Pac-Man can animate the contribution calendar on a GitHub profile README without changing the contribution history itself. In Scott’s DEV Community post, he says he used the open-source abozanona/pacman-contribution-graph project, added a GitHub Actions workflow, and inserted an image snippet in his profile README. He reports that the workflow rebuilds the animation nightly; the project documentation describes daily updates and manual runs, so the schedule in his particular repository has not been independently confirmed.
What Pac-Man does to the contribution graph
The animation uses contribution-calendar data as the setting for an arcade-style visualization. According to the project README, it fetches contribution data, maps contribution intensity levels to a grid, applies game logic, and exports an animated SVG. The project says the intensity levels are relative to each user’s contribution pattern.
This changes how the calendar is displayed, not the underlying contribution history. Scott’s post describes Pac-Man eating the graph while ghosts chase him; the action’s own metadata says it generates arcade games from a GitHub user’s contributions grid and outputs animated SVGs.

Scott says he added a workflow file to his profile repository and put an image snippet in its README. That combination lets GitHub Actions generate the SVG and the README display it. His post describes his setup rather than a verified inspection of his repository.

- Choose an integration route. The project documents a GitHub Action as well as npm, direct script inclusion, and a command-line interface. Its README is the source for the project’s setup details: pacman-contribution-graph on GitHub.
- Configure the action if using GitHub Actions. The official action metadata names the action
generate-pacman-game-from-github-contribution-grid. It requires a GitHub username and offers an optional token input, which defaults to the GitHub token. See the action.yml metadata for the defined inputs. - Add the generated image to the profile README. Scott says he inserted an image snippet so the generated animation appears on his profile. Follow the project README’s current instructions for the image reference and workflow configuration.
When the animation updates
The sources describe two related but not identical schedules. Scott says his workflow rebuilds nightly, while the project README describes daily updating and says a run can be started manually from the Actions tab. These statements do not establish the exact schedule configured in Scott’s repository; the schedule depends on the workflow being used.

The project documents multiple arcade-style outputs, including Breakout, Galaga, Puzzle Bobble, Bomberman, and Minesweeper alongside Pac-Man. The integration choices it lists are GitHub Actions, npm, a direct script, and the CLI. The documentation presents these options but does not compare their ease of setup, performance, or maintenance, so choose based on how you want to generate and update the SVG.
