To add an MLO to FiveM, install it as a resource: create a resource folder, place the map files in a stream subfolder, add an fxmanifest.lua containing this_is_a_map 'yes', register any supplied .ytyp file, and enable the resource with an exact-match ensure line in server.cfg. Restart the server and test the interior in-game.
An MLO is a packaged interior or map modification for Grand Theft Auto V. FiveM does not use a separate “MLO installer”; it loads the package through the same resource system used for other server content. The exact files vary by creator, so preserve the package’s folder structure and read its included instructions before changing names or removing files.

What you need before installing an MLO
Prepare these items before copying anything to the server:
- A working FiveM server with access to its
resourcesdirectory andserver.cfg. - The MLO archive extracted to a temporary folder, rather than edited while it is still compressed.
- The resource’s original folder name and all files supplied by its creator.
- Access to restart the server and enter the location in GTA V for testing.
- CodeWalker if the package requires a generated
_manifest.ymffor placed entities.
An MLO commonly contains map data such as .ymap placement files, .ybn collision files, models, textures, and sometimes a .ytyp archetype definition. Do not assume every archive has the same combination. A package may also include a removal YMAP when it replaces part of the original game world.

FiveM resources are normally stored below the server’s resources directory. The examples below use a resource named my_mlo; substitute the folder name you actually install.
Step 1: Create the resource and stream folders
The official map-mod workflow starts with a new folder inside resources and a child directory named stream. The streamed game assets belong in that child directory.

- Open the server’s
resourcesdirectory. - Create a folder for the MLO, for example
my_mlo. Keep the name simple and avoid spaces while you are troubleshooting. - Inside it, create a folder named exactly
stream. - Copy the MLO’s supplied asset files into
my_mlo/stream. This can include.ymap,.ybn,.ydr,.ytd, and.ytypfiles.
Your initial layout should look similar to this:

Flattening or rearranging that package can break paths expected by its manifest, so only move files when the installation instructions require it. The important FiveM convention is that streamed assets are under the resource’s stream directory.
Step 2: Create fxmanifest.lua
At the top level of the resource, next to stream, create a plain-text file named fxmanifest.lua. The minimal map manifest documented by Cfx.re uses these declarations:
fx_version 'cerulean'ngame 'gta5'nlua54 'yes'nthis_is_a_map 'yes'The file must be named fxmanifest.lua, not fxmanifest.lua.txt. On Windows, enable visible file extensions in File Explorer if necessary. Use straight apostrophes and save the file as UTF-8 or ordinary plain text.
What each line does
fx_version 'cerulean'selects the resource manifest version used by current FiveM resources.game 'gta5'tells FiveM that the resource targets Grand Theft Auto V.lua54 'yes'enables the Lua 5.4 runtime setting used in the documented minimal example. An MLO that contains no scripts still commonly ships with this line.this_is_a_map 'yes'marks the resource as a GTA map. The manifest reference says loading this resource reloads map storage; its value is treated as a string, whileyesis the conventional value shown in the map example.
Do not add script files, client events, or unrelated settings merely because another resource has them. An interior that consists only of streamed map assets can use the minimal manifest unless the creator supplies additional instructions.

Step 3: Register a supplied .ytyp file
A .ytyp defines archetypes used by map models. FiveM’s data-file reference lists DLC_ITYP_REQUEST as a valid data-file key and identifies it as equivalent to PERMANENT_ITYP_FILE for this purpose. A commonly used community pattern is:

If there are several YTYP files, follow the creator’s instructions for listing them rather than guessing. The files { 'stream/**/*' } declaration is a community installation pattern; the exact data-file line is not part of the minimal map example, so treat the package’s own manifest or readme as authoritative when it differs.
If the MLO contains no .ytyp, do not invent a data-file entry. A reference to a nonexistent file can produce resource warnings and makes diagnosis harder.
Step 4: Generate _manifest.ymf when the package needs one
For map assets that contain placed entities, the Cfx.re beginner map guide instructs creators to generate and save _manifest.ymf with CodeWalker. The guide states that this file is needed for models to load correctly.

- Use CodeWalker’s Manifest Generator for the map content.
- Save the generated file as
_manifest.ymfin the location expected by the package, normally within the resource’s streamed map files. - Restart the resource and test again.
Do not generate a new manifest automatically for every download if the creator already supplied one. Keep the supplied file unless the instructions specifically tell you to regenerate it. A generated manifest that is saved in the wrong directory will not correct missing models.
Step 5: Put the resource in the correct location
After creating the manifest and copying the assets, confirm that the top-level folder directly contains fxmanifest.lua and stream:

resources/n└── my_mlo/n ├── fxmanifest.luan └── stream/n ├── ...map files...n └── _manifest.ymfA frequent mistake is one extra nesting level after extraction, such as resources/my_mlo/my_mlo/stream. In that case FiveM sees the outer folder, but the manifest is hidden inside the inner folder. Move the inner resource folder up one level or point ensure at the actual resource path.
Step 6: Enable the MLO in server.cfg
Add an ensure line that matches the resource folder name exactly, including capitalization:
ensure my_mloSave server.cfg, then restart the server. If you group resources in a category folder, use the relative path:
ensure [mapmods]/my-awesome-mloThe path in ensure must correspond to the directory below resources. For example, resources/[mapmods]/my-awesome-mlo/fxmanifest.lua requires ensure [mapmods]/my-awesome-mlo, not ensure my-awesome-mlo.
Load order
Community installation guides commonly place map resources after foundational resources such as spawnmanager, sessionmanager, and the server’s framework. FiveM can start many independent resources in any practical order, but loading the MLO after base resources makes startup logs easier to interpret and avoids conflicts with resources that initialize the player or world. If the MLO creator specifies an order, follow that instruction.
Step 7: Restart and verify in-game
- Restart the FiveM server after changing the resource files or
server.cfg. - Watch the server console for a resource-start message or an error naming the MLO.
- Join the server with a client that has cleared any stale session state.
- Travel to the MLO’s documented coordinates or use the creator’s teleport instruction.
- Walk through doors, stairs, floors, and other collision-heavy areas.
- Check that models, textures, lighting, and props remain visible while moving around.
A resource that starts without an obvious error can still be incomplete. The in-game walk-through is the final check because map placement and collision problems may not appear in the startup console.

Fixing an MLO that does not appear
The resource is not starting
- Check that
fxmanifest.luais at the resource root and has the correct extension. - Compare the
ensurepath with the actual folder name, including uppercase and lowercase characters. - If the resource is inside a category directory, include that directory in the path.
- Look for syntax errors in the manifest, especially unmatched quotes or a data-file entry pointing to a renamed file.
- Restart after each structural change so you know which change affected the result.
The resource starts, but the interior is missing
Check that every supplied .ymap file is under the resource’s stream directory. A YMAP contains placement information; leaving it outside the streamed folder can result in a resource that starts but places nothing in the world. Also verify the location supplied by the creator rather than testing at a guessed coordinate.
If the pack includes a _manifest.ymf, keep it with the other required files. For packages that require placed-entity generation, use CodeWalker’s Manifest Generator and save the result in the expected location.
Players fall through floors
Missing .ybn collision files are the most likely cause. Confirm that all collision files from the archive were copied into stream and that their names and extensions were not changed. A visible floor model does not provide collision by itself; the collision data must also be present and loaded.
Textures are missing or models look incomplete
Check that the associated drawable and texture files, commonly .ydr and .ytd, were copied together with the map files. If the package has a YTYP, verify its filename in the data_file entry. Do not use a generic filename in the manifest when the actual archive uses a different one.
Textures flicker or the area looks duplicated
Flickering can indicate that another resource is loading a map in the same location. Temporarily stop other map resources that cover the area and test the MLO alone. If the conflict disappears, re-enable resources one at a time to identify the overlapping map. Keep only the intended version active.
A replacement MLO leaves the original building visible
Some replacement packs ship a YMAP intended to remove the original world geometry. This is a community packaging practice rather than a universal FiveM requirement. If the creator supplied a removal YMAP, include it exactly as directed; do not download or create a replacement file without instructions, because removing the wrong geometry can damage nearby locations.

Safe update, disable, and removal procedures
Updating an installed MLO
- Stop or restart the server before replacing files.
- Back up the current resource folder, including your manifest edits.
- Extract the new archive into a temporary directory.
- Compare its resource name, folder structure, YTYP names, and supplied manifest with the existing installation.
- Replace the resource files, preserving only custom changes that the new package still requires.
- Restart and test the same interior paths, especially floors and doors.
Temporarily disabling it
Remove or comment out the matching ensure line, then restart. On a live server, use the server’s normal resource-stop procedure if available, but still make the configuration change if the MLO should remain disabled after the next restart.
Removing it permanently
First remove the ensure line and restart. Confirm that the MLO is no longer active, then delete its resource folder. This order prevents the server from attempting to load a resource that has just been deleted and leaves a clear configuration history.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaving the archive compressed instead of extracting its files.
- Putting
fxmanifest.luainsidestreamrather than at the resource root. - Using
ensurewith a display name that does not exactly match the directory. - Renaming YMAP, YBN, YTYP, drawable, or texture files without updating every reference.
- Copying only visible models while omitting collision or placement files.
- Adding a
DLC_ITYP_REQUESTline for a YTYP that the package does not contain. - Running two versions of the same MLO at once.
- Testing only from the spawn point instead of visiting the actual coordinates and walking through the interior.
Minimal working example
For a simple package containing one YTYP, the complete resource can look like this:

When an MLO is ready for players
Consider the installation complete when the server starts the intended resource, the interior appears at the documented location, models and textures stay loaded while moving around, floors and stairs have collision, and no other resource is visibly overlapping it. Keep a copy of the original archive and your final server.cfg entry so a later update can be compared against a known-good installation.

Does an MLO need a script resource?
No. An MLO can be a map-only resource containing streamed assets and a manifest. Add scripts only when the package explicitly requires them.
Can I name the resource folder anything?
Usually yes, but the name must be used exactly in the ensure line, including capitalization. Keep the original name while troubleshooting to avoid path mistakes.
Why does the MLO load but have no collision?
The streamed collision files are probably missing. Check that every supplied .ybn file is inside the resource’s stream directory and that the files were not renamed.
