The reliable way to add an Instagram feed to WordPress now is to use a maintained plugin that supports Meta’s Instagram Graph API, then connect a Business or Creator Instagram account through the plugin. Personal accounts cannot use this current connection route. Instagram Basic Display was retired on December 4, 2024, so older tutorials, tokens and plugins may no longer work.

What you need before adding the feed

Prepare these items before opening WordPress:

  • A Business or Creator Instagram account. A personal account is not eligible for the current Graph API connection used by WordPress feed plugins.
  • Administrator access to your WordPress site. You will normally install the plugin from Plugins > Add New and place its feed block, widget or shortcode on a page.
  • A maintained Instagram feed plugin. Look for a recent changelog entry that explicitly mentions the Instagram Graph API, Instagram Login or compatibility after the Basic Display retirement.
  • A decision about where the feed should appear. Common locations are a dedicated Instagram page, the home page, a sidebar or a footer. The exact insertion method depends on the plugin and your editor.

Have the Instagram login details available, but do not paste an access token into a public page or a theme file. Connection screens are designed to handle authorization without exposing the token to visitors.

Why older WordPress Instagram tutorials fail

Instagram Basic Display was retired on December 4, 2024. WordPress feeds that relied on that API can stop loading even when the site, theme and Instagram account have not changed. A tutorial that tells you to create a Basic Display app, copy an old token or install a plugin that has not been updated for the change is no longer a dependable setup.

The replacement route is the Instagram Graph API. It is intended for professional accounts: Business and Creator profiles. This is why converting a personal profile is the first practical step, and why reconnecting an existing account is often necessary after installing a current plugin.

Choose a plugin that can use the current API

No single plugin is right for every WordPress installation. Compare the connection method and maintenance history rather than choosing only by screenshots or star ratings.

Plugin surfaced for this task Best fit What to verify before installing
Spotlight Sites that want a dedicated Instagram feed presentation That the current release uses the Graph API and provides a reconnect flow for accounts affected by the Basic Display shutdown
Smash Balloon Users who want a configurable feed plugin with an account-connection screen Whether the edition you choose supports your account type and the current Instagram Login/Graph API route
WPZOOM Instagram Widget Widget- and block-oriented WordPress layouts Recent Instagram compatibility notes and whether the required features are included in the free or paid edition
Intagrate Lite Users who prefer a plugin listed in the official WordPress.org directory The latest changelog, supported API, required permissions and whether its current connection process matches your account
The Plus Addons Elementor-based sites that want an Instagram element inside a page-builder workflow Elementor version support, account-type limits and whether Instagram access is included in the edition you plan to use

Free and paid availability changes by plugin and edition, so treat “free” as a feature-tier question rather than a permanent promise. Before activation, check the plugin’s changelog and documentation for a post-December-2024 Graph API update. A plugin that has not been updated since before the shutdown is a poor choice even if its feed preview looks attractive.

Step 1: Convert a personal Instagram account

If the profile is already Business or Creator, skip to the next step. Instagram changes menu wording periodically, but the conversion is performed from the account-type controls in the Instagram app.

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
  2. Open the menu, then enter Settings and activity (the label can vary by app version).
  3. Find the professional-account or account-type section and choose the option to switch to a professional account.
  4. Select Business or Creator, complete the category and contact prompts, and finish the setup.
  5. Return to the account-type area and confirm that the profile now shows the selected professional type.

Choose Business when the profile represents a company, organization or storefront. Choose Creator when it represents an individual, publisher or public-facing creator. Both types are eligible for the current connection route; the choice does not by itself determine the WordPress layout.

Step 2: Install and connect the WordPress plugin

The labels differ between plugins, but the sequence is broadly the same.

  1. In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New.
  2. Search for the plugin you selected, check the author and update date, and install it. Activate it only after confirming that the listing or changelog describes current Instagram API support.
  3. Open the plugin’s settings or feed screen and choose Add account, Connect Instagram or the equivalent button.
  4. When offered a choice of connection methods, select the Instagram professional-account or Instagram Login/Graph API route. Do not select an obsolete Basic Display option.
  5. Authorize the requested access in the Instagram or Meta login window, select the intended account, and return to WordPress.
  6. Save the connection and create a feed. If the plugin offers multiple connected accounts, explicitly choose the account whose posts should appear.

Some plugins may ask for additional Meta setup or account relationships. Requirements are not identical across products and can change with Meta’s permissions model. Follow the plugin’s current connection instructions rather than reusing a token copied from an older tutorial.

Step 3: Put the feed on a page, post, sidebar or footer

After the account is connected, the plugin normally supplies one or more insertion methods.

Block editor

Edit the destination page, select the + inserter, search for the plugin’s Instagram block, choose the connected account and publish or update the page. Use the editor preview only as a first check; a front-end visit is still required.

Widget area

Open Appearance > Widgets (or the widget editor in a block theme), add the plugin’s Instagram widget to the desired sidebar or footer area, select the feed and save.

Elementor or another page builder

Open the page in the builder, search its widget or element list for the plugin’s Instagram component, drag it into the layout and select the connected feed. Confirm that the plugin edition you installed includes the page-builder element.

Shortcode or template insertion

If the plugin supplies a shortcode, copy it from the plugin’s feed screen and paste it into a Shortcode block or the equivalent page-builder element. Keep the shortcode in content rather than editing theme PHP unless you are comfortable restoring the change after a theme update.

Configure columns, spacing, captions, links and the number of posts only after the feed loads. Those controls vary by plugin and edition; do not assume that a setting shown in one plugin exists in another.

Step 4: Verify the feed on the live site

  1. Open the published page in a private browser window or while logged out of WordPress.
  2. Check desktop and mobile widths. A feed that looks correct in the editor can overflow a narrow column on the front end.
  3. Open at least one image link and confirm that it points to the intended Instagram account.
  4. Publish a harmless test post or wait for an existing new post, then check whether the plugin refreshes according to its documented schedule.
  5. Clear the WordPress page cache, object cache and content-delivery cache only if the plugin’s settings indicate that cached output is being served.

Do not treat an empty editor preview as proof that the account is invalid. The front-end page, the plugin’s connection status and its error log provide more useful evidence.

Business versus Creator: which account should you use?

Account type Works with the current Graph API route? Typical fit
Personal No Private or casual profiles that are not being connected to a WordPress feed through this route
Creator Yes Individuals, artists, publishers and public-facing creators
Business Yes Companies, organizations, stores and service providers

The account type determines eligibility, not whether the feed should be a grid, carousel or list. Those presentation choices belong to the WordPress plugin.

Does the Instagram account need a Facebook Page?

Connection requirements are not consistent across every implementation. Guidance for Instagram Login and Graph API setup has differed on whether a Facebook Page must be linked, and plugins can impose their own prerequisites. Do not create or link a Page solely because an old tutorial says it is mandatory.

Instead, read the current plugin connection instructions and the current Meta documentation for the exact route shown in your dashboard. If the authorization screen asks you to select a Page or business asset, complete that step; if it offers a direct Instagram professional-account login, follow that flow. A missing Page should be treated as a documented setup requirement, not as a universal rule.

Troubleshoot an Instagram feed that is not showing

The plugin says the account is unsupported

Confirm that the Instagram profile is Business or Creator. A personal account will not connect through the current Graph API route. If you just changed the account type, sign out of the plugin connection screen and start a new authorization attempt.

The feed worked before the 2024 change, then stopped

Check whether the plugin still depends on Basic Display. Install a maintained release that documents Graph API support, remove the obsolete connection if the plugin provides that option, and reconnect the account through the new method. Reusing an old token does not migrate a Basic Display feed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The account connects, but the page is blank

  • Confirm that the feed block, widget or shortcode is present on the published page and is not hidden by a responsive setting.
  • Open the page while logged out to rule out an editor-only preview issue.
  • Clear page, object and CDN caches, then reload in a private window.
  • Check the plugin’s connection status and error log for an expired authorization or denied permission.
  • Verify that the selected connected account is the one publishing the posts.

Only old posts appear

Check the plugin’s refresh or cache interval. A cached feed may not update immediately after a new Instagram post. Purge the plugin and WordPress caches according to their documented controls; avoid repeatedly disconnecting and reconnecting unless the account authorization itself has failed.

The connection asks for a Facebook Page

Follow the current screen and the plugin’s documentation for that specific integration. Requirements differ between connection methods, and a Page requirement shown by one route does not prove that every Instagram Login implementation needs one.

The feed breaks after a plugin or theme update

Record the plugin version, WordPress version and the browser error, then review the plugin changelog for Instagram compatibility notes. Temporarily switch to a default theme or disable other plugins only in a staging site when possible. Restore the previous working configuration if the update introduced a conflict, and contact the plugin developer with the recorded error rather than generating another legacy token.

Building a custom integration instead of using a plugin

A custom build can make sense when the feed must match a bespoke design, feed posts need to enter another publishing workflow, or the site has strict performance requirements. It also creates responsibility for authentication, token renewal, permissions, error handling, caching and API changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One documented setup path places Instagram account configuration under API Setup with Instagram Login in the Meta app dashboard. That route is distinct from Facebook Login, which targets Facebook Pages. Because dashboard labels, permissions and endpoints can change, confirm every step against Meta’s current developer documentation before writing production code.

Do not hard-code credentials in a theme or expose them in browser JavaScript. Store secrets server-side, request only the permissions your integration needs, cache responses to avoid unnecessary requests, and provide a fallback message when the API is unavailable. A plugin is usually safer for a standard feed because it packages these operational concerns and receives compatibility updates.

Keep the feed working after launch

  • Review the plugin changelog before updating WordPress, the theme or the plugin.
  • Reconnect the account when the plugin reports an expired or revoked authorization; do not paste in a token from an old Basic Display tutorial.
  • Test the live page after major Instagram, Meta or plugin changes.
  • Keep a staging copy of the site so a feed update can be tested without disrupting the public page.
  • Remove unused Instagram plugins and disconnected accounts to reduce maintenance and permissions exposure.

Which setup is right for you?

  • Choose a maintained free-tier plugin when you need a simple feed and its current edition supports your account and layout.
  • Choose a paid edition when the required grid controls, multiple feeds, support or page-builder integration are not included in the free tier. Verify the exact feature list and renewal terms on the plugin’s current page.
  • Choose a custom integration only when a plugin cannot meet a concrete design or workflow requirement and you can maintain Meta authentication and API changes.

For most WordPress sites, the dependable path is straightforward: use a Business or Creator account, install a plugin that documents Graph API support after December 4, 2024, connect the account through its current authorization screen, embed the resulting feed, and verify the published page.
