To use a song as a Samsung Galaxy ringtone, first save it as a local audio file on your phone. A track available only inside a streaming app—even one downloaded there for offline listening—cannot be selected directly. Then open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone, add the file, and tap Done. Samsung’s UK support guide, updated 5 June 2026, gives these steps; menu labels can differ by model and software version.
Get a song file onto your Galaxy phone
Choose an audio file you have the right to download and use, and save it directly on the phone. Samsung says you can download music to the device or load it using Samsung Music or a Windows PC. The song must be an ordinary local file that the ringtone picker can access—not just a track inside a streaming service. Samsung explicitly says streaming-service tracks cannot be set as ringtones.
An app’s offline-listening feature does not necessarily give you a separate music file that other phone features can use. If you want to use a purchased or downloaded recording, check the provider’s current terms for what that file permits; Samsung’s guide does not recommend a particular store or establish the rights attached to a specific recording.

Samsung UK lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC as supported sound formats for this process. Its guidance says an M4A file must be converted to one of those formats. If a file in a listed format still does not appear or play, details may vary by Galaxy model and region; the support guide does not specify a converter.

Set the song as your general ringtone
- Open Settings and tap Sounds and vibration.
- Tap Ringtone. If prompted, choose SIM 1 or SIM 2. A single-SIM phone may show only SIM 1.
- Tap the + icon to add a sound.
- Select your local music file. If it is not listed under Tracks, check Folders or use search in the picker.
- Tap Done.
Samsung’s older New Zealand instructions use the label “Sound and vibration” and note that screens and menus may vary with the phone model and software. If the labels on your Galaxy differ, look for the sound settings and ringtone option rather than assuming the same wording appears on every device.
Give a contact a different ringtone
- Open the Phone app and tap the contact you want to edit.
- Open the contact’s information or edit view, then tap View more and Ringtone.
- Choose a built-in tone, or tap + to select a local music file.
- Tap Done, go back to the contact, and tap Save.
Samsung notes that this option can depend on the device and operating system. If you do not see the ringtone control, check whether the contact is saved on the phone; contacts stored elsewhere may not expose the option.

Choose a segment of the song, if available
Some Galaxy ringtone pickers include a Play selected highlights only switch. When enabled, the phone plays a selected part of the song; when disabled, it starts from the beginning. Samsung New Zealand describes this control but cautions that menus vary by model and software, so it may not appear on your phone.

Fix a song that is missing from the ringtone list
- The file is absent from Tracks: switch to Folders or search in the ringtone picker.
- The song exists only in a streaming app: obtain a separate local audio file from a source that allows the intended use. Samsung says streaming-service tracks cannot be selected directly.
- The file is M4A: convert it to MP3, WMA, AAC, or FLAC, which Samsung UK lists as supported.
- The menu wording or highlight control is different: Samsung notes that menus and controls can vary by model and software version.
- A contact-specific ringtone option is missing: check whether the contact is saved on the phone; availability also depends on the device and operating system.
Samsung’s New Zealand support page, last updated 30 August 2021, states that physical song files must be downloaded to the device to set one as a ringtone: Samsung NZ ringtone instructions.
