To put over-the-air (OTA) broadcast channels into a DISH Hopper guide, connect an outdoor antenna to a compatible DISH OTA adapter, then connect that adapter by USB to the receiver and run an OTA scan. DISH documents this guide-integration path for Hopper with Sling, Hopper 3, and Wally receivers. The antenna’s coaxial cable goes to the adapter; the adapter’s USB cable goes to the receiver. After the receiver restarts, scan, choose the channels you want listed, and save them. You can then open the Guide and, on the supported setup, record selected OTA channels like other channels.

Antenna-to-TV wiring is a separate, simpler option: connect the antenna directly to the television and switch the TV to its antenna input. That does not place the broadcasts in the DISH guide. The instructions below explain both paths, the exact DISH workflow, compatibility limits, and what to do when reception is weak or channels are missing.

There are two different ways to watch antenna channels

Decide first whether you only need live local broadcasts or want those broadcasts listed alongside DISH channels. The hardware and viewing experience are different.

Approach Connection Where channels appear Recording
Antenna connected to the TV Outdoor antenna coax to the television’s antenna input Use the television’s antenna source/input; DISH guide is not involved Controlled by the television or a separate recording device, not by the DISH Hopper integration described here
DISH guide integration Antenna coax to a DISH OTA adapter, then adapter USB to the receiver Selected OTA channels are added to the compatible receiver’s guide DISH says selected OTA channels can be recorded as usual on the compatible setup

The second route is the one to use if a single Guide button, unified channel list, and Hopper recording matter to you. It requires the DISH OTA adapter; an antenna by itself cannot provide that integration.

Which DISH receivers support the OTA-adapter method?

DISH’s HDTV Over-the-Air Antenna support page names three receiver families for use with its OTA adapter:

Receiver Status in DISH guidance What to verify
Hopper with Sling Listed as compatible with the DISH OTA adapter Confirm that your installed receiver and software expose the OTA settings described below
Hopper 3 Listed as compatible; DISH provides a specific setup transcript Menu wording can vary with receiver software or remote
Wally Listed as compatible with the adapter Follow the receiver’s current on-screen prompts if labels differ
Other Hopper generations or configurations Not established by the cited DISH pages Check DISH support for the exact model before buying an adapter or antenna for guide integration

Do not assume every Hopper supports the same USB adapter or guide feature. The documented compatibility statement is specifically for Hopper with Sling, Hopper 3, and Wally. If your receiver is an older Hopper, a differently configured replacement, or a model whose name you cannot identify, read its model information and confirm compatibility with DISH first.

Hardware and preparation checklist

Gather these items before starting:

  • Outdoor TV antenna: Choose an antenna and mounting position appropriate for your location. DISH does not publish a universal reception distance, expected channel count, or signal-gain figure in the cited support material, so do not buy on the promise of a particular number of stations.
  • Coaxial cable: The antenna’s coax must reach the receiver area and connect to the OTA adapter.
  • DISH OTA adapter: This is the bridge that lets a supported DISH receiver tune OTA broadcasts and add selected channels to its guide.
  • USB cable supplied for the adapter: It connects the adapter to the receiver. DISH’s Hopper settings instruction is explicit: connect the USB cable from the digital OTA adapter to the receiver.
  • Mounting and weatherproofing hardware: Use whatever the antenna manufacturer specifies for outdoor installation, including any grounding or weather sealing required by local electrical rules and the product instructions.

Install and orient the antenna according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Keep the coax run as direct as practical and protect outdoor connectors from moisture. These are installation practices, not a DISH guarantee of reception; the final result depends on your location, obstructions, antenna position, and local broadcasts.

Connect the antenna to the DISH receiver

The physical signal path is short: antenna → OTA adapter → DISH receiver. Follow this order so each connection can be checked independently.

  1. Install or position the antenna. Complete the antenna maker’s mounting and orientation instructions first. Make sure the coaxial lead is available at the receiver location.
  2. Connect the antenna coax. Attach the coaxial cable from the outdoor antenna to the coaxial antenna input on the DISH OTA adapter. Push the connector fully onto the threaded fitting and tighten it by hand.
  3. Connect the adapter to the receiver. Plug the adapter’s USB cable into a USB port on the compatible Hopper or Wally. This is the connection DISH describes for the digital OTA adapter.
  4. Watch for the restart prompt. On the documented Hopper workflow, the receiver presents Attention 977 and asks to restart after the adapter is connected. Accept the restart so the receiver can initialize the adapter.
  5. Leave the adapter connected. The adapter must remain connected whenever you expect the receiver to tune or record the integrated OTA channels. If you instead connect the antenna straight to the television, use the TV’s antenna input and skip the DISH scan steps.

If the receiver never reacts to the adapter, do not continue to channel selection. Recheck both ends of the USB cable and the coaxial connection first, then use the troubleshooting section below.

Scan for OTA channels and add them to the Guide

DISH documents a scan sequence that starts after the adapter is connected and the receiver has restarted. Exact labels can change with receiver software, so treat the following as the current documented workflow rather than a promise that every remote displays identical wording.

Hopper settings workflow

  1. When the receiver displays Attention 1298, accept it to begin the OTA setup.
  2. Choose Find Channels.
  3. Choose Scan. The receiver searches for broadcasts received through the antenna and adapter.
  4. Choose Continue when the scan finishes or the receiver presents the next step.
  5. Review the found channels and select the ones you want displayed in the DISH guide.
  6. Save the selection. Only channels you keep in this list are intended to appear in the integrated guide.

Hopper 3 menu path shown in DISH’s setup transcript

DISH’s Hopper 3 transcript describes going to Settings/OTA/Scan after the restart, selecting the channels, and then using Guide to view them. If your screen uses this path instead of the Attention prompts, follow the on-screen menu labels. The same basic sequence applies: scan, choose channels, save, and open Guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Spanish-language DISH setup page says a scan could take up to five minutes. That is a published estimate for that setup transcript, not a universal guarantee for every receiver, antenna, or signal environment. Let the scan complete before deciding that it has failed.

Confirm the channels and understand guide behavior

After saving, press Guide and look for the OTA channels you selected. The receiver’s guide list is a curated result of the scan, not a promise that every broadcast detectable at another location will be present. If you later move, rotate, replace, or remount the antenna, run another scan so the receiver can update its channel list.

Guide integration does not change the broadcast source. OTA stations still arrive through your antenna, so weather, buildings, terrain, cable condition, and antenna placement can affect whether a channel tunes successfully. A channel can remain listed even when its signal is temporarily unusable; use the troubleshooting checks below rather than deleting it immediately.

Recording rules and the PrimeTime Anytime limitation

DISH says selected OTA channels can be recorded as usual on the compatible Hopper-with-adapter setup. Schedule the recording from the receiver’s guide after the channel has been saved to the OTA list, and keep the adapter and antenna connected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is an important exception: DISH states that PrimeTime Anytime does not work with OTA local channels. OTA broadcasts can therefore be available for ordinary recording while remaining outside the PrimeTime Anytime feature. If that automated primetime function is essential to your routine, plan to schedule OTA programs individually instead.

Troubleshoot a missing adapter, empty scan, or weak picture

The receiver does not detect the OTA adapter

  • Confirm the adapter’s USB cable is plugged into the DISH receiver, not into the television or a charging-only port.
  • Unplug and firmly reconnect the USB cable at both ends, then allow the receiver to restart and display its setup prompts.
  • Check that the antenna coax is attached to the adapter’s antenna input. A USB connection without an antenna signal cannot find broadcasts.
  • Verify that your receiver is one of the models DISH names—Hopper with Sling, Hopper 3, or Wally. For another generation, obtain model-specific confirmation from DISH rather than assuming support.

The scan finds no channels

  1. Inspect the coaxial connector at the adapter and the outdoor antenna. A loose, damaged, or incorrectly routed connector interrupts the signal path.
  2. Confirm the USB cable is still connected to the receiver and that the adapter remained connected through the restart.
  3. Move the antenna to another location and run the scan again. DISH specifically advises relocating the OTA antenna when channels are missing or signal quality is poor.
  4. Recheck the antenna manufacturer’s orientation and installation instructions. A scan cannot compensate for an antenna aimed or mounted incorrectly for your local broadcasts.

Only some expected channels appear

Repeat the connection checks, reposition the antenna, and scan again. Do not infer a guaranteed channel count from the receiver’s result: the cited DISH pages provide no location-specific prediction. If one station remains absent after a sound installation and multiple positions, the limitation may be local reception rather than a Hopper setting.

A channel is listed but the picture breaks up

Treat this as a signal-quality problem first. Check the outdoor coax path and connectors, then move the antenna and rescan. A channel list entry records what the receiver found during a scan; it does not ensure a stable signal at every moment.

The scan seems to take too long

Allow the process to finish. DISH’s Spanish-language transcript says the scan could take up to five minutes, and difficult reception conditions may make the receiver appear inactive while it checks frequencies. If it exceeds that estimate substantially without completing, verify the USB and coax connections, restart the documented scan workflow, and contact DISH if the receiver repeatedly hangs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The guide does not show a channel you selected

Confirm that you saved the channel selection after scanning, then open Guide again. If the channel still does not appear, run a fresh scan after checking the antenna position and connections. Menu names can vary by software, so look for the equivalent OTA channel-selection and save controls.

How to choose an antenna and installation position

The cited DISH material does not rank antenna models or provide a universal range. Make the decision using the constraints that actually differ between installations:

Decision factor What to evaluate Why it matters to the Hopper setup
Receiver compatibility Whether your exact Hopper or Wally is supported by the DISH OTA adapter An antenna cannot add guide channels if the receiver cannot use the adapter
Mounting location Safe outdoor placement, cable length, obstructions, and the antenna maker’s orientation guidance Position affects the signal delivered to the adapter and therefore the scan result
Local reception needs Your terrain, buildings, distance from transmitters, and the broadcasts you want DISH publishes no one-size-fits-all channel or distance promise
Cable and weather protection Coax quality, connector sealing, and a route that avoids unnecessary bends or water entry Signal losses or corrosion can appear as missing or unstable channels

Buying a larger or more expensive antenna is not a substitute for confirming the receiver model and choosing a workable location. If the receiver is unsupported, the TV-input method may still let you watch antenna broadcasts, but it will not create a DISH guide listing.

When the direct-to-TV method is the better choice

Connect the antenna directly to the television when you want the fewest components, your DISH receiver is not among the documented compatible models, or you do not need DISH guide integration. Select the TV’s antenna source/input to watch broadcasts. This path avoids the OTA adapter and receiver scan, but it also means changing TV inputs and using the television’s channel controls instead of the Hopper’s unified guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the adapter path when the priority is a single guide and Hopper recording. In that case, verify compatibility before installation, keep the coax-to-adapter and USB-to-receiver chain intact, and complete the scan-and-save process.

Practical limits to keep in mind

  • No cited DISH page promises a specific number of OTA channels for a household.
  • No cited DISH page guarantees a reception distance or antenna gain for every location.
  • The five-minute scan statement is an estimate from a Spanish-language setup transcript, not a universal timing guarantee.
  • PrimeTime Anytime excludes OTA local channels even though ordinary recording is supported on the compatible setup.
  • Receiver menu wording may change with software or remote revisions; use the equivalent OTA, scan, channel-selection, and save options shown on your screen.

Complete setup checklist

  1. Identify the receiver and confirm it is a Hopper with Sling, Hopper 3, or Wally if you want DISH guide integration.
  2. Install and position the outdoor antenna according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Run the antenna coax to the DISH OTA adapter and attach it securely.
  4. Connect the adapter’s USB cable to the DISH receiver.
  5. Accept Attention 977 to restart when prompted.
  6. Accept Attention 1298 or open the receiver’s OTA scan menu.
  7. Choose Find Channels, Scan, and Continue where those labels appear.
  8. Select the channels to display and save the selection.
  9. Open Guide and test a saved OTA channel.
  10. If reception is poor or channels are missing, check both cables, move the antenna, and scan again.

That sequence delivers the documented result: local OTA broadcasts collected by the antenna become selectable channels in the DISH guide on supported receivers, while unsupported receivers can still use the separate antenna-to-TV input method.
