Microsoft Teams supports three practical ways to share a link: paste the URL as-is, create a hyperlink with custom text, or copy a link to an existing Teams message, channel, or file. The desktop app and Teams on the web provide the full formatting controls; on mobile, Microsoft documents pasting the URL into the message box and sending it.
The steps below use Microsoft’s current menu names, including Format, Insert link, More options, and Copy link.
Add a clickable hyperlink with custom text
Use this method when you want text such as Open the project plan to point to a web address instead of displaying the entire URL.

- Open the Teams chat or channel where you want to post the link.
- In the compose area, select Format. In a channel, you may first need to open the Posts tab and select Start a new post. Some channels use a threaded layout where you can type directly in the message area.
- Select Insert link.
- Enter the words you want people to click in the Display text field.
- Enter or paste the destination URL in the Address field.
- Select Insert.
- Add any other message text, then select Send.
For example, the display text could be Review the Q4 budget, while the address could be a SharePoint, OneDrive, or external website URL. Microsoft documents this desktop procedure in its Teams guide to sending a file, picture, or link.

Paste a URL directly into a Teams message
For a quick share, copy the complete address from your browser and paste it into the Teams compose box. Teams can automatically turn the pasted URL into a clickable link. Select Send when you are ready.
- Open the webpage or resource you want to share.
- Copy its URL from the browser address bar, usually with
Ctrl+Con Windows orCommand+Con Mac. - Return to the Teams chat or channel.
- Paste the URL into the message box.
- Select Send.
This is usually the fastest option, but the posted address may be shortened or displayed with a preview. If you need a readable label rather than a visible URL, use Format > Insert link.
Turn existing message text into a hyperlink
You can also write the message first and then attach a URL to selected text.

- Select the words that should become clickable.
- Paste the copied URL with
Ctrl+Von Windows. - Send the message.
If selecting text and pasting does not produce the result you expect, use the more explicit Format > Insert link method. It gives you separate fields for the display text and address.
Paste the full URL without Teams formatting it
Teams may truncate a long URL or apply its normal link formatting. To paste the complete address without that formatting, use the plain-text paste shortcut:

This can be useful when a URL contains tracking parameters, a long query string, or a fragment that must remain visible. It does not change whether the destination requires permission or sign-in.
Add a link in a Teams channel
Channel layouts vary slightly. If the channel has a Posts layout, open the channel, select the Posts tab, and choose Start a new post at the top or Start a post at the bottom. Then use the compose controls to paste a URL or create a formatted hyperlink.
Some channels show Conversation instead of Posts, or use a threaded layout. In that case, type into the message area and select Send.
If Start a new post is unavailable, the channel may restrict new conversations to moderators. You can still reply to an existing thread if your permissions allow it. Microsoft’s instructions for these layouts are in its guide to sending or replying to a channel message.
Copy a link to a specific Teams message
This is different from adding a website link. A message link takes the recipient directly to a particular post or chat message, where Teams highlights it.

- Find the message you want to share.
- Hover over it.
- Select More options (the three-dot menu).
- Select Copy link.
- Paste the copied link into another Teams chat, channel, email, or application.
There are two important access limitations:
- A recipient must be a member of the original group chat to open a link to a message in that chat.
- If the original message has been deleted, the link shows a notification bar rather than the deleted message.
Microsoft explains these behaviors in its documentation for sharing a link to a specific Teams message.
Copy a link to a Teams channel
To share the channel itself rather than one message:
- Find the channel in the Teams list.
- Hover over the channel name.
- Select More options.
- Select Copy link.
- Paste the channel link into a chat or channel conversation.
A channel link does not automatically grant access. The recipient still needs the appropriate team and channel permissions. Microsoft’s current support documentation also states that guests cannot join a team by using a link.
Copy a link to a file in Teams
Files shared in Teams are normally stored in SharePoint or OneDrive, so access to the file is controlled by those services. To copy the file’s link:
- Open the chat or channel containing the file.
- Open the Files or Shared tab.
- Find the file and select More options.
- Select Copy link.
- Paste the link into a Teams message or share it elsewhere.
A missing preview does not necessarily mean that the link is broken. Teams may not show a preview when the recipient lacks permission, sensitivity-label encryption applies, the conversation includes an external user, or the file type cannot be previewed. Microsoft specifically notes that some formats, including .zip files, do not support previews.

Before sending a file link outside your organization, check its sharing permissions. A recipient may be able to open the Teams message but still receive an access-denied error for the file.
Add a link from the Teams mobile app
On mobile, Microsoft’s current procedure is to enter or paste the link directly into the message box and send it. The documented mobile steps do not include a separate Insert link dialog for adding custom display text.
- Open the chat or channel in the Teams mobile app.
- Tap the message box.
- Type or paste the URL.
- Send the message.
For a hyperlink with custom display text, use Teams on the desktop or web where the full formatting interface is available.
Why a Teams link may not work

Teams link safety
Teams uses Microsoft’s ATP Safe Links security to check links sent and received and may warn about potentially unsafe destinations. Treat an unexpected warning seriously, especially when the message asks for credentials, payment information, or an unfamiliar file download.
When you open a webpage link while signed in to Microsoft Edge, the page may open in Edge with the Teams chat displayed alongside it. This behavior is separate from the link’s permissions: a page can open successfully while a protected file or Teams message still requires additional access.

FAQ
Can I add a hyperlink without showing the full URL in Teams?
Yes. Open the full compose controls with Format, select Insert link, enter the display text and address, select Insert, and then send the message.
Does Teams support Markdown or an HTML command for hyperlinks?
Microsoft’s current documented procedure does not require Markdown, HTML, a slash command, or a keyboard command. Use Format > Insert link on desktop or paste the URL directly.
Can I share a Teams message with someone outside the original chat?
Only if that person has access to the original conversation. Microsoft states that a recipient must be a member of the original group chat to open a link to a message there.
Why does my file link show no preview?
A preview can be unavailable because of permissions, sensitivity-label encryption, an external-user conversation, or an unsupported file type. A missing preview does not automatically mean the file link is invalid.
Can I create a formatted hyperlink in Teams on my phone?
Microsoft’s current mobile instructions document entering or pasting the URL and sending it, but do not document a separate Insert link dialog. Use the desktop or web app for custom display text.
