To add a separate person to a Googlebook, open Settings > System > Users > Add user, enter the new user’s credentials, then switch profiles from the lock screen. Each device user gets separate files, settings, wallpaper, password and PIN. This is different from adding another Google Account inside your existing user.
Add a separate device user
Use a device user when two people need independent spaces on one Googlebook. The profile separation applies to the device, not just to one app: files, personal settings and sign-in credentials belong to the selected user.
- Sign in to the Googlebook with the current administrator account.
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Users.
- Select Add user.
- Enter the second person’s Google credentials and complete the on-screen setup.
- When setup finishes, sign out. At the lock screen, select the required profile and authenticate with that user’s password or PIN.
Google describes the feature as allowing multiple users on one Googlebook and letting them switch between users. The first user created on the device is normally the device administrator, so that account can add or remove users.
What a separate user profile isolates
Every user has an individual sign-in space. Personal files, wallpaper, password, PIN and other settings are kept with that profile rather than mixed into another user’s space. This makes a separate user the stronger choice when the Googlebook is shared by family members, colleagues or students who should not work inside one another’s device sessions.

User versus Google Account
A user is a device-level space. A Google Account is a set of credentials used by applications and websites. Adding an account inside your existing user can give an app access to another mailbox or service, but it does not create a second desktop, separate local files area or independent device settings.
Separate user or additional account?
Choose based on the level of separation you need:
| Need | Separate device user | Additional account inside the current user |
|---|---|---|
| Files and settings | Separate device space with its own files and personal settings | Uses the current user’s device space |
| Switching | Sign out, choose a profile at the lock screen, and authenticate | Switch accounts within the relevant app or website |
| Administrator control | Managed by the device administrator | Does not create another device administrator or user |
| Work or school policies | Can keep the managed identity in its own device session, subject to organization restrictions | Policies and data remain inside the current user’s session |
| Chrome separation | Does not currently create multiple Chrome browser profiles on Googlebook OS | Also does not provide device-level separation |
If you only need occasional app-level access, adding an account is quicker. If another person needs a distinct workspace or should not see your local files and settings, create a separate device user.

Add a work or school identity
Google documents two approaches for an employer or school account:
Recommended Free Tools
Option 1: Create a separate device user
Follow Settings > System > Users > Add user. This gives the work or school identity its own device session and provides stronger separation from a personal user. The organization may still restrict sign-in, managed features or use of a personal Googlebook.

Option 2: Add the account to the current user
From the existing profile, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts > Add account, then follow the sign-in prompts. This is appropriate when the person needs access to work or school services but does not need a separate device workspace.
Switch between users
- Sign out of the active user.
- Wait for the lock screen to appear.
- Select the profile you want to use.
- Enter that user’s password or PIN.
Switching this way loads the selected user’s own settings and files. It does not merge data between profiles.

Important Chrome limitation
A second Googlebook user should not be described as a second Chrome browser profile. Current reporting indicates that Googlebook OS does not yet support multiple browser profiles in Chrome. Google has indicated that support is planned for a future update, but no release date has been provided. If the requirement is specifically separate Chrome browser profiles, creating another device user does not satisfy it today.

Administrator rules and removal problems
Removing the administrator
The first device user is normally the administrator. Before removing that account, grant administrator status to another user. Otherwise, the device may have no account with permission to manage users.
Removing the only user
If the Googlebook has only one user and that user must be removed, Google’s documented remedy is a factory reset. A reset erases the device’s local data and returns it to its setup state, so back up files and confirm that the account can be recovered before proceeding.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting checklist
- Add user is unavailable: Sign in with the device administrator; a standard user may not have permission to manage accounts.
- The new profile cannot sign in: Check the entered credentials and the Googlebook’s internet connection, then retry from the user setup screen.
- Work sign-in is blocked: The organization may prohibit managed sign-in or impose policies on personal devices. Contact the organization’s administrator.
- Files appear missing after switching: Confirm that you selected the correct profile at the lock screen. Device-user files are intentionally separated.
- You expected a separate Chrome profile: Googlebook OS currently lacks Chrome multi-profile support; use the device-user separation only for files and settings, not as a promise of independent Chrome profiles.
