As an operator, create a world with /world add <worldName> from the Hytale server console or in-game. Use /world setdefault <worldName> if new players should begin there. World-specific settings are stored in universe/worlds/<worldName>/config.json. Because command names and configuration keys can change between Hytale server versions, verify the syntax shown by your server’s help command before changing a production server.
Before you create the world
You need operator privileges (or equivalent console access), a running Hytale dedicated server, and the exact name you want to use. Choose a simple name with no spaces, such as adventure2 or creative_flat; the same spelling is used in commands, folder names, and configuration. Back up the server before creating or importing a world, especially if players already have builds or inventories.

- Server console: many panels expect the command without a leading slash, for example
world add adventure2. - In-game chat: use the slash form, for example
/world add adventure2, while logged in as an operator.
Guides for different server builds also show alternate forms such as world create or /addworld. If the command below is rejected, do not keep guessing. Run help in the console (or the in-game help command) and use the world subcommands listed by that specific build.
Create a new procedural world
Standard creation
- Open the server console or join the server with an operator account.
- Run
/world add <worldName>in-game, orworld add <worldName>in a console that automatically strips slash prefixes. Replace<worldName>with your chosen name. Example:/world add adventure2. - Wait for the command to report that the world was created and activated. Generation can take time and may produce disk and CPU activity while chunks are prepared.
- Use the world-travel or teleport command provided by your server to enter the new world and confirm that it loads.
The add command is the commonly documented form for current Hytale server guides, but command syntax is version-sensitive. A successful command should create a directory under universe/worlds using the exact name you supplied.

Select a generator at creation time
Some server builds accept an optional generator argument:

Example: /world add creative_flat --gen=flat. If your server says the --gen option or a generator name is unknown, create the world without the option and follow the generator names shown by help world. Do not assume that a guide written for another release uses the same flags.
Make the new world the default spawn world
Creating a world does not necessarily change where first-time players appear. To make it the default for new players, run:

/world setdefault <worldName>For example, /world setdefault adventure2. Console panels that do not use slash prefixes generally expect world setdefault adventure2.
The default applies to players joining for the first time. Players who joined previously generally continue spawning in the world they last visited, so changing the default is not a global teleport or a reset of existing player locations. Test with a new account or a controlled test player before announcing the change.
Verify the default after a restart
- Set the default world.
- Disconnect and reconnect with a test account that has no previous world location.
- Confirm the account appears in the intended world.
- If the setting disappears after a restart, inspect the root configuration and your hosting panel, as described below.
Configure an individual world’s settings
Each world’s settings file is located at:
universe/worlds/<worldName>/config.jsonFor a world named adventure2, the file is universe/worlds/adventure2/config.json. A minimal configuration requires at least a DisplayName property according to the available Hytale configuration documentation. The file can also define world behavior such as fall damage, player-versus-player combat, time progression, environment, and ticking or simulation.
Safe editing procedure
- Stop the server cleanly. Do not edit a world file while the server is actively writing saves.
- Copy the existing
config.jsonto a backup location and keep the original filename available for rollback. - Edit only the keys supported by your server version. Preserve valid JSON syntax: use double quotes around keys and text values, commas between properties, and no trailing comma after the final property.
- Save the file in the same world directory. Check that your editor did not append an extra extension such as
.json.txt. - Start the server and watch the console for JSON parse errors or unknown-property warnings.
- Join the world and test each behavior you changed. If startup fails, stop the server, restore the backup, and start again.
The exact names and allowed values for individual settings are version-dependent. Do not copy a complete configuration from a different release unless you have checked every key against the documentation or the output of your running server.

Set the server-wide default in the root config
The server’s root config.json contains a Defaults block with a World key naming the default world. Conceptually, it looks like this:

}Use the actual formatting and additional properties already present in your file; the example shows only the relevant structure. If the named world folder does not exist under universe, the server can create that world during launch. That behavior can produce an unintended fresh world if the name is misspelled, so confirm the folder and value character-for-character.

Panel-hosted servers
On a control-panel host, panel settings can override values in the root config.json each time the server starts. If your manual edit keeps reverting or has no effect, open the panel’s Settings or Startup configuration, change the default-world field there, save it, and restart. Do not repeatedly edit the file while the panel is rewriting it.
Load an existing or uploaded world

- Stop the Hytale server.
- Upload or copy the complete world folder into
universe/worlds. - Check that the folder name is exactly the world name you intend to load, including capitalization where your operating system or server treats names as case-sensitive.
- Start the server. The folder should load during startup, or you can use
/world load <worldName>after startup if that subcommand is available. - Inspect the console for load errors, then enter the world and verify terrain, player access, and settings.
A name mismatch is a common failure: instead of opening the uploaded data, the server may create a new empty world using the name in your command or default setting. Compare the command, the root Defaults.World value, and the actual folder name before deleting anything.
What to copy
Copy the entire world directory rather than only selected region files. The directory should retain its own metadata, configuration, and generated data. If the provider gave you an archive, extract it so that universe/worlds/<worldName> is the resulting path; avoid an extra nesting level such as universe/worlds/archive-name/<worldName> unless the server documentation explicitly expects it.

Use the console’s help output to confirm whether your server requires a slash, which subcommands exist, and whether an operation asks for an additional confirmation.
Troubleshoot a failed world creation
“Unknown command” or “unknown subcommand”
Run help, then inspect the commands beginning with world. Some guides use world create <name> [type], while other builds use /world add <name>; a separate command set lists /addworld and /removeworld. These are not interchangeable promises across versions. Use the form your server advertises.

Permission denied
Confirm that the account is an operator and that the panel console is connected to the correct server instance. A command typed in a client chat window without operator privileges will fail even when the same command succeeds from the server console.
The command works but the world is empty
For an import, compare the spelling of the command and folder. A mismatch can cause Hytale to create a new empty world. Stop the server, rename the folder or correct the command, and restart; do not overwrite the uploaded data with the newly created directory until you have a backup.
The server will not start after editing JSON
Restore the backup immediately, then validate the JSON for missing commas, unmatched braces, incorrect quotation marks, or unsupported keys. Reapply one change at a time while the server is stopped. A file saved with the wrong encoding or extension can also be ignored or rejected.
The default world keeps reverting
Check both locations: the root config.json Defaults.World value and the hosting panel’s Settings or Startup fields. Panel values may be written back at startup and override manual file edits. Confirm that the target folder exists under universe/worlds.
Players spawn somewhere unexpected
Remember that setdefault targets new players. Existing players can retain the world they last visited. Test with a genuinely new player record, and move established players explicitly using the server’s supported travel or teleport command if you want a migration.
A reliable creation checklist
- Back up the server and any existing world folders.
- Choose a unique, consistently spelled world name.
- Confirm operator or console access.
- Run the world command shown by your server’s help system; start with
/world add <name>for in-game use. - Wait for creation to finish and verify the folder under
universe/worlds. - Apply
setdefaultonly if new players should start there. - Stop the server before editing a world’s
config.json. - Restart after configuration edits and read the entire startup log.
- For imported worlds, verify folder depth and exact spelling before loading.
- Keep backups until players have entered the new world and all expected behavior has been tested.
Which approach should you use?

The safest operational sequence is to create or upload the world, verify it privately, configure its per-world settings while the server is stopped, and only then make it the default for new players. Keep the old default world intact until the new one has passed that test.
