To password-protect a Hytale server, stop it, open the server’s config.json file, set the Password value, save the file, and start the server again. Hytale reads this setting when the server launches, so players will not be asked for the new password until after the restart.
The setting that controls access
Hytale server access is controlled by the Password entry in the server’s config.json file. A non-empty value makes the server require that value from connecting players. The official example uses this format:

"Password": "MONPASSWORD"Replace MONPASSWORD with the password you want to distribute to your players. Keep the value inside the quotation marks and preserve the JSON punctuation. A password change is not live while the server is running; the configuration is read at startup, so the server must be restarted after the file is saved.
Before you edit the file
Prepare these items before making the change:
- Access to the machine or hosting panel that runs the Hytale server.
- Permission to stop and start the server.
- An editor that can modify plain text without adding formatting.
- The location of the server’s root directory, where
config.jsonis stored. - A password you can share privately with the people who should join.
Stop the server before editing. Changing a live configuration file can leave the running process using the old value, and a later save by the server could overwrite your edit. Stopping first also gives you a clear point at which to make a backup and validate the file.

Self-hosted server: add the password in config.json
- Stop Hytale. Use the normal stop control for the process or service that runs your server. Wait until it has completely shut down.
- Open the server root directory. Locate
config.json. Do not rely on a line number from a guide because the surrounding configuration can differ; search the file for the key namedPassword. - Make a backup. Copy the existing file to a separate location before changing it. A backup lets you restore the previous configuration if the server does not start after the edit.
- Find the Password key. The key is written with a capital
P:"Password". Edit its value rather than creating a second entry with the same name. - Enter your value. Replace the existing value between the quotation marks. For example, change the value to
"Password": "MONPASSWORD", substituting your own password for the example text. - Save the file as JSON. Keep the double quotation marks, colon, commas, and braces intact. Do not save it as a rich-text document or change the filename extension.
- Start the server again. The new password is applied when the server reads the configuration during startup.
Editing an existing entry
If config.json already contains a Password line, change only the text inside its value. For example:
"Password": "old-value"becomes:
"Password": "new-value"Do not add an extra comma after the final property in an object, and do not replace straight double quotes with typographic “smart” quotes. JSON is strict about its punctuation. A malformed comma, quote, brace, or bracket can prevent the server from starting.

Adding the key when it is not visible
Some configurations may not show the setting where a guide’s screenshot places it. Search for Password instead of counting lines. If the key is genuinely absent, use the exact property spelling and value format shown by the official example, placing it within the main JSON object and observing the comma rules around neighboring properties. Make a backup first so you can undo the change if the server rejects the file.
Panel-hosted server: use the panel or its file manager
Hosting control panels expose the same setting in different ways. One panel may provide a dedicated configuration form, while another may require direct editing through a file manager. The labels and menu locations are host-specific, so do not assume that a button shown in one provider’s instructions exists in another panel.

Edit the Password key as ordinary JSON |
- Stop the server from the panel.
- Open the panel’s configuration area. If it has a Server Password field, enter the desired value there and save.
- If no dedicated field exists, open the file manager, locate the server root, and edit
config.json. - Start or restart the server from the panel.
If a panel writes configuration files automatically, use its save button rather than editing a generated file while the panel is simultaneously changing it. If you cannot find a password control, use the panel’s file manager and search for config.json; the exact tab name is not universal.
Confirm that the password is active
After the restart completes, test the server from a client that is not already connected. The documented player flow is a password prompt before the connection finishes. Enter the configured value exactly. A wrong value should prevent the player from joining; this behavior is described in the available guidance but has limited independent documentation.

- Start the server and wait for it to finish its normal startup process.
- Connect with the correct password from a test account or a second client.
- Disconnect and attempt another connection with an intentionally incorrect value.
- Confirm that the incorrect attempt is refused before the player joins.
- Record the successful password in your private administration notes, not in a public announcement.
If an already connected player remains online after you change the password, that does not by itself show that the new setting failed. The setting is evaluated as players connect; have the test client disconnect and reconnect so you are testing a new connection.
Change the password later
To rotate the password, repeat the same procedure: stop the server, edit the value in config.json or the panel’s password field, save, and restart. Give the replacement password only to the people who should retain access. Keep a short record of when you changed it so you can distinguish an old password from a typing mistake when someone reports a failed login.

Changing the value does not require rebuilding the world or replacing the server installation. It changes the access setting in the server configuration. The restart is still required because the configuration is loaded when the process launches.
Remove the password and make the server public
To return the server to an unrestricted state, set the value to an empty string:

The available documentation describes an empty value as making the server public again. Treat this as a configuration change, not as a command entered into the game: the documented method is to edit the setting and relaunch the server.
Troubleshooting
The server will not start after the edit
The most common documented risk is invalid JSON. Reopen the backup and compare it with the edited file. Check for missing commas between properties, an extra comma before a closing brace, unmatched braces, or quotation marks that do not come in pairs. Confirm that the password value is enclosed in ordinary double quotes and that the file is still named config.json.

If restoring the backup lets the server start, make the password change again with a smaller edit: alter only the characters between the existing quotation marks. Do not reformat unrelated settings while diagnosing the problem.
The server starts, but players are not prompted
First confirm that the edit was made in the active server’s root directory rather than in a download, backup, or another installation. Then verify that the key is spelled exactly Password and that the server was restarted after saving. On a hosting panel, check whether the panel regenerated config.json from a separate settings form; if so, make the change through the panel’s own configuration control.
The password is rejected even though it looks correct
Compare the value character by character, including capitalization, spaces, punctuation, and any characters at the beginning or end. Copying a password from formatted text can introduce an invisible trailing space or a different quotation mark. Re-enter the value manually in the client and, if necessary, set a temporary simple test value to determine whether the problem is the password itself or the configuration location.
The panel does not have a Server Password field
Panel interfaces differ. Use the Files or File Manager section to locate the server root and edit config.json directly, provided the panel allows it. If the panel hides server files, consult that host’s documentation or support channel for the correct configuration location; do not assume that a similarly named file elsewhere controls the running instance.

A player still cannot join after receiving the new password
Verify that the player is connecting to the intended server and that the server completed its restart. Ask the player to type the password again rather than relying on an old saved value. If other players can join with the same value, the issue is likely on that client’s input or connection path rather than in the server’s password entry.

- Limit file access. Anyone who can edit the server configuration can replace or remove the password, so restrict operating-system or panel permissions to trusted administrators.
- Protect backups. A backup made before editing can contain the old password. Store it where ordinary players cannot read it, and remove obsolete copies when they are no longer needed.
- Share the value privately. Do not post the password in a public server listing, open chat, or an unprotected configuration repository.
- Rotate after disclosure. If the password appears in a public message or reaches someone who should not have access, change the value and restart the server.
- Keep syntax intact. Password protection is useful only if the server can load the configuration. Preserve valid JSON and retain the original file extension.
The password setting controls who can complete the server connection. It does not replace other administrative controls or make a leaked password harmless. Treat it as one access boundary and manage the file and its backups accordingly.
What is and is not established about Hytale server passwords
Guides dated January and February 2026 document the config.json method. No newer replacement method was identified in the available material, and no documented in-game or console command was found that sets the password without editing configuration. That absence should not be interpreted as proof that no such command can ever exist; it means the cited guides do not describe one.
The available documentation also does not specify a password-length minimum, maximum length, allowed-character list, or special escaping rules. Do not promise players that a particular length or character set is officially required. If a value containing unusual characters causes trouble, test with a plainly typed value and keep the JSON quoting valid.
Likewise, the exact names of hosting-panel menus are not standardized. A panel may call the control Config, Settings, Server Password, Files, or something else. The stable part of the procedure is the underlying setting: a quoted value for Password in the active server configuration, followed by a restart.
