Enshrouded does not use one server-wide administrator password. Admin access is granted through the Admin object in the userGroups array of enshrouded_server.json. Set a password on that group, enable the permissions you want, restart the server, and have the player join with that group password.
How Enshrouded server administration works
Dedicated servers assign permissions by group. Each object in userGroups has a name, a password, and permission flags. A player receives the permissions of the group whose password they enter when joining.
The practical consequence is that you do not add an administrator by editing a player name or by creating a separate global admin-password field. You protect the Admin group password and give it only to people who should have administrative powers.
Group names and defaults can differ between server versions. Some generated files show groups such as Admin, Friend, Guest, or Visitor; other versions show Everyone instead. Treat the file generated by your own server as authoritative.

Choose the right procedure

If a panel exposes both a password field and a file manager, use the panel’s documented field first. File edits are appropriate only when the provider allows them and does not regenerate the configuration.
Before changing anything
- Confirm you have the right server. A local test instance and a production instance can each have their own
enshrouded_server.json. Check the server name, folder, or panel instance identifier. - Stop the server cleanly. Editing while the process is running can cause the running process to retain old values or write over your changes during shutdown.
- Back up the file. Download or copy
enshrouded_server.jsonbefore editing. Preserve the original filename and encoding in the backup. - Use a plain-text editor. Avoid word processors that insert curly quotation marks or formatting characters.
- Decide who needs which access. Full administration is not necessary for every regular player. You can keep the full Admin password limited to owners and use a lower-permission group for trusted helpers if your generated file supports it.
Add an administrator by editing the JSON file
1. Stop the server
Stop the dedicated-server process from your operating system, service manager, or hosting panel. Wait until the panel reports that it is offline and no server process is still writing files.
2. Open enshrouded_server.json
The file is normally created after the server starts for the first time. Open the copy in the server’s configuration folder through local file access, SFTP, or the host’s file manager. If the file is missing, start the server once, stop it, and check the generated configuration directory rather than creating a second file in an arbitrary folder.
3. Locate userGroups
Search for the exact key userGroups. It should contain an array surrounded by square brackets. The generated file normally includes an Admin entry. Do not rename unrelated keys, reorder the whole file, or delete groups simply because their names differ from an online example.
4. Set the Admin password and permissions
Replace the placeholder value in the Admin object’s password property with a long, unique password. Do not reuse your operating-system, Steam, email, or hosting-panel password. Keep the value inside normal JSON quotation marks.

}Use the keys already present in your generated file. In particular, canEditWorld appears in newer examples but not in every older example. If your file does not contain a key, do not assume that adding a similarly named key will work; compare it with the structure produced by your server version.

For a full administrator, the permission flags in the Admin entry are generally enabled. The flags shown in current guides include:

5. Validate the JSON
JSON is strict. A single missing comma, an extra comma, an unmatched brace, or a smart quote can make the server ignore the group settings or fail to load them.
- Check that every property name and text value uses straight double quotes.
- Check that each object is enclosed in matching braces and the
userGroupscollection in matching brackets. - Check that adjacent properties are separated by commas, but the final property in an object has no trailing comma.
- Run the complete file through a trusted JSON validator or your editor’s JSON checker.
- Fix every reported error before uploading or starting the server. Do not paste only the Admin object into a validator if the surrounding file may also be malformed.
6. Save, upload, and restart
Save the file, upload it to the same directory if you edited a local copy, and start the server. Wait for the server to finish starting before testing. If the process reports a configuration error, stop it, restore the backup, and reapply only the necessary change with valid JSON.
7. Join with the Admin group password
When the administrator connects, they must enter the password assigned to the Admin group. Entering a different group’s password results in that group’s permissions, even if the player is the server owner. Test an administrative action that the enabled flags should allow, such as a permitted moderation action, without using destructive world changes as the first test.

Set the password on a hosted server or control panel
Use the panel’s saved setting
- Stop the server from the provider’s control panel.
- Open the server’s Settings, Startup, or configuration page.
- Find the field associated with the
Adminentry inuserGroups, usually labelled Admin Password or group password. - Enter a new unique password and save the settings.
- Start or restart the server, then have the administrator join with that password.
Panel labels vary. A field called “server password” may refer to general access rather than the Admin group’s credential. Confirm that the setting is specifically attached to the Admin group or to userGroups.
When a manual panel file edit does not persist
Some managed hosts build enshrouded_server.json at startup from values stored in the panel. In that arrangement, a direct file edit can appear correct while the server is stopped and then be replaced on the next boot. If your password reverts, compare the panel’s saved Admin value with the file, update the panel field, save it, and restart again.
Remove administrative access
To disable the existing Admin group on a panel that supports this option, clear the Admin password in the panel’s group setting and save it. Confirm the provider’s behavior: some panels remove or disable the group when the field is blank, while others may require deleting or editing the group in a configuration editor. Do not assume that clearing a separate general server-password field removes Admin permissions.
Create a lower-permission moderator group
You can separate moderation from full world and base control by adding another object to userGroups, provided the server version accepts custom groups. Give it a distinct name and password, then enable only the flags that role needs. For example, a moderator might be allowed to kick or ban while leaving world and base-editing flags disabled.
Because custom-group support and exact defaults are not confirmed consistently across versions, copy the property structure used by an existing group in your own file. Keep the Admin group as a recovery path, validate the complete JSON, and test the moderator password with a non-destructive action before relying on it.

Why the old top-level password can be misleading
Community hosting guidance says that, since Update 2, the top-level password line is no longer the dedicated-server administrator credential and that group passwords in userGroups control access instead. The exact update behavior is not confirmed in official developer documentation. For current servers, set the password on the relevant group and use the structure your generated file provides rather than relying on a top-level password alone.
Troubleshoot an administrator who has no admin powers
The player entered the wrong password
Ask the player to use the exact Admin-group password, including capitalization and punctuation. A password for Friend, Guest, Visitor, or Everyone grants that group’s permissions instead.
The file was edited while the server was running
Stop the server, make the edit, validate it, and restart. If the server writes configuration on shutdown, changes made during runtime may be lost.

The panel restored an older value
Check the provider’s Settings or Startup values after restarting. If the panel’s saved value differs from the file, change the panel value and restart. Keep a copy of the final working configuration so you can identify which layer changed it.
A property name does not work
Compare the spelling and capitalization with the generated file. Guides show differences between versions, including whether canEditWorld appears. An unfamiliar or misspelled key may be ignored; adding more flags is not a substitute for matching the server’s own schema.

The server will not start after the edit
Restore the backup to confirm that the problem is configuration syntax rather than the server itself. Then reapply the password change carefully, check commas and quotation marks, and validate the entire file before restarting.
Admin works but a specific action is unavailable
Inspect the relevant flag in the Admin object. Full access requires the needed permission to be enabled, and the available flags can vary by server version. Change one setting at a time, restart, and test again so you can identify which permission controls the action.
Operate admin credentials safely
- Use a password generated for this server group, not a personal account password.
- Share the Admin password only through a private channel and never in public chat, screenshots, issue trackers, or livestream overlays.
- Give regular players their normal group password rather than the Admin credential.
- Rotate the Admin password when a staff member leaves or when it may have been exposed.
- Back up the working JSON before changing permissions, updating the server, or migrating hosts.
- After every change, join once with an ordinary group and once with the intended administrative group to confirm that privileges are separated correctly.
Version differences you should account for
The safest reference is the configuration generated by the exact server build you run. Online examples disagree about default group names, the presence of canEditWorld, and the value of reservedSlots. Those differences do not mean your file is broken. They mean that copying an entire example can silently remove keys or introduce ones your build does not recognize.
No official developer reference was identified that definitively documents every group field, default permission, or the historical change to the top-level password. Treat third-party examples as patterns, not as a replacement for inspecting and validating your own generated file.
