To add an administrator, identify the player’s platform ID, then either run admin add <your ID> 0 in the server console or add that ID to the server’s generated admin file (usually serveradmin.xml) with permission_level="0". Stop the server before a manual file edit, save the change, and start it again unless your console method reports that it applied immediately.
What you need before adding an administrator
Have these items ready:
- Access to the dedicated server’s console, RCON, or web console; or access to the server’s files through your host panel or operating system.
- The player’s platform identifier. Steam players need a SteamID64. Epic players use an EOS ID instead.
- The server’s own generated admin file and its current XML structure. File names, locations, and attributes vary by game version and host.
- A maintenance window if you will edit the file manually. A server that is still running can overwrite or ignore the change.
This procedure is for a dedicated 7 Days to Die server. A locally hosted single-player game has different controls and does not necessarily create the same server files.

Use the console when you have reliable console access and want to avoid guessing a file path. Use the file method when console access is unavailable, or when you need to review several administrators in one place.
Step 1: Find the correct platform ID
Steam players: obtain the SteamID64
A SteamID64 is normally a 17-digit number beginning with 7656. You can obtain it from a SteamID lookup service such as steamid.io, from the numeric Steam profile URL when the profile does not use a custom URL, or from the running server itself.

If the player is online, open the server console and run:
listplayeridsThe shorthand lpi is also used for this command. Copy the platform ID exactly as displayed; do not copy the player’s display name, friend code, or a shortened profile number.

Epic players: use the EOS ID
Epic accounts do not use a SteamID64. The server identifies them with an EOS ID. Use the identifier shown by listplayerids (or lpi) while the Epic player is connected, and preserve the server’s exact spelling and punctuation.
Check the ID before changing anything
- Compare the ID with the player’s profile or the name shown by the server command.
- Keep the complete value, including every digit or character.
- Do not add spaces, quotation marks, or a prefix unless the command or the generated XML explicitly uses one.
- If the same person plays through different platforms, treat each platform identifier as a separate account.
Method 1: Add the administrator with the server console
The console form shown by current guides is:
admin add <your ID> 0For Steam, some server builds and guides show the identifier with a steam_ prefix:
admin add steam_<your ID> 0Replace the angle-bracketed text with the complete ID you obtained. Do not use the prefix for an EOS account unless your server’s own command help or output requires it.

Where to run the command
- Open the dedicated server’s web console, RCON connection, or local server console.
- Paste the command with the player’s platform ID and the permission value
0. - Submit it and read the response. A successful response should confirm that the admin entry was added or that the permission was changed.
- Have the player reconnect if commands are unavailable during an existing session, then test one low-impact administrative command.
Guides describe this command as writing the entry to serveradmin.xml and applying it without a restart. Treat that as version-dependent: if the console reports an error, or the player still has ordinary permissions after reconnecting, stop and start the server and inspect the generated file.

- Confirm that you are connected to the dedicated server console, not the client chat box.
- Try the syntax shown by your server’s built-in command help; some builds expect the
steam_prefix and others accept the bare ID. - Verify that the second argument is a numeric permission level, such as
0, rather than a role name. - Check that the ID belongs to the platform on which the player joined.
- If your host exposes only RCON and not a web console, use the RCON command interface or switch to the XML method.
Method 2: Edit serveradmin.xml
Stop the server first
Fully shut down the server before editing. A running process may keep the old file in memory, write over your changes during shutdown, or leave a partially written XML file. Wait until the host panel reports that the server is stopped and no server process remains active.
Locate the file generated by your server
serveradmin.xml is the most common file name. The exact location is not universal:
- One current hosting layout places it at
/.local/share/7DaysToDie/Saves/serveradmin.xml, reachable through the host panel’s Files tab. - Another layout stores it in the world-save directory and does not create it until the server has started at least once.
- Some installations also provide
serveradmincustom.xmlfor persistent custom entries. Its administrator block may be commented out until you enable it.
Use the file your own installation generated rather than copying a path from another host. If no file exists, start the server once, let it finish creating the world and configuration files, stop it cleanly, and search the save and configuration directories again. Do not substitute pingadmin.xml; references to that name apply to much older alpha 20.4-era material.
Back up the original
Download or duplicate the XML file before editing. Keep the backup outside the live configuration directory and give it a date-based name. If the server fails to start afterward, restore the backup, confirm the server works, and then make a smaller change.

Match the XML format your server already uses
There are at least two formats in circulation. The correct format is the one present in the file generated by your server version. Do not combine attributes from one format with elements from another.

The numeric value in these examples is illustrative. Replace it with the target player’s actual ID. Some older forum examples place a steamID attribute on a user element, while newer files use platform, userid, and name. That difference is why copying a snippet from a different game version can silently fail.
Insert the entry without breaking XML
- Open the generated file in a plain-text or code editor that preserves UTF-8 text and does not add rich-text formatting.
- Find the existing
<admins>section or the administrator block documented by the file’s comments. - Copy one existing administrator line, if present, and change only the ID, platform, label, and permission value required for the new account.
- Keep the new line inside the same parent element. Do not create a second root element or remove the closing tag.
- Save the file, then check that every opening XML tag has a matching closing tag or uses the self-closing form shown in the file.
- Start the server and watch the startup log for XML parsing errors. A clean start does not by itself prove the ID is correct, so verify the player’s permissions after joining.
If the file contains a commented administrator example, remove only the comment markers around the entry you intend to enable. Preserve the surrounding structure and comments until the change has been tested.

The file can also assign a minimum permission level to an individual command through a command entry’s cmd and permission_level attributes. For example, a moderator at level 100 might be allowed to kick players while being unable to shut the server down. The exact command thresholds are version-dependent; inspect the commands already present in your file instead of assuming every build uses the same policy.

Give level 0 only to people who genuinely need unrestricted control. For a helper who only moderates players, choose a documented moderator level and test the required commands. Keep a private record of who has access, because an administrator can change worlds, permissions, and server configuration.

Verify that the new admin works
- Confirm that the server completed startup without an XML or configuration error.
- Have the player connect using the same Steam or Epic account that produced the ID.
- Run a harmless administrative check, such as opening the command interface or using a command appropriate to the assigned level.
- Test a restricted action only if it is safe for the current world and the player’s role.
- If the player remains a regular user, compare the in-game account with the ID in the file and review the startup log for a rejected or ignored entry.
A name in the XML is generally a label, not the identity check. The platform ID is what must match the connecting account.

The file cannot be found
Start the server once, stop it cleanly, and search the world-save and configuration directories for serveradmin.xml. On hosted servers, use the panel’s Files view and check whether the provider exposes a separate save directory. If the installation generates a differently named administrator file, follow that file’s comments and structure.
The server ignores a valid-looking entry
Most often, the entry is in the wrong file, outside the administrator block, or written in a schema from another version. Compare your line with an existing generated entry character for character, including attribute capitalization. Verify that the ID is a SteamID64 for Steam or an EOS ID for Epic, then restart after stopping the server completely.
The server will not start after editing
Restore the backup, start the server to confirm recovery, and then inspect the edited file for a missing quote, angle bracket, closing tag, or accidental rich-text character. Reapply only one change at a time. Do not delete unrelated configuration entries while repairing the XML.
The console command says the player is unknown
The player may be offline, the identifier may be incomplete, or the command may require the platform prefix. Have the player join, run listplayerids or lpi, and copy the exact value shown. For Epic accounts, do not attempt to convert the EOS ID into a SteamID64.

The command works but privileges disappear after a restart
Inspect serveradmin.xml after issuing the command. If no entry was written, the console may be connected to a different instance, or the host may restrict writes to a custom administrator file. Add the account to the file generated by that instance while it is stopped, then start it again and verify the result.
Another administrator can no longer connect
Check whether the edit replaced the entire <admins> block instead of adding a line. Restore the backup if necessary, then add each administrator as a separate entry using the same schema. Keep one backup after every confirmed change.
Operational and security practices
- Use a private console or RCON connection; never post a SteamID64 or EOS ID together with server access credentials in a public chat.
- Stop the server before manual edits and wait for a clean shutdown confirmation.
- Back up the administrator file before every structural change.
- Prefer a lower moderator level when full control is unnecessary.
- Review the administrator list when staff leave, accounts change platform, or the server world is transferred to another host.
- After a game update, compare the newly generated file structure before applying old XML snippets. File paths and schemas can change between versions.

Can I add an admin while the server is running?
