If you mean the picture that appears beside your name in a Teams chat, you change your Teams profile picture. It is not added from the chat compose box. In a work or school account, the photo is generally tied to your Microsoft 365 account, so it can also appear in other Microsoft 365 apps.
Choose the instructions for your Teams edition and device below. The menus differ between work or school Teams, Teams Free, iPhone/iPad, and Android.
Add or change your picture in Teams desktop
These steps apply to the standard Teams desktop app for a work, school, or standard Teams account.
- Open Teams and select your current profile picture in the top-right corner. If you have not set a photo, select your initials.
- When the account manager opens, select your profile picture a second time.
- Select Upload.
- Choose the image from your computer and follow the on-screen crop or confirmation prompts.
- Select Save.
To delete the existing picture, follow the same path and select Remove instead of Upload, then save if Teams asks you to confirm.

Do not look in Settings > Profile first
Some older guides send you to Settings > Profile. That is not Microsoft’s current primary path for the standard desktop Teams app. Start by selecting your profile picture, then select it again.
Change your picture on an iPhone or iPad
- Tap your current picture or initials at the top left.
- Tap your name to open your profile.
- Tap Update photo.
- Take a new photo or choose one from your photo library.
- Complete the crop or confirmation step. Teams displays a notification when the update succeeds.
Change your picture on Android
- Tap More.
- Tap your picture or initials.
- Tap Edit image.
- Take a photo or select one from your device.
- Confirm the crop and save the change.
Teams Free instructions
Teams Free has different labels and mobile menus from the standard work or school client.
Teams Free on desktop
- Select your profile picture near the top of Teams.
- Select the picture again.
- Select Upload picture and choose an image.
- Save the change.
To delete it, choose Remove picture. Teams Free also provides an alternate route through People > More options, where you can update your name and photo.

Teams Free on mobile
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Profile.
- Tap Edit image.
- Choose an option such as Open photo library or Camera. On iPhone, Take photo may also be available.
- Confirm the image. You can use View photo to inspect it or Remove photo to delete it.
If Teams does not show an Upload option
For a work or school account, your organization may have disabled profile-picture changes. Try Microsoft’s account portal instead:
- Go to myaccount.microsoft.com and sign in with your work or school account.
- Select the Edit icon on your current profile photo.
- Upload or replace the image.
- Select Save.
If the edit control is missing there too, contact your organization’s IT or HR department. The restriction is usually an account policy rather than a Teams installation problem.
Another work or school route is available in a Microsoft 365 desktop app: open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, select File > Account, and select Change photo. This opens your organization’s profile page, where you can update the account picture.

Choose an image that works well in Teams
- Use a square image when possible. It reduces unwanted cropping in the circular profile display.
- For a portrait or landscape image, leave space around the subject or add borders so the entire image can survive the crop.
- Use a normal static image format. Microsoft’s current account guidance says HEIC and animated GIF files are not supported.
- If an image is rejected, convert it to a standard static format such as JPEG or PNG and try again.
Why the old picture still appears in a chat
A successful upload does not necessarily refresh every Teams screen immediately. The new picture can take time to appear in chats, channels, meeting rosters, and other Microsoft 365 services. Microsoft says account-picture changes can take up to 24 hours to appear everywhere.

- Close and reopen Teams.
- Sign out and sign back in.
- Check your profile in another Teams client or browser to see whether the change has propagated.
- Wait for Microsoft 365 synchronization to complete.
- If only the desktop client is stale, clear the Teams cache; Microsoft notes that this may make the picture update faster.
Adding a photo as a chat message instead
If you meant sending a picture inside a conversation rather than changing the photo beside your name, use the chat composer:
- Open the one-to-one or group chat.
- Select the attachment or Actions and apps button beside the compose box. The exact icon can vary by Teams version.
- Choose the option to attach or upload a file, then select the picture.
- Add a message if needed and select Send.
This sends an image to that conversation only. It does not change your Teams profile picture.

FAQ
Can I add a profile picture directly from a Teams chat?
No. Open your account menu by selecting your profile picture, then use the profile-picture editing controls. A photo sent through the chat attachment control is only a chat message and does not become your profile picture.
Why can’t I change my Teams profile picture?
On a work or school account, your organization may have disabled profile-picture changes. Try myaccount.microsoft.com. If the Edit control is unavailable there, ask your IT or HR department whether policy allows the change.
What file types can I use for a Teams profile picture?
Use a supported static image such as JPEG or PNG. Microsoft’s current account guidance says HEIC and animated GIF files are not supported.

Why does my new Teams picture look cropped?
Profile photos are displayed in a constrained, commonly circular shape. Use a square source image or add borders around a portrait or landscape image to keep the subject visible.
How long does it take for a Teams profile picture to update?
The change may appear in some places before others. Microsoft says it can take up to 24 hours to appear across services. Restarting Teams, signing in again, or clearing the Teams cache may help the desktop client refresh.
Is my Teams profile picture separate from my Microsoft 365 picture?
For work or school accounts, the picture is associated with the Microsoft work or school account and can appear in other Microsoft 365 apps and devices using that account. It is not necessarily a Teams-only image.
