Move the pointer over the category you want to change.
- Choose Quick Edit for an inline change, or choose Edit for the full form.
- In Quick Edit, change the name or slug, then save the inline form.
- In the full Edit Category form, change the name, slug, parent, or description as needed.
- Save the update.
Renaming a category changes its displayed label but does not remove posts assigned to it. Changing the slug can change the category archive URL, so treat a slug that is already in use as a URL change rather than a cosmetic edit.
Set the default post category before deleting anything
WordPress needs a fallback category for posts that have no other category and for posts affected by category deletion. To choose it, go to Settings > Writing, find Default Post Category, select the desired category, and save the settings.
The current default category cannot be deleted. If you need to remove it, first select a different default category under Settings > Writing, save, and then return to Posts > Categories. You can rename the old default instead if the category is still useful.

How to delete one category without deleting posts
Deleting a category removes only the category term. WordPress keeps the posts and assigns posts that were assigned to the deleted category to the site’s default post category.
- Open Posts > Categories.
- Confirm that the category you intend to remove is not the current Default Post Category. If it is, change the default under Settings > Writing first.
- Move the pointer over the category.
- Click Delete.
- Confirm the deletion if WordPress asks for confirmation.
Before deleting, inspect the category’s posts if the category carries an important editorial distinction. You may want to assign those posts to a more appropriate existing category first rather than rely on the fallback category.
How to delete several categories at once
Bulk deletion is useful when cleaning up a taxonomy, but it should be used only after checking which categories are defaults, parents, or heavily used.
- Go to Posts > Categories.
- Select the checkbox beside each category to remove.
- Open the Bulk Actions menu.
- Choose Delete.
- Click Apply.
Every selected category is removed, and posts assigned to those categories are handled according to the site’s default post category. A child category’s parent relationship disappears when the child is deleted; the posts themselves remain.

- The posts remain published, scheduled, or drafted; deleting the category does not delete the posts.
- Posts assigned to the deleted category are assigned to the default post category.
- If a post also had another category, that other assignment remains. The default-category fallback is relevant to the deleted assignment and to any post that otherwise has no category.
- The deleted category no longer appears as an option in the editor or on category-management screens.
Because category deletion changes classification rather than content, review archive navigation, menus, widgets, and any internal links that pointed specifically to the deleted category. The exact appearance of category archives depends on the active theme, but the category term itself is no longer available.

How to assign categories to existing posts
Open an individual post in the editor and use the Categories panel to check the categories that apply. To remove an assignment from that post, clear the category checkbox, while ensuring another category remains selected because WordPress requires at least one category.
The Posts screen supports bulk editing for adding categories to selected posts. However, the WordPress Posts documentation states that bulk editing cannot change or delete category assignments for selected posts. If you need to remove a category from particular posts, edit those posts individually rather than assuming the bulk editor will remove the assignment.

Use parents for genuine subject groups
A parent should describe a broad area that naturally contains its children. For example, a parent about WordPress can contain children for themes and plugins when those are recurring sections of the site. Avoid making every category a child simply because the interface allows nesting.
Do not treat categories as keywords
Categories are for primary editorial groupings. A post can have multiple categories, but assigning every possible subject creates noisy archives and makes the structure harder to maintain. Use a consistent rule, such as one primary category plus an additional category only when it represents a genuinely separate audience or subject.
Keep names and slugs stable
Use a clear name and a readable slug when the category is created. If a correction is necessary, edit the existing category rather than creating a near-duplicate and moving posts manually.

Troubleshooting common category problems
The category will not save
Check whether another category already uses the same name or slug. Adjust the duplicate value, then submit the form again. Also verify that you are using the category form under Posts > Categories rather than a similarly named taxonomy supplied by a plugin.
The category cannot be deleted
The most common reason is that it is the site’s default post category. Go to Settings > Writing, choose another default, save, and retry the deletion. If you want to keep the category’s meaning but change its wording, use Quick Edit or Edit instead of deleting it.

Posts appear under an unexpected category
Check the default category in Settings > Writing. Posts formerly assigned to a deleted category are moved there. If the result is not appropriate, edit the affected posts and select the intended categories individually.
The new category is not visible in the editor
Save the category first, refresh the editor if necessary, and open the Categories panel again. Confirm that you created a post category under Posts > Categories, not a different taxonomy. A child category may also be nested beneath its parent in the list.
The category URL changed after editing
Review whether the slug was changed. The slug forms the URL-friendly identifier, so changing it can change the category archive address. If the old address is already linked elsewhere, coordinate the URL change with your site’s redirect and link-management process.
