To add a Steam demo, open the full game’s Steam store page and select the demo action shown there. Steam may label it Add to Library or Download Demo, depending on how the publisher configured the page. To remove an installed demo, open Library, right-click the demo, choose Manage, and select Uninstall.
Uninstalling removes the installed content from your computer; it is not the same as a developer deactivating the demo. Steam’s official materials do not establish one universal rule for whether every uninstalled demo remains visible in your Library or can always be reinstalled from the same location, so treat availability after removal as title-specific.
What a Steam demo is
A Steam demo is a separate Steam application associated with a full game. Valve describes demos as a way to “try before you buy,” and a publisher can present that separate application on the full game’s store page. The relationship between the demo and the commercial release does not mean they are the same install or the same application.

The publisher controls whether the demo is offered on the store page and which action Steam displays. Valve’s developer documentation explains the store presentation and demo-app relationship in Steamworks’ Demos documentation. As a result, two games can expose slightly different buttons while using the same basic Library workflow.

How the two store-page actions differ

The exact wording and placement can vary because the publisher decides how the demo is surfaced on the full game’s page. If neither action appears, the demo may not currently be offered for that title, region, account state, or store configuration; the official materials do not provide a universal explanation for every missing button.
How to add a Steam demo to your Library
- Open the full game’s Steam store page. Search for the commercial release in Steam and open its store listing. The demo action is normally presented from that page rather than from a separate generic “demo library” screen.
- Find the demo control. Look near the game’s purchase and other edition controls for a button labeled Add to Library or Download Demo. Read the wording carefully; you are looking for the demo associated with that title, not the purchase button for the full game.
- Select the action Steam shows. If the button says Add to Library, activate it and wait for Steam to confirm the addition. If it says Download Demo, select it and continue through Steam’s install prompts.
- Open Library and search for the demo. Use Steam’s Library search or browse the game’s entries. The demo may have its own Library entry even though it is associated with the full game.
- Install when needed. Adding an entry and installing its files are separate practical steps. If the demo is listed but not installed, select the entry and use Steam’s install control. The available labels can depend on the title’s current configuration.
Do not use the non-Steam shortcut workflow
Steam Support’s Add Non-Steam Games to a Library article describes creating a shortcut for a game that is already installed on your computer outside Steam. That is not the method for acquiring a Steam demo. A Steam demo must be offered through the title’s Steam store page; adding an unrelated executable as a non-Steam shortcut does not create the demo’s Steam application or entitlement.
If the store page has no demo button
- Confirm that you opened the intended full-game page rather than a similarly named edition or soundtrack.
- Check whether the page currently lists a demo section at all. A publisher can change or remove the store presentation.
- Do not assume that a missing button is a client fault. The official Steamworks documentation makes demo availability a part of the developer’s store configuration.
- If you previously had the demo, check Library filters and hidden games before concluding that the entry is gone.

- Open Steam’s Library. Switch from the store to the Library view that contains your installed and added titles.
- Locate the demo entry. Search for the demo’s title. Because the demo is a separate application, it may appear as its own entry rather than as a removable component inside the full game.
- Open the context menu. Right-click the demo entry.
- Choose Manage. In the context menu, select Manage.
- Select Uninstall. Choose Uninstall and confirm any prompt Steam displays.
- Wait for Steam to finish. Let the client complete the removal before closing it or manually deleting folders.
This menu path is documented in Steam Support’s instructions for removing installed Steam game content: Installing a game from a disc. Although that support page’s title refers to disc installation, its Steam Library procedure supplies the relevant Manage > Uninstall path for installed content.
What the uninstall operation changes
Uninstalling is the local removal step: Steam removes the installed demo content from the computer. It does not, on the evidence available from Valve’s documentation, amount to a developer-side change to the demo’s Steam availability.
Do not describe the action as “deactivating” the demo. In Valve’s terminology, deactivate refers to a developer action that blocks downloads and launches. A player selecting Manage > Uninstall is removing the local installation instead.

Uninstalling versus developer deactivation
These actions involve different people, different controls, and different outcomes.

Valve’s explanation of demo deactivation and existing Library entries appears in the Steamworks Demos documentation. It is therefore unsafe to promise that uninstalling always removes the Library listing, or that a deactivated demo can always be downloaded again.
What happens to the demo after you uninstall it?
The local files are removed
The purpose of the Uninstall command is to remove the installed content managed by Steam. This can free the disk space used by the demo. The operation is local to your Steam installation; it is not a request to delete the publisher’s store page or to disable the demo for other players.

The Library listing may require a separate check
Steam’s official materials supplied for this workflow do not define a single post-uninstall rule that applies to every demo. Some titles may continue to appear as Library entries, while other presentation or licensing behavior can differ. Do not treat the disappearance or continued presence of one demo as proof of how every other demo behaves.
Reinstallation is not guaranteed from one fixed location
If you want to play the demo again, first search your Library. If it is listed and Steam offers an install control, use that control. You can also revisit the full game’s store page and look for the current demo action. If the action is absent, the publisher may no longer be offering the demo in that presentation, or the demo may have been deactivated. The cited official sources do not guarantee that every uninstalled demo will remain reinstallable from the same page.

A missing entry can be a visibility problem rather than a deleted entitlement. Steam Support specifically recommends checking Library filters and the hidden-games view.

- Review Library filters. Clear filters that limit the view to installed games, favorites, genres, or other categories. An uninstalled demo may not appear when the view is restricted to currently installed content.
- Open the hidden-games view. In Steam, select View > Hidden Games.
- Restore the entry if it is hidden. Right-click the demo, choose Manage, then select Remove from Hidden.
- Return to the normal Library view. Search for the demo again after removing the hidden status.
- Check the store page. If the demo is not in Hidden Games, revisit the full game’s store page and look for the current demo action.

Troubleshooting by symptom
“I clicked Add to Library, but I cannot find the demo”
- Search the Library by the demo’s title, not only by the full game’s title.
- Clear restrictive filters and inspect View > Hidden Games.
- If the entry is hidden, use Manage > Remove from Hidden.
- Return to the store page and verify whether the button changed to an installation-related action.
“The demo appears, but Uninstall is unavailable”
- Confirm that you selected the demo entry rather than the full game’s entry.
- Check whether the demo is actually installed. A Library listing without local files may show an install command instead of an uninstall command.
- Open the right-click menu again and look specifically under Manage; the uninstall command is not a store-page control.
“I uninstalled it and now it is gone”
That result does not by itself prove that the demo license was permanently removed. Check filters, Hidden Games, and the full game’s store page. Because Valve’s official materials do not promise one universal visibility rule after uninstalling, there is no single supported step that can restore every absent demo.
“The demo is listed but will not download or launch”
The demo may have been deactivated by its developer. Valve states that a deactivated demo cannot be downloaded or launched, although existing Library entries may still be visible. In that case, repeatedly uninstalling and reinstalling cannot override the developer’s availability setting.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying the full game by mistake: Select the demo-specific action, not the full-game purchase control.
- Confusing adding with installing: An Add to Library action can create the Library entry without proving that the demo files are installed.
- Using Add Non-Steam Games: That workflow creates a shortcut to software already on the computer; it does not acquire a Steam demo.
- Calling uninstall “deactivation”: Uninstall is a player-side local removal. Deactivation is a developer-side restriction on downloading and launching.
- Assuming every demo follows the same post-uninstall rule: Store presentation and availability are title-specific, and the official documentation does not provide a universal reinstallation promise.
- Deleting folders manually first: Use Steam’s Library uninstall command so the client can manage the installed content rather than leaving the Library state out of sync.

Bottom line
Add the demo from the full game’s Steam store page using whichever demo button is displayed. Remove an installed copy from Library with Manage > Uninstall. The first action acquires or exposes the demo, the second removes local files, and neither should be confused with a developer deactivating the demo. If the entry is missing, check filters and Hidden Games before assuming it has been permanently removed; if the demo has been deactivated, Steam may leave an existing Library entry visible while blocking downloads and launches.
