The shortest reliable path is to send text, a voice, and a model from your server to a text-to-speech (TTS) endpoint, then return the generated audio to your app for playback or download. For a first implementation, use a server-side request such as OpenAI’s audio.speech.create, keep the provider key off client devices, choose file or streaming delivery deliberately, and disclose that listeners are hearing AI-generated speech. Add custom voices only as a separate, consent-based feature.

What an AI voice feature actually does

An AI voice feature converts text into an audio representation that your application can play, cache, or deliver to another system. A normal request has three essential inputs:

  • Text: the words to be spoken.
  • Voice: a built-in voice identifier or, where the provider permits it, a custom voice.
  • Model: the speech model that performs synthesis.

The response is encoded audio. Your app can save it as a file, play it after the response completes, or begin playback while the provider is still transferring chunks. The API call is usually simple; the engineering decisions around authentication, limits, encoding, buffering, retries, disclosure, and consent determine whether the feature is safe and pleasant to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This guide uses the request shape documented for OpenAI’s Audio API as a concrete example. The same architecture applies to other providers, but model names, language coverage, output framing, account eligibility, and pricing are provider-specific and can change.

Choose the architecture before writing code

Recommended request path

  1. The user or your application creates text to be spoken.
  2. Your client sends that text and any allowed voice preference to your authenticated backend.
  3. Your backend validates the request, applies quotas and content rules, and calls the TTS provider with a server-held API key.
  4. The backend either returns an audio file, proxies a stream, or stores the result and returns a reference.
  5. The client decodes the selected format and plays it, while showing the required AI-voice disclosure.

Do not put a long-lived provider key in a browser bundle, mobile package, desktop executable, or any other distributed client. Users can extract keys from shipped code. A backend also gives you one place to enforce per-user limits, normalize text, redact sensitive data, cache repeated requests, and rotate credentials.

When a direct client call is appropriate

A direct call can be acceptable only when the provider explicitly supports a short-lived, narrowly scoped client credential and your security design accounts for its exposure. The documented OpenAI setup for custom voices directs developers to keep the key on a trusted server, so a conventional integration should route through your backend.

Verify access and pick a starting model

OpenAI’s guide documents a speech endpoint using gpt-4o-mini-tts. It also describes tts-1 and tts-1-hd. Model availability, voice inventories, and account permissions are not permanent; check the provider’s current documentation and your account before hard-coding a model choice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a proof of concept, choose one model and one built-in voice, then make the request work end to end. Delay broad voice selectors, localization, caching, and custom-voice controls until you have verified playback in every target client.

Implement a basic server-side request

SDK request shape

The documented SDK pattern supplies a model, voice, and input text:

const speech = await client.audio.speech.create({
  model: 'gpt-4o-mini-tts',
  voice: 'your-approved-voice',
  input: text
});

The returned object represents generated audio. In a server route, write its bytes to a response with the correct content type, or save them to object storage and return a short-lived download reference. The exact SDK method for converting the response to bytes depends on the language runtime; follow the current SDK reference rather than assuming that a browser response is already playable.

HTTP request shape

An HTTP integration has the same logical fields: an authenticated POST to the provider’s speech endpoint with a JSON body containing model, voice, and input. Keep the authorization header on the server. Your own endpoint can expose a smaller contract, for example:

RØDE PodMic Cardioid Dynamic Broadcast Microphone, XLR
  • XLR MICROPHONE: requires an audio interface or mixer with an XLR input, not a USB microphone
  • PODCAST-READY SOUND: broadcast-quality dynamic capsule tuned for speech, rejects room noise in untreated spaces
  • BUILT-IN POP PROTECTION: internal pop filter and shock mounting tame plosives and desk thumps without extra accessories
  • ALL-METAL BUILD: robust body designed to sit on air for years, matches the RØDECaster family
  • IN THE BOX: PodMic with integrated swing mount, connects to any XLR interface, mixer or RØDECaster
POST /api/speech
Content-Type: application/json

{
'text': 'A short sentence to read aloud.',
  'voice': 'your-approved-voice'
}

Validate the client payload before forwarding it. Reject missing text, unsupported voice identifiers, and requests over your chosen product limit. Return a stable error format from your backend so clients do not need to understand provider-specific error messages.

Respect the documented input limit

The Audio API reference lists a maximum text input of 4096 characters for a speech request. Treat that as a hard per-request ceiling, not as a target length. Count characters using the same convention as the provider where possible, and reserve room for any normalization your backend performs.

Long articles, transcripts, or notifications should be split into meaningful chunks rather than cut at an arbitrary character boundary. Prefer paragraph or sentence boundaries, preserve punctuation, and keep a small overlap only if your product requires continuity and can tolerate repeated words. Queue chunks in order, associate each result with a request ID, and stop the queue when a user cancels playback. Chunking policy, retry counts, caching, and quotas are application decisions; there is no universal policy in the API documentation.

Decide between a generated file and streaming

Delivery mode How it works Best fit Costs and risks
Complete file Wait for the full response, then save or play one audio object. Downloads, podcasts, cached lessons, background jobs, and simple integrations. Longer time before the first word; straightforward retries and seeking.
Streaming Forward provider chunks to the client and start playback before synthesis finishes. Conversational interfaces and experiences where first-audio latency matters. Requires buffering, cancellation, reconnect handling, and correct interpretation of chunk framing.

OpenAI documents chunk transfer for streaming and says playback can start before the complete audio is available. It recommends WAV or PCM when the fastest response time is the priority. MP3 is the default output, with Opus, AAC, FLAC, WAV, and PCM also documented. Select a format your target playback stack handles reliably; the fastest server response is not useful if a client cannot decode the stream.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

File workflow

  1. Send the validated text to the speech endpoint.
  2. Read the complete response and verify that bytes were returned.
  3. Store the file only if you need replay, sharing, offline use, or a cache.
  4. Set the response content type to match the selected encoding.
  5. Return the file or a time-limited reference to the client.

Use deterministic cache keys that include normalized text, model, voice, and output format. Do not cache private text in a shared namespace. If users can edit text, invalidate or version the cache when any synthesis input changes.

Streaming workflow

  1. Open a backend request to the provider and immediately send an appropriate response stream to the client.
  2. Forward only valid audio bytes; do not prepend JSON or debug text to a binary stream.
  3. Buffer enough data for the client decoder to avoid gaps, but keep the buffer bounded so cancellation frees resources.
  4. Propagate client cancellation to the provider request.
  5. Emit a clear end-of-stream signal through your transport, not inside the audio bytes.

Never assume that one provider’s chunk is a complete audio file. Google’s Gemini documentation, for example, describes default streaming output as headerless, raw 16-bit signed little-endian PCM at 24 kHz mono, while unary output uses a WAV container. A WAV header and raw PCM frames require different playback handling. Inspect the provider’s framing and sample format, then adapt it to the decoder used by your browser, mobile, or desktop stack.

Match encoding to the playback stack

Use compressed formats when bandwidth and storage matter and your clients have dependable decoders. MP3 is a broadly supported default. Opus can be efficient for interactive delivery when the target stack supports it. AAC is common in some mobile and media pipelines. FLAC preserves lossless audio at the cost of larger files than many compressed speech formats. WAV and PCM are useful when you need simple, low-latency frames or direct access to samples.

Choose voices and languages based on real content

The OpenAI guide lists 13 built-in voice names and states that those voices are currently optimized for English. It also allows text in a listed set of languages, but the documentation does not establish equal pronunciation quality across those languages. Do not infer language quality from the fact that an input is accepted.

Create a representative evaluation set before selecting a default voice. Include names, dates, abbreviations, numbers, punctuation, code terms, and the longest phrases users will hear. Have native or fluent reviewers listen to each target language and accent. Record which voice, model, and normalization rules produced each sample so a later model update can be diagnosed.

Expose only voices that you have tested. If your product lets users choose a voice, store the provider identifier server-side and map it to a friendly label. This prevents arbitrary identifiers from being passed through your API and lets you retire a voice without breaking old clients.

Normalize text before synthesis

TTS engines may pronounce raw application text literally. Add a normalization layer appropriate to your content:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Expand abbreviations that users would not recognize when spoken.
  • Convert dates, currencies, units, and identifiers into an unambiguous spoken form.
  • Remove markup, tracking parameters, hidden fields, and accidental control characters.
  • Preserve sentence punctuation so pauses and emphasis remain intelligible.
  • Keep user-generated content within your safety and privacy policy.

Do not silently change the meaning of legal, medical, financial, or instructional text. Keep the original text alongside the normalized version for auditability, and provide a way to inspect what was sent for debugging without exposing sensitive content to unauthorized staff.

Secure credentials, data, and abuse controls

Protect the provider key

  • Load the key from a server-side secret store or environment configuration.
  • Never log authorization headers or full provider requests by default.
  • Use separate credentials for development, staging, and production.
  • Rotate keys and revoke them promptly if a leak is suspected.
  • Restrict outbound access from the backend to the endpoints it needs.

Control who can spend your quota

Require your normal application authentication before accepting a speech request. Apply per-user and per-organization quotas, request-size limits, concurrency limits, and timeouts. Track provider usage by account and feature, but redact or hash text where full content is not needed. A queue can smooth bursts; a circuit breaker can stop a provider outage from consuming all workers.

Handle sensitive text deliberately

Speech requests may contain personal, confidential, or regulated information. Define retention, deletion, and access rules for source text, generated audio, logs, and caches. Tell users when content is sent to an external provider. If the feature reads private messages or records, obtain the permissions your product and jurisdiction require before enabling it.

Provide the required AI disclosure

OpenAI’s official text-to-speech guide states: “Our usage policies require you to provide a clear disclosure to end users that the TTS voice they are hearing is AI-generated and not a human voice.” Make that disclosure visible at the point where speech is heard, not only in a buried terms page. Suitable treatments include a persistent label near the player, an accessible announcement, or a transcript-area notice that remains available while audio plays.

Custom voices are an optional, restricted workflow

A custom voice is not required for ordinary TTS. It adds identity, consent, storage, review, and abuse responsibilities, so treat it as a separate feature with explicit eligibility checks.

Documented OpenAI workflow

  1. Confirm that your organization is eligible. The guide limits custom-voice access to eligible customers.
  2. Obtain the speaker’s permission and record the provider’s required consent phrase.
  3. Record a matching voice sample from that same person.
  4. Upload the consent recording and sample through the trusted server flow, following the current provider requirements.
  5. Store the resulting voice identifier as sensitive data and restrict who can invoke it.
  6. Show the AI disclosure whenever the custom voice is played.

The documented English consent phrase is: “I am the owner of this voice and I consent to OpenAI using this voice to create a synthetic voice model.” The guide says the consent recording must contain one approved phrase only; divergence can cause the submission to fail. This is the provider’s prescribed workflow phrase, not general legal advice and not proof that you have rights to every intended use.

Recording requirements and limits

The guide recommends a quiet recording space, a professional XLR microphone, and consistent delivery. An XLR microphone is an optional recording-quality aid, not a prerequisite for calling a standard speech endpoint. Custom-voice samples are limited to 30 seconds, and the guide says an organization can create at most 20 custom voices. Confirm current limits and eligibility before designing your data model around them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep consent evidence linked to the voice record, including who consented, when, for which use, and how withdrawal is handled. If a speaker revokes permission, disable new synthesis, remove cached outputs where appropriate, and document the result. Do not let users upload a sample and impersonate another person without an authorization process.

Compare providers without assuming a winner

There is no reliable universal winner for quality, latency, or price. Compare services against your own workload and account region using the following criteria:

Criterion Questions to answer
Language coverage Are your target languages and accents supported, and how do native reviewers rate names, numbers, and domain terms?
Streaming Is chunked output available, and what are the framing, sample rate, channel count, and end-of-stream rules?
Encoding Can the service produce formats your clients decode without conversion?
Voices and controls How many built-in voices are available, what style controls exist, and are custom voices restricted?
Access and geography Is the model enabled for your account and reader locations, and are quotas sufficient?
Security integration Can you keep credentials server-side, control retention, and obtain the audit information your product needs?
Current total cost What are the present rates for characters, audio duration, storage, transfer, and any custom-voice enrollment?

Google Gemini, Google Cloud Text-to-Speech, and Apple’s AVFoundation are viable comparison paths, but their documentation does not establish parity with OpenAI in quality, cost, language coverage, or latency. Obtain current official pricing and test the same representative text, concurrency, and network conditions before selecting a provider.

Reliability, observability, and failure recovery

Validate before calling

  • Reject empty or over-limit input.
  • Allow-list model and voice identifiers.
  • Normalize text and record a request hash.
  • Check that the authenticated user has quota and permission.

Retry safely

Retry transient network failures and provider rate limits with bounded exponential backoff and jitter. Do not blindly retry validation errors, authentication failures, or content-policy rejections. Include an idempotency strategy so a timeout does not create duplicate stored files or double-charge a workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure the right events

Record request acceptance, provider response status, time to first audio byte, total generation time, bytes delivered, playback-start success, cancellation, and decoder errors. Keep model, voice, format, and client version with each metric. These measurements let you distinguish provider latency from your own queue, network, and playback delays without claiming a benchmark you have not run.

Give users a fallback

If streaming fails, offer complete-file playback or a retry. If synthesis is unavailable, keep the text visible and provide an accessible text alternative. For long content, let users resume from the last completed chunk rather than restarting the entire item.

Production checklist

  • Backend proxy is in place; no long-lived provider key ships to clients.
  • Model, voice, and format are allow-listed and configurable.
  • Input is normalized, bounded at 4096 characters per documented request, and chunked at sensible sentence boundaries.
  • File and streaming paths have been tested on every supported client.
  • Streaming code understands the provider’s actual container or raw-frame format.
  • Per-user quotas, concurrency limits, timeouts, cancellation, and bounded retries are implemented.
  • Logs and caches protect private text and audio.
  • Users see a clear AI-generated voice disclosure at playback.
  • Language and pronunciation have been reviewed with representative native or fluent listeners.
  • Custom voices, if enabled, require eligibility, the prescribed consent recording, a matching sample, and a withdrawal process.
  • Current provider access, limits, and pricing are checked again before launch.

A practical rollout plan

Phase 1: one voice, complete files

Implement the server route, one model, one tested voice, MP3 output, authentication, quotas, and the disclosure. Use short text and verify that every client can play the returned file.

Phase 2: caching and longer content

Add normalization, sentence-aware chunking, cache keys, queueing, cancellation, and resumable playback. Measure generation and playback metrics before optimizing.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Phase 3: streaming

Add a separate streaming route after your client decoder and transport are proven. Test slow networks, interrupted connections, rapid cancellation, and provider rate limits. Keep complete-file playback as a fallback.

Phase 4: multilingual or custom voices

Expand languages only after fluent review of real content. Add custom voices only when eligibility, consent storage, sample handling, disclosure, and revocation are fully designed.

The core implementation is therefore small: authenticated server code sends text, model, and voice; the client receives a supported audio encoding; and the product clearly identifies the speech as AI-generated. The surrounding controls are what make that basic API call dependable in a real app.
