To add a second SSD for Steam games, install a compatible M.2 NVMe or 2.5-inch SATA drive, initialize and format it in Windows Disk Management, then add a library folder on that drive in Steam. An empty-looking M.2 socket is not proof that every SSD will work: check the computer’s service manual for the supported interface, key, length, clearance and mounting hardware first.
The procedure below covers internal drives on a Windows PC, including hardware checks, installation, GPT and NTFS setup, Steam’s storage manager, moving existing games and the fixes for drives that Windows or Steam cannot see.
Choose the right kind of second SSD
Your computer must have both physical room and an interface that supports the drive you buy. A second SSD does not have to match the brand or capacity of the boot drive, but it must match the slot, protocol and mounting arrangement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Drive type | Best when | Check before buying | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| M.2 NVMe SSD | The motherboard or laptop has a free compatible M.2 slot | M.2 keying, supported PCIe generation, module length such as 2230, 2242 or 2280, heatsink clearance and a retaining screw | Compact and cable-free, but compatibility is specific to the computer model |
| 2.5-inch SATA SSD | There is a spare 2.5-inch bay and an available SATA connection | Bay or bracket, SATA data port and cable, power lead from the power supply, and firmware detection | Works with many older desktops, but needs a bay and two cables |
| External USB SSD | No internal slot is available or the library must be portable | USB port speed, enclosure compatibility, cable quality and whether the connection remains mounted | Simple to add, but games depend on a stable removable-drive connection |
Read the manual before opening the computer
Use the motherboard, desktop or laptop service manual to identify the free slot or bay. Confirm whether the M.2 position accepts NVMe rather than SATA M.2, which module lengths fit, whether a motherboard heatsink covers the position, and whether installing a drive disables a particular SATA port. Laptop manuals may also specify a caddy, bracket or thermal pad.

For a SATA installation, verify that the power supply has a spare SATA power connector and that the motherboard has an unused SATA data port. A data cable may not be included with the SSD. For an M.2 installation, confirm that the standoff is in the correct position for the drive length and that the small retaining screw is present. Do not assume a screw from another location has the correct thread.
Plan the library location
Choose a drive letter that is unlikely to change, such as D: or E:, and create a dedicated folder such as D:SteamLibrary. A stable letter matters because Steam records the library path; changing it later can make installed games appear missing until the library is repaired or added again.
Capacity should match the size of the games you actually intend to keep installed, plus free space for updates and temporary files. No universal capacity or loading-time improvement is established by the available technical guidance, so select capacity from your own library rather than expecting a guaranteed FPS or percentage gain.

Install the SSD safely
Back up important files before changing hardware. Shut Windows down completely, switch off the desktop power supply if it has a switch, unplug the power cable and disconnect peripherals. Follow the manufacturer’s service instructions for the exact panel, battery-disconnect procedure and anti-static precautions. Never work inside a powered computer.
Installing an M.2 NVMe drive
- Locate the compatible M.2 socket and its standoff. Check the socket key and the label in the manual rather than relying only on the connector’s appearance.
- Hold the SSD by its edges. Avoid touching the gold contacts or the components on the board.
- Insert the connector end at the angle shown by the manufacturer, usually around 20 to 30 degrees, until it is fully seated.
- Press the free end down onto the standoff and install the specified retaining screw. A Framework service guide illustrates a 2 mm T5 Torx screw, but that size is an example for that system, not a universal M.2 standard.
- Reinstall any motherboard cover or heatsink exactly as instructed. Make sure a thermal pad contacts the drive and that the cover does not bend the module.
The drive should lie flat and must not be left loose. A drive that can move can lose contact or be damaged when the computer is transported.

Installing a 2.5-inch SATA SSD
- Fit the SSD into the designated bay, tray or bracket using the supplied screws or the fasteners specified by the computer maker.
- Connect one end of a SATA data cable to the SSD and the other to an open motherboard SATA port.
- Connect a SATA power plug from the power supply. The data cable alone cannot power the drive.
- Route and secure cables so they cannot touch fans or prevent the case panel from closing.
Close the case, reconnect power and peripherals, and then start the computer. If the system fails to boot, power it off and recheck seating and cables before changing firmware settings.
Make the new SSD usable in Windows
Windows does not necessarily show a newly installed disk in File Explorer immediately. Microsoft describes Disk Management as the built-in tool for managing disks and volumes; a new disk commonly needs to be brought online, initialized, partitioned and assigned a drive letter first.
Open Disk Management
- Sign in to Windows and open Start.
- Search for Create and format hard disk partitions, then open the matching Disk Management result.
- In the lower pane, identify the new disk by its capacity and status. Do not select the disk containing Windows or files you need.
Disk numbers can change between computers, so identify the target by size, connection and the fact that it was just installed. If the new disk is marked Offline, right-click its disk label and choose Online. If Windows asks to initialize it, continue only after confirming that it is the blank new drive.
Initialize with GPT on a modern UEFI PC
Right-click the disk label, choose Initialize Disk, and select GPT (GUID Partition Table) for a modern UEFI system. GPT is the normal choice for current Windows PCs and avoids the older MBR limitations. A legacy computer may have different firmware requirements; use its manual before choosing a partition style.
Initialization writes partition information. If the disk contains data from another computer, stop and recover or copy that data first; do not initialize it merely to make it appear in Explorer.

Create an NTFS volume and assign a letter
- In the unallocated area of the new disk, right-click and choose New Simple Volume.
- Accept the maximum size unless you deliberately need multiple volumes.
- Assign the planned drive letter, for example
D:. Avoid a letter used by a card reader or a drive that is sometimes disconnected. - Choose NTFS as the file system and leave the default allocation-unit size unless a specific application requires another value.
- Give the volume a clear label such as
Steam Games. - Use Quick Format only when the disk is new or you have already secured any existing data. Quick format creates the file table; it is not a secure erase and must not be used to destroy files that you still need.
When the operation finishes, the volume should show as healthy in Disk Management and appear in File Explorer under its assigned letter. Open the drive and create the Steam library folder, or let Steam create it later.

Check permissions and write access
Sign in with the Windows account that will run Steam and test that you can create and delete a temporary file in the planned library folder. A library in a protected system location can cause Steam to report that it is not writable. A dedicated folder at the root of the new data volume, such as D:SteamLibrary, is usually easier to manage than a protected Windows folder.
Add the SSD as a Steam library
Steam can use more than one library. The exact wording can vary slightly by client version, but the storage screen is the place to add a second location.
- Open the Steam desktop client and sign in.
- Open Steam in the upper-left menu and choose Settings.
- Open Storage. This screen lists existing libraries and the drives Steam can use.
- Choose the option to add a drive or library location, select the new drive letter, and create or select a folder such as
D:SteamLibrary. - Confirm the location. It should now appear in Steam’s storage list with available space.
During a game installation, select the new library from the location menu before starting the download. Bethesda’s Steam support instructions describe the same result: once the location is added, it can be chosen whenever a game is installed.
Keep the SSD connected, mounted and assigned the same letter whenever you launch games from it. If it is an external USB drive, connect it directly to a reliable port, avoid an intermittently powered hub, and wait for Windows to finish mounting it before opening Steam.

Make the new library the default for future games
In Steam’s Storage settings, select the new library and use the context menu or button that sets it as the default location, if your client version exposes that control. You can still choose another library for an individual installation. Setting a default changes where new games are offered; it does not move games already installed elsewhere.
Move games that are already installed
Use Steam’s built-in move command instead of dragging game folders in File Explorer. Manual moves can leave Steam’s metadata pointing to the old path.
- Open Steam’s library and locate the installed game.
- Open the game’s properties and select the installed-files or storage-related section.
- Choose Move install folder or the equivalent move command.
- Select the library on the new SSD and confirm the move.
- Wait for Steam to complete the transfer, then start the game once to verify that it launches.
Game saves may be stored separately from the installation. Leave Steam Cloud enabled when the game supports it, and keep an independent backup of important saves. Do not format or remove the old SSD until every moved game has been checked and any save files have been confirmed.

The drive is absent from Disk Management
- Shut the computer down and unplug it. Reseat an M.2 module so the connector is fully inserted and the retaining screw holds it flat.
- For SATA, check both the data cable at the motherboard and SSD and the separate power connector. Try a different known-good SATA data cable or port if the manual permits.
- Confirm that the slot supports the SSD’s protocol and length. Some M.2 sockets accept only SATA, only NVMe, or only certain module sizes.
- Check whether installing an M.2 drive disables one or more SATA ports. The motherboard manual lists these lane-sharing rules.
- Enter the system’s BIOS or UEFI storage page and see whether the drive is detected there. Menus and labels differ by manufacturer, so use the computer’s manual rather than copying a setting from another model.
If firmware does not detect the drive after reseating and cable checks, Windows cannot use it yet. A faulty drive, incompatible slot or missing power connection is more likely than a Steam setting.

Return to Disk Management. An Offline disk must be brought online. A disk marked Not initialized needs GPT initialization on a modern UEFI PC, followed by a New Simple Volume. A volume without a drive letter will not appear in Explorer; assign the planned letter. If the space is unallocated, create and format the volume. Confirm that the status becomes healthy before opening Steam.

Steam does not list the new drive
- Verify in File Explorer that Windows can open the drive and create a file in the library folder.
- Check Disk Management for an online disk, a healthy volume and the expected drive letter.
- Close Steam completely, including its notification-area process, then start it again. Steam may not refresh storage locations while it is running.
- In Steam’s Settings > Storage, add the existing library folder rather than creating a second folder inside it.
- For an external drive, reconnect it directly, wait for Windows to mount it, and avoid changing USB ports if the letter is reassigned.
- Check firmware detection if Windows intermittently loses the disk. BIOS and UEFI storage menus vary by system.
Steam says the library is not writable
Choose a folder owned by your Windows user and test write access outside Steam. Avoid a protected root such as a Windows system directory. Check that the drive is not read-only, that the volume is healthy, and that the account running Steam has permission to create files. Security software can also block a newly created folder; review its notification rather than disabling protection broadly.
Games show as uninstalled after a drive-letter change
Steam identifies a library by its path. If Windows assigns a different letter after reconnecting a drive, restore the original letter in Disk Management when possible, then restart Steam. Alternatively, add the library’s current folder in Settings > Storage and let Steam discover the existing installations. Do not start a fresh download until Steam has checked the existing files.
The computer boots but performance or stability is inconsistent
Check that the M.2 heatsink is installed correctly and that the module is not bent, and confirm that SATA cables are firmly latched. Keep firmware and chipset drivers current according to the computer or motherboard maker’s guidance. A second SSD provides storage capacity; the available guidance does not establish a guaranteed loading-time, FPS or percentage improvement, so diagnose thermal, cable and software faults rather than assuming a benchmark result.
Using the drive with another operating system
The NTFS workflow above is specifically for a Windows-only Steam library. Sharing a disk between Windows and SteamOS or another Linux distribution is a separate, platform-specific setup. File-system support, permissions, mount behavior and compatibility with individual games can differ, so verify the current guidance for the target operating system before partitioning or formatting. Do not treat NTFS as a universal recommendation for every Steam installation.
