To create a WordPress post category, sign in to your dashboard, open Posts > Categories, enter a unique name, optionally set a slug, choose a parent if it is a subcategory, add a description if useful, and click Add New Category. You can then assign the category to a post. If you are already writing the post in the Block Editor, you can create the category directly from the post settings sidebar instead.
This guide explains both workflows, how to decide between a top-level category and a child category, what each field controls, and why a newly created category may not immediately appear on the public site.
What a WordPress post category does
Categories group related blog posts into browsable sections. Each category has an archive page that gathers the posts assigned to it. Categories can be hierarchical, so a broad subject can contain narrower child categories. Tags are different: they are non-hierarchical keywords and cannot have parent or child relationships. The distinction is documented in WordPress’s Administration Screens reference.

For example, Animals might be a top-level category, with Mammals and Birds beneath it. A tag such as field guide could cross those sections without becoming a section of the site itself.

The category name and slug are separate values. The name is the reader-facing label. The slug is the URL-friendly identifier used in the category link. A slug such as animals can produce a URL like /category/animals/, although the final address depends on the site’s domain and permalink configuration.
Decide what you need before creating it
Use a category for a broad section
Create a category when readers may want to browse a group of posts as a continuing section of your site. Categories work well for subjects, departments, content formats, or other durable groupings that deserve an archive. Before adding one, look at the existing category list and ask whether an existing section already covers the subject. A clear, distinct category is easier to assign consistently than several near-duplicates.
Use a tag for a cross-cutting keyword
Choose a tag when the term describes a characteristic that can appear across several unrelated sections. Tags have no parent-child hierarchy, so they are better for keywords that do not belong in your main navigation structure. WordPress’s explanation of categories and tags is available in the Administration Screens documentation.

Choose a top-level category or a child
Keep the category top-level when it represents an independent, broad subject. Choose a parent when the new category is a meaningful subdivision of an existing one. A child category has its own archive, while the parent archive includes posts from its child categories. Do not add a parent merely to make the list look nested; use hierarchy only when it helps readers understand how subjects relate.
Check the name and URL before saving
Category names and slugs should be distinct from existing values. A name is what administrators and readers recognize, while the slug becomes part of the category link. If the URL matters for navigation or links you plan to share, enter or review the slug rather than accepting it without checking. WordPress generates a URL-friendly slug when you leave the field blank, but the generated result may not be the wording you intended.
Decide whether a description is useful
The description is optional. It can explain the scope of the category for people who maintain the site, and some themes display it on the category archive. Other themes do not show it publicly, so do not depend on the description as the only way to explain a section to visitors.
Method 1: Create a category from Posts > Categories
The Categories screen is the site-wide management workflow. It exposes the complete set of category fields and is the best choice when you are planning your taxonomy before writing a specific post. WordPress documents this screen at Posts Categories screen.

- In the left-hand menu, open Posts > Categories.
- In the Add New Category form, enter the category’s name.
- Optionally enter a slug. If you leave it blank, WordPress generates one from the name; review the generated value if the public URL matters to you.
- Use the Parent control if this is a subcategory. Leave it at the top-level option when the category is independent.
- Optionally enter a description.
- Click Add New Category. The saved category should appear in the category table on the same screen.
Understand each field before you save
| Field | What to enter | Important behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Name | The label readers and administrators will see. | The category name must be unique within the site’s category structure. Pick a distinct, stable label rather than a near-duplicate of an existing category. |
| Slug | A lowercase, URL-friendly identifier, such as animals. |
The slug must be unique. It is used in the category URL, which may look like /category/animals/ depending on the site address and configuration. |
| Parent | An existing category under which this one belongs, or the top-level option. | WordPress supports hierarchical categories. Selecting a parent makes the new category a child and gives it its own archive beneath that subject structure. |
| Description | A short explanation of what belongs in the category. | The description is optional. Whether visitors see it is controlled by the active theme, but it can still help administrators maintain the site. |
The uniqueness rules and field behavior are described in the official category-screen documentation. If a name or slug conflicts with an existing value, choose a different value rather than relying on capitalization or punctuation to distinguish it.
Review the category table after saving
The category table is a useful first confirmation. Find the new name, check whether it is shown under the intended parent, and review the slug or description if those details matter to your site. This check catches a wrong parent or a generated slug before you begin assigning the category to several posts.

Method 2: Create a category while editing a post
The Block Editor offers a faster route when the category is needed for the post currently being written. This method creates the category and lets you assign it without leaving the editor. The relevant controls are described in WordPress’s Page/Post Settings sidebar documentation.
- Open a new post or edit an existing post in the Block Editor.
- Open the post settings sidebar if it is not already visible.
- Find the Categories panel.
- Choose Add New Category.
- Enter the new category name.
- Select a parent if the category belongs under an existing category.
- Use the add button to create it.
- Make sure the new category is selected for the post, then save the post as a draft, publish it, or click Update for an existing post.
The editor-focused form concentrates on name, parent selection, and assignment. If you need to carefully control the slug or write a longer administrative description, use the full Posts > Categories screen instead. Creating the category and selecting it are separate actions, so check that its selection remains active before saving the post.
Top-level category or subcategory?
Use the relationship between subjects—not the number of posts you currently have—to make this choice. A category can start with one post and grow; what matters is whether the subject is conceptually part of a larger section.
| Choose this | When it fits | Archive and navigation effect |
|---|---|---|
| Top-level category | The subject is broad enough to stand on its own, such as Animals or Travel. | It has its own archive and sits directly in the site’s category structure. |
| Child category | The subject is a meaningful subdivision, such as Mammals under Animals. | The child has its own archive. The parent archive includes posts assigned to the child, allowing readers to browse from broad to narrow. |
Example: building a clear hierarchy
Suppose your existing top-level category is Animals. Create Mammals as a child only if readers benefit from seeing mammals as part of the animals section. If you also need Birds and Reptiles, the hierarchy communicates that these are parallel subdivisions. If Field notes describes posts across all three subjects, it is more naturally a tag than another child category.
How assignment works with a parent
A post assigned to a child category can be included in the parent archive even when the parent is not separately selected for that post. WordPress also lets you decide whether to assign the parent directly. Select the parent as well only when the direct assignment has a clear editorial meaning; otherwise, the child relationship already expresses the structure.
Do not create a hierarchy for every variation
A long chain of parents and children can make the category list harder to understand. Use a child when the parent-child relationship explains the subject to a reader. If a term simply describes an attribute that can occur in many sections, keep it as a tag. This keeps the category archive focused on durable sections instead of turning every recurring word into a branch.
Assign the new category to a post
Creating a category does not automatically classify older or unrelated posts. Open the post you want to classify and use the Categories panel in the editor. Select the new category, leave other relevant categories selected, and save or update the post.
The sidebar supports assigning one or more categories to a post. Keep the selections focused on the subjects a reader would reasonably expect to find in that post. If a term is merely a recurring keyword rather than a section of your site, use a tag instead of adding another category branch.
For a new post, choose the category before publishing or saving the draft. For an existing post, click Update after changing the selection. Reopen the post when you need to verify that the category is still selected; the category is not attached to the post until the post changes are saved.

Confirm that the category works
- Edit or create a post and select the new category in the Categories panel.
- Save, publish, or update the post.
- Open the category link or archive from the dashboard or the site’s category navigation.
- Confirm that the assigned post appears in the archive.
The archive is the practical test: it shows whether the category is attached to a post and whether the public template renders it as expected. Public placement, labels, and styling depend on the active theme and site configuration. WordPress’s First steps with WordPress (Block Editor) guide also notes that an empty category may not appear in the site’s default display until a post is assigned to it.
If you cannot find a visible menu item, use the category link generated in the dashboard or open the category archive from a post that displays its category information. A working archive and a visible navigation link are related but not identical: the theme controls where category links are placed.
Why a new category may not appear on the site
The category has no posts
A newly created category can remain absent from the site’s normal category lists when it is empty. Assign at least one post, save the post, and then check the category archive. This behavior is documented in the Block Editor first-steps guide.
The post was not saved after selection
Creating a category in the editor and selecting it are separate actions. After selecting the checkbox or category control, click Publish, Update, or the appropriate save action. Reopen the post to verify that the selection remains.
The theme does not display categories where you expect
The category itself can exist and have an archive even when the active theme does not show category links in a menu, header, post meta area, or widget. Check the archive link directly and review the theme’s configured navigation and post layout before assuming the category failed.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The slug is not the URL you expected
Review the slug on the Categories screen. WordPress may generate a URL-friendly value when the field is left blank, and the final path also depends on the site’s address and permalink settings. A unique slug such as animals commonly appears as a path containing /category/animals/, but do not assume that exact path without checking the link generated by your site.
You created a tag instead of a category
Tags and categories are managed as different taxonomies. A tag will not appear in the Categories panel as a hierarchical category. Return to Posts > Categories and create the intended category there, then assign it from the post editor.
The category name looks duplicated
WordPress requires unique category names, so a conflict usually means an existing category already uses that label. Review the category table rather than creating a second version with a small punctuation or capitalization change. A distinct name makes assignment and archive browsing clearer.
Dashboard workflow versus editor workflow
Both routes create a normal WordPress category. The better choice depends on whether you are doing site-wide organization or solving an immediate editorial need.

A practical category-creation checklist
- Confirm that the subject belongs in a category rather than being only a cross-cutting tag.
- Check the existing category list for a duplicate or near-duplicate name.
- Choose a stable, reader-friendly name.
- Review the generated or manually entered slug and make sure it is unique.
- Choose a parent only when the new subject is a genuine subdivision.
- Add a description if it will help administrators or if the theme displays category descriptions.
- Save the category from Posts > Categories, or create it in the post editor if you are working on a specific post.
- Select the category for the intended post and save or update that post.
- Open the category archive and confirm that the post appears.
- Check how the active theme displays the category link, archive title, and description rather than assuming every theme uses the same layout.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add a new category in WordPress?
Go to Posts > Categories, enter a unique name, optionally set the slug, parent, and description, then click Add New Category. You can also use Add New Category in the Block Editor’s Categories panel while editing a post.
How do I create a category for one post?
Open the post in the Block Editor, expand the settings sidebar’s Categories panel, choose Add New Category, enter the name, select a parent if needed, and add it. Make sure the new category is selected, then save, publish, or update the post.
How do I add a subcategory in WordPress?
Create the category from Posts > Categories and choose an existing category in the Parent field. In the Block Editor, choose the parent in the new-category control. The result is a child category with its own archive under the broader subject.
Do I have to complete every category field?
No. The name is the essential field. A slug, parent, and description are optional choices, although a unique slug and an appropriate parent are important when you need a specific URL or hierarchy.
Will a category description appear publicly?
Not necessarily. The active theme determines whether descriptions are shown on category archives or elsewhere. Even when visitors cannot see it, the description can help administrators understand what belongs in the category.
Why is my new category not showing on my site?
First assign at least one post and save that post. An empty category may not appear in the site’s default category display. If the archive still is not visible in a menu or post layout, check the theme’s configuration and open the category link directly.
Should I use a category or a tag?
Use a category for a broad, durable grouping that may have a parent and an archive. Use a tag for a non-hierarchical keyword that can cross several categories without becoming part of the site’s section structure.
Recommended Free Tools
Does assigning a child category also place the post in the parent archive?
Yes. A parent archive includes posts assigned to its child categories, even when the parent is not separately selected. Select the parent directly only when that additional assignment has a clear editorial purpose.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Can I create the category before writing any post?
Yes. The Posts > Categories screen is designed for site-wide setup, so you can create the category, review its slug and parent, and assign it later. An empty category may not be visible in the site’s normal display until a post uses it.
Key points to remember
The shortest reliable workflow is: create a unique category under Posts > Categories, set its slug and parent only when needed, save it, assign it to a post, and check the resulting archive. Categories provide broad, optionally hierarchical sections; tags provide non-hierarchical keywords. If the category is not visible immediately, check whether it has an assigned post and whether the theme exposes category links in the place you are viewing.
